I've been wanting to try Gatlin's for a while now and decided to bring some family with us for our first time. This spot feels cozy and gives upscale diner vibes which was perfect. Our server was great and offered menu recommendations knowing it was our first time. The biscuits were hands down the star of the show! Unfortunately, all our main dishes were a bit of a disappointment. The fried chicken seemed to have been fried too long and had a ton of breading - definitely crispy but tasted burnt. Mac had great flavor but was very rich. Red beans and rice were just alright. As much as I wanted to love this spot the food just wasn't what I had expected.

My cousin raved about not my mamas biscuits with the bacon jam so we decided to come here. They had a $30 special which included an 8 piece chicken, medium side and 4 biscuits. Sadly we were supposed to get our biscuits to go and they were forgotten. We got charbroiled oysters which were delicious. I got the catfish & wings & two people for the fish of the day which was served with risotto. Our server was very friendly. The restaurant gives old school diner vibes with Black decor. There's a parking lot but I hear the restaurant gets packed on the weekends.

Delicious food and awesome service. We love to visit this restaurant every time we visit Houston.

    Fried oysters-thai style. DELICIOUS!

Reserved lunch for 4 on a Wednesday on a whim and started with Thai fried oysters, sangria, and gizzards. The oysters were excellent, and the gizzards were so tender my MIL did not know what to think, but I thought they were delicious. Whitney stayed attentive and patient with us out of towners even while busy, which we appreciated. We ordered catfish and shrimp with sides. The catfish had a stronger fish flavor than I wanted, and the shrimp were overcooked. No one was excited about their meals. The biscuits were just okay, but my FIL enjoyed the bacon jam. Cute place, diverse crowd, solid service, and I would come back for sangria and oysters and maybe their wings.

Lunch today: Gatlin's Fin and Feathers Last minute decision to go to lunch. Thankful for Yelp reviews that mentioned needing a reservation. They had zero seats available and a few people were turned away. We reserved around 1230 for a 2pm arrival. Parking is scarce but we found a spot. The place is small but cute. It's old but still nice inside. Our waitress GiGi was very nice and worked hard serving us. She had many recommendations and made sure we had everything we needed like condiments. Food: ordered the biscuits: 10/10, I used the butter only. Could only eat the top of one but will eat the rest. Very soft but not too crumbly. We ordered 3. My husband doesn't eat them but I know my son would help. He didnt join us today. Gumbo: very full with lots of meat. Had a few crab shells but otherwise good roux, sausage and shrimp. 7/10 Wings with red beans and rice: wings were huge. They gave me 5, very good crust and flavor. 8/10 Red beans and rice were good and creamy. Hubby had the fried fish and shrimp and mentioned how we both over ordered. We were stuffed and had plenty leftovers. Gigi helped us pack up everything. Best part, she noticed my husbands badge when he went in his wallet and asked if he was a first responder. An extra 10% off. And they have a loyalty program too. Gigi told us about the oyster special on Tuesdays and chicken special on Wednesdays We will definitely be back.

We came in on a Friday during lunch to celebrate closing on our house. It was a happening place for lunch time, but we were still able to get a table. The menu is full comfort food items, but I had my eye on the fried chicken! For starters, we had raw oysters and the biscuits, which they're famous for. The biscuits were so good, you could taste the love the kitchen put into it. The oysters were also good, but nothing to write home about. To go with the chicken, we also had mac and cheese and green beans (an off-menu special). Oh.... My goodness! The chicken was crispy and had a nice kick to it, while the mac cheese was creamy and cheesy. The green beans had a perfect balance between sweet and heat. If you want some feel good food, this is the place to go in the Heights!

I love Gatlin's fins and feather. They have catered our Christmas luncheon at my job many times. I have been in the restaurant many times for brunch, lunch, and dinner. I eaten the wings, catfish, gumbo, shrimp and grits, and the mind blowing biscuits with the amazing jams. All the food has been good but the biscuits are my absolute favorite!! I have always had good service. My only recommendation is to make reservations.

Much respect. Four of us were craving, and came for, gumbo tonight. And enjoyed it. A cup of 16 ounces could actually be a meal, what with the 3 shrimp, sausage, and chicken. And we had the opportunity to sample entrees. All good flavor profiles and spicing except for saltiness. Everything a little saltier than would be our preference. But tolerable. Barely. Why so much salt in everything? Anyway... But definitely SKIP the peach crumble. Brutally salty. Great ambience. Great waitstaff.

First time visiting and we were thoroughly impressed! We arrived on a Friday evening and were seated right away. The restaurant is small but really cute and gives retro diner vibes. It was clean, aesthetically pleasing, and seating included tables, and booths. We ordered a variety of items including the most delicious biscuits ever, they were as soft as a cloud and the butters/jams paired perfectly with them! We also tried redfish & risotto, grilled salmon, fried chicken, and oysters. All were really flavorful! The only complaint is that they did not bring all of the food out at the same time. As we continued to wait for the remainder of the items, the food that we did receive was getting cold. Overall it was a really good experience!

If you follow me, you already know I love this place! Whomever is at the hostess stand is ALWAYS welcoming, and everyone on the waitstaff is as well - and everyone has a great sense of humor. My most recent visit led me to the miso garlic wings and a side of mac and cheese. Both were DELISH! Could've taken home a double dose of the mac...so good! And they ALWAYS have great music playing in the background. And don't forget about the homemade biscuits and jam as a starter.

Taste less food! Bland on bland! Fried fish needs some seasoning! Red beans and rice is bland!

Apparently I should have kept my mouth shut and ate these burned $15 biscuits, because everything went downhill after I sent them back.

Dang man, I hate having to write this review but after all of the hype I've given this place and how poorly we were treated tonight I feel like I have to. The vibe was way off tonight at the restaurant before we even ordered. We ordered biscuits to come out before our meal, the biscuits did not come out until more than halfway through our meal and they were burnt (see picture). If these were $6 biscuits I might have just powered through, but these are $15 biscuits and they weren't good. We showed the server and he immediately took them away and showed the manager, who I could see was annoyed...which was disappointing. Long story short, they were supposed to replace the biscuits but apparently we got sent to the back of the line because I saw a lot of them go out over the 20 additional minutes I waited. My wife finally spoke to the manager, who seemed wildly disinterested, and asked if we could get a desert or something instead, but I declined because I just wanted to get the heck out of there. I later found out that they did not remove the biscuits from my check, so I paid $15 for two burnt biscuits. This was my favorite spot ya'll and it was ruined tonight. They can keep the change because they won't be getting any more of my money, The food is a 5 but customer experience is a 2 at best.

Chargrilled oysters. Peach sangria. Rosé lemonade.
    Dolly O.

Super friendly staff. Nice ambiance, with some throwback black classics playing in the background. I went for the $2 oysters on Tuesday. Got a dozen of the chargrilled ones, and they were delicious, 9/10. They only have cheap cocktails, I got the peach sangria which was $9 I believe and it was great. Now, I wasn't a huge fan of the red beans, fried chicken, or Mac and cheese. But I will definitely be back for cocktails and oysters.

We ordered a few different things: fried whole wings, dirty rice, yams, cabbage, mango habanero wings, fries, red beans and rice and Kool-aide. The fried wings, rice, fries and cabbage were well seasoned- you could taste the butter in them. My son wasn't crazy about the red beans n rice or mango habanero wings. He said it was more beans than rice and the wings lacked flavor. The Kool -aide was super sweet (as expected), but I added water to make it more palatable. While waiting we talked to some other guests Who decided to wait. Later the cook came out and chatted a bit- he was nice. Overall, food is good just come with patience.

I bring family and friends here all the time along with business partners. This is one of my favorite restaurants in Houston, Texas. You will experience the best food and the best service here every single time! Today was the first time I decided to get some food to go. Bradley was an absolute professional. While I was leaving, Johnny Carrabba came out and talked to me for a second. What a nice guy. Full of natural charisma. Reminds me of an old wise guy from casino or Goodfellas. We had a great conversation. I told him how my grandmother was born in Bryan Texas in 1927. He told me about his family that migrated there in 1905. He also mentioned his family had a store on Canal Street. I had no idea. An exceptional person, a legend in the restaurant industry here in Houston, Texas. It was great to meet you today Johnny. Thank you for your professionalism and hospitality and also thank you for serving some of the best food in Houston, Texas! Food: as you can see from all my pictures of the food is simply amazing. The best cornbread in the world. The best pot roast. The best sticky ribs. The best desserts. Everything here is phenomenal. Lunch dinner brunch you cannot go wrong. It was an absolute pleasure to meet Bradley and Johnny today I've been coming to this location for years and I will continue to come and support this restaurant.

Feels good when an establishment takes pride in their customer's feedback and puts a plan into action. Honestly, part of me was hoping that last time was just a fluke or an off day. This time around, everything from the service to the food was great. We had a 12:30 Sunday reservation for two and opted to sit inside this time. We ordered the cast-iron cornbread, chargrilled oysters, and a cup of gumbo each to start. For entrées, I had the Gulf Fish, while my husband went with the crawfish Florentine. Everything came out beautifully timed, almost like a perfectly paced three-course meal, which obviously made the whole experience feel elevated and relaxed. Our waiter was knowledgeable, attentive, and on top of everything without being overbearing. I also tried the prickly pear aid (non-alcoholic), and it was super refreshing, definitely worth ordering if you like a little tartness to cleanse your palate. Overall, this visit felt like a completely different experience than last time. It delivered the elevated experience a place like Eunice promises and what I was used to originally. Looking forward to celebrating my birthday here in June!

Unfortunately, the overall dining experience was disappointing due to both the service and the food quality. Our server was very slow throughout the evening. After ordering cocktails, it took approximately 20 minutes for them to arrive. We then ordered our meals... I had the burger and fries, while my girlfriend ordered the shrimp and grits. Both dishes were noticeably over salted. After finishing our meals, we waited an additional 15-20 minutes just to receive a dessert menu. Eventually, we decided not to wait any longer and went to Dessert Gallery down the street instead. While the atmosphere and appearance of the restaurant were excellent, the slow service and food issues negatively impacted the experience. Based on this visit, I would likely not return.

So I quite naturally ordered the max. piece catfish (3 pc.) with fries and greens, and OMG! The flavor, the crispiness! Just like I fry it! Excellent customer service! Needless to say, this is now my "catfish spot" whenever I visit the area again. For dessert, I had the peach cobbler. Another hit! So balanced with flavor and sweetness! My family had the oxtails and blackened salmon. They are licking their fingers! Why is this place not rated a perfect 5?! You better believe they get 5 stars from me! Earned! (Sorry, I ate my fish and peach cobbler before I realized I didn't take a pic. And the presentation was magnificent on all plates!)

I ordered the turkey wings which came with rice & 2sides with cornbread. I got the black eyed peas & greens with no meat in my greens. The standout for me were the black eyed peas. They were excellent. Everything else was just ok. I liked that everything wasn't overly salty. It just lacked that extra kick. The serving sizes were pretty good & I have plenty leftovers. I would be back again to try another dish because I feel for soul food this was pretty healthy because it was overly salty.
