Belize might be my favorite place on earth, and Garifuna Flava is a little piece of paradise on the South Side. If you miss conch fritters, red snapper stew, hudut, and darasa, you cannot go wrong. The rice and beans are delicious, but when the restaurant is selling via the Fooda pop-up, they definitely have to be mindful that the rice isn't dry. They do a really great job of making sure that the flavor of the rice is consistent and all the way through. The chicken is another issue. Aside from the fact that I don't eat dark meat, their meat has not been well seasoned either time I had their food. Lots of fat and bone. A quality selection of meat could certainly change this. I would have their rice again anytime, though. read more

This place rules. It's all so good, the snapper, the chicken, the stewed beans, everything is delicious. We also had them cater a gathering for 20 people- everyone was raving about the food. This is a hidden gem on the south side of Chicago. I'm a north sider (Avondale Neighborhood) and I'm glad I made my way to this restaurant. You will be amiss if you didn't try this place. One of the the few restaurants featuring dishes from Belize. My favorite are simple: beans and rice w/plantains. However, I've had several items from the menu and you can't go wrong with any of them. I sampled the jerk wings, panades, cabbage, potato salad, king fish, and coconut tarts - and everything was off the chain. I didn't know when I went that it had already been featured on Guy Fiori Drive-in, Diners and Dives show! (Food Network) It's that good. Came here for a group dinner with 12 other friends. We wanted to learn more about Belize food and culture before we go on spring break to Belize in a few weeks. The food is delicious. However, his recommendations were great- we ordered the conch fritters to start with. They were served really hot and were very delicious. For our entrees, we ordered the jerk chicken dinner and ox tail stew, both came with rice and beans. For our sides, we chose Belizean salad and stewed cabbage, great choices!! Finally, for dessert, we got warm pound cake with caramel sauce, again very delicious. At the end of our meal, when we were paying, our server brought us a homemade gin mixture which contained various bark, spices and herbs, pretty potent stuff but made us feel like houseguests. My thought after I left this place was "the drive there was interesting!" But not so sure that the drive (from the city) was worth it. I had the good fortune of hitting a couple of Caribbean cuisine places in 2 days and, arguably, in a good position to do a non-government funded test using unsophisticated sampling techniques. I must say that while the offerings were solid at GF, there is betta cuisine from da islands in Chicago maan. Them people at Ja Grill be makin' some sweet delectables that be winnin' out in the yummy to the tummy department hands down man. Had this today for lunch at my office via a pop-up Fooda cart. The food was flavorful but the portions were small and they up charge for 1 additional plantain which seems a little stingy. I was there towards the end of their daily run and they had a TON of food still. I had the Jerk Chicken which was mostly bones and fat, not a whole lot of meat on top of cabbage. Cabbage was good but nothing ground breaking. I was hoping I would enjoy it more given the reputation but maybe its just the Fooda pop up- perhaps the restaurant is a little more generous. read more

We enjoyed this place! Kid friendly. Atmosphere and climate is warm. A fam of three got up for our large group and gave their seats up. Wait staff was very attentive. We had the conch fritters, panades (corn patties with buffalo hash fish), garnaches (fried tortilla chip with refried beans,cheese and salsa. I had the king fish with the rice and it was very good. My sister had the oxtail stew which was the best I thought. My other siblings and husband had the Hurut Baruru with Falamou (coconut soup with king fish and mashed up plaintain) which was yummy!
