The expectation going in given the name was that the ramen would be extremely garlicky and flavorful, and that's exactly what it delivered. If you're coming in for a constant punch of intense garlic flavor throughout the meal, this is for you. The inside has a cool unfinished look. We got the ramen and the mazesoba. The ramen came with a very flavorful broth, thick noodles, chashu, lots of bean sprouts, and lots of raw garlic. I wish it came with an egg. The broth was very flavorful and thick. The mazesoba came with a flavorful sauce instead of broth, the same thick noodles, chashu, bean sprouts, raw garlic, fried onions, and a raw egg yolk. Both also come with umami fat, which is flavored pork fat, and it does add a lot of flavor. I liked that we could make customizations using the order form. The noodles were thick, which I usually like, but these were too doughy. The big heap of bean sprouts was great and a good break from the noodles. With the ramen, the soup by itself was a good occasional break from the noodles, which you don't get with the mazesoba since it only has a sauce. The chashu was a thick cut and flavorful, but not as tender as I hoped. The staff were friendly and attentive. Overall I preferred the ramen over the mazesoba because of the break in noodles. Did I have a good time eating this? Yes, but I also got a little tired because it was too flavorful. This is an intense meal. Mints and floss were available, and honestly necessary. Went in for midweek ramen dinner at Garlic High since we've been watching it come up on lists of highly rated ramen places in the south bay. A small, unassuming place with lots of tables to sit on and ample parking. The service was efficient and pleasant. We got our table quick as there wasn't a long line. They give you a form to fill out to order. Ordering is pretty straightforward since they offer ramen with a single broth type and limited toppings. We ordered the vegan Mazesoba with veggie bomb with a raw egg, chive kimchi, death sauce, and mala chilli oil, and a Chashu ramen with umami bomb and mala chilli oil as the side. The vegan Mazesoba comes with bean sprouts as vegetables and garlic which is their claim to fame. I was a little disappointed that they didn't have any vegetarian or vegan broth. The chashu ramen was good but just had one taste profile. This just might be because of the style of ramen they sell which is the Jiro style of ramen. My rating is just based on the fact that this style of ramen is not our preferred style of ramen and that they do not offer a vegan/vegetarian broth option. read more

Garlic High is a garlic lover's dream come true. Don't come here and complain that it's too garlicky... it's in the name. If you love Jiro style ramen and bold, punch-you-in-the-face flavors like I do then don't let the negative reviews scare you away. The mazemen was SO good. It was much saucier than the mazemen I'm used to, which I actually loved. You can customize the garlic and fat levels, and of course I went heavy garlic and heavy fat. I was tasting raw garlic for days after... and honestly, I wasn't mad about it because I love raw garlic. That said, I'd probably do normal fat next time. Heavy fat was delicious but definitely rich, and I don't think I need to pay for extra garlic either because the regular amount is already plenty. But it also definitely doesn't hurt to! I really loved the chives side dish too to cut the heaviness. The ramen was also amazing. The broth was super porky, garlicky (obviously), creamy, and fatty. I saw reviews saying it was light but that wasn't my experience at all. It had tons of flavor and richness without needing more ramen sauce. Maybe it varies by day but mine was exactly what I wanted. It felt really authentic and the service was so kind even though the staff looked completely overwhelmed. I'm happy they're doing so well. If you're like me and spent forever trying to decide between the ramen and the mazemen, honestly, you can't go wrong. I'm glad I tried both. I got a side of soup (about $6) with my mazemen, which gave me the best of both worlds. Next time I'd probably order the ramen because the hot broth cuts through the richness of the fat and raw garlic so well but they're both delicious. I circled what I wanted on the menu sheet with the red pen and waited about 10 minutes for my small ramen with regular amounts of umami fat and raw garlic. The thick flat chewy wheat noodles were great in the hearty broth. Stir the raw garlic in the hot broth first to take the bitter edge off. Visited with a fellow garlic loving friend in our quest to understand the limits of garlic. We both got mazemen bowls, and chose the MAX garlic option (+$1), so we got heaps of garlic in our bowls - this was absolutely delicious but we reached our limits of raw garlic here. Would love an option to add more stewed garlic or roasted garlic to the bowl too!! The chashu here is also very interesting - they serve it as two large chunks of stewed pork rather than the typical thinly cut slices. We enjoyed it, but it did get in the way while trying to mix our mazemen, and some of our other friends noted that they prefer thin slices. Speaking of mixing, I think larger bowls would make mixing the noodles a lot easier, as we didn't have much room to work with. read more

Awesome little local ramen spot! They keep the menu super simple--just regular ramen and brothless ramen--but you can customize pretty much everything. You get to choose your size, garlic level, fat, veggies, meat, and any extra toppings you want. I rolled in for a late lunch around 1 PM on a Sunday and managed to snag the very last open table! We tried a small ramen and a medium brothless ramen. The noodles were perfectly thick and chewy. The regular ramen broth was super flavorful, and the bowl was completely loaded with garlic and content. The brothless ramen was awesome too--definitely on the heavier side, but still delicious. Service My family came on Wednesday 10mins after they had just opened. So, 5:40pm. We had no wait and were able to sit down right away and ordered right away. We waited about 20mins for all our food to come out. I heard that on the weekends it can be a bit of a wait/ line. The small parking lot can get crowded during peak lunch hours. Remodeled interior with counter or table seating. A couple of large groups of 6+ can be accommodated. One unisex restroom. The service is super welcoming, helpful, and attentive. She had such a bubbly personality. The menu is simple. Either choice of Ramen or Mazesoba. I went with their Signature Ramen (4/5). Jiro-style ramen with ultra rich tonkotsu broth, thick chewy noodles, customizable toppings like minced garlic, back fat, beansprouts, and cabbage. I really liked the thick noodles which were perfectly cooked. The pork chashu were thick and meaty yet tender. If they pan-seared them or flamed brulee'd the meat like Misoya used to do. Garlic lovers, this is the place. The regular amount of garlic is already going to be a lot for regular people. The restaurant is small, there's a decent amount of parking in an awkwardly shaped parking lot. So plan ahead, and get on the waitlist. Service is quick once we got inside. Order by QR code is not available yet. Order is by paper selection with options provided. Our server was quick and confirmed our choices before taking the selections to the kitchen. The table we were at four top where a coupe two tops were pushed together. These tables easily slid around with the slightest touch, which was annoying. Paying after our meal was slow and we didn't know we were supposed to go to the cashier. We just waited for someone to stop by our table for a while. We were new and did not realize the portion sizes. Small would have been fine for a full grown adult. Veggies means bean sprouts and cha siu are thick cut. I ordered my medium ramen with max garlic and regular veggies, no other subs or adds. There were probably 20 garlic cloves minced for my bowl. I did ask for the max. The cha siu was thick cut and fatty so I'm glad I went with light umami fat flavor. There was also a mountain of bean sprouts on top of the thick cut ramen noodles. The whole bowl was a spectacle. Other bowls in the group had regular or light garlic and you can smell and taste the difference. Extra seasoning and sauces were provided at the table but really not needed unless you want spicy. WOWSERS! Talk about GAAARLICKY! Whooboy! If you love fresh raw garlic in your ramen, this is the place for you! They only serve three items here - their Signature Ramen, Mazesoba (brothless ramen) and the Savage Chashu Bowl! Easily customizable, you can add a variety of toppings, the amount of garlic, the amount of noodles (or no noodles), umami fat, etc. Thus the broth can be thicker or thinner based on what you add. The base, however, is by itself on the lighter side. On the table, however, is a rack of condiments that include a bottle of concentrated broth. If you like a more robust broth, add a little bit of soup condiment for extra flavor. I get why the default is lighter than normal, for those who like it less salty. Otherwise, it would be difficult to tone down the level of saltiness without adversely affecting the overall taste. I have to say that this ramen shop has the largest hunk of chashu of any ramen shop I have visited! The slice is easily 3/4 of an inch thick! (And very tender and deliciously fat, too!) For first time customers, they recommend going small bowl size and light of garlic. And that makes sense. For repeat customers, they have an offering of free condiments - from Ramen broth, vinegar, chili powder, etc. to change the flavor. Finally got to try this place and thought we would go when they opened and we got there about 15 mins before they opened and they already had a line. It's a small place so when we left - the line was even longer so be prepared to wait. We ordered off individual piece of paper that allows you to select EXACTLY what you want and your name so you know it's your order. The server reviews with you and places the order. They were very fast and delicious. I got one small Jiro-style Ramen w/150 g noodles that comes with 1 slice of chashu pork. Got it with regular everything (Veg, Garlic and Unami fat), and I added quail eggs. Hubby got the medium Jiro-style Ramen w/200 g noodles and it comes with 2 slices of chashu pork. He also ordered with regular everything. We needed a base line to know how to order next time... First off - the broth was SO GOOD - loved the flavor of the tonkotsu broth but I will say - I will go lighter on the garlic next time as they give you ALOT for regular. They give you both chopped and grated so you get both textures! But what i was impressed with was all the veggies they added on top, which consisted of bean sprouts and chopped cabbage. Gave the dish a crunch and helped the richness. AND the chashu was perfect. Meaty and very tender and so easy to eat. Because of the thickness of the cut - it didn't fall apart - you could actually get good bites of the perfectly seasoned and tender chashu. Next time I may order an extra chashu. And I have to give a shout out to the "ramen" noodles. They are not your typical "ramen" texture and size. They're on the thicker side so much chewier and they absorb the broth perfectly. Waiting: Came on a Saturday afternoon and the queue will really long. We joined the long queue that snaked into the carpark without realising we had to join the waitlist on the iPad inside the store. Eventually when we realised it was a virtual queue, people who came behind us actually got a spot before us, that was kind of annoying. If you like garlic and hand made thick noodles, this place is for you. This place is popular, we came at 11:30 sharp on Sunday and there were already 5 parties ahead of us. When we finished and walked out at 12:15, the line was down to the end of the building. Garlic High is easy to spot as it has its own building with a big sign indicates it's a Japanese cuisine. It serves basically 2 kinds of noodle, ramen with broth and mazesoba, which is a dry mix but a small amount of sauce at the bottom. Even the ramen doesn't have a big bowl of broth like other ramen places. If you want extra broth, the menu charges $6 for it as a side. They only serve the small size when we visited, which is more than enough to fill us up. The small size contains one thick slice of cha siu for 150g, the medium is 200g and large 300g per the menu. I got the mazesoba which came with a beautiful orange yolk egg on top, loads of bean sprouts and fried onions. These ingredients were so loaded that I thought they forgot to add noodles. I had to dig in really hard to find the noodles at the bottom of the bowl. The noodles definitely tasted as freshly handmade, they were chewy and thick, not the kind I like, and I felt that it was a bit too big a texture for this style of dish. It's maybe double the thickness of the noodles used in the Chinese dish Shanghai Stir Fry. Once mixed in, the egg disappeared and I couldn't taste it. Unlike in hot pot you put a raw egg in the dipping sauce, every piece of hot food dipped in will pick up some bits of the egg and adding silky coating to the food, mixing an egg in this huge amount of bean sprouts just made it disappeared. I do like the fried onions that add aroma and texture. To me, the whole bowl was light in flavor even I chose everything regular, so I had to pour in their ramen sauce and fish powder to add flavors, which I find it interesting to have these condiments. When I placed my order online, I was asked about the level of umami fat and I chose regular (anything on top of that is extra cost), but I couldn't tell what that was from my bowl. The ramen came with the broth maybe half way over the bowl only, again, a big satisfying piece of cha siu and loads of bean sprouts. My friend got tired of chewing the noodles and complained that it's not the kind of noodles she enjoyed. This is the newest place in Sunnyvale, when it comes to good ramen! It looks like it hasn't been around a long time so I decided to give it a go. The menu is very simple. Very few items but when you taste the food.... It's all they need! I opted for the ramen noodles with broth and a raw egg side to add. The pork was nice and flavoured with perfect seasoning. The broth was so flavourful and the noodles were plentiful and thick! The added raw egg gave it a nice creamy texture and added egg flavour. I ordered a medium, which was a lot bigger than I thought.. you get a nice hefty portion of food, so trust, you won't leave hungry and get your moneys worth. The side of pork/cabbage with rice was also very tasty. The pork is nice and seasoned well. I must admit, I ordered too much food. I should've ordered a small ramen with the side dish. The ambiance was amazing, vibes of a small ramen shop in Japan. It was very lively and just super friendly. The staff was amazing, checking in on customers and serving you water constantly. Amazing service. The price is reasonable, but as mentioned before, you'll get your moneys worth and oh so good There is a good sized parking lot where you can park while you eat. Very traditional and authentic ramen in every sense. My boyfriend who has lived in Japan (and ate here with me) and many of my JET program buddies thought so too from my IG story that I posted. None of that extra bells and whistles stuff, they stick to what they know and are good at. Minimal menu, much like restaurants over in Japan. We came right when they opened and there were still a couple spots left in the parking lot. This used to be the Seto Japanese restaurant/fish and chips spot and still has the old signage for it. Once you get closer to the door, you can see it says Garlic High. There's a waitlist for you to physically sign in on if you don't make it into the first group of immediately seated parties. There's a couple tables and some counter seating, but it can get packed pretty quickly (like our visit there on a Friday afternoon). Ordering happens through a QR code and you send the order to the kitchen. We got the: 1) Signature Ramen: -This is their Jiro style ramen. Super rich and comes with a hearty, pork based broth. Noodles are thick and have a nice chew to them and it also comes with a ginormous amount of bean sprouts, cabbage, pork belly, garlic and umami fat. -Boyfriend barely finished this and we had to take some of the leftovers to go. 2) Mazesoba: -This is their brothless ramen. -This is also Jiro style and also has thick, deliciously chewy noodles, along with a ginormous amount of bean sprouts, a rich savory sauce, cabbage, pork belly, garlic, fried onions, egg yolk, and umami fat. -I've had mazesoba before and this is the richest, thickest, most filling one that I've ever had. I usually get to the point where I can mix in the vinegar and mix in rice at other mazesoba places, but this one was just so heavy and filling (in a good way) that I never made it to that point. We packed some vinegar to go to add some taste when we had the leftovers though. -Great mix of tastes and textures even without that extra step. I got some quail eggs with this and they give you 5. I love quail eggs so this was a nice addition. Both of us got the garlic max which was this HUGE dollop of garlic on top of our ramen and it was super garlicky. Boyfriend said it was too much for him, but if you're a real garlic lover, it's a must. VERY BAD, but I despise bean sprouts unless they stop tasting like bean sprouts (looking at the sesame beansprout banchan). When I say a ginormous amount of bean sprouts, I'm talking like a mountain, like whoever was preparing this has massive hands and just used both of them to scoop in bean sprouts. I usually can scoop out the beansprouts and give it to a fellow beansprout enjoyer (my bf in this case), but it took me at least 10 minutes to do this, giving you an idea of how it was. This didn't ruin the taste or experience for me, since I'd just have given it to someone else anyways but this is one of the features of their ramen that makes it super authentically Japanese. Some free toppings that you can get here are fish powder, Kewpie mayo, and chives kimchi (deliciously adds a bit of a sour kick if you need to refresh your tastes buds). Unfortunately, they were out of death sauce when we were there. Aside from the 2 things that we ordered, the only other "entree style" dish they have is their chashu bowl. I loved the thick chewy noodles (much thicker than other ramen places' thick noodles). Chashu was good on the outside with the fat, but dry in the center. The broth was rich and porky. They suggest getting regular garlic and umami for your first time, but I'm glad I got light garlic, as it was already more raw garlic than expected. The small has 150 grams of noodles and 1 slice of chashu. I was satisfied but for a bigger person than me, I don't think it'd be enough. Checked out Garlic High and I'd give it a solid 4 stars. The ramen here is definitely good, but it's the kind of place you have to be in the right mood for. This isn't a light ramen. It's meaty, thick, super garlicky, and very filling. The broth is rich and almost fatty in that comforting, indulgent way, and the noodles are thick and chewy which makes the bowl feel really hearty. If you're someone who loves bold garlic flavor and super savory ramen, this place will probably be right up your alley. The noodles were good too, thick and chewy; handmade quality. They allow you to adjust how much garlic to have in the ramen. Also had the Chashu Pork Bowl was also good. If you're not afraid of garlic breath, then this ramen is for you!! Garlic High is a new spot in Sunnyvale and they only serve TWO things: ramen or mazesoba. You choose the size, pick your umami level and garlic level, and add toppings/ sides if you want (although these medications are at an extra cost). We tried both the ramen and mazesoba with normal umami and garlic, and the noodles are soooo good! They're thicker and chewier than you would usually see. Both the broth for the ramen and sauce for the mazesoba are rich and super flavorful. I did think the ramen broth was slightly salty though and I'm wondering if modifying to less umami would help. The chashu slice that comes with it is thick, altho not the most tender l've had. Both options are solid but I would probably lean toward the mazesoba next time! For the mazesoba, they have fish powder and vinegar on the side so you can tweak the flavor. We ordered smalls and were definitely full! The shop is a pretty small space, so I'd recommend going early. There were a few people waiting before they opened (including us) and we were seated at the counter as a party of 2 where we ordered via a QR code! I've never had Jiro-style ramen before, but this place caught my eye when I saw it open up recently. I'm a sucker for garlicky foods though, so I was interested to check it out one evening. We came on a Fri evening around 6 pm, and we were the second group in line. The restaurant is a little small, with a handful of table and counter seating. The waiting area is a couple of chairs outside of the restaurant, which isn't all that ideal for peak dinner hours where several groups can be waiting or the chilly Bay Area winters. However you put your name & number, and they state they will call your phone if you're not present at the time your name is called - perfect if you end up sitting in your car while waiting. When seated, the process moves fairly quickly. If you've been to Ramen Nagi, then the ordering process will seem familiar to you. You're given a sheet of paper to circle your options, albeit with fewer categories. For my first time, I opted for the Ramen with Regular levels for the Garlic and Umami Fat and chose a Small bowl (my boyfriend got a Medium bowl). Overall I'm glad I got the Small bowl - the bowl itself was plenty filling and was the right portion size for me! If you're feeling super hungry, definitely opt for the Medium bowl. I loved the rich garlic flavor in the broth. The chashu was tender, and easily broke off with each bite I took. I think I've also seen the light now with regards to thick, chewy noodles in ramen - I don't think I can go back to thin ramen noodles! If you like chewy noodles, you'll enjoy this spot. The umami fat was a little much for me, especially towards the end where you can see some of the fat globules on the surface of the broth. Coming back next time, I'd want to try Light levels of Umami Fat, but I also want to try the Mazesoba! This spot is definitely a win! read more

I ate here with my boyfriend over the weekend and was really excited after reading the reviews. However, I feel like the wait could've gone by a lot faster if there were more people working. There was only one server, and I saw a large table left uncleaned for 30 minutes before he finally got to it. All in all, we waited a total of two hours before getting our food: an hour and 10 minutes to be seated, and nearly another hour for the food to arrive. Even people who were seated after us received their food way before we did. The service is extremely slow, as there were only "1.5" chefs in the kitchen (most of the time I only saw one chef; other times I saw two). On the other hand, we both thought the noodles were extremely well-made with the perfect amount of chewiness.
