I've been to several Jeni's locations, but this one near River North is definitely my favorite! The location is absolutely adorable, with beautiful glass windows and a little pocket-park feel that gives major NYC vibes. It's also close to the lake, making it such a beautiful spot to stop by. I'm honestly not even a huge ice cream person, but Jeni's is on another level. My go-to flavor is the Brown Butter Almond Brittle, and the little pieces of almond make it so delicious! I also love the Cold Brew with Coconut Cream and the Gooey Butter Cake. I always get the combo because the freshly made waffle cone smells incredible the moment you walk in. I've been to the Fulton Market and Old Town locations, but this one is definitely my favorite. 100% recommend! read more

The seasonal Watermelon Taffy immediately caught our attention, and the employee suggested pairing it with the Summer Passionfruit flavor. What a fantastic recommendation, and she was very kind and patient! Both flavors were bright, refreshing, and surprisingly light. The Watermelon Taffy tasted like summer in frozen form, with sweet watermelon flavor and a nostalgic candy-like finish that was quite tart in a good way. The Summer Passionfruit beautifully meshed with the tartness of the watermelon taffy and added sweetness that followed through the bite. The ice cream itself was incredibly creamy and smooth without feeling heavy. Each bite melted slowly and left behind lingering fruit flavors! It was refreshing, flavorful, and exactly what we needed after a busy day of sightseeing! I also absolutely loved the adorable upstairs seating area. Great ice cream! I've had jeni's from the frozen section at the grocery store, so it was nice to try out an actual store location! We went on a Friday night and it was pretty nice out, so there was a WAIT. We waited for at least 30 minutes. There was a ton of people, but I wanted to try Jeni's not from the frozen section, so we waited. Once we got inside, I understood the wait. The staff is incredibly kind and helpful- and they let you sample as much as you want. I must have tried 4 different flavors. It was so hard to pick what I wanted. I ended up getting the banana pudding and the berry passion fruit ice cream- they paired together very nicely. Both were so flavorful, but I do think you need something to balance the berry ice cream (it's quite tart). They also make their waffle cones fresh behind the counter (in case you couldn't already smell the sweet waffle cones!). They give you a little chip of the cone which was nice. I ordered the standard (two scoops) with birthday cake and the darkest chocolate. The birthday cake was superrrrr sweet but still great. I liked the darkest chocolate the most. I was surprised there were no mix in options, besides hot fudge sauce. I only give it four stars for the price. I know Chicago is expensive in general, but 8 dollars for two scoops (like, two small scoops...) is pretty crazy. It does come with a small waffle bite, so thats a plus. This place kinda gave salt + straw vibes--there were 3 flavours that were seasonal and others seemed to be more permanent. They also let you try a bunch of different flavours and they come in cute little metal spoons. The guy serving us was very patient and let us try a lot of different flavours. I liked the gooey butter cake and the seasonal bubble gum flavour. The butter cake one had cake chunks that were fun and the ice cream was sweet and rich from the butter flavour but it wasn't overly decadent or artificial tasting. With this specific location, I think I have something though... don't worry, it's positive. What Jeni's does very well is quality, service, and selection. This is a case where I say, "The quality is high, and the price is higher." I can't tell you if I am imagining, or it's the person doing the scooping, local management, or a company wide change... but the Signature I ordered here seemed to be a larger potion than those I'd had at other Jeni's Scoop Shops. However, the bubblegum tasted nothing like bubblegum (it tasted more like rose and coincidentally the cake better tasted more like bubblegum) and the root beer was so lightly sweetened it bordered on bitter. None of the flavors really had too much punch to them at all-- seemed subdued. Loved the Darkest Chocolate - it was super chocolate-y and bittersweet, which was a perfect dessert after the giant dinner we'd just consumed. I'd definitely get this again. The Brambleberry Crisp wasn't bad, but it didn't knock my socks off. It was a bit too sweet by the end of the scoop. Many of their other flavors also sounded super sweet to me (e.g. all the candy and cake-inspired flavors). The two stars are for the ice cream itself. The girl who scooped my order today had the most long disgusting looking nails I have ever seen someone in food service have. I understand that you may prefer long nails but when you're working in food service especially when scooping ice cream this is just unsanitary without gloves on. I loooovvee all of Jeni's unique flavors you can't find anywhere else. My favorite so far has been salted peanut butter with chocolate flecks. They rotate every few weeks which flavors are pints only, so don't be discouraged if you can't try a certain flavor in a bowl/cone because if you go back again in a few weeks it will most likely be available. There is normally a line out the door, but the service is great! They keep the line moving quickly. I have never waited for more than 10ish minutes. read more
