On Nextdoor Gary Mann was recommended to me to get an appraisal for my grandmother's ring. The owner gave me a $150 quote for the appraisal and I politely thanked him. He asked if I would like to come in and I politely said no and the asshole hung up on me. I guess he didn't need to be courteous, professional and just a decent human being anymore since he wasn't getting my business. Has he not heard of "shopping around"? He was my first call. In contrast, this is my very different story. In my (experienced) opinion, Gary treated me strangely and was inexplicably careless with my fine, heirloom jewelry. I trusted him to "remodel" a 2.5 carat, vintage, diamond ring. He seemed dismissive of my design suggestions and even turned down my offer to check his progress, to confirm that "we were on the same page". At last, he presented the finished ring to me. I was appalled to see that a visually substantial diamond, was missing! He then had the the nerve to be argumentative and blameless. Though he fixed and finished the ring and I paid him all that he requested, I feared then and know now, that I need to take it elsewhere for a more refined job. Careless. During the many corrective visits I made to his store, he was full of excuses and evasive, never apologetic. Even insinuating that vintage jewelry was a bother. Wish he had stated that from the start. I noticed he was disrespectful to his partner, Norma, when she offered some suggestions that aligned with my own. I felt badly for her as Gary simply shut her down. On one occasion, I tested a theory and brought my husband to the shop. I was not surprised to find that Gary was much more professional with my husband along... Sound familiar ladies? Even more embarrassing, was the failed repair to my vintage, ruby and star sapphire, cluster ring. I dragged it back to him on three successive occasions to simply be sure that the stones were secure within their prongs. After his first attempt, they were still loose. After the second attempt, they were still loose. On the occasion of the third attempt, I paid him for his work and accepted the ring. Surely, such a basic repair was now successful? When I happily wore it to a dinner out, a week later, I was horrified to find that two of the star sapphires fell out and were lost forever! I sent him an angry text explaining what had happened and he sent me a voicemail response asking "what could he do to help?". Well Gary, even a child would know to offer to replace the lost stones and refund my money for the lousy repair that compelled me to visit your store three times. Remarkably, you did not! After searching and searching for interesting antique engagement rings elsewhere, I stopped into Gary Mann on a recommendation from a family member. I was immediately struck by the clean, tasteful jewelry designs that were displayed, as well as a small but excellent vintage/antique/estate case. This was a welcome change from my previous adventures in New York's diamond district. The laid back and NON-aggressive sales approach he and his store partner took was like a breath of fresh air after all the pressure from other jewelers to compromise and buy right away. I brought him a half carat diamond and told Gary that I was interested in having an engagement ring designed and made around the stone. After sending him pictures and talking to him at length about what I wanted, he picked out beautiful, deep blue/violet sapphires to set next to the diamond. When I told him I wanted platinum, he had no issues because he is an experienced platinumsmith. When the ring was finished, in a very timely manner, the result was beyond what I had envisioned. I went in there today to get a ring-sizer band, the woman acted like she didn't want to let me in there because I'm black, when she finally did let me in after hesitating, she stood in the doorway until I told her what I needed and she finally stepped aside and called the jeweler. Despite what I asked for, he suggested that I get it melted down to my finger size, which I didn't want, I asked for the ring-sized band and he charged me $30. I told him that was kinda expensive and he said it was for labor, this job literally takes 2 minutes. He then goes on to ask me what I did for a living as if that had anything to do with him overcharging me for labor, then I left and found a place nearby that did it in TWO MINUTES and charged me TEN DOLLARS. My fiance purchased my engagement ring through Mann Jewelers earlier this year. First, allow me to say that I receive compliments on this ring from strangers off the street almost every day. One of my co-workers told me it was THE nicest ring she had ever seen in her life. I recently recommended Gary to my parents. They went a few weeks ago with some of my mother and grandmother's old jewelry. Both Gary and Norma were sociable, helpful, and honest. They gave my mother a good rate on the jewelry she wanted to sell and were very informative on the best way to alter the rings of my deceased grandparents, so she could have her parents with her at all times. He understood the significance of that jewelry and did an amazing job to exceed her expectations when she finally went back to pick them up last week. On top of that, there was a difference between the cost of alterations and the cost of the sold jewelry, so Gary gave her a choice between cash or store credit (for most jewelers it's almost credit only). She took the credit, but I can tell you that she would go back because of the Manns not because she has the credit. read more

I live locally so I went in this week to get my necklace repaired and the lady ran in the back rather than quoting me. Gary came out and quoted me $35. My fiance and I went to Gary & Norma on a recommendation from a friend. My engagement ring was a family heirloom, previously belonging to my fiance's great grandmother, so we were looking for wedding bands to fit that vintage aesthetic. After looking at just about every ring (Gary and Norma were very patient and polite throughout), we found a section in the store of vintage rings and were very inspired by one of them. We asked Gary if he could create a custom ring for each of us based on the one we saw and he did! He took our measurements and told us an estimate (very reasonable!). He then prepared a wax model so we could see what it would look like and try it on for size (it was ready in a few weeks). Once we gave the OK the rings were then fabricated and ready for pick-up in another couple of weeks. They came out absolutely gorgeous and fit perfectly. We couldn't be happier! The man on the phone seemed like he was in a rush after he heard my voice ( guess I should have used a Valley girl accent or something).
