Stopped in during the art festival. They were very busy but the line for a table moved quickly. Service was attentive and friendly. We split the bbq pork sandwich and they let us get 2 sides (side sales and the pasta salad). Sandwich was very good (could have used a bit more sauce). The pasta salad was great! Garden side salad had super fresh local tomatoes on it that were . We also got the tuna salad plate with potato sales. Again more of those super fresh maters....tuna salad was good, prefer a bit more mayo and the tater salad was pretty good. Overall, this place was great. Absolutely delicious food as always from the Garden Deli. I usually get the pastrami sandwich (which is fantastic) but I opted for the special which was a smoked cheddar brisket sandwich. The food was delicious, juicy brisket, a deliciously BBQ sauce and a nice crispy bun. The servers were gratuitous and attentive, and the service was smooth. Our food came out in less than 15 minutes and was perfect for the cold weather in Burnsville. The music choices were on point and the experience was 10/10. Visited this nice welcoming establishment near the local shops for lunch. I was greeted right away with inside and outside dining options. They had a variety of soup, sandwiches and salads. I stopped in on a Saturday just before noon; it was my first time trying Garden Deli. What I was craving was a fresh, filling salad, and of all the places in Burnsville; I assumed Garden Deli, based on their name, probably has that nailed down. Sadly, I was pretty mistaken. I ordered a Chef Salad - which should have ham and turkey - mine only had turkey. Nothing was wilted, but the salad also wasn't crisp. It was the same experience as getting a salad at Panera - it passes, but it was likely prepared hours ago or yesterday. I also had a side of fries; and they were delicious. Perfectly seasoned and hot. It was the redemption of my meal. Service was good, but I did have the "you're not a regular" vibe. But I didn't wait long for my food or refills on my drink. I am not turned off in trying an entree or something more substantial in the future. Pricing is very reasonable given other options in town, and I'm always looking for an excellent fish and chips option. I may also try one of their sandwiches for lunch, just to see if their deli options are a cut above the salads. Ambiance was comfortable with ample indoor and outdoor seating. Outdoor provides nice views of the town square. If you have friends or family coming into town, this is someplace nice you can eat without venturing too far away from the center of town. read more

On this beautiful crisp October morning my wife and I suddenly and unexpectedly decided to vacate our south Charlotte digs for a night at the Nu Wray Inn in the uncomplicated little mountain town of Burnsville, North Carolina. Our choice of the Garden Deli for dinner was a simple one as it was directly across the town square from our inn and there were few other non-fast food choices in the historic downtown area. The mixed Yelp reviews had us a bit uneasy but our concerns were quickly put to rest by our superb server Tonya. The very comfortable and cozy bi-level dining room had light oak walls and quickly filled with locals. Quite frankly, everything was just right from the little things like beautiful, fresh lemons on the beverages to the nicely prepared 8 oz Angus NY Strip steak specials. The steaks were seasoned well and perfectly cooked and were accompanied by a large Idaho baking potato with sour cream and real butter, mixed veggie quinoa, cold fresh house salad and warm French bread. Not a bad deal for 18 bucks. The house White Zinfindel and Chocolate Mocha Stout were also deals at $4 each. We finished things off with decent strawberry cheese cake chosen from your typical dessert list. I don't quite understand some of the Yelp review angst about this innocent little diner. Yes. I agree it is certainly misnamed as a deli but overall our meal was very good to excellent, as was the service, atmosphere and cleanliness. I wish they were open on Sundays so we could try their famous Reuben tomorrow but that will have to wait until next time. We hope to be back. read more

Well I must have gone on a bad day (March 14, evening). The place came highly recommended by a local business owner. The atmosphere was amazing and the service was friendly and professional, but the food was disappointing. The cod fish was way overcooked and the chicken tenders were the low quality frozen type you can get at Walmart. Both were edible but that's it. The wedge fries were good but the sweet tea wasn't very sweet. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt but I won't go back. read more

Great value! Big portions and great flavor. When you stop in you'll find right away that it's a local favorite. The staff was ridiculously polite and kind with their service. We had multiple servers ask if we had been helped during our visit. The tuna melt was a total delight and was reminiscent of my beloved grannies recipe and presentation. Stopped for dinner at this quaint little restaurant during a weekend trip to the mountains. Very friendly staff. I had the grouper tenders with potato wedges and a side salad. Hearty portions and very filling. Mom had the ribs and said they were fantastic, very tender. My friend had the flat iron steak and was not impressed. It is my birthday today and my husband was trying to find a new, yummy restaurant on our way home from Boone today. My chicken taco salad was not good and the chicken was so dry that I wasn't able to cut it with a knife let alone eat it. When my husband respectfully requested it taken off the bill, the manager declined and proceeded to get in a very embarrassing confrontation with my husband about it. This is a very busy place with a small dining room but very large outdoor dining space so if it is not nice weather plan on possibly waiting for a table at both dinner and lunch. I have not had anything bad here and I have had the best Ruben sandwich ever at this establishment. Their soaps are phenomenal of what I have had BUT if you don't get there pretty early you will miss out because they are often out of soups posted on their daily special menu. The mushroom and Brie was out of this world delicious. Their lunch and dinner menus are similar but I have found their lunch menu is better so try this place for lunch would be my suggestion. Example the before mentioned Rueben it's on the lunch menu but not the dinner however they do offer just a pastrami on rye for dinner. I ordered a Rueben and they wouldn't make it for dinner so alas I settle for the pastrami. Speaking of pastrami it is this that they use on the Rueben rather than corned beef. Pastrami is just a far better choice of meat so I was very excited to see the useable of pastrami over corned beef. They offer beer and wine which is very reasonably priced for a restaurant. My last visit we ordered chips and salsa and it didn't come out until our meal But it was house made very fresh salsa so I would suggest that for a snack or appetizer just be sure you inform your waitress you wish for it to be an appetizer. I find their prices very reasonable considering the amount of food you receive and for the quality! My only complaint is their house chili it's decent but needs a bit of salt and something to jazz it up a little more. I'd probably order it again if I happen to have a hankering for chili that day but I honestly don't see myself doing so because there are other tastier options. The dining room is very cozy and has always appeared clean. Parking is around the plaza in downtown Burnsville but there is ample parking to the side of the restaurant in Wells Fargo parking lot. I've never had any issues parking there. read more

The flavors remind me of the time I use to live in New York City and I couldn't be more fortunate to come across this restaurant. I have a summer home in Burnsville, so I frequent local businesses often. The Garden Deli is a must do stop for us at least once a week when we're in B'ville. Is it the greatest deli in the sense of the classic New York legends? Nope. But the food is damned good, consistently prepared, served by friendly waitstaff, and, if you arrive much after the 11 AM. opening, most likely a wait in line. What brings us back time and again? Good food, and the variety. From TexMex to deli NY deli clones, the Garden's offerings are moderately (cheap?) priced, fresh, and well prepared. Potato wedges (not on my diet anymore) are wonderfully crisp outside, and soft inside. Blackened chicken sub serves up mildly spicy (I'm a fire-eater) breast with trimmings. Good macaroni and potato salads, too. Over-sized desserts. If the weather is nice, score a table in the shaded outdoor area. Al fresco is the way to enjoy the mountains. I've tried most of the menu, and never had a disappointing prep. Whenever we have guests at the cabin, we never hesitate to offer a trip to the Garden Deli, and that's the best recommendation I can make. read more

I've lived in nearby Spruce Pine with a work office in Burnsville, so I am very familiar with most of the eateries in the surrounding areas, good and bad. The Garden Deli is to me lunch done right. When I lived in the area I dined with the Garden Deli, either in the dining room or via take out, at least twice a week. I am not a vegetarian by any means, but I prefer several of their vegetarian selections over their meatier ones much of the time. You will not find a better Veggie Burger in all of Yancey or Mitchell County. Their Greek Grilled Cheese melts in your mouth and leaves you stuffed. I have tried most of their soup and sandwiches on the menu and I have yet to be disappointed. Every single time I have eaten there I have had to wait in line, but understandably, because they are so good that they stay busy. A good way to skip the lines is to order as take out. There are plenty of places within walking distance, for instance the town square benches across the street, to enjoy a relaxing delicious lunch with out being inconvenienced. I now live in Orlando, FL and do not have the option go to the Garden Deli as much as I like, but I always make sure it is on my agenda when I visit. read more

We got lost, and we were hungry and happened to be in Burnsville and LUCKILY The Garden Deli was there. The chicken salad was fresh and tasty and came with a side of macaroni salad that reminded me of home, (no store bought there), the roast BBQ pork was just as I remembered growing up as a teen in NC years ago. The staff was friendly and the prices were very reasonable. The restaurant was clean and that's all I wanted. We've since been back a few times and have tried many other things on the menu. Time and time again I come here and grab a sandwich when I'm in the area, and the Garden Deli never lets me down. Good food, great atmosphere, and just absolutely superior service.. I grew up in this area, and don't let any of these reviews bother you whatsoever. This restaurant started out as just a lunch place, but the owner just decided to throw in dinner Thursday thru Saturday.. What's the harm in that? Anyways, the turkey bacon caesar is my favorite sandwich here and I just about get it every time I come. The Caesar dressing is homemade, and the turkey tastes like its cut fresh every morning. In the winter time, I get the roast beef Kaiser. That's also a big choice for me. A couple of weekends ago I brought my wife up here to eat with me and she really enjoyed the Reuben. Great little restaurant with some great service. I am in the area visiting with my wife and we had to stop twice at this place because it was so good. It has great southern hospitality and the food is amazing. I ordered the blackened chicken and it was so good. The flavor was perfect and it was piled high on my sandwich. The potato salad here is to die for. I could eat a whole plate full of this. My wife got the chicken salad sandwich both times because she loved it so much. There is so much chicken and some of the best chicken salad I have had. The only side we didn't try was the macaroni salad but both the potato salad and potato wedges are great. We got the apple pie for dessert and it outstanding. Overall this restaurant was awesome. The service was spot on and the food was delicious. The place felt warm and like home.
