Garvan's was the highlight of our trip to Mohonk. Garvan himself greeted us at the door, and instantly made us feel welcome. He was friendly, but not overbearing, telling us how his wife makes the desserts herself by hand. The food was excellent. We had Sheppard's pie, and the short rib. Both were hearty and made you feel like home. The deserts may be the best I have had at a restaurant in a long time. I wish it was closer to us, we would for sure be regulars. read more

Came to Garvan's with a group of friends, some of whom had been here before. Wifey had been here when it was another restaurant, but this was my first time. Very cool atmosphere and the owner was there as the host. Super friendly guy, so we started off on the right foot. We had reservations, so we were seated immediately. Our waitress was over quickly to ask about drinks once we all arrived. Choosing what to order was actually really difficult as there were 5-6 items I really wanted to try. Wifey and decided on sandwiches that we'd split. Wifey ordered the Grilled Cheese (Brie, fig jam, arugula, and sliced granny smith apples on sourdough Texas toast) and I ordered the Corned beef Reuben (corned beef, sauerkraut, thousand island dressing and swiss cheese on marbled rye) and a bowl of clam chowder to start. For drinks Wifey ordered the Wren (I don't remember what was in it) and I had a Nekomata (Basil Hayden Bourbon, Ghost Pepper infused honey, lemon bitters, muddled lemon). Drinks were both very tasty (I needed a second). I'm pretty snobby when it comes to clam chowder, but I have no regrets...full of clams, perfectly cooked potatoes, and an amazing creamy and perfectly seasoned soup. Sandwiches were also great...one of the best Reuben's I've had - thick sliced and juicy corned beef with just the right amount of cheese, sauerkraut, and Russsian dressing. For dessert Wifey and I split the Guinness chocolate cake (Rich Chocolate Cake infused with Guinness, Topped with Whipped Cream Cheese Icing) and each had a coffee. Coffee came in a French press (ooooh, fancy) and both of us wished we had more because it was so good. And come on, how can you go wrong in an Irish place with Guinness chocolate cake?!? Beautiful surrounding grounds and the restaurant is in a quaint converted big old house. The house holds many rooms at all three levels and if your party is lucky you'll get a private room. Feels like you're at home. Easy parking. Staff and service excellent. On to the food and drinks: Beer: excellent - tried 3-4 and all fresh and perfect. 6points and Guinness our fav. Drinks: sadly not very good; pear cocktail, bees knees and others just not up to par. Berry mocktail was okay, to bland and no pop, needs improvement. House soda bread and butter: great ! Appetizer: tuna was okay but not seared all around as should be; salads good; stuffed mushroom very good. Main: dry aged steak good; angus burger excellent!; fries don't seem homemade and we were not fans; Scallops delicious Dessert: affogato average at best; Guinness chocolate cake good but lacking Guinness flavors. Coffee and tea: excellent! Great French press coffee served and hot tea properly served! Nice to see! A cool change from the typical restaurants. Authentic Irish food. Price point high but worth the splurge. 4 stars for food but due to great service, uniqueness and atmosphere it push's it to a 5. Nice to take a walk on the grounds after dinner. We came here to celebrate my birthday with my two kids and the partners. When I made the reservation they asked if this was for an occasion and I made the mistake(I'll explain later) if saying it was my birthday it was to celebrate my birthday. I have been coming here for years and Garvan himself greeted us so warmly and shook all of our hands. And wished me a happy birthday. Every member of his staff were all very warm and friendly. Megan was our server and took great care of us. My daughter, who is vegan, was excited to see that they now have a completely vegetarian menu with several choices for her. They were very accommodating to my wife's garlic allergy and the chef made a special preparation of the sauce without the garlic. I had the ribeye and it was cooked perfectly. I am not a fan of sauces on my steak but the one served with this (which contained some Jack Daniels was subtle and delicious. No one had a complaint about the food. The biggest complaint was from the women who ordered pasta dishes and couldn't finish. The drinks were excellent and the desserts also. And when they came to serve all the servers (about six or seven ) showed up and sang happy birthday with a candle stuck in my crème brûlée and much to my wife's delight had me turn several shades of red. I have never had a bad or mediocre experience here. I look forward to next year and I'm coming here to have my 70th birthday here!! Thanks Garvan, you guys all give us a great time. read more

I had some trepidation when this was picked for a staff party, as I didn't care for items had at a different restaurant with the cook, but worries disappeared. The food was super, the room was lovely, the mocktail was tasty, and the service was out of this world. (I had ordered a separate takeout meal for hubs but later discovered it was not the vegetarian version, and they went above and WAY beyond to replace it!) Everything was amazing! The staff is so friendly and welcoming, and we were even greeted by Garvan himself! The restaurant is in a French Hugenot building from the 18th century. It was fun to look at the eclectic decor as we ate. Our server Aiden was attentive, courteous and efficient. Our lunches were perfectly prepared and we ate every bite. We had the grilled cheese with fig jam and Irish stew. The sandwich was a delicious blend of creamy and sweet. The lamb in the stew melted in you mouth and tasted homemade. The truffle fries were out of this world- crisp, fresh and with a generous sprinkling of parmesan. For dessert we had the house specialty, Banofee Pie, a luscious shortbread crust topped with toffee, bananas and fresh whipped cream. Save room for this dessert! We never got to eat. We were enjoying a wonderful weekend away for our anniversary, and being major Yelpers, we looked up a good place to have lunch on our way home. We got there around 1:30 or so and the hostess asked if we had reservations. We did not. She said to wait a moment and her manager would come seat us. She came back and said; "we don't have room for you today". Ok, but a bit harsh. Maybe offer something after a wait? There wasn't anyone waiting. Maybe another time? Visited Garvan's on a Sunday afternoon my husband and I were in town we came from Brooklyn NY. The host gives us a warm welcome and found a table for us. While we were waiting for the table to be ready we decided to have a drink at the bar and Ronel the bartender greeted us with a big smile and took out drinks orders and made me one of the best espresso martini on the rocks . We decided to stay at the bar and ordered food. Since it was our first time there Ronel went out of his way to give us a tour and explained the history of the facility to us .Overall we had a great time the food and drinks were delicious and freshly made . I just love this place. Been here about three times now and never had anything I didn't like. The restaurant is a very quaint and cozy colonial home, Where you can sit on the porch to eat. The service is excellent, all the waiters know the specials. They bring the food out in a correct manner and when it should be brought out. The food is excellent. I've had a lot of dishes from the flatbread to the steak to the burger and to the crème brûlée. All were excellent dishes. I can't say enough good things about this place. This was not actually my first choice place to eat dinner, but I decided to give it a try after seeing the braised short rib and seeing that they had many vegetarian options that my coworker could enjoy. The restaurant is in an old house surrounded by beautiful land. It's quaint, and has a lot of what looks like the original or old features with antique paintings. The only concern I had was when we left because it was late and the pathway to the parking lot was quite dark. We ate on an enclosed porch and got to enjoy the nature sounds. We had a great waitress named Katrina who helped us pick some great items from the menu. There were a few options on the menu that had me (shrimp and butternut squash ravioli and the Guinness lamb stew), but I ended up going with braised short ribs which included mashed potatoes and asparagus, and it was absolutely delicious. The meat was soft and juicy, nicely seasoned. The mashed potatoes were buttery and I had to just add a little bit of salt. The asparagus was also just right. They served our meal with homemade bread that was also quite delicious, and I ordered an apple pie at the end that was covered in caramelized walnuts. I skipped the ice cream on this one, and I'm glad because the apple pie was very good. The right amount of sweet and tart, and you can tell it was freshly made. My coworker ordered the Shepherdess Pie and a homemade pie by the owner's wife. Which he also said was absolutely delicious. Celebrating our wedding anniversary, we went to this intimate, tucked away Irish Gastropub. Christopher was our server and he couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful. We had the specials; bangers and mash and the shepards pie. The only change I'd make is including some peas with the bangers and mash but both dishes were delicious! This was our second time here, and the food was as good as the first time. We started with stuffed mushrooms and crab cake appetizers. We've had the stuffed mushrooms before, and they were as good as we remembered. The crab cake was a surprise - I don't usually like crab cakes but this one was excellent! Now I need to be a bit critical of the bread. While I enjoy Irish soda bread, I don't believe an upscale meal is the place for it. I was hoping for crusty bread for dipping in the mushroom cream sauce, but was disappointed with the bread. At least offer an assortment or choice of bread for the future. On to the short ribs - we both ordered them because they were so good the last time. They were still so good! We even have leftovers! Dessert was vanilla creme brulee (excellent) and cappuccino for him, and a good night kiss cocktail for me. It was a bit strong, but it was good. When we made reservations, it was asked if there was an occasion we were celebrating. We noted it was a birthday. No one even asked, or acknowledged the note in the reservation. UNBELIEVABLE experience at Garvan's! Immediately upon entering, we were warmly welcomed by no one other than Garvan himself who shared a pint of perfectly poured Guinness with us! For appetizers, we had the street carrots (amazing recommendation by our waitress, Katie), clam chowder, and Thai chili shrimp. All was enjoyed as it was so tasty. Entrees consisted of the scallops and lamb stew. We were so full of this amazing food, we ordered two of Katie's favorite desserts to-go to enjoy later this evening. Honestly, this is some of the BEST food that we have had in such a long time. I cannot recommend Garvan's enough. We loved the experience and the feeling of a warm, cozy pub. We were looking for a nice restaurant and I found Garvans on the web. It turned out to be the most beautiful, welcoming place that I could have imagined. A little miracle in New Paltz--off of the busy streets, in a lovely wooded area with lights and flowers and nicest owners and staff I have encountered. Haven't been since before the pandemic. Enjoyed the ambiance and many memorable meals in the past. It's a 60 mile drive from our home and memories of our past experiences had us looking forward to another great meal. Outside of the Guinness (perfect pour) and Guinness chocolate cake (a real treat) the meal was a real disappointment. Arugula and apple salad included four tiny apple slices. Why bother? The lamb stew had a few pieces of lamb swamped in sauce with maybe one small potato and a few carrots and celery. This used to be a hearty meal. Far from it this time. The duck dish was ok but nothing special and we have had better. Sad to say this meal was mediocre and we won't be looking to make a return trip. read more

No music blaring, and the 4 of us could actually talk, hear each other and enjoy our conversation! The food was excellent! A pet peeve of all of us is when staff greet the table with "you guys." and another is when a different staff brings the food and does not know who ordered what. That is a simple thing to overcome.
