I realize there is already a listing for Outrigger & Castle, but since so many of these are…read moreprivately owned and you can rent them through the owner via VBRO or other venues I thought it important to start one of these separate since the amentities are slightly different. 1) I stayed in Unit 422 in building 41. 2) http://www.vbro.com/178959 3) The owner uses Outrigger to checkin/checkout/cleaning First, these units are a great price for the value of being on the beach, availability of grills, beach chairs, beach towels, laundry, etc... Second, they have an Expedia desk that is VERY helpful in getting you hooked up with your activities. We booked our Luau on Maui, surfing in Kauai, Plantation Gardens reservation for dinner, and our helicopter ride on Blue Hawaiian through them. I have reviews on each of these separately in Yelp. Third, most of these do not have air conditioning. While most on the web say it is bearable in the rooms with fans... if you are used to air conditioning at home (let's say in TX or Florida) make sure you get a condo with AC. Last, be careful about where your unit is located. I will talk specifically about my unit below but depending on how you plan to spend your time you want to be aware of what the distance is to the beach, parking, etc... About our unit. -Ground level -BBQ grill directly across the lawn in back -NO view of the ocean, no peek of the ocean, long walk to the ocean -furthest away from Outrigger registration and the Planation Gardens Restaurant (only Bldg 42 is further) -4 (?) sets of towels in the unit at checking [important since there are NO towel services with the room unless you pay $10 to Outrigger] Overall for what we paid you can't complain about the location and value of the condo. The resort is on a beautiful beach, up the street from Poipu Grill (hole-in-the-wall with fantastic burgers) and only a 30 minute drive from the airport. Make sure you stop at Walmart/Costco, etc... for supplies before you get here. The kitchen is empty but has everything you need to cook in terms of pans and dinnerware. We did not cook or use the grill as planned. We did not look at cable, but the DVD player does in fact work and we watched a movie on it. The shower is tiled but I was missing my showerhead at home. Might have been easier to get the sand off :) You can hear the people above you walking around, slamming doors, etc... We really needed an air conditioner the first two nights, tonight it rained so it is okay. However, I will never book another condo without AC again. We survived, but being hot on vacation isn't any fun. Supposedly phone calls are expensive. I didn't really pay attention to the Outrigger rep when she started to explain because we have cell phones and really don't need to talk to anyone, but she said EXPENSIVE. They have beach chairs and boogie boards in the unit along with a small lunch type cooler. Keeping all this in mind do not hesitate to use the VBRO above to book this condo. Unless you book in the hottest days of summer and hate being hot like me or REQUIRE being really close to the beach there really isn't anything to complain about.

The view was not of the water, but of the cactus garden below. It was a bit dated but everything was in good repair. The problems that troubled me were: mosquitoes every night. My arms were completely covered with mosquito bites both nights. I would post a photo but don't want to gross people out. Five huge bites on my right arm, four on my left. My friend got a bite on her eyelid the first night. Also, the floors are paper thin. You can hear every footstep above. As all the windows are screens and open, you can hear everything. The check out time is also very early 10 am and they were completely unwilling to entertain any sort of a late check out. I don't know about others but I like an 11 am check out and better yet a late check out at 12 when I am on vacation. The doors are also all plantation style like the windows, so you can hear everything from the bathroom in the living room (if you know what I mean). The good side, the beach was close, the restaurant was good (although they close very early at 9 pm), and the staff friendly. For the price, I expected a much nicer place, a reasonable check out time, and not to be bitten head to toe by mosquitoes.

The owner of the property had apparently decided to move back into the property. We were offered no consideration for the money they had held and the inconvenience of having to rebook with less supply and higher prices. And we have to wait 5 days for our money to be returned. They appear to be friendly people, but that's not a great rental experience and so I must give a 1-star review. UPDATE: The response to my review by the property manager is incorrect. The owners decided to move back into their place and did not honor their existing reservations. There were no emergency repairs needed at all. How do we know? We found a unit 50 yards away (without the help of this manager) and observed this to be the case. I think people need to understand that owners and property managers see their renters as cash flow versus people who might be inconvenienced.

Took them 18 hours (8:51 p.m. to 3:03 p.m) to fix it so we didn't have a working toilet through the night. I had to find a bucket on my own to use to fill with water and get it to flush. We also could walk about 8-10 minutes down to the beach and use those filthy toilets or ask the local restaurants. Next issue was a concern of our privacy in the bathroom. There was a large hole in the wall (partially covered with a picture) and I mean LARGE that led to a closet/storage area. If someone was in the closet, they could see directly into the shower. The hole was big enough to where someone could tip the picture out and literally grab you. Pictures attached. When I raised this with the property manager (who you never actually see on site), they simply said that nobody was in the closet so don't worry about it. Lastly was the bathroom was disgusting. More pictures attached. I asked for a partial refund and they said they would mail us a check (even asked for the mailing address). No check ever arrived and they stopped responding to my follow-ups.

He claims we "No Showed", but we clearly showed up and stood face to face with him as he fumbled through an explanation as to why it was our fault that he rented our room to someone else. VRBO failed to honor their rental guarantee which states we 'have the right to enter the rental for the ENTIRE duration of our rental term'. Throughout the process of trying to get a refund, Pete repeatedly sent multiple inappropriate text messages to my wife telling her to "F$#% You"... "Sh@# Head". He only stopped after we filed a harassment report with Kauai Police. We are considering pressing charges. Pete is very two faced and what he says to in front of you is not how he feels or what he thinks about you when he is behind a computer screen. Don't let him SCAM or BULLY YOU. GO ELSEWHERE

My girlfriend and I had a great stay in Kauai Garden Cottages (KGC) from 9-15 January 2014. We…read morestayed in the Torch Ginger suite, and it was beautiful. We also were fortunate that the second cottage was unoccupied, so the back porch, which is shared by both cottages, we had completely to ourselves. We wanted a place where we could hide away from the more "touristy" spots, and KGC was perfect. Kalaheo is a nice little village that's somewhat "off the beaten path," especially compared to Poipu right down the road. Also, the cottage is less than 10 minutes from the Kalaheo Cafe' and Coffee Company, a great little place where we ate breakfast daily. KGC was reasonably priced, clean and very comfortable. There is a laundry room, an ample supply of towels, both for showers and for the beach. They provide two complimentary beach mats which were very handy. The room has a small refrigerator and a microwave and a coffee pot. (They provide the first day's coffee.) Also, don't forget to look in the nightstand drawers. They have a copy of "The Kauai Underground Guide" which we found very useful. Some things to note. KGC was perfect for us because we didn't want to be in the more heavily populated tourist areas on South Kauai. However, from the front door to Poipu Beach is about a 20-25 minute drive, so if you have a late evening craving for Lappert's Ice Cream (which we did almost nightly), you're looking at about a 40 minute round trip. The wireless internet works great (we were able to stream Netflix with no issues), but the cell coverage is spotty. Also, if you've been to Kauai before, then you know about the chickens and the roosters. You'll hear the roosters crowing bright and early...but I think you'll hear that anywhere on Kauai. Overall, KGC was a great place to spend our vacation. If you're someone that wants to enjoy the beach and outdoor adventures by day, then retire to peace and quiet by night, then Kauai Garden Cottages will be perfect for you. One final thought...I met Thayne on the day before we left. Otherwise, we never saw or heard from the owners. I saw another review where the writer felt there were privacy issues, and I can tell you this is definitely NOT the case. Our room was very private and very quiet. Also, I accidentally left my Kindle behind in the room, and Thayne was kind enough to mail it back to me, even providing a tracking number. We couldn't be happier with our experience with Kauai Garden Cottages.

We were greeted by the friendly owners who offered great tips about where to eat and what to see close by. Unlike Ashley B's nasty review, the owners were not intrusive whatsoever. It actually felt comforting to know someone was nearby to make sure nobody broke into the place while we were away. The patio was a great feature. Very serene and beautiful, BUT - the freakin' rooster should be on KFC's next dinner menu. Damn thing started crowing at 4:30 am. Kauai is inundated with the birds, almost to the point of being a plague. Bring a slingshot. The downsides: -No TV (kids were a little disappointed, but we were out most of the day anyway.) -WiFi was a little touch and go and we had no internet on one of the days. -No hair dryers (wife and daughter weren't too happy about that.) -Lighting was not adequate at night, even with all the lamps and overheads turned on. Despite the minor downsides, we had a great time and would recommend Kauai Garden Cottages to our friends and family. Mahalo & Aloha.

Funny . . . Carol became spoiled after staying with me at such a wonderful vacation retreat! No wonder Carol wanted to experience more quiet solitude verses staying in the dorm rooms at Kauai International Hostel! Besides, the Kauai International Hostel was booked solid, so Carol had no choice but to stay at this little hotel on Rice Street. The room Carol rented had a very small room: bed, a very tiny bathroom, microwave, and a little refrigerator-that's all. Heading towards Lihue, no less than a block away from Motel Lani is a dynamite Chinese restaurant that Carol and I had the pleasure enjoying their fabulous chinese cuisine. Motel Lani is conveniently located close to the US Post Office, grocery store, about 1 1/2 miles from the Nawiliwili Beach where Duke's is located and two miles from the Lihue Mall Shopping Center where Costco is located.

Luckily our cottage was without major issues, and the fact that there were geckos and some wildlife in and around the cottage at times didn't bother us. This is in fact a tropical island and Kauai, after all. Still tremendously well kept properties. The set up is ideal for families and/or folks interested in golf trips. The property is sprawling, picturesque, and tremendously available. You can walk or golf cart wherever you'd like. We found it without major crowds even during peak child/summer break visiting times. This is likely due to the high number of owners who don't rent and the higher price cost. It was very peaceful but just enough other families around. There's a few adult only areas (pool, etc) for those honeymooning or getting away from their kids. The pool area next to the lodge/club and the spa are the two shinning stars. The pool is actually multiple pools, none too deep, and two different hot tubs of differing temps. The small tube slide is a hit for kids and adults. There's no lifeguard so beware but the average 3' depth makes it easier for parents to relax more (but still monitor!). The spa experience was amazing. It was one of the best massages I've ever had -- probably number two! -- and amazing spa benefits and layout, too. Believe it or not the $75 per day cost just to use the facilities is worth it between the steam room, sauna, hot and cold pools, and awesome treats. Highly recommending going through the self-guided multiple step traditional treatment. Don't worry the gym is free! Btw, they have a full selection of their own Peloton shoes. You don't need to bring your own. Tons of classes and personal trainers if you'd like. The daily activities are fun for kids. Make sure to sign up in advance. The club restaurant is fairly good as is the pool restraunt and bar but it's worth adventuring and cooking in -- the farm/farm stand has lots of free bounty each day. Go visit it! The staff were all super welcoming, friendly, and helpful. It's a laid back place but attentive (e.g., every 3rd day house-keeping). You'd do best to seek them out if you need it, and know it's not going to be immediate texts back to concierge. It's island-life style but still luxury stay vibes. Cottage is great set-up for in-laws/grandparents with separate Ohana king beds. Second bedroom in cottage itself can be made into twin beds. Very nice kitchen and living areas. Showers awesome and fun outdoor showers if geckos don't weird you out. Only wishes are for longer hours on the gym (closes at 6pm or 7pm some days, one day early at 5pm), and some easier EV hook-ups. This was a great use of our Hyatt points. We stayed her previously in a Villa for non-points, and it was wonderful for our family there, too. We'll be back!

They said they sprayed for pests and cleaned but we came home to more bugs. Including one in my bed. I find them crawling on my clothes that are hanging. It is incredibly sad and frustrating. This villa is not well kept. Our amazing vacation is ruined. I've stayed in Hawaii many times and never encountered this. Do not stay here! I asked him to move us to another villa or to the Hyatt down the street. He emphatically said no. Poor management. I am so so upset.
