Garden District has been my favorite coffee spot in Baton Rouge for years now. Even when I lived 30 minutes away I would go get an iced vanilla latte every morning. I didn't know what a granita was until ordering it one day...it's amazing. Their coffee is unique and I genuinely haven't gotten anything close to it any where else in Baton Rouge. Had the chance to check this place out last Thursday morning. I am not a fan of coffee and was meeting for a business meeting, but I had a medium, hazelnut latte with almond milk, and it was tasty. To an out of towner, at first glance there seems to be little to this shop... well in the somewhat stark interior there are echoes of decades of pleased customers. GDC is not the first incarnation of this space, but few will remember anything here before (spoiler: yoga studio). The space has changed names and owners a few times and the current management is the best it has seen.... old story .. employee buys out and runs the place better than predecessors. Granita Latte is a hidden gem on the menu.. think frozen mocha latte. yummmm. My friends and I have been going here since high school. I have taken first dates here, and it's where I do all of my studying. As far as snappy employees go, I have never had an issue. I'm on a first name basis with most of them and whenever there's a new one, I make a point to tip well so they know my face. I've never had any sort of a problem. As far as being "rude" about wanting you to buy a drink, it seems rude to me that someone would come use their free wifi and a table and not support this wonderful, locally owned place. It's peaceful, quiet, and the coffee is better than anywhere else. This is my neighborhood coffee spot, but I would still come here if it weren't so convenient. I occasionally come in for a drink - I love sitting on the patio with a chai latte on cool nights. But more often, I buy beans here. The coffee is solid, and the ambience reminds me of a 90s sitcom coffee shop. It's not fancy or artisanal - just good coffee. The only thing I don't love is the food. There are a lot of sweets (and Naked Juice), so if that's your thing, you'll love it. But if you're looking for something more hearty or healthy, you'll be out of luck. But overall a great place to grab a cup of coffee with friends or by yourself. read more

So I figured since I come here so much I would write a review. Pros: - The coffee is cheap yet quality. - The atmosphere is very laid back and calm. - Patrons are usually respectful and quite, so it's a good place to study (unlike Highland Coffee). - Owners/Workers are always nice and are good baristas (they always give me the right amount of almond milk) - The baked items are delicious and are, apparently, made fresh in house. I moved back to BR after being away for 15 years. I want to like this place for the nostalgia, if nothing else (I went here often when I lived in BR before). I've tried to go there twice in the past week. They were closed early both times. No explanation, just a sign in the door. I want to support a local business over a chain. This is my favorite coffee shop in Baton Rouge. Their iced coffee is amazing. Hubby and I drove across town one morning because he loves their espresso and I love their iced coffee so much. The baristas are friendly, cute, and hip. The atmosphere is eclectic. The baked goods are yummy (though no vegan stuff). I can only speak for take-out service, though. I find it odd that a coffee shop down south would be more high strung about people staying and buying stuff than a place up north (based on other reviews), but I did not experience anything negative-only friendliness. One barista even went out of her way to find out what the crazy looking succulent in their garden is called for me. I love an independent coffee shop, and this is a cozy one. To be fair, we went after nine pm, so I didn't have coffee. The blueberry bar I had was sort of tasteless, so if get something different next time. There were many pastries to choose from. The spot was clean and comfortable. I had a horrible experience here. I was not welcomed upon walking in the door because the baristas were too busy flirting with 2 guys at the counter. Then, the 1st sentence out her mouth was "there are no outside containers allowed" bc my friend was holding a clear glass bottle of apple juice. With NO labels! And wasn't even drinking it at the time! After that, she forgot my order 2 times (still flirting with the guys) and after receiving my money, never talked to me again. I don't write negative reviews because I believe every place has a bad day. This is my one exception. I want to love this place and I keep coming back hoping that it will get better, but it never does. 1. If you have a diary allergy be prepared to be charged 40 cents extra for a splash of soy even when cream is free. Note to restaurant owners, food allergies are covered under the ADA; this is asking for a lawsuit. 2. The wifi is atrocious. Yes, I realize the wifi is a perk, but I'm going to sit in your coffee shop and eat snacks, drink coffee and be loyal if I can just get a decent signal and can't get soy milk. 3. One time I waited for my husband to show up before ordering a cup of coffee so we could pay together and the barista came reminded me every minute or so that I needed to buy a coffee or leave. The last time he sent another customer to my table to threaten me saying that the barista would have me thrown out. Three strikes. Done. read more

I've been going to GDC regularly for a couple of years, and by regularly I mean anywhere from three to five days per week, spending around $50 per week. While I like the baristas and I have developed a relationship as a "regular" with a couple (one actually starts my drink when she hears my Harley pull up), and the coffee is okay, the owner is a dick. He seems preoccupied with his customer's enjoying his shop "too much." Don't get too comfortable, don't stay too long, don't you dare bring anything to eat or drink that his shop didn't sell you and if you come to meet a friend, make sure you buy something, too - or else. I've seen this and I've heard about even more, but until a couple of days ago, I was spared anything more than a snotty attitude and glares in my direction. The other day, after spending $15 on coffee, food and a tip, I was sitting in one of the beat up old chairs with my feet up on another chair reading a book and drinking my coffee. I put the book down, tilted my head back and dropped of to sleep for a moment. It probably didn't look too good for a customer to be snoozing in the coffee shop, and I suppose had this been a regular occurrence, the management might be compelled to say or do something about it. But this was an isolated incident from a regular, loyal customer. The owner walked by me, nudged me and asked, "Hey, are you alright?" I said I was fine and he proceeded to tell me, "Well, you can't be doing that here. You can't sleep here." I said okay, finished my coffee and when he was alone (not dealing with another customer) I said, "You know, I spend around $50 per week here. I don't appreciate you jumping my shit just because I fell asleep for a minute, once." He said he thought I was taking it too personally, that I needed to understand what it looks like to the other customers and that "it's not about the money." I said if it's not about the money, I'll happily spend mine elsewhere. All he had to do was give a half-assed apology that recognized he values at least his customers' money, if not his customers themselves. Something like, "I'm sorry you took it that way, I certainly didn't mean to offend you. I do value your business," even if he did not mean it, would have been more than enough. But he is a dick, and he probably has been his whole life. I gave GDC one star because I could not give it zero. read more

Beautiful coffee shop on Perkins road between the overpass and city park. Lots of seating inside and outside with free wifi. Only 4 stars because the selection of snacks could be better. They have the basics like bagels and muffins but would be nice to see salads or sandwiches. The outdoor seating area is very nicely shaded by trees. I have been coming to GDC for a solid year and half and have failed to leave a YELP review, shame on me! WELL LET ME TELL YA SOMETHING, this is my favorite coffee house in Baton Rouge (no rebuttal please) for many reasons. First, it's close to my home so grabbing a quick coffee for any reason is valid. Secondly, THE COFFEE IS ROBUST and full bodied and your order is made with love/care because the entire staff is friendly and attentive. The staff makes sure to spark up conversation and assure that your order is correct. They have plenty options of coffee and teas. NOW, the baked goods: if you like savory (wake up early) and attempt to get the ham & Swiss cheese croissant. Keep in mind: they run out of these pretty quickly, because they are just that good. If you have a sweet-tooth you have a plethora of options to choose from: cakes, cookies, granola bars, muffins and on and on. Personally, I am an addict for the chocolate muffin! Their baked goods are fresh and the variety is extensive. The atmosphere of this little coffee shop is authentic, peaceful and inviting. The patio area is peaceful and a great place to study or to relax. They also sell coffee beans by the bag here and the staff will happily grind your coffee beans to the grind of your choosing. Sweet neighborhood spot that I've been going to since I was a kid. The owners have changed but still a solid cafe with good scones, a great tea collection and an cute outdoor patio with cute night lighting. Also usually has good music that's not too loud and a bike rack. I love working in a corner and occasionally looking up to see other locals coming in, chatting with the baristas and the other usuals. Not all tables have easy access to outlets so if you're bringing a laptop, may want to make sure your battery's fully charged. Parking is hit or miss but manageable. read more

Great little coffee shop in the heart of the garden district. I love that they offer almond milk as well as soy. They do have a minimum charge for credit cards, but the great thing is that if you are going to be there for a while they will open a tab for you so you aren't forced to hit the mark for every transaction. I do wish there was more lighting in there though. It would be a mice nicer place to study with a bit more brightness, best by doing some well placed lamps. read more

Just tried this place a couple of times. I have to say I wasn't impressed. The coffee was not that good. They give you your coffee with no lid. The problem with that that is I burned my self on the way to wear I get my lid and cream. They require your to purchase a certain amount before you use your debit card. I had to buy a bottle of water as well, since I had no cash. The atmosphere is nice, but their are better coffee shop options nearby. read more

I was told to check this place out by a colleague, so I went with a friend. She got a croissant and tea, and I got a latte and a breakfast bar. The latte art was sloppy, it was too hot to drink the entire time I was there, and her croissant was stale. When she put it in the microwave to heat up, it absorbed odors, which means that the microwave wasn't clean. We were there at 9am on a Friday and nobody was there. I will not be returning as there are way too many good coffee shops in BR. read more

I have decided never to come here again. I have been coming to the cafe for about three months now, and the service is not very good. The first time I stopped in, I left without buying anything because the two evening baristas decided to keep their backs to me and pretend they didn't notice that I had walked in. I decided to give this place another try. I started coming in the mornings to do a little work. The morning barista is always a little too caffeine high. She is nervous, easily agitated, and her hands are always shaking. If more than three people are in the line, she starts panicking, making mistakes, and saying semi-rude things because she can't handle "the pressure." By pressure, I mean polite, friendly people waiting patiently for their coffee. When you pay for your food and drinks, she rushes you out of the way while you are still trying to sign your receipt. The food and refreshments here are good, but as with most cafes, the service can make or break the product. read more

I used to come here almost everyday until recently when the owner was extremely rude to my husband. He was parked outside across the street by the dance studio parking lot, waiting in the car for me to run in and grab some coffee. Well the owner was outside and told him to move and that she didn't care that I was paying customer inside. We own our own business and if we ever treated a customer like that I would be ashamed of myself. So I will not be going back here, I will drive further and go to Magpie. read more

This is our go-to place for the ground coffee we keep at home and for my occasional splurge on a latte. They roast and grind their coffee on site and have a no-frills approach to damn good coffee. My parents tried GD coffee at our home during Christmas and bought 3# to bring home to Houston. Not fancy, not pretentious, just great beans. read more

The coffee is fine. I love the sweets. But the management is what makes me give this place 2 stars. Their policies on 'no outside food or drink' and on 'paying to sit at a table' are both strictly enforced. Listen, college kids are broke. We can't always afford to pay to hang out at a coffee shop to do homework or meet with a group for a project. I've been asked to leave for snacking on carrots--they guy suggested I put my food in my car. Too bad I walked there on a hot day. In another instance, I kindly asked a barista to turn down the music and I got the reply "We're not allowed to change the volume of the music, sorry." What???? If you need a place to read, write, or meet up with folks, go to Highland Coffees--they deserve your business. read more

Garden District Coffee is unique among the Baton Rouge coffee shops in that it really does feel like a neighborhood coffee shop due to its location. The coffee is decently-priced and very good, as is the food (definitely check out the sea salt / toffee cookies if they have them in stock). There's a large outdoor seating area, which is great for when the weather is nice. The parking can be a little tricky at times, but unless you're showing up at peak times you should be able to get a spot. My only real gripe is that the WiFi (free) has recently gotten really, really slow, even when there aren't many people there. So be forewarned if you're planning on going there to work on a laptop for a long period of time that you may run into some difficulties. Ultimately, Garden District is a great shop in a great location, and I highly recommend checking it out. read more
