Eat in, don't bother with take out. I really wanted to like this place. The food could be good but because of the service I can't be sure. I made an order for take out at the hostess stand in the restaurant for 5 dishes with the hostess. She confirmed all of the dishes by reading them back to me. I was told 30 minutes and I could wait at the bar, I went outside instead. I came back inside in 20 minutes and the same hostess who took my order was super rude and told me to talk to the bartender. The bartender was totally chill and brought me a bag of food and the bill. It seemed too cheap so I looked and saw 2 dishes missing from the bill. I told the bartender who was very apologetic but my order was part of the initial food that I was given so by the time the kitchen could make the dishes the hostess didn't put in, my dish was cold. The two who had the hot and forgotten dishes did seem to enjoy it. read more

We went here because it was about the only place in town that didn't have an hour long wait on a Friday night. From that perspective, it was great - no wait at all. However, we weren't that impressed with the food. It was all right, but rather expensive. Also, they wanted us to pay extra for chips and salsa. We did, and they were good, but still - rather unexpected when we were paying that much for our food. I think everywhere in Durango is rather expensive, though, so that's probably nothing different. This is the best "Mexican" cooking I have found. We are frequent fliers at Gazpacho every time we were in town. If you want the standard "Mexican" food this will provide you what you are use to, but with a definite "New Mexican" spin. There isn't a menu item that doesn't have some kind of Gazpacho specialty ingredient. Love the it all. The staff are friendly, attentive and helpful. The restaurant is quaint and bright. We wanted Mexican food and were staying near downtown, so decided to try Gazpacho. I was disappointed that they did not offer chips and salsa to us. The service was average. I had the house margarita which was decent. I ordered the Sonoran tacos and was impressed with the shredded beef and the entire tacos, but the rice and beans were pretty bad- sticky, lumpy Spanish rice and the refried beans were runny and bland. My husband ordered enchiladas and he thought they were pretty good. The end of the meals came and our waitress brought out what looked like fried dough - I forget the name- and it was delicious with the butter and honey ( was wondering why there was honey on the table). If they improved on their rice and beans and gave out cops and salsa this place would rock! read more

Best margaritas I had in a long time! My husband and I tried the Antigua margarita and it was perfect for lunch time not overwhelming with citrus mix like some I had in other restaurants. The food also very delicious. I had the tortilla soup with taquitos and my husband had the beef tacos and they give you 3 kinds of salsa with your chips. Awesome New Mexican food. Red salsa that comes with complimentary chips is 1st class. Green chile sauce on enchiladas and tamales was fantastic (and hot!). Carne adovada option on enchiladas is a good choice. Oh, and get the pasole on the side, you won't regret it. We liked it so much we went back the next night. I went to this restaurant last year on a trip to Colorado. After seeing all of the reviews from would be mexican food experts, I felt compelled to write something down. 25 years ago I lived in Texas and thought I knew what wonderful authentic mexican food was. To be sure it was great, and I loved the fajitas and other Texmex offerings available. Then I moved to California and discovered Chile Verde and Carnitas and thought that I had now found true authentic Mexican food. Then I moved to the Four Corners area. I pined for my favored Chile Verde, but over time I came to love the roasted green chiles, carne adovada, green chile stew and rellenos of northern New Mexico. Now I live in California again, and I've come to realize that authentic mexican food depends on where you live, and what you love. And thankfully, It's all great! Now about Gazpachos. We were in Durango for 2 nights and ate at Gazpachos both nights. We had the carne adovada both nights. We also had margaritas and sopaipillas both nights. They were all as good as I had hoped they would be. The service was good. One night it was a little bit slower than i would have liked, but the restaurant was very busy, so I was OK with that. The waiters both nights were outstanding, and one of them even turned us on to where we could get a bushel of chiles roasted the next day. I was in heaven to say the least! This restaurant is a great find. I doubt that everything on the menu is outstanding, but it's the rare restaurant that does everything well. Walked in after doing the Polar Express. They told us it would be about a 30 minute wait, which was fine. Without taking our name down, we went to the bar area to have a seat and pass the time. Less than 30 minutes later, the hostess came and got us. However the table in the bar area next to us had been sitting there before us and we were going to our table before them. The wife of that party asked when their table would be ready and luckily a table just cleared out and it would be just a minute or so. The hostess admitted to us as she took us to our table that she totally forgot about them- it's no wonder since she didn't take down names. Otherwise the food was good. The salsa they bring out ahead of time has a good spice to it. I had La Grande Burrito with chicken and the red sauce. I ate it all plus my sopapia and was totally stuffed. Decent kids menu but we didn't get anything for he kids to do while we waited- no coloring or whatever. Good thing we have smart phones I guess. read more

Really enjoyed tasting New Mexican green chilies in Gazpacho's delicious Huevos Rancheros dish. The carne adovada (pork meat seasoned in red chilies) was incredibly flavorful. Huevos Rancheros was their lunch special. This huge portion includes rice and refried beans, plus sopapilla, and was only $8 and change. Really excellent value for high-end New Mexican food. The food was fantastic! I was craving green chili, and it was excellent, but I was surprised to discover the red chili was also superb. The cocktails were on point. This is not the cheapest place in town, but well worth the price. I would have given this place five stars, but Shane gave us terrible service. We showed up at a slow time between lunch and dinner. He took our drink orders and brought out drinks, but them did not come back for a long time to ask for our entree order. We had to ask for chips twice, and they did not come out until right before our entrees arrived. He never came by to check on our waters. We were seated right by the kitchen and the register, so he passed or table frequently, but rarely looked in our direction. He never cleared my empty Margarita glass for the entire meal, even though I pushed it to the middle of the table where it was easy to reach. Long after we were done eating, he finally came by to offer to go boxes and ask if we were ready for the checks. We then watched him check on several other tables and disappear in the back for a while before he finally showed up with the checks. We then had another long wait of watching him check on other tables while ignoring us before he finally came back to cash us out. Then he had the gall to ask us to give him a review on yelp to help him win a contest. I'm sorry Shane, but you need to be paying a lot more attention to your tables if you want to win a yelp contest. read more

This place has a bad customer service. We were told that there will be 30-40 mins and we liked the place since we have been here before, so we were willing to wait. Once We told them we will wait, all the servers and the greeter started to scramble and suddenly there was a table available. The place was 90% empty. This was a very bad experience makes you wonder why they couldn't offer a seat before. We had our dinner and decided to enjoy regardless. All it takes is one bad experience for a returning customer to never return so I hope the management will take note. read more

A friend of my dads recommended this place so we decided to try it. We were seated quickly but we got put near the kitchen which can be either good or bad, depending on the restaurant. In this case, awful. Pros: we got chips, salsa, and drinks etc. pretty quickly. Cons: we had to listen to our waiter talk to the wait staff about his sexual intentions with a young woman that was eating at the restaurant. Later, their loud conversation (and when I say loud, I mean louder and more audible than the kitchen and the dining area) switched to who was going drinking and partying later. Half an hour later, I got my simple bean burrito, which was scalding hot and I'm not even sure they made it with beans. Taco Bell did a better job. The only thing that saved the meal were the sopaipillas, which were mediocre at best. I will never return and I hope my dads friend discovers the difference between food and crap. read more

Wow!! Thoroughly enjoyed the green chile stew!! It was totally authentic New Mexican green with pork and veggies!! The homemade tortillas, chips and salsa were also really good!! Great green Chile something I miss since moving to the Northwest. Gazpachos is one of my favorite places to get my fix when I come home for a visit. My favorite is the combo plate. That comes with a relleno, tamale, chalupa (with pork) beans and rice, and most importantly smothered in delicious green chile!. I got an ala carte carne Asada taco and split all of it with my wife. Definitely more than enough food! A surprise was the sopapillas that came with the meal afterwards. Delicious!!! I read a complaint that they charge for chips and salsa, which they do, but why fill up on a bunch of chips when you can enjoy MORE authentic New Mexican food instead? read more

I went here today as my favorite Mexican place in Durango, Zia Taqueria, was closed for Easter. I will never return to this restaurant. What a disappointment. I ordered a taco salad with a plain corn tortilla instead of the fried shell, no meat, just rice and beans, please. For $11 I was supposed to get rice, beans, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, guac, sour cream, and meat. So, not ordering meat I figured I'd get a fair amount of beans. Not at all, it was about 10 pintos and 1/3 cup gloppy Mexican rice, no cheese, some shredded iceberg lettuce. Ok, so I asked for some more pintos and some cheese, which was delivered in a small bowl. It was ok, nothing great or even very authentic, but passable. When I was given my bill, I saw that I was charged $2.25! for the pintos and cheese! I told my server I did not agree, and she let the manager know. The manager then said, "The amount of beans you got is what it comes with", to which I responded "So, I'm paying $14 for rice and beans, no meat, some shredded lettuce and a little guac?" So she only charged me $1 extra for what should have been there in the first place. Ridiculous. Am new to Durango from Southern California where Mexican food is in abundance. This place is way overpriced and not authentic. So not worth. Take your money to Zia Taqueria, the food is abundant and reasonably priced. read more

Came here on the recommendation of hotel staff. We started off waiting in the bar for a table. The bar service was fine and I wasn't even halfway through my beer when the table was ready. I had the Carne Adovado, holy crap was it good, and my husband had the fish tacos on special which he said were very good but not to die for. My dish was just spicy enough to get my attention but never crossed the line into I-can't-eat-this territory, and I don't eat a lot of really hot food. The chef definitely handles the chile heat with a deft hand. Table service was very good in spite of things being really busy and we thought things were fairly priced given the quality of the food and service. We will definitely go back to Gazpacho on our next trip to Durango. read more
