I had reasonable expectations for this place because it was recommended. The place is dirty and poorly decorated. Like every surface is slimy and there are crumbs everywhere. The bathrooms are gross. Beyond the grunge, the staff is downright rude. Seriously, at least pretend to like your job or your customers. Put on a fake smile and do your job. Not these guys. The food is pretty bad. The popcorn chicken was a generous portion but it has almost no flavor. The spicy wontons were just strange and chewy. The beef noodles were again cheap beef with chewy tasteless noodles. Glad to check out this location of Ox 9 on Castro Street. I love their hand-pulled noodles and was in the area. This location has a nice outdoor dining area as well as interior. And like other locations, service is fast. You order from a QR code at the table, and food is brought out. My chili oil noodles, which I have gotten at other locations, weren't quite as spicy as other spots. I had them add beef, and it was the sliced rounds of beef, not the stewed beef as in other locations. My friend found the lamb with noodles a bit too spicy, might have been him. This is my first time trying this place, but not my first time trying hand pulled noodles. When they say spicy, they really mean spicy. Their spicy pig ear and spicy beef was a four out of five for those who usually don't eat spice. but the flavor of those appetizer are really, really good. The pig ear was nice and crunchy, and the sliced beef was really tender and soft. Now this was my first time trying to put noodle with more of a peanut sauce. When the staff speak better Chinese you know it's good. I also appreciate the are English and Chinese menus; you can never tell exactly what it is from the English translation. I can say the noodles are definitely authentic. Some places they have knife cut noodles instead of knife shaved noodles so I was glad they actually had the shaved ones. The broth is flavorful, the meat as well and they didn't skimp out on it. This is the best chain for authentic Chinese noodles I know of. Service is good too. Got here at around 5 PM on a Tuesday night and it was relatively empty, left around 6:30 and if you came in then there still would be no wait time but it did start to get fuller. We tried the Mala Spicy Beef Noodle Soup and the Langzhou Handpulled Noodle Soup. The Mala one was ordered with the large flat noodles, which I would highly recommend as they absorb the flavor extremely well. I would recommend asking for a pair of scissors to cut them tho as their a longly connected strong of noodles. Mala flavor was definitely there as well. For the Langzhou Handpulled Noodle Soup, it wasn't as spicy as I would prefer but if you can increase the spice level with the provided chili oil on the table. I got the normal round noodles but I thought they were rather thin, and look to try the medium round noodles next time. There great thing about this place is that it's not crazy expensive, the food comes out in like 10 minutes, and their noodle quality is great! Just have to make sure to order the right things. The (dog-friendly) outdoor seating didn't have much ambiance, but the interior looked pretty casual too. We ordered a few starters to share between the 4 of us - Cucumber With Garlic Sauce (nice, refreshing), Marinated Cucumber Salad (more of a wasabi flavor), and the Spicy Wontons (couldn't have these, but everyone else loved them). For my entree, I was somewhat limited as a non-pork eater, and chose the Chili Oil Noodles with Braised Beef. These were pretty good, and the beef was especially well-prepared and soft. I kept seeing this place along Downtown Mountain View since its grand opening, and I've been interested in trying this place out. We came by on a chilly evening in December for some much needed warm soup noodles. We showed up by 5:30 on a Sat evening and were seated quickly, but the dinner crowd was emerging when we left the restaurant an hour later. My boyfriend and I both got soup noodles - I opted for the Lanzhou Hand-pulled Noodles (no spice, belt flat noodles) and he got the Braised Beef Stew Noodles (spicy, large flat noodles). Both soups came out fairly quickly. I loved the chew of my belt flat noodles, and it was a good thickness as well. The no spice broth was fairly light overall, but I wish there was more flavor in the broth. Mainly tasted like a very light salted broth overall. My boyfriend's broth was surprisingly not spicy by my tastes, and I have a pretty low tolerance towards spicy foods (for example, hot cheetos is on the upper level of my spice tolerance, and his broth was less spicy than that). If anything, his broth was more flavorful with barely a hint of spice. We weren't sure if it just happened to be the day we showed up or if it was truly intentional, but I guess we'll have to come back to see if that's the case! We ordered spicy wontons, spicy ground pork dry noodles, and braised beef with Chinese pickle noodle soup. The wontons had well-seasoned meat and thin dumpling skin. The chili oil that came with it wasn't very spicy, and all the flavor was towards the bottom. That being said, a lot of the flavor came from the meat, which I had no issue with and enjoyed quite a bit. For both the noodle dished the noodles were well-cooked. They had some chew to them, so they weren't over- or undercooked. It's nice to be able to choose the size of the noodles as well. The spicy ground pork dry noodles had good meat as well, and the sauce mixed into the noodles well to spread the flavor. For the braised beef with Chinese pickle noodle soup, I really enjoyed the broth. I was rich and flavorful without being too heavy. The beef was flavorful and tender, which complemented the noodles well. I personally like the Chinese pickles to add a bit of acidity and balance to the dish. However, for both noodle dishes, I will say that the bok choy that comes with it is a bit bland, and I think it was just blanched in unsalted water. Given how tasty this is a non-issue and me just being picky. Overall, really enjoyed the food here. I will say that it is a bit crowded within the restaurant, which is to be expected given that we came in with the lunch rush. Convenience: Have been to this location twice. Appreciate that you can add yourself to the Yelp! Waitlist and the wait is fairly reasonable for a table of four - people are in and out fairly quickly. The noodles are a safe option for myself, my husband, and my two kids which is a win! Pro tip I've tried ordering something separate for my kids and it's never worth it (may just be because they're picky and inconsistent, your kids might be better!!) and I've found the $5 extra noodle to be a good option so we can order order things besides a bunch of noodles. I have also really enjoyed the marinated cucumber (fun swirly cut but spicy!!) and cucumber with garlic, but my husband doesn't like cucumber so I always feel some guilt. We also are poor examples of Chinese adults and get the popcorn chicken here to make sure our kids get some protein (albeit deep fried) with noodles. Service: The waitstaff are pretty swamped here but they're generally fine. You order online via their app. They're also good about bringing plastic water cups, bowls, and utensils when they see you with kids. Pricing: Very reasonable and affordable. After trying the Cupertino and Mountain View locations, we think the MV location is better! I remember the soup base at the Cupertino location not being very flavorful, but everything was delicious and especially comforting on the cold night that we came. We ordered two spicy braised beef noodle soups (which had a slight kick but that my older two kids eat), one pork noodle soup (which was pretty spicy), and one vegetable soup, which was not spicy and the kids could eat. I find that there is variance amongst the many locations in terms of their consistency and flavors, but thankfully i found that the mountain view one is as good as the cupertino one. the noodles have good QQ (chewiness, tooth) to them, the broth is very flavorful, whichever one you get, and i almost always order the red oil wontons. red oil wontons are one of my weaknesses. if i see them on the menu, i have to order them. i find the rendition at ox9 to be a bit sweeter, a bit less sour, and less numbing than my favorite versions, but still very satisfying and tasty in it's own right. read more
