We relocated to Moreno Valley so our daughter could attend Garvey Allen STEAM Academy because of its performing arts focus. She is a 5th-grade student, Co-Captain of the GEMS cheer team, and was preparing to join the dance program. Over several months, our child experienced multiple safety and medical incidents on campus. These included being denied timely restroom access, an injury on the playground without staff intervention or parent notification, and a hand injury during PE where medical assistance was not provided when requested. Due to the school's no-phone policy, we were not informed of these incidents until after school. When we raised concerns, administration acknowledged staffing and supervision challenges and stated an investigation would occur. As of now, we have not received follow-up or resolution. Student safety, communication, and supervision are essential. Based on our experience, these areas require significant improvement. read more

An Honest Parent Review: Why Garvey/Allen STEAM Academy Has My Heart The best way I can show my gratitude is by letting the world know just how much Garvey/Allen STEAM Academy means to me and my family. My daughter just completed her first year at Garvey/Allen, finishing the fifth grade--and yesterday, we celebrated that milestone at her graduation ceremony. The event was beautiful, but I don't want to focus on just the events and celebrations (although the school does those incredibly well). Culturally, we often highlight those outward wins--but what truly deserves the spotlight is the growth that happened behind the scenes, in the classroom and in her heart. My daughter is a COVID baby. She missed half of kindergarten, spent all of first grade on Zoom, and was thrown into a second-grade classroom that felt like it was racing to "catch up"--not realizing how far behind many of our children were due to the pandemic. As a result, she struggled, and despite our best efforts, she was falling through the cracks. We tried a private Christian school next, hoping that paying for a smaller class size would help. I even hired a tutor. But the results were underwhelming--no progress reports, no measurable growth, and definitely no transformation. Tuition was around $600/month, plus $120 for tutoring and about $150 monthly just to feed her lunch. And still, my child was struggling. Then came Garvey/Allen. At your school, lunch is provided. Breakfast is available. Nutrition is not an afterthought, and neither are the children. More importantly, this year, my daughter has thrived. She began the year with significant academic gaps--and yet, she finished the year on the honor roll. From receiving "Most Improved" in the first trimester to Honor Roll by the third, the growth has been remarkable. I owe much of that to the individualized care and attention she received from her teacher, Ms. Boyer Allen. She's been phenomenal. I'm so thankful that I followed Ms. Morris's advice to start my daughter in the summer program. That transition into 5th grade was truly pivotal--it gave her the head start she needed to build confidence and skill. From Mrs. Perry to Mrs. Cummings, and especially Mrs. Howard, my daughter is surrounded by strong women who she now lovingly refers to as her "aunties." At Garvey/Allen, she is not only safe--she is loved. She is seen. She is held accountable. This was also her first year taking state testing--and I'm so proud to say that she tested at grade level. In just one year, she made that kind of leap. The support doesn't stop with academics. My daughter is an anxious child by nature, and staff like Mrs. Perry have helped her manage her emotions with compassion and structure. They've taught her to pause, breathe, and think before reacting--skills that I know will serve her far beyond elementary school. She also joined the dance team, and as someone who came from cheer, she was initially stiff. Under Ms. Cummings's guidance, she learned to move with intention--and her praise dance during the Black History Celebration moved me to tears. Garvey/Allen doesn't just educate--they transform. To any parent considering this school: don't just look at the surface. You have to experience it. Step inside. Watch your child grow within its gates. Behind those doors, it's like Wakanda. There's no other way to explain it--the energy, the vibe, the community love is unmatched. From teachers who do a child's hair when they're feeling down, to morning hugs and honest conversations, the staff here show up with love and purpose. But they're not passive. They're firm, direct, and real--preparing our kids for the world beyond. In a school filled with Black and Hispanic youth, there have been no fights, no threats, no chaos. Just intention, structure, and love. So yes--I would pay for this school without hesitation. But I'm even more grateful that I didn't have to. My kid came home from school saying that when the basketball courts were destroyed, they had to play basketball on a wall, the school banned football for most of the year, the staff are sexist and favorite the females mare than the males, when teachers watch the girls hit the boys nothing happens, and dean Evans picks on certain kids for no reason even though they aren't doing anything wrong. I will start off by saying this school could have potential at being a lot better, but they obviously have administration and elitist issues. I was so excited to send my child to a school that he could see himself in. However, the school's staff is very selective in how they treat certain parents and students. It was going to be my child's first experience attending this school, but they showed me way too many red flags. For starters, they did not communicate with us about the next steps in attending the school after my child was accepted. We went to an event that we were invited to and when my child asked for a hot dog, we were asked did my child attend the school. Then this employee stated she would have to prove that he went to the school before giving him a hot dog. Never came back to say anything to us. Next, we were told to attend orientation. Went there and watched while others were acknowledged and got their paperwork while me and my child sat there not being helped. We went to pick up uniforms and was told they were not there. I had already paid for them. The lady stated I would get them and that she put something in the system. Prior to this I called and left a email and voice message with no response. Later, I called to find out my child's class information again because we never got his teacher's name or start time for the first day. When my husband called the school, he was told that my child was no longer enrolled in the school. It makes me feel some kind of way and it was very disappointing to say the least. You try to patronize Black businesses, but they have a tendency to treat their own unkind due being very clicky. So, it's who you know and not about giving our kids an education or operating in a unified fashion like others do. This situation left my child very disappointed because he was excited about attending this school. Now, I am left having to shop for him again for school and to change many things around. We should have been told that he was disenrolled and why. Our time was waisted, and he could have attended another school weeks ago. read more

I am glad to have my Achiever attend Garvey Allen Visual Performing Arts Academy (GAVPAA). This school is not like the traditional schools in Moreno Valley or neighboring cities. Not really a STEM or Performing arts school. They don't even have a school band. Fed us lines about how they were different from other schools but they're actively worse. Crowded classrooms, numerous behavioural issues with alot of the students and a culture of bullying and mean spirited behavior among the students. We withdrew our son after he was "sent home" several times by the administration, and not allowed to speak to the councilor on staff. There's some decent teachers there but they're very aware of the schools shortcomings and are honestly doing the best they can. Other than that they've had teachers fired for throwing scissors at kids and have the kids learning in an unfinished 24hr fitness and calling it an academy. I wish this school did what it claimed but it's just another charter school money grab by people who tried to expand to much too fast and left the kids behind in the process... read more

This school is amazing and I respect Tiffany Gilmore in her excellence and vision for this school! My child excelled and did a complete 360 degree turn in his academics within the first trimester of being at this school. He is now being seen and heard and experiencing one on one teaching and learning experience. His academic levels have increased significantly! I love the classrooms how they are decorated like a high tech stem academy! I've heard that Ms. Gilmore had to get rid of a few bad apples in the form of teachers and I respect that. I've never felt more welcomed, everyone is so professional and informative. the fact that my daughter was denied her education because she forgot her tie is crazy to me..this school is one of the worst schools in moreno valley .. they are to friendly at this school the teachers have the children call them auntie...there is no nurse on site at all..the teachers curse at the kids.. just about every teacher there (which is all women and 2 male teachers) wants to be the children friend then be their educator...in the time of my child attending this school she has learned nothing.... my child is a 7th grader .. the school seems to focus on what's going on in the rap community more than basic education.. they don't offer chrome books to the children but they also don't have books for the children to take home.. they don't offer tutoring if your child is falling behind.. on a scale of 1-10 i give this school a negative 0 .. my child has learned nothing since attending this school. if your considering your child attending this school DONT DO IT .. it will be a waste of your and your child precious time. read more

I am truly blessed having my daughter attending this school for a 2nd year. They have been very transparent before and during the COVID 19 pandemic. They keep me up-to-date on my child's progress as well as my child's attendance during online learning. I love how they notice patterns and personality of child so when something is out of character I get a phone call, text or email. I appreciate this, because my daughter has a set routine for the school week and could literally be staring into space and forget to log on the computer. I placed my daughter at this school due to a suggestion from someone I know. At first it seemed like a good school but the lack of communication and not knowing how my child was ever doing in school, is what made me decide to withdraw her. She started back in February 2020. We all know COVID-19 hit us all around March 13, 2020. The students was released from school and they were supposed to give my daughter her progress report in March when they left. She never received anything. The whole time she was out it was a constant battle with trying to figure out what her grades were and how she was going to continue school from home. No one would contact me for a while. When I finally got a hold of someone, they still had no clue what was going on and she still didn't have her classes. Come to find out, they never created a Google account for her. It was downhill from there. Up until a week and half ago, her last teacher finally decides to add her to his roster and prior to that other teachers were adding her well pass the date of the time all other students has enrichment. I'm not sure if his fault or if someone never communicated information to him. My daughter has not had a fair chance these last few months at this school and I'm highly upset with the whole process. I understand this is a new school and maybe I should have waited until they were well established. I wouldn't recommend this school at this time until they get on track with keeping up with the students as well as the parents. read more
