A hidden gem. In all these years of visiting Coney Island, I've never gone past Nathan's and I didn't know it was here. This is a good, old school Italian restaurant. If you like thick meaty pasta sauces, perfectly cooked al dente fettuccine that was homemade in the kitchen with flavorful yet light cream sauce, fresh artichokes as though it had come from the farm that left you feeling refreshed, and excellent service that's attentive to your every need, then don't come to this place. It's 54° outside, air-conditioning is blasting inside so hard that I need to wear my jacket, my husband has asked for a seltzer water three times yet to no avail, no one has come to refill our regular waters on the table, and every single thing that was plopped down on our table of our over $125 worth of food, tasted like absolutely nothing. Let's start with the appetizers, how do you screw up prosciutto wrapped scallops, I'll tell you how you do it, you leave them in the deep fryer for so long after taking them out of the freezer that they taste like chewed rubber. Cut to what was supposed to be a stuffed artichoke but what really comes out as an artichoke covered in oil soaked breadcrumbs plopped down on yet another plate of oil. Not oil with rosemary, not oil with any accoutrements to it, just a bowl of hot piping oil. The highlight of the evening however, what is the seafood fra diavalo my husband ordered extra spicy that a two-year-old could've eaten, and my beef braciole which needed to cook for over 35 minutes, that just tasted like dry stringy meat with no seasoning no flavor even when I put half of the bowl of Parmesan on top (which the guy forgot to even bring and didn't bring until five minutes after we asked for it, and also didn't bring a spoon for it, and then five minutes later brought the spoon for it) still tasted like nothing. Finally capped off with a gift card that my husband had to take all the way back into the kitchen and stand there and have someone type into the back register because our server didn't know how to ring up e-card even though the restaurant sells them online. He was however, offered the job of doing dishes by another server while he was standing back there though, so that's something. If you're looking for a job, this might be the place for you, but if you're looking for some good Italian, stick to Mulberry Street. read more

As a Brooklynite I am ashamed that I haven't been to this place before. It's an old school Brooklyn establishment that has been around for years. They obviously know what they are doing since the place was pretty full on a Thursday night. Nice service, but they did forget a dessert for a freind. Its traditional Italian food that is done well. No thrills or frills. I had the veal marsala which was very delicious, and a freind had seafood risotto which she apparently enjoyed. They have free valet parking accross the street. For apetizer I do suggest the baked calamari which are very flavorful. I didn't have dessert, but someone got cannoli, and it looked really good. We went to Gargiulo's tonight expecting the best Italian food in Brooklyn. Well the bread and the service were top notch! The rest of the meal was mediocre. The chicken Francese was moist but not all that flavorful and the eggplant parmigiana was good but I've had better. Our friends enjoyed their sole. One disappointment was the house salad that was iceberg lettuce and tomatoes which was more appropriate for a less classy restaurant. The house red wine was good while desserts were pretty much average and the decaf coffee quite good. The restaurant itself is physically very impressive as an example of a classic Italian restaurant and our waiter, who has been at Gargiulo's 27 years, was a real pro who added to the experience. Based on the service and especially the bread which brought back memories of Atwells Avenue in Providence, RI and Hanover Street in Boston's North End, I'd give the restaurant a five, but based on the rest of the food, no more than a 3. Not sure why they received so many stars as I don't find this place all that great. Strict dress code - no white t-shirts, shorts, and flip flops. They will turn you away if you wear them. I was talking to one of the waiters there who said the portions are pretty big as they are from the South of Italy so I'm assuming huge portions. Boy was I disappointed. We all ordered full size plates of pastas thinking it is enough to share but it wasn't enough. Good thing we had the appetizers to fall back onto. The food had no taste. The taste is all bland. We ordered a variety of items on the menu. The seafood, appetizers, and entrees for 8 people and yet, there's no taste to them. Our water is always empty.. not sure how hard it is to refill water. I would NOT recommend coming here. After I came home, my husband and I both were fighting over the usage of toilets several times. We were both convinced it was due to eating here. If you are going to get to attend a wedding they will feed you more than enough. From the fresh pizza to the finger foods you're going to love this place. Just stopped in to see where my dad celebrated his "Italian" Barmitzvah almost 50 years ago. It lived up to the stories he would tell. From the slick looking bartender that served us with a Goodfellows attitude, to the Italian American Princesses that took a break from the private rooms to chain smoke Virginia slims, this just felt like a place with tradition. Will make sure to try the cuisines next time. They have a nice little bar with a big flat screen. Nice place to watch a game actually. Drinks were reasonable. Re: Dress code--while it's laid back, you can't get in with shorts. We came to Gargiulo's because of the 4 star overall ratings on Yelp. We were impressed as we came in the space and the restaurant is grand. Once you get through, there's a bar on the right and a private room on the left. You then walk in and a set of stairway leads to the dining room. The ceiling is very tall and the dark wood wall panels are clean and made the restaurant even more cozy. There are also two fish tanks towards the back of the restaurant. I would say that the tables can be upgraded so that it's not wobbly. But overall, this place looks beautiful. Now comes the food. We ordered the linguine with clam sauce, fettuccine with chicken and mushroom sauce, seafood risotto, jumbo shrimp risotto, shrimp marinara with vegetables, and mussels marinara. The food overall was good for everyone but nothing overwhelming great. The shrimp in both dishes were a tad overcooked. The fettuccine was a bit too thick. I think it could've been rolled out one-two more times more. The seafood risotto came in a nice portion with the typical mussels and calamari. At the end of our meal, we also ordered the chocolate mousse cake and cheesecake made with ricotta. The slices were super small (and super expensive -- the chocolate mousse slice is $9) considering the price. The cheesecake was super dry and crumbly. I'm not sure if this is a Garguilo's tradition but when presented the bill, the waiter came with a container with small number pegs. We were to pick a number between 1 to 90. If the peg comes out as the same number, then the meal is on Garguilo's. Unfortunately, we didn't win. As we were having our food in Garguilo's, we couldn't help but compare their food with Ortobello -- a small hole-in-the-wall kind of Italian restaurant in the neighborhood. Even though Garguilo's decor is impressive, the food doesn't compare to Ortobello. The portion at Garguilo's is much smaller than most Italian restaurants. I would say come to Garguilo's if you want to impress someone with the space. If you want to enjoy fully some good Italian food, then skip this pricy place and head elsewhere. read more

This is old school Italian done Brooklyn-style. You won't find the chefs at Gargiulo's experimenting with new ingredients or new cooking methods. The food here is like it came from your imaginary Italian grandmother's kitchen (or real Italian grandmother if you are Italian). The restaurant space is huge and decked out with marble (or maybe faux marble...geology and interior design have never been my strong points) and honestly looks like they were going for a old Vegas casino lobby feel. Don't get me wrong, I don't say that in a bad way. Rather, I appreciate it here and it completely compliments the feel of the place. We had a group of 10 people on a Saturday and, while we had reservations, they were nice enough and flexible enough to accommodate our request to push the reservation back on about two hours notice. Once we arrived, we were seated in the back of the restaurant around a huge circular table. Our waiter, Dominic (complete with incredibly awesome Brooklyn accent) suggested family style appetizers for a table of our size. The choice was spot on. We quickly knocked out some of the best calamari I've had in NYC along with prosciutto and mozzarella, some sort of cheesy eggplant thing, and about 5 other items that I can't remember. As for the entrees, everything was equally good. Of those that I can remember, people seemed fond of the carbonara, the garlic chicken (I can't remember the actual name of the dish), and the fettuccine verde in Gargiulo sauce. And, to top everything off, they dropped off a cake to celebrate my friend's birthday. Thankfully, this wasn't your run-of-the-mill crappy, free restaurant cake. It was moist with a light frosting and, instead of regular icing between layers, it was filled with canoli filling. All told, Gargiulo's was a great time and really felt like a well kept, old school Brooklyn joint. I felt like I couldn't pass up an opportunity to visit this Coney Island institution that not only my parents know, but my Grandma as well. We arrived without a reservation, but that was no problem at all. Just note that they do not permit beach attire so bring a change of clothes if you are coming from the beach. The bread basket we started with was with great, but we knew this spot was a hit after tasting the meatballs with red sauce that we ordered as our appetizer. That easily fell in the category of some of the best we've ever had. My seafood risotto was just as good as it looks in the yelp pictures. My fiancé's chicken Parm was also really tasty as well and we have had a lot of famous Chicken Parms. We couldn't get over how reasonable the prices were including the wine, which was beyond amazing. Summer wine tasting at Gargiulos Tinton Falls met my expectations and beyond. The entire staff was so nice friendly and welcoming . The place is immaculate. Now down to the good stuff the food ! The food was amazing and they paired each course perfectly with a wine. I went with my sister, my best friend and her sister. Let's talk about Italian food. Better yet, let's talk about Italian American food. You know what I'm talking about. The real deal, South Brooklyn kind of Italian American food, rapidly disappearing and being replaced with pale "hipster" imitations at sky high prices and are found all over Manhattan, gentrified New North Brooklyn, Long Island, Miami, Las Vegas and elsewhere. Well, Gargiuo's is no pale imitation. This is the place which has been around for over 110 years. This is the place with the Great Room with high ceilings, dark wood panelled, bar up front with "the game on". Cozy well spaced tables and friendly professional tuxedoed waitstaff. Of course this is the atmosphere you want. It is the atmosphere generations of born and raised Brooklynites expect. After a day spent at Coney, we Greenpointers were pretty much famished and were very happy to be seated quickly without a res. We started with house red, mixed hot antipasto, outstanding garlicy crisp baked clams and a delicious oreganato stuffed artichoke. Then moved on to what for me is their house special pasta; Penne con Cavolfioro, which is pasta with oil, garlic, breadcrumbs, olives and roasted cauliflower. Stellar. Entree's were a classic textbook chicken scarpariello, cut into bite size pieces ON THE BONE in an amazing picante garlicy gravy, risotto pescatore with mixed fresh seafood, and a perfect grilled veal chop. Of course these places include home made potato crocquette and a delicious mixed vegetable. WOW. Then keepin it real, we went for spumoni and tartuffo, always terrific and sourced from Nasto's Gelateria in Newark. Portions were huge, service super nice, atmosphere was rollicking with happy families and totally unpretentious types ( a welcome change from North Brooklyn for sure). We'll definitely be back. My advice to y'all New Brooklyners and all others seeking "the real Brooklyn" is to hit up places like Gargiulo's and do it quick. They are becoming extinct! NOTE: Gargiulo's is fine dining with a minimal dress code. Here's my advice: if you are a disgusting slob in a sweaty T shirt, gym shorts and an attitude, please take it to the Boardwalk. Randomly came in here with my husband on Sunday since all the restaurants were closed and the only other options were McDonalds or Burger King and we were pleasantly surprised. We are from San Francisco and didn't know what to expect. Upon entering, it looks like a banquet hall - and indeed there was a wedding going on! The bride and groom just did their thang which was fun to watch and random people congratulated them - was like being invited to a random wedding! Also, since we're not used to hearing the thick NY Italian accent, we felt like we were in a scene from Goodfellas. Everyone seemed to know everyone else - asking about family, lent, children. Pretty cool to see in real life. I'm Asian-American and my husband is British, but we didn't get treated differently. The food is good, more family American-Italian restaurant and less Euro-Italian restaurant - but not pretentious and not high dining (not sure why people say you need to dress nice, we wore regular clothes and so did most of the customers). They serve a great bread basket with butter - I prefer olive oil so asked for some. I got the clam linguini ($15) and my husband got the regular spaghetti in tomato sauce ($13) (he's a vegetarian). Not very expensive. We also got the eggplant parm, but wish it was a little crunchier - kind of soggy but still delicious. I also liked that the server cut the parm for us and set it on our plates - we felt so special! At the end, our waiter played this dice game, where you pick a random number and if it's drawn your meal is on the house. I wasn't lucky, but thought that was a great way to end the night. My one complaint is that almost every dish feels a little heavy. I know it's Italian, but it doesn't have to always come off that way. My wife had spaghetti sorrentino and I had chicken parmigiana. Mine was average and the portion was about average, if that. My wife thought that her portion could also have been larger. I had never been to Gargiulo's, but I had heard about their amazing food for years! Recently a friend picked up trays of food from Gargiulo's for a Christmas party. We went for dinner tonight and found both the food and service were outstanding at Gargiulo's! I love this place! From the outside it looks like a regular catering hall in Coney Island. Inside it is beautiful, especially since the room was decorated for Christmas with garland and giant red ribbons. A Santa and large soldiers adorn the foyer area of Gargiulo's. (See picture). Lance, our waiter was fantastic. He was pleasant and attentive to us the whole time. Lee asked him questions about the food and Lance even went into the kitchen and asked the waiter about something specific for Lee. It's obvious that Gargiulo's really cares about providing outstanding service to the patrons. Besides waiters, there were also bus boys attending to the tables in a quiet way. We couldn't ask for better service! I ordered the seafood risotto - OMG it was so good. The risotto was creamy and delicious. Clams and mussels surrounded it, while shrimp, calamari and scallops covered the risotto. It was fantastic. The fish was so tender and flavorful, especially the shrimp and mussels. It came with a potato croquette. I usually put pepper on everything I eat. I didn't even reach for the pepper and realized afterwards that I didn't use pepper because the food was seasoned well (see picture). Lee had the veal marsala which was served with a plate of mixed vegetables. Lee is a former restaurant chef and thinks he makes the best veal marsala, so he hardly ever orders it. After eating Gargiulo's veal marsala, he said it was fantastic and he would order it again! He ordered spinach and a huge plate of spinach cooked with garlic and oil was brought to the table. Across the street from Gargiulo's is a large parking lot with an attendant which is fantastic, especially for a weekday evening. As we were leaving Gargiulo's, Lee said that we will be returning with our extended family in the Spring because he wanted them to see Gargiulo's as well. If you decide to go to Gargiulo's order the baked clams as an appetizer - they are amazing! Also dress up a little - you don't have to wear a suit, but a nice shirt and shoes are appropriate guys. This is a nicer place so you want to dress for it - the waiters are wearing tuxedos so you will look weird if you are under-dressed in the the typical cushine outfit (sneakers/t-shirt). read more

I had a dinner reservation to celebrate my son's high school graduation for today, Saturday, June 26th at Gargiulos Restaurant in Brooklyn. The owner, Anthony, refused to seat us as my son and his friend were both wearing shorts. Anthony told us to leave, he told me he didn't even want us standing in his restaurant as I tried to explain that this was a special celebration and that I was never made aware of their dress policy. Anthony had the audacity, not to mention, a total and utter meanness of spirit when he criticized my son's friend for fidgeting with his shirt sleeve as I stood there with my party of seven people and begged to be seated.. I tried to explain to Anthony that this young man has social anxiety and fidgets when he gets nervous. Anthony did not want to hear it. He demanded we leave and told us to "go eat pizza on the boardwalk." He told us we didn't look good enough to sit next to a party of people there to celebrate a woman's 90th birthday. WTF? Nowhere on Gargiulos's website is a dress policy posted. Not once when I spoke to Anthony himself to make this reservation over a week ago did he mention a dress policy. Not once did his employee, who I also spoke with on the phone to confirm the reservation, mention a dress policy. This man, Anthony, the owner of Gargiulos, ruined my son's high school graduation celebration. He mocked my son's friend who suffers from a social disability. Gargiulos is a landmark restaurant. No doubt Anthony is a successful man who earns a lot of money as the owner of this restaurant. However, after his discriminatory and downright mean behavior, mocking an 18 year old boy, he is not a successful human being. He is a disgrace in how he treats others. He should be ashamed of himself. He won't be, people like Anthony never are, but he should be. Shame on you Anthony for picking on a vulnerable young man. Shame on you and shame on Gargiulos Restaurant! I will never patronize Gargiulos again. Perhaps Anthony, instead of paying so much attention to his wallet, should pay closer attention to how he treats others. He would do well to show even a modicum of kindness, as opposed to the mean-spirited, discriminatory and shameful manner in which he treated an 18 year old kid. We were at Gargulios yesterday with SharonT for her sons graduation party. We had reservations and she spoke to Anthony himself and another staff member prior to us coming in. When my part of the party got to the front Anthony rudely said I am not seating you look what you look like. He was very loud and obnoxious . He embarrassed my son in front of many people berating him for his attire . He also noticed my son who has special needs was fidgety and nervous and kept on saying look at him I am not going to let him in .My son was very nervous and ran outside. I told Anthony the adults were dressed properly certainly he can make an exception. I did see other seated people in shorts there . I understand their strict dress code but they should make you aware of it when you make reservations. What I do not understand why Anthony had to be so rude , loud and obnoxious. The rest of the party came and my friends son was also in shorts . He said I cannot seat you leave here right now and go eat pizza on the boardwalk. He asked us to leave immediately . He should be more concerned about his nasty demeanor and stop making fun of people on the way they look. He is discriminatory against special needs people . He really should take a realistic look at himself and the way he speaks and looks. I also do not know why he needed 6 police officers and private security outside his establishment. Unbelievable restaurant. Classic Italian food and classic Brooklyn/Italian diners. The owner of the place is always on the floor. I've been here many times and it never disappoints. Favorite dishes are baked clams, sautéed vegetable with mozzarella cheese, and veal milense. 10/10. And the best is the game at the end where you can potentially win a free meal. read more
