Mac and cheese with to go box of jerk chicken hushpuppies and mash potatoes
    Gayle A.

Finally checked out Gather after hearing about it from my neighbor and a local social media influencer. They're close to our house and open on Sundays so we got there early to avoid the after church crowd It was amazing! The service was friendly and helpful. The jerk chicken was the best I've ever had. Served with garlic mash potatoes and the jalapenos cheddar hushpuppies that made me do the happy dance in my seat. Just the right balance of sweet and savory with the best crunchy outside I've ever had balanced with the fluffiest middle. Literally the best hush puppy I have ever put in my mouth! My partner ordered the Shrimp PoBoy and he didn't even speak. He inhaled it which I have never seen him do. He also loves the fries. I ordered some Mac n cheese to go and the Chocolate Baileys Rum Cake for us to share later. I will definitely be back to taste everything on their menu including sushi. Have you ever been to a Caribbean restaurant that served sushi! No you haven't. lol. So you need to try Gather. It's in an old house hidden away on MLK Dr in Asheboro. You're welcome!

What a treasure to be found! Our date night Saturday has brought us to this amazing location where we have absolutely fallen in love. The fusion of Jamaican and Japanese cuisine is a brilliant choice and something I've never seen done before. This is quite a lot of food for just two people but we had to try everything that peaked our interests.. and our taste buds! Extremely appreciative of the staff and how welcoming they are, and how they make you feel like you're family. I hope to find myself in Asheboro more often to try more of this amazing food!

    Shrimp & Grits. Yum.

The shrimp & grits were so flavorful, assisted by the big squeeze of lemon. Don't skip on a side of the spicy fries.

This is the best find that is close to my house. It's an old home that's been turned into a wonderful little restaurant. Get in there early or you won't get a parking spot. This place can fill up quick. We got there at 6:00 and only two parking spots left. I had one of the specials for the day which was a pan seared snapper with shrimp and added jalapeño cheddar hush puppies and steamed jasmine rice(Picture below) My friend had the same but for sides he had the garlic mash potatoes and farm veggies(no picture). We also shared a dragon roll before the main meal(no picture). It was a bit of a wait for the main dishes at around an hour because there were two tables ahead of us but it was well worth the wait to have all that flavor pop in my mouth. I'm full and my mouth is still watering thinking about the flavors. Can't wait to go back and try something new. My friend clean his plate it was so good. I took a small portion of mine home that I couldn't finish there.

If you haven't heard yet, Gather & The Bun Hut have merged..and it really is the best of both worlds! A perfect mix of Sushi and Caribbean Food! Everything tasted as amazing as it looked! Not to mention, they are some of the coolest people ever!!! They so generously catered to our big office lunch request on a spur of the moment suggestion from my boss! We hope to make this a "Friday" thing as long as they'll let us!

Love love love this place! It has made Wednesday my favorite day of the week bc they are closed Monday and Tuesday ! I love the flavors , I love the vibe and you can taste the love that was put into each dish! Asian Caribbean fusion is my new favorite ! This is a must !

HIDDEN GEM ALERT! - Gather in Asheboro NC on MLK Blvd. Hubby and I found this little spot in Asheboro NC by checking Yelp for options, and the reviews were awesome so we gave it a try. We definitely recommend it because the food was absolutely amazing! Most people would drive right on by because it's an old house that barely looks like a business never mind a restaurant but don't let that steer you away. Though it doesn't look like much from the outside, (and honestly even the interior could use some touch ups, though they do try to cozy it up with some wall decor), you will not regret overlooking the cosmetic stuff because the food is that good! Don't fall into the trap of ordering with your eyes unless you want to take leftovers home because it's tempting to order more than you could possibly eat, and the portions are large! We shared the Fried Crab Mac & Cheese Balls as an appetizer - drool! They were so good! You get 6 and they're big so if you're foolish like us and eat all 6 between two people, you may not have room for your dinner! Hubby had the Shrimp & Grits and he fancies himself a bit of a connoisseur of the S&G, and he said they were the best he's ever had (albeit a bit on the spicy side). I had a creole stuffed *insert fish type here* (I can't remember, maybe snapper?) with a side of cheddar jalapeño hush puppies and tropical island slaw. Y'all, I can't even explain how good it all was! My only nit was everything was on the same plate so my entree juices soaked into the hush puppies and slaw and they were perfect as they were so I used our appetizer plates to separate everything. As previously mentioned, we couldn't finish our entrees so we took home a lot of leftovers (the shrimp & grits ended up being 3 servings for hubby!). We also took home desserts for later. Yum!! They make everything to order so be patient and you won't be sorry. Our server was lovely and checked in a couple times. We will definitely be back and we highly recommend Gather in Asheboro! I dare you to check out their reviews, we're not the only ones who are raving!

Asheboro was in need!! Worth every penny! Everything is made to order. I'm Our sushi was on point. The miso soup could've been a little hotter but delicious. And the beignets....yum. Will be back very soon!

PEOPLE OF ASHEBORO!!! COME ONE COME ALL!!! It's time to feast and enjoy the new flavor of the year that has came to town!! GATHER on MLK is an absolute win in every dish!!! When we got there and saw the menu we had to make an executive decision. We had to decide if we were going to go full on sushi or get an assortment of different things. We decided to try there sushi roll on special which was the spicy crab. I got the tuna poke bowl with rice and seaweed salad. I much better half got the fried chicken with sweet potato casserole and mac and cheese. Now we only tried one roll but I'm here to tell you. I've had sushi and quite a few different places across America and this is by far one of the best I've ever put in my mouth. The rice was absolutely perfect and if your sushi lover like I am you know how important that is. The crab was so fresh and the flavors were dynamite. All our other dishes followed suit. The fried chicken was cooked to perfection and so flavorful and juicy. The mac and cheese was great and I could have ate a gallon of the sweet potato casserole. I'm really glad I decided to get the tuna bowl. Just like everything else is incredibly fresh. The rice you get is the sushi rice and the seaweed salad is always a favorite of mine and tasted amazing. It was one of those dinners where you just kind of keep staring at each other and nodding your head in total approval. I'm a big fan of the location. I like this new trend that independent restaurant owners are going for with converting houses in neighborhoods into restaurants. It definitely gave you that homey feel with the decor and the way everything was set up. Service was great. Amanda our server gave great suggestions and was super attentive and friendly. Honestly can't do anything but give this place a high five. If you live in Asheboro or you're just passing through and sushi or soul food might be on your mind. There's not another option. I consider gather my new number one spot. Welcome to town!!

Griot platter with sweet and spicy fries and fresh greens.

A true hidden gem. They have such an amazing selection of one of a kind fresh meals. The server was incredible; kind, helpful, quick and attentive, and full of intention fun conversation. I got the griot platter with sweet and spicy fries, fresh greens and nothing disappointed. All the flavors were unique and satisfying. The pride and love for what they do here is evident. I can't wait for my next visit!

You cannot find a better place for a meal, or more kind folks running the place from top to bottom. And if your plate is too big to finish, feel free to take it home, because you'll want to save room for dessert. Magnolia 23 is a staple in our household. So long as we've lived within a 30 minute drive, it has been a great place for a Sunday lunch, or any other meal within the hours they are open. They treat you like family from the very start with the way that they take names for the line. It's natural to start a conversation with the people around you, because everyone has the same end game - a great meal. Once you're seated, it's never long before a waitress comes and takes your drink order. The menu for the day is posted on Facebook and written on the board on the wall, along with the sides and dessert options. There's no menus because it's a meat and two sides, plus a bread of either roll or cornbread. The seating is tables and chairs, although some areas have couches for seating, which is a nice change of pace. Today I got stewed beef with sides of mac and cheese, yams, and bread choice was cornbread. My other half got the country style steak, with sides of cabbage and rice with gravy, and bread of cornbread. The littles shared a fried chicken plate with side of mashed potatoes with gravy. They divided and conquered their food so fast I forgot to snag a picture of it. The stewed beef was perfection. So tender, and the juices went well with the cornbread. The yams were expertly spiced, and prepared with so much love. The mac and cheese was delicious, so I offered some to my youngest who promptly stole the rest of it. I did sample the country style steak, and it was so delicious that none was spared. I cannot wait to eat my leftover stewed beef later this week, as I knew I wanted to save room for dessert. We ordered two fried apple pies, and a slice of Hershey bar cake. Be careful with the fried pies - the filling turns into molten lava when heated, so despite the fact that you'll want to take the largest first bite, please be patient and spare your taste buds from their imminent demise by letting it cool a minute. The spices on the apple filling on the fried pies were perfect, and I savored every bite that I stole from my husband. My dessert was the Hershey bar cake, which I split with one of my littles. It didn't have a thick layer of icing, which was great. The cake had a nice crumb, and was sweet without being overly sweet. If you haven't been here yet, make sure to take note of their hours and then take a trip to Asheboro. Once you've finished your meal, feel free to take a stroll around downtown and know that you've just had the best meal around. Magnolia 23 is worth the price and worth the wait, because you will be blessed by the whole experience.

The ladies who work here are very friendly and helpful, came around a few times to check on me, offered fried side to go with the greens , offered a refill on my sweet tea. Great service! About the food. Probably the BEST FRIED CHICKEN in the area. I really can't judge on that because I haven't sampled other fried chicken in the vicinity but based on my own research of sampling fried chicken all over North Carolina, I feel confident in my assumption. It was fried just right. It was SEASONED. It had a very nice batter that was crunchy and the chicken in the inside was tender and juicy. Every bite was tender and juicy. These ladies should teach a cooking class on how to make fried chicken-to other restaurants. The SWEET POTATOES were perfectly cooked and flavored in butter and cinnamon. You could eat it as a dessert. But not overly sweet. Just right. The GREENS were tender and seasoned perfectly. Greens and fried side with their delicious CORNBREAD could be a meal in itself. The SWEET TEA-perfect! All around, best home cooked food/soul food you can get. I will be back and I highly recommend for true SOUTHERN COMFORT food.

When we arrived, there was a bit of a wait since 4:20 p.m. was just after the staff's lunch break. We reviewed the menu while I explored the lobby area, which was eye-catching, decorated with vintage household items. I was especially moved by the community food station right next to the entrance. The staff appeared highly focused on making sure everyone was well attended to and that orders were prepared correctly. My wife ordered the baked chicken with baked spaghetti and mac and cheese; I ordered the fried chicken with rice and gravy, mac and cheese, and hush puppies. Since I wasn't sure about portion sizes, I also added a house salad. We sat down to wait, and the customers around us looked completely at ease, as if they were at home -- always a good sign. My wife and I chatted in Spanish (our native language), and unlike other places where people sometimes stare at us for speaking it, we felt completely comfortable and relaxed. Then the food arrived. First, the rolls that came with the meal tasted spectacular. It was a shame you only get one per plate -- but oh well, lol. Second, my wife asked me to try the spaghetti, and I agreed. I don't know who is in charge of the kitchen, but the audacity of this person to make a baked spaghetti better than my grandma's... I'm definitely ordering it next time. Third, my meal. The fried chicken was perfectly seasoned, juicy, and delicious. I usually order white meat for the flavor when I get fried chicken, but I didn't even need to -- the selection was perfect. The mac and cheese could easily stand on its own, and the white rice... I'm Puerto Rican, so white rice is a cornerstone of our table. Well, JJ's ruined plain white rice for me, because now I only want to eat it with gravy, LOL. I couldn't finish the salad or the hush puppies there, so later that night, while watching Netflix, I took care of the leftovers. We will definitely be back -- exquisite food, a very comfortable atmosphere, and super reasonable prices!

I really wanted to like Nana Morrison's in Cary because I had heard so much hype about it, but this…read morewas a huge disappointment for me. As an African American woman, soul food is more than just food to me. There's a certain authenticity and flavor I expect when I walk into a soul food restaurant. I ordered several items and after tasting everything, I honestly ended up throwing the entire meal away. I took a bite or spoonful of each item just to give everything a fair chance, and every time I moved on to the next thing, it was another disappointment. The mashed potatoes had a strange aftertaste that I couldn't get past. I don't know if it was the gravy or something else, but something tasted off. The barbecue ribs tasted more boiled than slow cooked and were completely drenched in sauce. The cabbage was overwhelmed with vinegar and lacked seasoning. The mac and cheese tasted more like overcooked noodles with cheese instead of flavorful baked mac and cheese. The cornbread was dry, and even the cake was dry. I will say the restaurant was clean and the employees were friendly, so I have no complaints there. My issue was with the food quality and value for the price. Spending around $80 for a meal like this did not feel worth it at all. Maybe other people love it, but based on my experience, I don't understand the hype. The food just did not taste authentic or well prepared to me. I wish I had stuck with my original plans and just gone to Mikey's Diner in Wilson, North Carolina instead. At least I would have left satisfied. For me, this wasn't worth the drive, wasn't worth the money, and I won't be returning.
