Per my friend, this place has the best biscuits she has ever eaten in her life. I was skeptical before trying them...but no more! Hands down the best biscuits around. The add ons of the various butters and toppings are just the icing on the cake (biscuit?). The restaurant also just has a great vibe and the service was friendly and helpful. We also were always able to ask for recs and got some good ones, especially regarding happy hour prices and items. The shrimp, oysters, fried chicken, mac and cheese and drinks were amazing! It was referred to as the "Black: Pappadeaux's by a lot of our friends. The decor was pleasant. The atmosphere was good, once we got past the hostess. Lunchtime was crowded, so there was a line out the door. Unfortunately, the hostess didn't exude a lot of hospitality when a few people stepped in to get out of the heat. Although it wasn't directed toward us, it was weird to hear the hostess tell some guest to backup and get away from the her area. The waiting are inside is small, but a little understanding in that situation would have been more inviting. Anyway, once we got seated, everything improved. The presentation for some of the entree's seemed to be lacking, but the taste of the entree made up for the basic plating. The custom lemonade was fantastic. What sets the tone in my opinion is the host/hostess unfortunately she didn't set a good one. When we entered into the restaurant she didn't greet us & her body language made it seem like we were bothering her. Small restaurant with an old-time feel. Small dining area with intimate seating, you can hear other people's conversations at the table next to you. Waitress was really charming and she did not over whelm us and let us enjoy each others company. Started with the biscuits which were amazing, butter and the smears were all good. We tried the miso wings which I wasn't a fan of because the flavor had something about it that was different that I didn't like, the sticky texture was nice. I had the 5 wing plate with red beans and rice, The wing was hard to eat, a lot of bone and the meat was tough to get too, I'm not a big wing eater so take that with a grain of salt. I've been wanting to try Gatlin's for a while now and decided to bring some family with us for our first time. This spot feels cozy and gives upscale diner vibes which was perfect. Our server was great and offered menu recommendations knowing it was our first time. The biscuits were hands down the star of the show! Food: ordered the biscuits: 10/10, I used the butter only. Could only eat the top of one but will eat the rest. Very soft but not too crumbly. We ordered 3. My husband doesn't eat them but I know my son would help. He didnt join us today. Gumbo: very full with lots of meat. Had a few crab shells but otherwise good roux, sausage and shrimp. 7/10 Wings with red beans and rice: wings were huge. We came in on a Friday during lunch to celebrate closing on our house. It was a happening place for lunch time, but we were still able to get a table. The menu is full comfort food items, but I had my eye on the fried chicken! For starters, we had raw oysters and the biscuits, which they're famous for. The biscuits were so good, you could taste the love the kitchen put into it. The oysters were also good, but nothing to write home about. First time visiting and we were thoroughly impressed! We arrived on a Friday evening and were seated right away. The restaurant is small but really cute and gives retro diner vibes. It was clean, aesthetically pleasing, and seating included tables, and booths. We ordered a variety of items including the most delicious biscuits ever, they were as soft as a cloud and the butters/jams paired perfectly with them! We also tried redfish & risotto, grilled salmon, fried chicken, and oysters. All were really flavorful! The only complaint is that they did not bring all of the food out at the same time. Dang man, I hate having to write this review but after all of the hype I've given this place and how poorly we were treated tonight I feel like I have to. The vibe was way off tonight at the restaurant before we even ordered. We ordered biscuits to come out before our meal, the biscuits did not come out until more than halfway through our meal and they were burnt (see picture). If these were $6 biscuits I might have just powered through, but these are $15 biscuits and they weren't good. We showed the server and he immediately took them away and showed the manager, who I could see was annoyed...which was disappointing. Long story short, they were supposed to replace the biscuits but apparently we got sent to the back of the line because I saw a lot of them go out over the 20 additional minutes I waited. My wife finally spoke to the manager, who seemed wildly disinterested, and asked if we could get a desert or something instead, but I declined because I just wanted to get the heck out of there. I later found out that they did not remove the biscuits from my check, so I paid $15 for two burnt biscuits. This was my favorite spot ya'll and it was ruined tonight. They can keep the change because they won't be getting any more of my money, The food is a 5 but customer experience is a 2 at best. read more

This is a nice, diner-style black-owned restaurant. I came here on Juneteenth, and my party did a call-in reservation and was told to come in 8pm. There was 20+ party reservation and another large group reservation, which led us to being seated 40 min after said time. I could tell that they were not use to this volume of people, so won't fault them completely on how the reservations were handled. I will say all of the food did come out very promptly and was delicious. I had the blackened fish with shrimp, the green beans, and the mac and cheese. Everything was delicious! I typically don't like restaurant mac and cheese, and this was so flavorful. I can't wait to come back and try more of their fried options since most of the restaurant ordered the fried fish Friday special, which came with a HUGE amount of crispy looking fish. On a quick work trip, I was on the hunt for a "diamond in the rough" dinner spot somewhere close to my airport hotel and serving real local food. That's how I stumbled across Gatlin's. It was about a 20-minute Uber ride, tucked into a residential neighborhood and practically hidden from the main road. The parking lot was surprisingly big, which would be great if you're driving. Inside, the vibe was warm, Southern, and instantly inviting. The playlist was so good I caught myself casually bobbing to every soft tune. I was greeted right away and seated front and center prime viewing for watching every delicious dish parade out of the kitchen. One look at the menu and my mouth was already watering. My server gave a few recommendations, and that was it I closed the menu and ordered everything they suggested. You would've never guessed I was dining alone. No shame in my hungry-hippo game. I ended up with the chef's special oysters, the blackened catfish in a tomato garlic beurre blanc, and sides of red beans and rice with collard greens studded with smoky turkey. Top 3 fried chicken in Houston!!! Probably top 5 all time. I found Gatlin's through an Instagram post, and they had really consistent reviews about their fried chicken. Being from North Carolina, I had to see for myself. Believe it or not the biscuits were the star of the show. They were homemade and heavenly!! The honey butter, bacon jam, and strawberry spread were to die for and paired amazing with the perfectly baked biscuits. The F&F Fried Chicken (white meat) was the best choice I could've made. The chicken was seasoned extremely well, juicy, and the skin had a perfect crunch and crispiness to it. It was sensational. To top it off the Sangria was delicious and I appreciated the frozen peaches as ice for the cocktail. It was well made and refreshing. It has said to be "The Best Chicken in Houston"....my friend and I pulled up on a Saturday with no reservation (I would recommend setting a reservation). While she was very rude and I initially thought to turn around and leave, I asked if To Go was available. The food did take about 30 mins to cook so be mindful of the wait. Gatlins & Fin reminds me of everything southern when biting into the biscuit and jam. You can definitely tell the strawberry jam was freshly made and a perfect addition to the biscuits. First time visiting and the food was 10/10. I heard about this restaurant on TikTok. I made a reservation on OpenTable which I highly recommend. The establishment and the parking lot was very small. No valet parking. I'd suggest carpooling to prevent parking issues. At the front of the restaurant there is plenty of natural light and towards the back there is warm lighting. The decor gave an old diner feel. They had a great R&B playlist which featured Mary J. Blige, The Isley Brothers, and Frankie Beverly and Maze. As soon as we sat down our waiter came and their name was Owen. They were friendly and made great menu suggestions. My friend had a pineapple mimosa and enjoyed it. I had the brunch catfish and fried chicken with one side. I chose the red beans and rice. The fish and chicken were fried to perfection and were flavorful. The red beans and rice were decent. My friend had the brunch blackened catfish with macaroni and cheese. She enjoyed her dish. It was hard to get a refill on water. I wanted to like this place so bad! I'll start off discussing the best thing I ate... the BISCUITS! OMG! I'd return just for them and that's it. There were so soft, crisp, and moist at the same time. Popeye's could never! The jams paired soooo well with too, especially all 3 together. I stopped by because so many people raved about how good the chicken is and I was extremely disappointed. This place is a 10 out of 10! The fried chicken is cooked to perfection. The seasoning is like a burst the flavors in my mouth! The skin is so crispy. Some of the best fried chicken I've had in Texas. I really like the creamed corn, but my boyfriend did not. The greens were pretty good too. I ordered the half fried chicken with collard greens. I personally love a good crunch, the skin was seasoned well and not overly breaded. Making it feel still light and not heavy. You know that sluggish feeling after eating a big meal, well I definitely didn't feel like that. I would say that's a plus. Now the collard greens really did it for me too, I love me some greens but I do not eat pork. When i saw they were made with turkey instead, I had to try them. You don't see that often in the south and they were still rich in flavor. My meal was a 10/10 My sister ordered the wings & catfish with a side of red beans and rice. I only tried the catfish from her entree and it was good to me. Again not overly breaded in batter, light seasoned well. I would def order the catfish next time. As for the beans and rice, I was told they were lacking flavor. I wouldn't know, I am just the messenger blogging. Besides that we visited on a Tuesday around 5pm, it was pretty empty no wait time. Our food came out pretty quick. The location is very nice, I loved the interior and atmosphere. Its modern but yet still gives off that 80s diner jazz like feeling. Would be a lovely place for a date night. The staff was very attentive and easy going. I would like to visit again and try the biscuits for sure. read more
