I ate there for the first time last Wednesday and we arrived around 5pm. It was pouring and so my girl (love her) and I ran through the rain to the front door. We had no umbrella so I held a spare shirt over her head so I was soaked. Upon entering we were warmly welcomed and a tall friendly Irishman saw my situation and offered to give me a shirt to wear !! I politely declined and we sat in the front room which was really restored to its original beauty. For appetizers we had short rib sliders which were amazing and delicious stuffed mushrooms. The Irishman returned and we found out it was the owner Garvan. He spent about 15 minutes telling us about the place and where in Ireland he came from - very friendly and welcoming! We had lobster ravioli (delicious) and pasta with grilled chicken, mushrooms and sauce. It was excellent. I eat out a lot when I travel for work at very high end restaurants. The food, environment and ambiance here are top shelf. My new favorite place to eat in the Hudson valley ! read more

For special occasions, there should be a 6-star rating, because that's what Garvan and his lovely wife deserve for this phenomenal place. We had the short ribs and the steak, best I have ever had incl. in NYC and overseas. I have told everyone I know about this place, and every time I think of our meal, I salivate almost to the point of drowning. AND, they are the nicest, most welcoming hosts I have ever met. Such a beautiful spot in New Paltz! We ate lunch outside amongst the trees which will be a permanent option here when the weather is right. Garvan sat with us when we were unsure of where to visit next in the area. Irish hospitality at its best! The food is hands down some of the best we've ever had and probably the best in the area. Very reasonably priced. I would say this is a must do and definitely would need reservations for dinner. In the evening it will be gorgeous out here outside under the lights! read more

Excellent service at this quaint old tavern which the staff says is in a home that is at least 200 years old (sorry, wasn't exactly paying attention on the date). Guinness is served in the proper way and the menu breaks the barrier between pub food and continental cuisine. Had the duck breast special with puréed sweet potato and asparagus. Awesome! read more

Amazing place! Very attentive service along with a great food! We were met by the owner who was nice enough to personally take us to our table. The restaurant is located in a 258 years old house, the decor inside is lovely and makes the place look very cozy. The food and drinks were also very good. We ordered bangers and mash, fish and chips and a house salad. My husband had tap Guinness and I enjoyed The Pimm's cup drink, which became my favorite summer drink after this visit. We found this restaurant on a Saturday night through the yelp app. We had been hiking in the area and are from CT so we didn't know what to expect. They were completely booked but gave us a seat at the bar and assured us we could order from the regular menu. The space was bueatiful, cozy and welcoming. Great experience at Garvan's that began immediately with the host serenading our daughter with an old Irish folk song when he learned her name is Mollie. The hospitality of this establishment is impeccable! The meal was also excellent, with an attentive waiter and solid service. We enjoyed two salads to start- the large house salad with Gorgonzola and walnuts that was well dressed and indeed as delicious as other reviewers have indicated & the beet salad, a small but attractive assembly of beets and greens. The lamb stew was rich and hearty, precisely what one would expect from an Irish based restaurant. The salmon was cooked properly and served with a delicious yet simple risotto and fresh green beans. The only fault in the meal was the eggplant rollitini, a choice for the vegetarian at our table, that perhaps should not be on this menu. The desserts were delicious- an Irish tart with cream that was a special that evening and a raspberry lemon pound cake. We'll be back! read more

The food and atmosphere here were amazing. One of the best meals we've had in a long time. We were greeted right away by the owner who was very personable and nice. He took time to speak with us again on our way out and ask us how our meal was. Our server was very helpful and patient as we were feeling indecisive and took a while to order. She offered a lot of suggestions and made sure we knew she was available without being overbearing. My wife is pregnant and the staff was very willing to accommodate her dietary needs. We started out with the bacon wrapped scallops appetizer which was the special of the night. It was simple but delicious and the scallops were cooked perfectly. For dinner, we shared two entrees - Garvan's Gorgonzola burger with truffle fries and the Seafood Trio. The burger had to be well done due to my wife being pregnant and yet it still had a ton of flavor. I am a big fan of truffle fries and these were by far the best I've ever had. The seafood on the trio (salmon over Asiago risotto, more scallops with spinach and a butter sauce, and a crab cake with a red pepper sauce) were each unique and delicious. My wife isn't a big fan of salmon but said this was the best she'd ever had and would eat salmon more if it tasted like that! Overall, just a great experience, portions were a good size, and it was worth every penny. Definitely a place we will come back to next time we are down this way. read more

Great new restaurant. I was there on opening day the food and service was fantastic. Prices are a little on the high side but the quality is very good. I would say one of the best places to eat in New Paltz .I've been there one other time since then and it was consistent with the first time. The food was great! That's not why I am giving it three stars. It was the service. We had reservations and were brought to our table quickly but we waited an extremely long time for service for food and drinks. The tables around us got service from a different waiter/waitress and were treated properly. I don't think waiting an hour after our appetizers to get our dinner is reasonable. We even had to wait a long time after our food to get the bill. I had to leave the restaurant and walk around because I couldn't sit anymore waiting. Even when the dinner came it dat for a while when we were done waiting for it to be cleared. We were at the restaurant for 2 and half hours and only got one appetizer and two entrees. Therefore if you have time to spare then go to this restaurant it is really nice and the food was great! read more

We enjoyed an excellent meal at Garvan's recently. We started with a delicious beet salad and then had duck and lamb stew as main courses with an excellent apple pie for dessert. The tap beer selection was excellent but the choices for wine by the glass were only ok and not very extensive. Our service was fine once we were attended to as we had to wait too long to order. Went here for a date night and had a great time! Their food was super tasty, especially their upside down apple pie :O yum. A little pricey, but worth it if you want to treat yourself. The owner greeted us at the door like we were his old friends. Actually, it seemed like most of the patrons were his old friends. My fiance and I joked that it felt like we were crashing someone's party where we didn't know anyone. Definitely a really homey, warm environment, but also a little loud (like, I couldn't hear you a half a foot away from me loud) so I'm not sure I'd choose this as the most romantic date spot. Out of the way of the normal college life hustle and bustle that has come to define the town of New Paltz, Garvan's in just to the north, down a short winding road. The gastropub is situated in a small cottage on a golf course. It's a place more likely to find the professors than the students. The staff and the service here were great, as was the food. I opted for the seared scallops as an appetizer, which was cooked perfectly. Delicious flavors and the perfect texture. The lobster ravioli I had ordered as my entree was equally enjoyable, not skimping on the lobster stuffed inside, nor on top of the dish itself. The menu has a lot of great choices and I hope to try something new when I return. read more

We went for a staff lunch and had a great time. The restaurant is lovely. We were in a dining room upstairs. Mike our server was so accommodating and kept up with the requests of our large group with no problem. Had the chicken and Brie sandwich with fries. Fresh and delicious! After a great day of hiking at Lake Minnewoska we stumbled upon Garvan's. Met by Garvan himself as we walked in to a welcoming smile and Irish Brogue. We knew instantly this was going to one of our new haunts! Warm, welcoming, a true gem and a little slice of Ireland in the Hudson Valley. From the pint of Guinness poured with perfection from the tap flown in direct from Ireland from Guinness themselves to the sound of Irish melodies playing in the background to the Guinness Lamb stew, superb! Was greeted by the owner at the door- with his authentic Irish accent!! Wonderful food, great cocktails, and a truly relaxing atmosphere. Must haves- Strawberry Delight, Guinness Chocolate Cake, Short Rib Sliders, Clam Chowder, and Seared Scallops! The only thing they could work on is service. I think they need a little concentrated training. But our waitress was extremely sweet and knowledgeable- but just in my opinion, to meet the caliber of the food, service needs some fine tuning. I have dined at Garvan's four times and it is by far my favorite restaurant in the New Paltz area. The scallops with Parmesan risotto are always perfectly done. The braised beef short rib is better than Grandma's (and Grandma was a damn good chef). The Caesar salad is lightly dressed as it should be. Oh, the atmosphere is so warm and welcoming with roaring fireplaces and different rooms for dining and relaxing in the bar that I am inclined to spend the day. The staff is wonderful on every visit. If you find yourself in New Paltz, you have to check it out. It's not on Main Street but maybe a mile drive away. read more
