Bought a mattress in the Salem store 10+ years ago. After multiple moves it still feels and looks like new. We purchased two mattresses from Gardner less than a year ago. I postponed writing a review until I had time to try it. Everything about the purchasing experience was stellar! The salesperson was super helpful and efficient. The delivery of the mattresses was professional and went without any glitches. The mattresses are high quality, with no odors and super comfy and supportive. The materials are topnotch as in the workmanship that went into making the bed. Most everyone knows quality when they see it and you will too if you decide on a Gardner Mattress. Yup, pains me to give Gardner Mattress such a poor review. Getting the mattress during COVID was easy. The drivers had their masks in while delivering my mattress. The mattress passed the 90 day warranty and then, of course, I discovered a problem. And that's where Gardner Mattress turned into a massive negative experience. It is like someone slept on a corner of my mattress before it came to me. So not cool. And the GM has been less than helpful. read more

Bought my first Gardner mattress more than 15 years ago. I was concerned about the (foam) pillow top and had it made separately so that I was able to turn the mattress and then replace the pillow top to even out the usage. I was very glad I did. The foam topping was HOT. After fighting with it a couple years---even installing a refrigerated pad underneath---made things much more comfortable but also a wet mess from reliquifying perspiration! In despair I junked the foam topper and replaced it with several cotton pads-----success! It has given perfect comfort ever since. I often break the cardinal mattress rule by sitting on it, but when the slightest sag sets in I either rotate or flip the mattress (not any easy job, my KS weighs a couple. hundred pounds) and I have a new-feeling mattress again. Bottom line, buy it and take proper care of it---Highest recommendation. read more

This is a tough one. I liked the idea of buying high quality, locally made mattresses, so we went to the store in Newton. They couldn't have been nicer. Very helpful and patient. Zero pressure to buy. Even let us return mattresses twice when we weren't comfortable once we got them home. Really great people. Couldn't have been a better buying experience. Unfortunately, we never actually found a comfortable mattress. Now we're stuck with an uncomfortable $1600 mattress and sleeping poorly. Wish we had our 15 year old mattress back. Going to have to buy something else, because we're now horribly sleep deprived. Hate the thought of this mattress ending up in a landfill so soon. I really wanted to like my Gardner mattress. Great people. Just wish I could actually sleep on the thing. read more

We had purchased a mattress at Jordans and after about 3 years, I was getting back aches each morning. A sag started to develop where I sleep after about one year. Eventually, I was sleeping in a pit.. I am a runner/triathlete and very trim so heavy body weight did not cause the sag. The sag is due to the fact that mattress manufacturers are moving away from normal old fashioned mattresses and using more latex like materials for padding in the tops. This makes the mattress feel great in the show room and makes it break down quickly so you will need a new mattress sooner. Works out great for the stores and manufacturers. We went to Gardner because they are one of the few places left in existence that sell normal mattresses with big coils and thick comfortable padding. We picked a mid level firmness king size mattress. The price was reasonable and the delivery smooth. After a week, the back pains were gone. It has been about a year now and I can say that the mattress is just great. No sags in the mattress and no back pain. I would definitely recommend the Gardner mattresses. read more

He has excellent knowledge of mattresses and you cannot beat the price/quality ratio that gardner provides. Overall excellent purchasing experience. This is a wonderful local business. I had my last mattress from them for 30 years and just replaced it getting the sacro. At the store, buying the mattress was a breeze; the salesman was very knowledgeable having worked at the factory, and he helped me choose what I wanted. The mattresses are made to order, and yet I received mine within the next week. It and the box spring were delivered at the exact time I was told and the guys who delivered it took off and replaced my old frame as well. The price is comparable with the mass -produced places, but this mattress has a cute photo of the original owner's son and his dog stamped on it! I hope to have this one at least as long as the previous one. read more

Gardner mattress is the worst company to deal with. I've sent emails and basically my complaints were ignored and dismissed. The General Manager did assure me he would elevate my complaint to the owner but I doubt very much this has happened. I won't bore the public by stating my complaint here, but rest assured, I would say stay away from the Needham store and don't bother writing to the General Manager; you'll just get a big blow off and be told the employee is a really good guy...! It's over-priced and not oriented to the customer at all. read more

This is THE ONLY company anyone should buy a mattress from ever again! A wonderful, caring, family run business where it seems they are all trained that the customer is KING! We had years of problems trying to return a mattress $3000+ from Jordan's that was damaged on delivery , only to have to keep paying them more money to swap it out once they finally agreed that it was damaged! My niece recommended Gardner Mattress! What a pleasure doing business with them! We both have bad backs and had so many problems with our old mattress from Jordan's that most of Gardner's hand made mattresses felt comfortable! The problem we had was that once we spent more time sleeping on the 1st one we selected, we realized that we made the wrong choice. It was too soft. The owner personally swapped it out for another, but it was too hard! This dear man was dealing with "Goldilocks"! Without any problem, they sent a third that they felt would be just right! And it was and still is!!! We were amazed that they were so generous with their time and the mattresses! ( they give them away). We can't tell enough people about this wonderful company !!! This is a great place to buy a mattress. My wife and I checked out the Newton store a couple of weeks ago as we were looking for something a little more "natural." Gardner had plenty of mattresses to try out, and the salesperson, Erik, was very helpful and knowledgeable. On delivery day, the truck showed up 5 minutes early, and the delivery people were in and out (taking away our old mattress and box springs) within 10 minutes. I feel really good about our purchase - it's nice to get a quality, natural, hand-made, customized product at a reasonable price while supporting a local business. Assuming the mattress holds up over the long term, this is where we plan to buy all of our mattresses going forward. Bought my last two mattresses at Gardner mattress. I have had a major back surgery and will pay anything for a mattress that works for me. Erik did not mind that I came back several times and spent an hour hanging out on the mattress I liked before buying. I have an electric bed frame for each of my beds that I bought there as well. Went to Jordan's first and found that for the talalay foam, which is what I got, there was little price difference. These mattresses are locally made by American workers. I like that. Wonderful, locally owned AND made mattresses. Salesperson is helpful and polite with zero pressure to buy. Mattresses are chemical/toxin-free. They hold up well and are very comfortable. There are a limited number of options which I find very helpful- it's not overwhelming but there are a few levels from basic to luxurious. Most people have probably never heard of this place because they don't do any advertising, most of their business comes from word-of-mouth (a neighbor recommended them to us). This company makes their own mattresses locally, has a good selection to choose from and very helpful sales people. We needed a thinner mattresses for our platform bed and they can easily customize the size of the mattress if needed. We also found the prices to be the same or better than what you would find at the other mattress chains. We went to Jordans and Sleepys which overwhelmed us with the choices, selections, styles, prices. Gardner seemed like a much better option, no gimmicks (sleep technicians in white lab coats?) and you had the pleasure of dealing with a small independent company with a decent return policy. read more

Buying a mattress is easily one of the most important purchases we make. But it's nearly impossible to lie on a mattress for 10 minutes in a store, and be assured that not only will it provide comfortable sleep, pressure relief, and support, but will also keep the muscles and bones of the back, hip and shoulders aligned. I looked at multiple mattresses and I went to multiple stores, and I encourage anyone to do the same. But there is a substantial difference between Gardner Mattress and other stores that leave the competition severely lacking. As I suffer from lower back pain, to me, my mattress is a far more thought out purchase than even my vehicle, and accordingly, I need to ensure that my next mattress alleviates the pains, spasms, and misalignment that my age, line of work, and the age of my mattress create. That being said, I will get to my point. I went to the Newton store, and I worked with Eric. I bought a mattress there, one of the firmest ones, and after a few nights on it I knew it wasn't for me. I returned it a few weeks later, and I purchased another one. Eric worked with me each time, and ensured that I not only found the right mattress but, more importantly, there was no pressure to find it immediately. Let me be more specific. If you go to Jordan's or Sleepy's they have the following policy: You can purchase a mattress and if it's not right you get one exchange and that's it. No returns, no more chances to find what's right for you. That's not only unrealistic, but it puts quite a bit of pressure on the buyer to find the right mattress right away. At Gardner, their policy is the following. You can buy, return, exchange any mattress you try within 30 days. You can walk away at any time, (although I can't understand why you would) and you can work with the staff to find the perfect fit even if it takes a few tries. Now lets discuss quality. The quality of the mattress at Gardner is ten fold what you'll find at a chain store. I say this with complete confidence, if you walk into Gardner mattress they will show you exactly what is inside their mattresses and the difference is part of their guarantee. A recent study says generic mattresses should be replaced every 4-5 years. I've had my last Gardner mattress for 15, and I expect I will have this one for 15 as well. Finally lets discuss the price. Gardner custom builds the mattress, they can add firmness, reduce firmness, what ever you, your body, or even your spouse needs and they do it all for the same price as these chain stores, and in some cases less. I spent less money on a high quality, custom built mattress, that will not only last longer, but I was under no pressure to keep it if it didn't fit my body after I tried it. Honestly, you can not beat that and if you can please write a post and let me (and other people) know how! I strongly recommend you shop around, and see what's right for you, but i would be surprised if you didn't end up buying your mattress at Gardner. I was told by my parents and my in-laws that I should try Gardner Mattress in Salem - How psyched was I to find that there is a small store closer to me in Newton! The sales people were not at all pushy, but pretty knowledgeable. The best part of this place is the CUSTOMER SERVICE. We were totally unhappy with our first (and second) choice of mattress...but every time we complained, they switched our mattress out and now we are SO HAPPY. It is obvious that this is the ONLY THING THEY MAKE...SO THEY HAVE PERFECTED IT!!!
