For weeks, I tried to reach the gastroenterology office with basic but important questions about bowel prep instructions and never received adequate guidance. We were also given conflicting or unclear information about the procedure and preparation. As the procedure approached, we were told we would need to pay a significant upfront amount (around 30%) before care could proceed, even though this is medically necessary follow-up after a cancer screening test. We were not offered clear help navigating financial assistance or patient advocacy, and it felt like the focus was on payment rather than ensuring timely medical care. I also learned through billing discussions that there may have been issues with how the procedure was coded, which could potentially impact insurance coverage. This added even more confusion and stress to an already urgent situation. What was most concerning was the lack of proactive communication and support when we clearly expressed distress and concern. Instead of helping us find solutions, we were met with a cancellation-type response due to inability to pay upfront. When dealing with a possible cancer-related diagnostic situation, patients should not feel ignored, confused, or unsupported. I hope the office improves communication, billing transparency, and patient advocacy moving forward.

Pre-op - empathy and genuine caring are hard to fake. My pre-op nurse was so nice. I've had many IV's started and she gets the prize as the smoothest experience ever. She got me some warm blankets to keep me comfortable. Checked on me often. Nurse Anesthetist was freaking awesome. So nice! Operating Room - every here was very professional and personable. Again Nurse Anesthetist was awesome. Recovery - very smooth experience. They called a day or two later to make sure I was doing OK. Great job and I'll be back!

The staff made the entire process significantly easier to manage. While I was aware of what to expect during recovery, their efforts to ensure my comfort were truly commendable. Dr. Gurtner is an excellent physician, and I appreciate her straightforward approach to my condition. She ensured I was well-informed about the procedure, although, of course, no preparation can fully account for the postoperative period. The staff at SMH East consistently provides healthcare services of the highest quality. I have been a patient at these two hospitals since the 1970s, and the standard of care has remained consistently excellent, regardless of the name change.

As soon as they wheeled me in, I couldn't believe what I was seeing. You couldn't even walk through the hallways because they were completely full of stretchers and beds with patients lying in them. Not the waiting room. The hallways. People were bleeding, passed out, sleeping, and waiting for care. It looked like something straight out of The Walking Dead. I've never seen anything like it. I understand emergency rooms get busy. One of the staff members told me they had just received a large influx of patients within the last 30 minutes. I can understand that. What I can't understand is the quality of care. One staff member came to talk to me, and I asked for a cup of ice. She said, "Okay, I'll be right back." I never saw her again. I sat in that exact same spot for over 30 minutes. It's not like I had been moved and she couldn't find me. She simply never came back. Then it was time to draw my blood and start an IV. Before he even touched me, I told him I have rolling veins and that I'm a difficult stick. I specifically asked him not to fish with the needle. I told him that if he had to fish, I'd rather someone else try. He joked, "I ain't got no bait," trying to be funny. Then he proceeded to do exactly what I asked him not to do. He kept fishing around in my vein with the needle. Usually, if my vein rolls, people stop, remove the needle, and try again or get someone else. He didn't. He just kept digging around. After several minutes, I told him to stop because I didn't want him doing it anymore. He kept saying, "If you don't want me to do something, I won't do it," but by that point, the damage was already done. I grabbed my things, called an Uber, and left. I'm not saying every Ochsner facility is like this because I honestly don't know. I'm talking about the Metairie Emergency Room. Between the overcrowded hallways, the lack of communication, and the way I was treated, this was one of the worst healthcare experiences I've ever had. No one seeking emergency care should have to go through what I experienced.

I stated all my previous issues I was having a was rudely interrupted and almost scolded after listed my symptoms and not being able to give a reason why I was having them. Don't u go to a doctor to find out what's going wrong and not get scolded for it correct? It felt more like going to a police precent and being interrogated by police instead. It didn't help either not being a resident of Louisiana either as the doctors retry much insisted I should see a primary doctor instead which I am obviously but don't u think you should go to digestive specialist for digestion problems ? That's what I went there for their is nothing else wrong so I don't understand a doctor who takes me insurance money can just talk to a patient that way or anyone that way. Maybe he was having a bad day but this was completely unprofessional and give this place a big two thumbs down. I was better off asking for stomach meds and leaving them actually telling about issues. DO NOT GO !!!!
