We've been waiting all our lives to finally try the famous "Garrett Popcorn"! The smell was tantalizing and brought us in immediately, the line was long but totally understandable as this is ranked #4 on the Most Famous Chicago's Treats, and the prices were fair. Unfortunately, with out mouths watering and our stomachs growling.. I was let down. We ordered the caramel almond corn and it tasted like it had been cooked too long. Nothing is worse than burnt popcorn! The almonds were a little hard because of that, too. Makes me really sad because I really wanted to bring a bag home for my Momma; however, I don't think I could be the one to let her down either. I had the cheese popcorn and I loved it! I've never had their popcorn before or even heard about them. Since I was visiting, I only got a bag to take with me onto the plane. A bouncer at a bar I went to a few days ago wouldn't let me bring my popcorn into the bar because he told me that "Garrett's is a commodity" here in Chicago, and so he guarded my popcorn for a few hours by the door so that "drunk people wouldn't steal it." So if that doesn't say something about how big Garrett's is in Chicago, I'm not sure what does. I had a small bag of the spicy cheese corn (limited edition flavor) and the buttery flavor. I believe it was no more than $3 for the bag. The spicy cheese corn is what I came for! The cheddar is salty and savory and the kick of spice definitely hits you a few seconds after you start eating it. The buttery flavor was soft and very salty. I only wish I opted to try a caramel corn flavor now to balance out the salty flavors I chose. The popcorn is so fresh and there was a line outside of the door to get in. I love popcorn, especially caramel corn. Even after chipping a tooth on some popcorn last year, that wasn't enough of a deterrent to keep me away from popcorn forever. So when a former Chicago native told me I have got to try Garrett's popcorn, I went racing for it after dinner one night. I was craving something sweet, and caramel corn sounded like the perfect way to satiate my sweet tooth. It was rather late, and the showcase of popcorn was pretty paltry at this point. I asked if that was all they had left and she said yep that's it. I didn't mind so much that the selection was low as long as they had some caramel corn, which they did. Other varieties included almond caramel crisp, pecan caramel crisp, macadamia caramel crisp, plain, butter, and a mix of caramel with cheesecorn to get your fix of sweet and salty. I've had that mix before locally from a brand I like but I just pick out all the caramel corn which ticks off the rest of my family. Haha. I ordered a medium bag which was $7 and change. It was a decent amount of popcorn for two. It was still a little pricey in my opinion but hey, gourmet popcorn, gourmet prices. And if it was as good as I was expecting it to be then well worth it. So we took it back to the hotel and got a drink at the bar, and dove in. I was so disappointed. I thought this was going to be mind blowing popcorn, but it was just okay. It wasn't super fresh, and maybe it's like gong to the donut shop after six pm. You aren't getting the freshest dough at that point. Regardless I was expecting better in both freshness and taste. The following morning, I asked my bf to take the rest of the bag and give it to his manager who was the one who raved about the popcorn. That's saying something because I don't typically part with my popcorn. Bummed ...disappointed, especially since I saw you can order online and have it delivered. Was in Chicago and had read about the great reviews for this place and wanted to check it out before we left! Had the nicest sales people at the Michigan ave location early Sunday afternoon. Gave us a sample of the spicy cheddar and told us about their 2 for 1 deal and couldn't pass it up. Got the cheddar and caramel and both are yummy! The store is small and offers no in store seating. They accommodate 7 customers at a time in store only. They have an assembly line type process. The longest wait was to enter the store. Today Monday, January 13, 2020 was the beginning of Garrett Popcorn Shops Celebration of National Popcorn Day with a week-long opportunity for everyone to purchase a small bag of popcorn for $1.00. (Came to $1.11 with tax) each day from 11am-1pm. I arrived a little after noon and the line was moving along but as the word got out--it became longer and longer! EVERYONE WAS ELATED ABOUT THE POPCORN CELEBRATION! The line moved along rapidly and once inside they were giving out small cups of free samples to those who were waiting to order. I chose the Cheese Popcorn Flavor. The bag size was their regular sized small which is VERY GENEROUS for $1.00. Thank you Garrett Popcorn for giving back to the community in so many ways from offering discounts to veterans, to giving away free popcorn this past summer in Pioneer Square to celebrate your anniversary. Fresh, yummy popcorn!! I'm not the biggest popcorn eater, but man..the popcorn they sell is just so delicious. ! When I visited this store during my trip, I ended up buying a lot to take home to my family so they can taste how good the popcorn is too! The line isn't too bad as it moves fairly fast. The first time I walked near Garrett's, I caught the aroma. The whiff and the whole street smelled SO good, I KNEW the popcorn had to be A+. Unfortunately, I was in a hurry to go elsewhere and didn't get to try the popcorn out. The smell was so amazing that I insisted on taking time out of my most recent trip to Chicago to specifically pick up some 'corn. What a long wait of about twenty people! The line almost went out the door! Standing in line isn't that bad because the line moved pretty quickly, and it helps that the smell of the whole shop is h.e.a.v.e.n.l.y. I bought a small sized bag of the mixed cheese and caramel popcorn for ~$5.50. The small is enough for two people to share as a snack. I was actually in a rush to go on a boat tour, so I went to the boat right after picking up the popcorn. Let me tell you... a boat tour is no fun unless you have a good snack like I did. The cheese popcorn was covered in a very aromatic, savory, cheese powder. It wasn't dry at all because the popcorn was fresh, so the cheese powder mixed with the popcorn in such a way that the texture became soft. So remember to get some napkins! The caramel popcorn was glazed in a buttery caramel and crunchy to the touch. Both cheese and caramel popcorn are excellent choices individually and they do pair well together if you want to try that. Honestly, I'd rather buy this stuff at the movie theaters instead of the regular popcorn. read more

Average at best. I'd go so far as to say some of mine tasted stale and my friends said the Carmel pecan was too burnt for them. My hotel was located next door, so I kept walking by with the sweet smell being pumped out onto the streets. They know what they are doing. It's been years, but I knew it was inevitable that I was going to stop and grab a bag. There's rope outside to handle the crowds, but there's no way I am standing in line. One night, walking back from dinner, I saw only a few inside and opened the doors to that sweet & savory smell. It was near closing time and there was very little selection left. I ordered the Family size Tin to be delivered to my Son. $64 not including tax. I am totally OK with the very healthy profit margin, as long as I receive a quality product. It was delivered within the stated time frame. The taste was good, however, in the name of value for the customer, they replied to my dissatisfaction by saying, ( "Filling the tins as full as possible ensures you receive the maximum amount of Popcorn possible, but may mean some crumbs are included in your tin", ). Unfortunately, "Some" is a subjective term. Some, in this case was 1/4 of my tin. In other words, they explained it away. To bad for you. I always compliment when I can and did in this review but on the other hand, the business needs to be held accountable and at least make a weak attempt to work with the customer to a resolution. We were delayed for two days in Chicago due to Texas Snowmageddon in January 2023. #neverforget. Anyway, we had some basic layers and chose to take in the City while we waited for Texas to melt. Garrett popcorn was on our check off list. Glad we got a photo in front of it as it is iconic. It was busy on a weekday afternoon in January. Can't imagine how it would be any other time. It was a 15 minute walk from our hotel. The neighborhood was a bit sketch. Reminded me of Queens in NY. But we were staying in a five star hotel so maybe my standards changed that fast. The Chicago mix or Garrett's mix as it's now known was always my favorite, but the Pecan Carmel Crip i think has taken over. The seasonal Hot Cocoa is also a Christmas favorite. We spotted this place across from our hotel, and heard recommendations of their popcorn. We were already craving something sweet so my honey dragged me in to try them out. They are located across from the Fairfield Inn Downtown. Once you walk in, they have a sample counter. The samples were regular popcorn but I could certainly tell the regular popcorn was much better than your normal movie theater style. It was slightly sweet and salty. It also tasted fresh. So, we opted for the caramel, since my honey has a looooooong history of eating all the caramel when we get bags of G.H. Cretors cheese and caramel popcorn. We had high expectations of the taste. I need to point out that we stopped by there very late Monday evening (before closing) and they didn't have a lot of popcorn left. So we got bottom of the barrel. With that said, I was very much let down. It wasn't fresh or warm, and tasted like the bagged stuff we get at Costco, which is still very good. However, for $7 of a medium bag, this seemed wasteful. I would certainly not come back before closing. I guess I'd need to taste it fresh, but what we got was nothing more than a high priced version of H.G. Cretors. read more

This Garrett popcorn shop was one block away from our hotel. Every time we walked by, there was a long line out the door. This time, the line was just to the door and we decided to pop in and see what all the fuss was about. The little shop is pretty cramped, and we were in line for about 5 to 10 minutes. There are a few popcorn options, and they all look pretty delicious. We chose the Garrett mix, which is caramel corn and cheese popcorn mixed together (supposedly the Chicago thing). We bought a large size bag and it was about $8. The popcorn wasn't mixed very well, with the caramel corn on the bottom and the cheese popcorn on top. It was very difficult to mix inside the bag, so we needed to constantly reach down to the bottom to try to mix it together; not very impressive. The popcorn was tasty, but I'm not sure I completely buy into the hype. I feel like I've had better popcorn in other places. read more

If you hear about Chicago you hear about Garret Popcorn. It seems to be a hometown staple. Let me tell you I can see why. You can smell the popcorn before you even enter the establishment. If you don't see the signage your nose will lead you straight there. You are greeted "Welcome to Garret" when you come in the door. There wasn't much of a line so I was able to place my order quickly. The day I visited they were holding a promotion of two petite tins for the price of one. I wasn't able to pass it up. I now had two souvenir tins to take back to Pittsburgh. I ordered the Garret mix which is cheddar cheese and caramel popcorn. My second tin I ordered was just cheese. Both were so delicious. I immediately torn into the mix. The cheese was so cheesy and the caramel was just the right amount of sweet. Be sure to pop both in your mouth to experience the mixture of flavors. What hits you as you approach Garrett's is the intoxicating aromas. If I could buy a candle that was scented like Garretts that would be a dream come true. The first time I visited, I bought a small bag of CheeseCorn. It was amazing, even though my fingers were completely dyed yellow. After eating the entire bag and feeling sick afterward, I realized this is probably why everyone orders the Garrett Mix. Trying the Garrett's Mix was a game changer. The bagged versions do not do the Chicago style mix justice. You can't beat having it freshly made. If I had to order again, I would ask for more Cheesecorn than CaramelCrisp. Although the CaramelCrisp is amazing, it's hard to eat more than a cup in one sitting, but I understand now why they have caramel corn with different nut varieties.
