My boyfriend & I went to Gary Lee's for lunch. He wanted to come back later to get a cheeseburger because it was too much food just for lunch. So he ask Mr. Lee what time does he close, he answered 15 minutes, my boyfriend then asked, do you always close that early, his answer was yes. Total accident, looking for snacks for the kids in case the hippie dinner at Hostel in the Forest didn't suit them, I stumble into this place, five minutes past closing. I realize that it's not a normal rural convenience store when I see that there's both raw and cooked meats within a few feet of each other, and the cooked display has brisket of the dark crusty variety that you only see when there's a masterful cook about. A family run mom and pop butcher shop, you can pick up pulled pork, ribs, sausage, brunswick stew and all of the fix-ins for your dinner or eat your lunch right there at one of there tables. I may be new to the area, but I know good food and this is the real deal. I have tried all the other "famous" BBQ in the Brunswick area: Shane's, Twin Oaks, Sonny's, Southern BBQ on St. Simons and they are all to be praised and worth a visit but Gary Lee's is it. You should have heard of Katz's Deli in NYC unless your head is in the sand- well this is the Katz's deli of the south. Everything is fantastic. The Brisket was outstanding, the ribs excellent, the Burger -fantastic and the 2 porterhouse inch thick (cut to order) steaks were the best I have ever had. Yes, better than the steaks available from Pat LaFrieda Meat Purveyors NYC. Even the slices of cake (many choices) are very good. Don't forget the interesting potato salad and nice Cole slaw. No attitude here or "Coyote Ugly" poser staff like at Southern BBQ, just a wonderful, helpful, knowledgeable family who have honed their craft to an art form. I will be back here - often. We stopped in on a long drive back from Orlando due to weather conditions and cancelled flights. This place has dang good pork and a really unique bbq sauce. I'm assuming family owned and a perfect example of what backyard bbq should really taste like. I might have thought we were in the middle of nowhere when we stopped, but everyone from nowhere was here. The place was packed! As I'm getting ready to write my review, I'm thinking to myself, "What do I not like about this place". OK, I just thought of what I don't like......This place is way down in Georgia, and I'm in North Carolina! My wife was sitting on the beach at Jekyll Island, and while she relaxed on the beach, I left to get lunch. Once I exited the car at Gary Lee's, the wonderful BBQ smell put a big smile on my face, and I knew I was in for something good. I got in line, and told the guy behind the counter that it was my first time, and I wanted a "sample" take-out box. I asked for a half smoked sausage, one rib, some brisket for 2 people and some chopped pork. I also got a side of potato salad, baked beans and cole slaw. I also got a large tea ($1.75), which was very sweet, and tasted great. Let me say that everything we had was very good. I enjoyed it all, but the items that me and my wife agreed were the best, was the brisket, potato salad and beans. The BBQ sauce is also very good. First time my son and I went there they were closed. So I came back another time. Ordered the brisket get the tip if you don't want much fat. Ordered a whole tip 4 lbs. and 30 smoked wings for a Christmas party. First time I had smoked wings usually I eat hot wings loaded with hot sauce. Also got the smoked sausage. Needless to say, at the party everything was delicious and there were no leftovers. I went back again and had the Brunswick stew and wings, no complaints. We were on our way back from Florida when Siri recommended this as a great place to eat. The food here is absolutely fantastic! The people are very friendly and the portions are massive! We're just passing thru but read the Yelp reviews and had to try this place. Oh my goodness!!! The food is incredible. We had to try the Brunswick stew (never had it before); it was loaded with veggies and meat and full of flavor. We added some of the hot sauce that was on the table for an little kick! The ribs were tender and succulent and perfect. Had to try the brisket...oh boy, tender and moist with a perfect pink smoke ring. Got some bread and made a sandwich; melt in your mouth goodness. Loved the BBQ beans full of meat too. While we were there a steady stream of folks came in, mostly for take out. They sell the rub they use (I was told it's used in everything but the potato salad) and I got a large bottle to take home. I doubt my smoked butt or brisket will be as good, but it's something to aim for. read more

Went to Gary Lee's this past Saturday. I had 1/2 lb of Brisket and a sausage. The brisket could be cut with a plastic fork and was delicious! The Sausage was crisp and spiced just right. We have to drive 80 miles round trip to eat here but it is well worth the trip. The Blueberry desert topped everything off. Try it. You won't regret it. read more

I'm not sure how I feel about the warm creamy potato salad as a side. The baked beans were good but not sufficiently different from the flavor profile of the sauce. I stop here every year on my way down I95. Every year for years. I'm from eastern North Carolina, so serious barbecue aficionados will know what I really like, but Gary Lee's makes fantastic barbecue and stew of the local style and I appreciate that. The Brunswick stew is my favorite there - great flavor and texture - and I always have a barbecued pork sandwich too. I find the brisket and chicken a little under seasoned for my taste but beautifully cooked. For what it's worth, which I think is a lot, the locals love Gary Lee's and are mostly who I've seen there.
