Randomly spotted this place on google map while driving around DC. Came in right at lunch time (12pm) and a bunch of office workers were picking up their orders. Although it was busy we got our orders in about 15mins. There is a touchscreen tablet at the entrance to order but if you are eating here, you can scan one of the QR codes either on the tables or bar to order from your phone. Seating: There are three booth tables towards the back, a couple standing tables at the entrance and a couple outside. Carolina BBQ: it is on the sweeter side due to the bbq sauce but super cheesy and crunchy. Jalapeños are not spicy at all. Cheesesteak: very cheesy and the pickle adds to it really well. Not too meaty though. But the steaks were so soft. You can switch out the type of bread without an additional cost so I did sourdough. Had lunch here on our trip to DC, wanted to try something different, great location, 2 bl9cks from the white house. Small place was full, we ended up sitting at the counter, pretty sure the kids really liked that, Staff was very friendly and took very good care of us. Now the important part, the food! These aren't the grilled cheese grandma made. They had a lot of options. I ordered the young American Sourdough bread with cheese and bacon my grandson ordered the pizza one, mozzarella cheese pepperoni and marinara. We traded halves so we both got to try both sandwiches, and both were amazing. I think I liked the pizza one just a little more. Granddaughter had a burger and loved it. They also have Mac and Cheese, didn't try it but it looked great. definitely will go back next time I'm in DC read more

We stopped in here on a cold and windy Saturday. We were greeted by staff and directed to tables for our group. Ordering was east from the table and the service was relatively quick. Our food was amazing. We had a Young American that we loved!! The Chicken and Bacon Alfredo was delicious as well. Perfect for us! The cons were it was unclear where to pick up food. Food is set out for anyone to grab and someone grabbed ours. They brought it back but we didn't feel comfortable eating it. I could cry! As someone with a gluten allergy, I thought grilled cheese was out of my reach. Then I find this grilled cheese bar! All sandwiches can be made gluten free! I got the Turkey pesto grilled cheese and it's delicious! A lot of gf bread tastes like cardboard but this bread was amazing! I'm just so impressed. YUM! If you're in DC around the Smithsonian/monuments, this is worth the walk! It was a great pick me up during lunchtime. The restaurant is a bit small so plan to sit outside or around the area. Came by mid-touring for lunch. It was a good find. I was worried it would be total tourist trap, but it wasn't. Ordering was easy, enter your order at the kiosk and wait for a text letting you know your order is ready. It was quick and easy. I popped in this place for a quick dinner while on the go. I actually ordered online and there was some technical issues with Apple Pay. I should've known that this acquaintance was starting off wrong. I was literally across the street ordering online. I arrived to pick up my order and I was about to go inside (it was raining cats and dogs) and I was damn near accosted by an employee. I was not permitted to come inside. There appeared to be customers sitting and waiting on their orders. I asked to use the restroom and I was not permitted to use the restroom. I got soaked in spite of a tent type covering outside. I was treated like a delivery person...no disrespect to delivery people at all. So, I rarely eat bread but I was hungry today. I ordered the "cheesesteak" and I thought it would satisfy my steak and cheese craving but no not really. It was blah and that's not as descriptive as I'd like to be. For some reason, they chop everything up, even pickles, so that you can taste that it is there, but it's not really all that tasty to begin with. Flavor was just plain ole mediocre. Not sure what kind of cheese they use but it definitely is not what I'm used to. I definitely need to get into the grilled cheese game because I'd put this spot out of business. Lol I did have a teeny weeny dessert bowl. It was great. It was "berry cheesecake" and it reminded me of a mix of strawberry cheesecake and a strawberry shortcake. Lastly, I gave this place three stars merely because of their drink "Life's a peach." They would've only gotten one star. Came here during my lunch break with a co-worker for lunch. The creations of grilled cheese they have are really cool. We ordered the Carolina BBQ and the young American. The Carolina BBQ came with cheddar cheese, mac & cheese, roast pork, jalapenos, and BBQ sauce. The young American came with sourdough bread, American cheese, bacon, and tomatoes. They tasted pretty good, but the bread was really hard, and they lacked ingredients. It is almost as if they did not add enough to cover the sandwich. I have been to GCDC many times and somehow I've not done a review. If you're a grill cheese/tomato soup fanatic then this is the place for you. Beware this isnt your mama's grill cheese and the price will let you know it. The sandwiches are very good to say the least with a variety of cheeses to choose from; and the Texas toast is ready for prime time. My go to is the grill cheese and bacon because bacon makes everything better. You can get a side of tots, but I bbelieved they are baked so don't be surprised if they aren't what you expected. There are many sandwich options and even salads for those whose don't want a sandwich. Seating is limited so if you have a large group be sure to get there early and together. The sitting area upstairs is very cozy so be prepared to enjoy everyone's conversation in addition to your own. GCDC is a great place to have a spin on your childhood fave especially in the winter. read more

The overhead lights produced a lot of heat and made it a little too toasty where we were sitting. I honestly kind of felt like *I* was a grilled cheese sitting under a heat lamp. We started with the loaded tots, which was slightly over baked and too mushy and salty. Soon after, we got our grilled cheese orders and all agreed that they were just meh and that the ingredients (including the cheese) wasn't that great quality. In my case, my veggie melt was grilled for a bit too long. We were also not satisfied with the prices for these mediocre grilled cheeses. I'm not upset that we tried this place out because the experience was decent. However, I can't see myself coming back here soon, despite me loving all things cheese. read more

When we were ordering online we accidentally ordered from the cheeseburger menu, not the grilled cheese menu. So when you see Grilled Cheeseburgers and then Alcohol, keep scrolling, the Grilled Cheese sandwiches are listed after the alcohol. Weird placement, I think. The burgers are about $20 a pop and personally I felt they were a bit overpriced. The grilled cheese sandwiches are $10 a pop. What we got: NY Grilled Cheeseburger - loved the amount of meat and great flavour. B&B Grilled Cheeseburger - was a savory sweet though felt like the blue cheese was a bit too light. Tomato soup - meh. Nothing to write home about. I feel when I make tomato soup from the can and add some herbs to spice it up my version tastes better. Mac & Cheese - don't hurt me, I'm a huge sucker for boxed Mac & Cheese so it's incredibly hard for a restaurant to impress me with their version. And I don't like the bigger noodles. So it's no surprise I'm not a fan of GCDCs M&C. My companion supported my vote and adds this M&C was too bland of a M&C and there wasn't really anything to set it apart from what you could make yourself from scratch. Would I pay $20 again for a sandwich here? Probably not. The sandwiches were good, but after half a sandwich my taste buds were a bit bored. And honestly the taste was like a high end fast food joint with pricing that was a little bit more than that kind of restaurant would have. I've given GCDC two tries and haven't been super impressed either time. But most of my friends love it, so it does work for some people. read more

There's art & T-shirts available for sale. The bathroom situation was crazy... soppy toilet paper all over the floor and it smelled like pee. 0/10 on the bathroom situation. Lastly... you scan the menu via QR code & pay electronically via apple pay. With all that said... THE FOOD WAS INCREDIBLE. The ONLY reason I gave 4 stars and not 5 is because I waited too long for my meal. I ordered the lobster Mac and cheese on the app "Ritual" which gave me $10 off because it was my first time there!! Before you come here, remember, you have these ingredients at home lol. At home, you wont have to worry about bread crust that's a little too hard to chew or worry about bland mac and cheese. You certainly won't have to cram into a small place, nor will you have to wait 25 minutes to get your food. The cheeses and ingredients I tried were fresh and good, but the breads, not so much. It's never a good look when my favorite item off of a grilled cheese menu is a drink... Someone has some explaining to do. Despite both myself and my friend is hungry and in the mood for grilled cheese, we came out disappointed and just plain old bored with the experience. It was unfortunately a typical bad experience. The lady at the front was rude and spoke in the style of "up-speak" or "uptalk" came off as extremely arrogant and condescending. I and my friend became aware of it immediately. It sounded like someone was clawing a chalkboard which emulated enough pretentiousness to make me want to rip my ears off. Despite the intentional pitch/ tone of her voice, she was just rude to us. Very abrupt and didn't answer questions fully, seemed like she was annoyed with us. 100% made me feel like I was talking to the fun police. The drinks were too strong, it really took away from what they were supposed to taste like. But that's probably a good thing because of how bad the food was. My buzz totally made me forget for a second how sh!tty the service and the quality of food was. In all honesty, an infant could make a better-grilled cheese by microwaving expired wheat bread with EZ cheese sprayed on it. Only reason I would have considered giving 2 stars is that the actual waiter was a pretty chill guy, needless to say, he got a good tip for his wonderful services. Despite this young mans effort, a hero in my opinion, this doesn't warrant a 2 star review. Goodbye GCDC. The only thing I wasn't too fond of was the lack of staff interaction and having to order from your phone only. As someone who was new to the area, I was confused to begin with. I naturally had to go (low carb diet be damned!) and I was not disappointed. I ordered the veggie grilled cheese only on white bread, and it was delicious. Just the right amount of buttery grilled-ness on the outside, and lovely melty cheese and veg inside. I was afraid it might be too heavy but it was not. I ate every last bit!
