We had a very difficult time with lack of communication regarding special order windows from Jeld Wen. They came later than expected and were not as ordered; one was defective. Ganahl did what they could to get things rectified but we will never recommend Jeld-Wen. read more

Have you ever driven by a building that you can't help but make a second glance? Ganahl Lumber in Anaheim, California is just that. With its eye-catching exterior, this large hardware store is reminiscent of the old west...& for some reason reminded me of a giant log-ride themed attraction at an old west themed amusement park. Pretty cool! Established in 1884, Ganahl Lumber began selling cement & lumber in the L.A. area. They eventually expanded to various locations (including the Anaheim location opening in 1904), & now offer lumber, paint, cement, doors & windows, hardware, moulding, novelty nostalgic candies & snacks, & much more. I'd been curious about the Anaheim location for years, so when the need arose & I was in the area, I had to check them out. Upon entry, there are interesting historic facts about Ganahl & cool artifacts on display. The store is huge, & they have a large selection of stock that you may not find at some of the larger chain big-box store. It's a gigantic version of an old-fashioned neighborhood hardware store! With the exception of the helpful reps in the paint department (where they carry Benjamin Moore), the only downside I experienced with this location has been the disappointing level of customer service. After being practically ignored during in-person visit & also encountering condescending/rude reps on the telephone, unfortunately, I do not plan to return to this location. As much as I like the store itself, the level of customer service I've experienced has been so bad that unfortunately I do not plan to return. With that said, however, everyone's experiences may vary (some good...some bad). The return policy is horrible. I did some construction and bought one eight foot piece of a baseboard. I bought the wrong size I bought 5 1/4 inch but needed 4 1/2 went back. The next day bought the right size and returned the wrong size. I offered to go put it back myself since I knew exactly where it went and they said no we'll take care of it. When I made the original purchase, I asked I could return if it was the wrong size and they said no problem. They neglected to tell me that they charge you 15% and all return items for restocking. I could see a charge of 15% if you abuse the policy or something difficult but I just hate when companies do crap like that for a pure money grab but lesson learned all shop elsewhere. Lastly, you guys need to review your overall return policy cause I went to three different desks and stood in three different lines to make the return get credited and they get checked out walking out of the store. You make it way more difficult than it needs to be. read more

The windows department isn't great here, would't recommend. I worked with Marci. She seemed to know what she was doing but was also short and not overly friendly. I wanted three windows placed side by side and she wouldn't even show me the option, she just kept showing me two side by side. I told her numerous times I wanted three and she said "It will be too busy". I appreciate her professional opinion, but why not even show me what it would look like? And if that's what I want... why not just do it!? She doesn't have to stare at it all the time, I do! We orderes three bathroom windows and she didn't ask me if we wanted them frosted, but luckily, I realized it quickly and reached out to her about doing it. Seems like she should recommend they be frosted for a bathroom, the customer shouldn't have to bring that to her attention! After I went forward with the purchase, her communication wasn't great. I had to email her to get the ETA of the windows (Since she never sen it), and then the windows took SIX WEEKS! I was given a window of 2-3 weeks. On the initial date they were supposed to arrive, I had to call them to check the status and they told me it would be another 2-3 weeks. Basically, it felt like she was over me as a customer since she had already gotten my money ($8000). I called the manager, David to discuss the ETA with him and he wasn't very friendly either. He kind of gave off a "I'm better than you" additude when talking to me. He probably said "All the correct things" but he didn't genuinely seem to care that my windows were going to take double the amount of time they initially quoted me. The windows were finally in stock and I had opted to pick them up so I didn't have to pay delivery (Which Marci suggested I do because of my high tax bracket anyway). My husband and his friend had planned to go get them but then I got an email from Marci saying "We can deliver your windows Friday or Monday". I thought "Wow, maybe they're doing me a favor because of how long it took to get the windows here!" and canceled my husbands pickup. Today I checked my bank and what do you know!?? They charged me an extra $325.59! Shipping and the additional tax charge! Marci gave me no warning that I would be charged! I spoke with the manager again regarding the charge, and he was the same. Said he has to look into it and will get back to me at some point. I told him that both he and Marci weren't very friendly and he did apologize, but still had an arrogance in his voice. I've spent over $20K at Ganahl in the last couple of months and I would hope for better service. I will definitely NEVER buy windows from the Anaheim location again! read more

This store is careless, incompetent and/or fraudulent. A more than $2,000 charge to my credit card on file with only two authorized user. When I called to investigate I was transferred around and have yet to receive a explanation after 4 days, LET ALONE A REFUND! When I first called the store I was informed that the purchase was made to an individual that is not one of the authorized users. Ganahl's employee told me that they would look into it but no accountability, FOR THEIR MISTAKE. This is the second time this happens with this company and if you have an account with this store or company, I would look at your transactions. I came here with my son who was purchasing supplies to build his Boy Scout Eagle project. The staff here was so nice and helpful to a clueless mom and her son. Got our wood planks cut (first 5 cuts free and 50 cents each additional cut up to 15), as well as varnish, nuts and bolts, and other supplies. It's mostly a lumber yard (SO MUCH WOOD! Better selection than Home Depot & Lowes) but there's a shop in front selling other basic home improvement stuff like Home Depot without the chaos. The Anaheim location is the headquarters for this company and they have pictures around showing the history of Ganahls in Southern CA. Kind of like a museum visit and shopping excursion in one. :) read more

When the item you're looking for can be readily be found at Ganahl Lumber, seems like you have to put up with their nonsense. I have a craftsmen house and I'm redoing the red cedar shingles again, only they have in stock. I've purchased several bundles for this project and I've made several trips as needed. Well, on 06/30/2023 I went to buy five bundles. They only had three on the sales floor. Of the three, two were not in a tightly package as if some shingles came out/taken. As I was loading the three bundles, an employee asks if I needed help which was perfect timing because I intended to buy five. I asked him if I can get two more bundles. He returns with a pallet stacked several feet high of new cedar inventory. I then told him I'd take five and put the three back on the sales floor. This turd then proceeds to tell me that I have to take those three because they're in the cart. I responded that I'll just put them back and take five. He goes to tell me that because I got them the bundle is loose. I explained that of the 3 bundles were loosely packaged when I got them. I go on the explain that ultimately I'm not stealing for him, his employer or was I asking for a handout. Still not phased and realizing I'm not dealing with a rational person, walk away. Determined to get what I came for as my project was resuming Saturday, I asked to speak with a manager. After explaining what just transpired, he apologized and had a different employee, who was standing by listening, get me the five bundles. The saga isn't over. I waited 10/15 minutes in the cashier area and nothing. I politely asked a customer service employee if he could check the status. He radios the employee who was supposed to bring me the bundles and tells him that he's on it. 10 minutes pass. I then ask the same customer service employee If he could check the status of the bundles. Apparently this employee thought I parked in the back and would load it. Again, standing with the manager, I clearly said I'll be here as in standing by the cashier area. Another 10 minutes pass and now I just have had it. I told the customer service employee I'm leaving in a neutral tone. But I'm furious at this point inside. Maybe this review is for me vent or for Ganahl to learn and improve. I'm not sure the latter would happen. read more

Massive disappointment. After moving here living in a number of places across the country, this is the least service-oriented lumber yard I've used. Whether it's in-store or at the window/door desk, the staff - at best - could be considered indifferent. Such a shame, but I guess unless you're a massive contractor, you don't get the attention or the focus. I will actually be buying my new front door somewhere else after having endured slow quotes, rude delivery and failure to meet specific time windows. Just took delivery of a custom door scheduled for 9-12 at 8 (I work from home, so yeah, a big issue scheduling wise) and they wouldn't bring it over the threshold inside to be adjacent to my install (for $175...tip goes back in the pocket). Ordering at the windows desk, they try to just wing an option or two out based on their personal knowledge and get you a take it or leave it quote, hiding behind product catalogues and their own personal file system as opposed to allowing you to browse. Just a bad, old fashioned shopping experience I don't care to repeat. But I'm sure they don't care about that. read more

If they're not being nasty, they're dismissive. Also, they're apparently not "legally required" to list prices on all their lumber, forcing you to find an employee to get a price. No, they do not provide anything to a customer to find this information themselves. This led to a REALLY sketchy incident where an employee wrote the wrong item number on 3 different items, causing what should have been an $80 purchase to skyrocket to $500! Once I can see happening, but three times? No, that's pretty far from okay. Not to mention the item numbers weren't even close to each other, making this fully intentional. List your prices, and stop the price gouging from your little "whoopsies." read more

We recently purchased new interior and exterior door hardware for our home. We are totally pleased with the ordering, pricing and delivery of our order. Paul Finch at the Ball Road store was tremendously helpful in working through all the details for the 20 + doors (exterior with French Double/ active and dummy sides, and single doors, all with dead bolt locks, interior including single pass and privacy types). Paul's careful attention resulted in perfect delivery of the hardware with no errors/returns required. This experience was great in all areas including the order prep, very good pricing compared to other vendors, and a timely delivery to meet our schedule. I've had bad experiences at other local yards and even different ganahl locations, BUT i am blown away with the service I get in hardwoods. I here about once a week for supplies for my small business and Kurtis and Manny are the guys that usually help me out. They are not only kind, but extremely professional and always quick to help me out. i'm a full time nursing student and a mom so I never have much time, but i'm always in and out as quickly as possible. Just had an awful experience here that has brought my review from 3 stars down to a deserving 1 star. I call and speak with a gentleman and ask if they sell PVP pipe, he says no but they have ABS pipe. I let him know I am looking for 4" and he transfers me to Jennifer. I explain to Jennifer that I need 4" ABS pipe and they have it but its in 10' length. I actually only need about 3' of it. I ask if they are able to cut down the pipe and she puts me on hold and comes back and tells me that yes they can do it by the linear foot but the cost is $3.59 a foot. I say no problem and head over. I get there and go over and grab a piece and ask a customer service rep where can I get it cut. He has blue eyes and is probably in his 40's and is bald. If you see him avoid him, he is not a people person. I tell him I want to get this cut and he tells me they don't do this. I say I talked to Jennifer and explain what I was told He has me go over to the counter and another guy (nicer) tells me the same thing. They don't sell by the foot. I go back over to where I got the pipe and put it back. I then snapped a pic of the price tag that clearly states $3.59 x LF and another price that says 10' for $22.99. Take a look at my picture! So I bring this pic back to the guy that is not very customer friendly. I show him that they have a price for the linear foot at $3.59 which if you bought 10" of pipe it would be $35.90. And they have another price that allows you to get a discount if you buy the whole thing. He looked at me and said "as soon as you leave I am ripping that price tag off" WTF??? Really. Either way, I won't be returning here unless I really have to. What a bad experience with a case a very rude employee on top of it. CHEERS!!! read more

My husband called this morning for a door. We had the door at Home Depot online average price, problem was that they could not get the door until July 12 (6weeks) so we called Ganahl because Jen Weld recommends their stores. My husband spoke spoke to a gentleman named Greg. First he asked if we had the product number. We explained that Ganahls website provides no number, it just sends you to the Jen Weld website. He took our info nation on the door and said he would call us back. Now please remember Home Depot has this door on their website it is not a 'custom' size no additions. Just a standard door that Jen Weld makes. All we needed to know was if the door could be shipped sooner. So we waited an hour and a half. Plenty of time to look this info up as far as I see it. (If I was standing in their store, I'm sure I would not be told they had to work on it and make me wait a hour and a half) Next- I call the store back and speak to a woman. She puts me on hold a then tells me he is still working on a quote. That he also has other things he is working on. That he will get back to me today. I questioned the woman sighting that this door is nothing special. Just a door on Jen Weld's website and standard size. She again reply's that he is working on our quote along with other things. That he just can't give me a price. I respond about if I were standing in the store. She then says she is transferring me to this Greg to speak to him. I am immediately sent to Gregs voicemail. I then call Jen Weld directly thinking their company may not want to be directing people to Ganahl as their 'Preferred seller'. The person on the phone says she will send the info to the sales rep and the department that 'deals' with this. Very poor response. VERY DISAPPOINTED. So end of story is, we returned to Home Depot, we did buy the Jen Weld door, although I really had to think about it based on their phone reps. response. I guess we wait 6 wks. I was in need of a good sized portion of wood cut to different size for a project for kids to learn on. Ganahl came through for me and saved me a ton of time. I was greeted three times in my first 100 feet into the store. The last person was Daniella who was at the order desk. I showed her the list of what I needed and that I needed it x3. She jumped on it and had a quote for me in minutes. Very friendly, super helpful, and efficient. She walked me over to the service desk where another employee gave me directions on where to go in the yard. I get out there in my truck and meet Daniel on his forklift and he picked out the best selections of the boards I needed. He then worked with me to determine which cuts to make from each of the varying lengths of wood. Again I encountered friendly, patient, and efficient. My wood was cut and I was on my way. I was so impressed with GL today from the time I walked into the business. I was told that they have excellent crown molding and I was not disappointed. The best part of my visit was that I was greeted by at least three people before I met with the main guy I needed for my crown molding and he gave me many different options. I am glad that I visited Ganahl Lumber and enjoy every day I walk into my kitchen to see how well the crown molding has changed a section of my kitchen that I didn't know what to do with. Hello. I called before hand to see if they could cut a piece of wood for me and they guy over the phone stated yea sure buddy come on on in and will cut it for you. I sated okay you'll see me tomorrow, witch is today. I get there today and an older white gentleman told me it's to small and they won't be able to. I stated on the phone they said they could cut it. He stated no it s to small. If that the case why didn't the guy on the phone tell me, what size what is it? He didn't ask. He just simply said yea man come on in.
