This place is so great - honestly anywhere that specializes in grilled cheese is bound to be amazing. When you first walk in, there is adequate bar-like seating by the windows, and it doesn't seem like enough. But after you order, you get to the back of the restaurant which has plenty of seating (can fit more than you'd think in the seemingly small space). The grilled cheese was so good! I got the French Onion, a basic sandwich with challah bread and caramelized onions inside. It was cheesy deliciousness in my mouth *drools* I feel like this sandwich is easy to make at home, which makes me want to come back and try something else. A delicious indulgence! The staff were great and did a really good job with COVID safety measures and table distancing. The grilled cheeses are big and you will be very full - but it was so good! Perhaps it was the extended sidewalk patio and the heaters. Or the fact that they have moved the counter to the front of the patio where you look over the menu and place your order. GCDC sits right on Pennsylvania Avenue in DC next to the white house and while it sounds like a great idea for a restaurant.. ..its nothing but a glorified grilled cheese sandwich restaurant. The thought in my head was that it would be the thinly sliced meat inside but it was more diced which made the ratio of meat and cheese one sided in every bite. The flavor was good but they overcooked my bread and normally I would love a good crisp to my sandwich...but not a crunch to where it is burnt. I added a side of tomato soup and wanted to dio the sandwich but even the soup was a little too much. I've never had a tomato soup that came with a kick to it and that pretty much killed my idea of a sandwich dipping. I was thinking of giving this place a 3 star for being an average but all three times that I've come here, the service seems to be very slow. The first time I came during a lunch rush but the last two times I came where well after that yet I waited just as long. My bf was so excited to try this place 'cause he loves cheese! We came around 3pm and got seated immediately. It didn't look busy but it was really noisy. Might have been because of the ceiling being too low or everyone was just really loud. Really wish we got seated somewhere else. Light was dim and the ambiance felt hipster-y. Our server gave us the menu and some water. The menu didn't have much choices. My bf got a small appetizer which I forgot the name of but it didn't look appetizing to me. He said it was good though. Phenomenal! Such an creative selection of sandwiches! My husband got a Cubano and I got a Reuben and we split them. The Cubano was delicious with chopped pickles. The Reuben was perfectly with pastrami, kraut, and melty cheese. We also shared a bowl of their highly recommended Mac-n-cheese and it was delicious as well, with a faint hint of garlic. The table we were seated at for a party of 3 was a little cramped but I guess they accommodate the best they can. We went on Saturday and were given the weekend menu. This is probably my favorite restaurant in DC. I send everyone I know here because their menu is to die for! They make the most mouth watering mac and cheeses, grilled cheeses and quesadillas. I love their gluten free and vegan options, since you can create your own of anything, or choose from their well thought out menu.
