Ganahl Lumber. - Anaheim, CA. 2024
    Birdie M.

Have you ever driven by a building that you can't help but make a second glance? Ganahl Lumber in Anaheim, California is just that. With its eye-catching exterior, this large hardware store is reminiscent of the old west...& for some reason reminded me of a giant log-ride themed attraction at an old west themed amusement park. Pretty cool! Established in 1884, Ganahl Lumber began selling cement & lumber in the L.A. area. They eventually expanded to various locations (including the Anaheim location opening in 1904), & now offer lumber, paint, cement, doors & windows, hardware, moulding, novelty nostalgic candies & snacks, & much more. I'd been curious about the Anaheim location for years, so when the need arose & I was in the area, I had to check them out. Upon entry, there are interesting historic facts about Ganahl & cool artifacts on display. The store is huge, & they have a large selection of stock that you may not find at some of the larger chain big-box store. It's a gigantic version of an old-fashioned neighborhood hardware store! With the exception of the helpful reps in the paint department (where they carry Benjamin Moore), the only downside I experienced with this location has been the disappointing level of customer service. After being practically ignored during in-person visit & also encountering condescending/rude reps on the telephone, unfortunately, I do not plan to return to this location. As much as I like the store itself, the level of customer service I've experienced has been so bad that unfortunately I do not plan to return. With that said, however, everyone's experiences may vary (some good...some bad). One thing for sure: If you're a history buff looking for a hard-to-find item, Ganahl Lumber in Anaheim just may be worth a visit.

Wood prices are comparable to Home Depot & Lowes.

I came here with my son who was purchasing supplies to build his Boy Scout Eagle project. The staff here was so nice and helpful to a clueless mom and her son. Got our wood planks cut (first 5 cuts free and 50 cents each additional cut up to 15), as well as varnish, nuts and bolts, and other supplies. It's mostly a lumber yard (SO MUCH WOOD! Better selection than Home Depot & Lowes) but there's a shop in front selling other basic home improvement stuff like Home Depot without the chaos. The Anaheim location is the headquarters for this company and they have pictures around showing the history of Ganahls in Southern CA. Kind of like a museum visit and shopping excursion in one. :)

When the item you're looking for can be readily be found at Ganahl Lumber, seems like you have to put up with their nonsense. I have a craftsmen house and I'm redoing the red cedar shingles again, only they have in stock. I've purchased several bundles for this project and I've made several trips as needed. Well, on 06/30/2023 I went to buy five bundles. They only had three on the sales floor. Of the three, two were not in a tightly package as if some shingles came out/taken. As I was loading the three bundles, an employee asks if I needed help which was perfect timing because I intended to buy five. I asked him if I can get two more bundles. He returns with a pallet stacked several feet high of new cedar inventory. I then told him I'd take five and put the three back on the sales floor. This turd then proceeds to tell me that I have to take those three because they're in the cart. I responded that I'll just put them back and take five. He goes to tell me that because I got them the bundle is loose. I explained that of the 3 bundles were loosely packaged when I got them. I go on the explain that ultimately I'm not stealing for him, his employer or was I asking for a handout. Still not phased and realizing I'm not dealing with a rational person, walk away. Determined to get what I came for as my project was resuming Saturday, I asked to speak with a manager. After explaining what just transpired, he apologized and had a different employee, who was standing by listening, get me the five bundles. The saga isn't over. I waited 10/15 minutes in the cashier area and nothing. I politely asked a customer service employee if he could check the status. He radios the employee who was supposed to bring me the bundles and tells him that he's on it. 10 minutes pass. I then ask the same customer service employee If he could check the status of the bundles. Apparently this employee thought I parked in the back and would load it. Again, standing with the manager, I clearly said I'll be here as in standing by the cashier area. Another 10 minutes pass and now I just have had it. I told the customer service employee I'm leaving in a neutral tone. But I'm furious at this point inside. Maybe this review is for me vent or for Ganahl to learn and improve. I'm not sure the latter would happen.

Don't let them cut your Lumber, and don'tuse them for milling. They can't cut straight, nor do they seem capable of basic measurements.

Are you open to the public?

    Yes. Always

Is there a fee for cutting lumber bought here?

    More than 5 cuts there's a fee

I've recently been to a bunch of lumber yards that don't bother to tell you what kind of lumber you're looking at let alone how much it is. Is the lumber labeled and priced at Ganahl Lumber?

Yes, bin labels show wood type and board-foot price. Btw, Ganahl often has the most beautiful Black Walnut you've ever seen. Cheers!

    Colors of concrete stain?

They are a big supplier of Life Deck. Simply go to lifedeck.com and search for stain charts. You can also see the different products offered for decorative concrete projects.

We will not be using this location anymore…read more We've been loyal customers for years, so today's experience was extremely disappointing. I stopped in to have a key cut for my SUV using key blanks I had already purchased online, only to be told they wouldn't cut them because they weren't purchased from their store. At no point over the years was I ever told this was their policy. After years of supporting this business, they refused to perform a simple key-cutting service. Customer loyalty should count for something. Very disappointing experience. We'll be taking our business elsewhere.

placed an order online and it was very easy to pick up at the store…read more The reason for the two stars is the staff that follow you around in the store, literally looking at you like you're going to steal something. I understand they obviously have theft issues, because there's a person full-time at the door. But then there's thug looking people, especially the woman with the long black hair, that follow you around the store, less than 6 feet in your personal space. I thought she was gonna come over me to get to my husband who she thought was going to steal a jar of jam. We were still in the store, trying to browse, which was impossible to do with a multiple people standing in our way literally as we tried to walk down aisles . Is the jam that good????? should we have bought a case? We finally just had to leave and PAY FOR THE JAM and get our online order. There is no other way to see it other than it was intentionally intimidating. What the actual heck???!!! this is how you treat customers? That you want to come back? shame on you all.

Great In-Store Service, Terrible Customer Support Hotline…read more I ordered two medicine cabinets from Lowe's because they were in stock (even though they were slightly more expensive than Home Depot). Shipping was supposed to take 5 days, but when the delivery came, I only received one cabinet--the second box was a random piece of luggage I didn't order. Calling customer service made things worse. Abigale was unhelpful, gave contradictory answers about a discount, and hung up on us after we asked to speak with a manager. When I called back, Tina (a manager) still couldn't resolve the issue. Also, be aware: debit card refunds can take 3-10 days, and they won't guarantee any discounts over the phone. On the positive side, the in-store experience completely turned things around. At my local Anaheim Lowe's, Kayah in returns was great and made me feel valued. She brought in the store manager, Edward, who handled everything professionally and gave me a discount for the inconvenience. Bottom line: Store employees like Kayah and Edward are excellent. The customer service hotline is extremely frustrating--skip the phone and go straight to the store.

RUDE STAFF!!! SALVIA IS HER NAME!…read more This is the reason why Lowe's has poor reviews because their fucking staff is so fucking rude. I was standing in the self checkout line when there was one self checkout line with their lights turned on, which means it's working. I asked the staff is that checkout stand working she said yes, but it's not available so we waited a few minutes more. No one was there and I said how come it's not available she said someone is going to come back because they forgot an item. So if that customer is not ready to check out, cancel their whole transaction so that another customer who is ready could use the self checkout stand. That is so fucking selfish of them. Time is money and my time is very valuable too. This is so uncalled for an unnecessary. If the customer is not ready, cancel their transaction when they are ready to pay then start. The girl who was helping her name is SALVIA. Bad, poor customer service. I think she shouldn't be working at Lowe's if she does not like to deal with customers go find another job. You don't have to make a customer look stupid by saying oh just stay in line which I already was. You don't have to state the obvious. Stupid girl.

Literally the worst customer service experience I've had…read more I went in to return a few items. I didn't have my card with me, but I did have my receipt. I requested cash back for the return, and the cashier told me they couldn't do it because they didn't have cash in the register and would have to get it from the back. I asked if they could get it, and instead I was told to go to a different store. I asked to speak with a manager, and as the manager was coming over, the cashier suddenly started processing my cash refund. I didn't come in upset, but that situation was frustrating because they lied, instead of simply trying to help. When I spoke with the manager, Jason, he was being dismissive instead of trying to understand the situation. He kept repeating, "Well, you have your money, right?" rather than addressing the service. I asked for a business card or contact information for someone above the store level, and I was told they didn't have anything available. One that's unprofessional. Two I don't know if that was true. My issue wasn't the return itself. I got my money back. My issue was the lack of professionalism and the way the situation was handled. Good customer service means communicating honestly and treating customers with respect. I understand retail can be stressful, but being rude or dismissive only makes a simple situation worse. They were being rude and egging me on of course I'm gonna be upset.
