I scheduled an appointment with GCSF for an on-site estimate. About 10 minutes after the scheduled appointment time, I received a call from the office saying the estimator had arrived, spoken with the residents, and then left. The problem was that I had been waiting at the correct location the entire time. Before the appointment, I had both verbally and in writing asked them to make sure they did **not** go to a different address in another town. The receptionist confirmed that the estimator had gone to the wrong address and assured me he would come to the correct one. Unfortunately, after waiting another hour, I never heard from the estimator or the office. My attempts to call the office also went unanswered. At that point, it became clear that no one was coming and no one was going to let me know. Mistakes happen, but what disappointed me most was the lack of communication and professionalism. GCSF wasted more than 90 minutes of my time and couldn't extend the courtesy of a simple phone call or update. Based on this experience, I can't recommend them. read more

For months, we called and followed up multiple times regarding the issues with the irrigation and the condition of the work, and we were repeatedly ignored. You were aware of who we were despite the Yelp review being under a different name because we were the ones consistently reaching out with no acknowledgment. Regarding the irrigation issue: the damage wouldn't have occurred if your crew had properly capped the existing irrigation before installing the pavers. The fact that you had to redo a section later at no charge doesn't negate that the issue was caused by your team's oversight in the first place. Had you taken responsibility and communicated with us when we initially reached out, we wouldn't have had to resort to a public complaint. Andre and team are top notch from start to finish. They worked on our project with scope and expectations clear defined, and delivered excellent work. After the initial consultation with Luis, Andre provided a detailed quote with breakdown of all the items, labor cost, and materials. Their quote is not the cheapest but definitely the longest. I like how the quote had all the cost breakdown and specifics regarding choice of materials and scope of work. Another thing I wanted to highlight is the fact that Andre was able to propose something creative and different to enhance our existing design, so that we ended up with multi-tier retaining walls and re-using a lot of the existing boulders on the side. Our project involved a lot of demo / excavation on a steep hillside, building a large paved deck with railing + steps up and down. From start from finish, the crew worked every single weekday from 8am sharp to 5pm. There is no playing loud music, no messing around during lunch time, just super organized hard work and impeccable work ethic. I don't ever write reviews and this is long overdue but I had to after Andre and his team transformed our backyard from an area we never used to a place where we spend time with family and friends on a daily basis. We have had horrible past experiences with construction/landscape projects gone bad and have always been hesitant to get any work done. Our first meeting with Andre where we brainstormed and told him what our vision was as well as our budget was pleasant. He was very transparent, honest and just seemed like a genuine and honest guy. The next few meetings where the planning, drawings and pricing came to light were equally as pleasant. He was quick to change things around based on our budget and what we wanted, while prioritizing the quality of the overall project. We were told completion will take a month with most of the work being done in 2 weeks. We thought for sure that was too good to be true. The whole project from start to end was completely seamless, the bulk of the work was completed within 2 weeks and by a month everything was done. Luis the project manager who was our point of contact walked us through what to expect, what materials we needed to pick out and communicated with us on a day to day basis to ensure everything was the way we wanted, while providing great recommendations. He was an absolute pleasure to work with and everything we were hoping for, he made happen. The end result blew us away and was so much better than what we hoped for. The project was affordable with no hidden extra costs, the whole team was so respectful and cleaned up after themselves at the end of each day, their attention to detail and quality of work is impeccable and they were a joy to work with. This is the second time I've used GCSF. The first time was about 5 years ago to turf my front yard. This time was a bigger project to do a total backyard remodel. They leveled it out and added retaining walls so that we could have turf/yard space for the kids to play and a seating area. The work quality was top notch and the crew was amazing. When I moved into my home in the Mission Terrace neighborhood of San Francisco, my yard was a complete mess that was unusable for anything. When I decided to clean it up, I got 6 to 7 estimates from various landscape contractors and Andre was both the most professional and economical. Andre was the only person to show up with a measuring instrument and he created a diagram of our yard before beginning the construction process. GCSF & the entire team ( led by Andre as project manager) is phenomenal! I was connected to them through Yardzen after the design process. They came out for an initial consult & was very collaborative for all my design changes/edits. There was a little bit of miscommunication with the scheduling ( they swapped me with another client in error & ended up doing their project), so I had a bit of frustration over it. Honestly, if my in person consult wasn't as good it was, I would have moved on. Once the above was resolved, everything moved along super fast. Andre moved things around to start my project within 2.5weeks of figuring out the scheduling mishap. They came out for a final review the Friday before the demo & one advantage of the the mishap was I had more time to make design edits, all of which Andre & team incorporated and improvised. Gardencare SF was recommended by a friend of ours who had hired them to redo the backyard. We loved their artificial grass and were looking for something similar for our kids. Andre was super speedy at coming out for an initial consult and was really open and honest with his recommendations. I felt listened to, and he was prompt with his follow-up estimate and modifications to the proposal after some email back and forth. They were fairly busy so our work wasn't scheduled until a few months later (which we were totally fine with). Once work started, we were impressed with how professional and efficient the crew were. They worked almost nonstop from 8am to 4/4:30pm and we could tell they paid attention to detail. Andre (ok - there are two Andres - one handles more the business side and the other with hands on operations. They are both super nice!) was always available to answer our questions and explain any hiccups in the work. The crew finished our backyard in 3 and a half days! They ripped out everything in the existing yard, excavated down 6-8 inches, leveled the ground, lay down artificial grass and new pavers. I really have nothing bad to say about this crew. We recently bought a home in San Mateo that left a lot to be desired for its "yard". Andre came out to assess the work in person twice to make sure we were aligned. He sent a detailed quote via email which was seamless to review and approve. We were able to get the work started three days following and he completed the following in less than a work week: knocked down a cement wall, removed cement pavement, dug up our existing lawn and plants, leveled the area, installed new planter boarder, sod, and a new sprinkler and drip system AND did our front yard landscaping (including cutting down trees, removing old foliage, and putting in a drip system & bark for our new planter space). They worked quickly, thoroughly, professionally, and we remained in close communication on key decisions the entire time. His price was SUPER reasonable for the quality & quantity of work done. We are very, very happy with GCSF!! Andre met with us in April and gave us a detailed and price competitive quote. While we wait for our start date in October, he would answer questions for me, especially concerning the purchase of the pavers. Andre's team does all the labor, we just needed to provide the pavers. The whole job took one week! His team works really hard and they stay long days in order to complete the job quickly. Everyday they would tidy up before leaving, which was good for us having to boys in the house. We are most impressed with the quality of the work. They have their own paver Einstein, who did things we hadn't even considered. As a Real Estate Broker, I needed a reliable hard working professional gardener to clean up a property that I had listed in San Francisco. Flavio was the only one out of at least 10 calls we made that followed up, made himself available the next day to bid the job. Bid was sent back same day in writing and very reasonable: Cut down two large root bound dead trees in front. Weed all overgrowth, replace with bark. Cut down 10 foot high wild and overgrown bushes and trees in backyard, along with clear out rubbish, broken pipes, old patio furniture, barbeques, tarps, etc. left by previous tenant. Then haul all of it away. He did it all in one day, sent me before and after pictures, and did all this work unsupervised via a lock box. This was above and beyond all expectations. These guys were incredible. They completely renovated our entire backyard, leveling a hill to install turf, ripping out a bunch of old, dead trees, building and staining a new retaining wall out of ipe, installing a french drain and drip irrigation system, planting a few new plants, and covering the remaining dirt with weed cover and mulch. Everything only took them about a week and a half. The only thing they really messed up was accidentally damaging one of the flowers while planting it, but they replace it with a new one so all is good. Highly recommended. Been meaning to write this for a while now. I initially hired Andre and the GardenCareSF crew way back in 2018 (I know I know. Super late review. Sorry!) and recently had them come back to clear weeds/brush from the backyard. With my multiple medical issues, I can't do the work myself. I wanted the backyard cleared out before the 4th of July holiday (afraid stray fireworks would get the brush in the backyard), and they were able to schedule the work immediately. With SIP, I was really happy to have done everything through their online portal - quote, approval of the work order, and even payment. I think, however, that's because I'm an established...and happy...customer. If you're a new client, you'll probably have to have an in-person consult with Andre. Also love that they take credit card which is what cemented my decision to hire them. Max came out with one other guy - didn't catch his name - around 7am, and they finished around 8am. They got to work right away, finished the backyard, took care of the weeds in the front driveway, and even packed up and hauled away all the green waste. They also definitely practice social distancing. I was busy breaking down cardboard boxes when I realized it was super quiet. I looked and their van was gone; I didn't even realize they'd left. LOL. They did a fantastic job. The weeds weren't as bad as they can usually get. My neighbor's daughter asked for a link to their site. I sent her pictures of the final product, and she said it looked great. I really wanted to give 5 stars. I understand they may be super busy, but it was a little difficult to get a hold of someone to confirm the exact time of my appointment. I had to keep my day totally free, because I had no idea. When they arrived at 7am, I was actually still asleep, and I think my neighbors also probably hate me for the weed whacker starting before 8am. Oops. However, because they arrived and finished so early, it left me free to work uninterrupted the rest of the day. Other than that though, I'm pretty happy with the work they did. I cannot say enough nice things about Flavio and his team. When we met Flavio, we already had a plan in mind as to what we wanted the project to look like. We wanted to choose our own stones and plants and he was willing to work with that. He was very knowledgeable, estimated the material needed and knew what it would take to get the job done. When we bought our house, the backyard was a mess with dead trees and weed all over. Now, thanks to Flavio, our backyard is a calming place for us to go to everyday after work to enjoy with our pets. Flavio worked with us twice already - first to remove the dead trees and weed, then to install a bench for us. The good: Flavio is friendly, approachable, on time, easy to work with, and great at communication. He was very detail oriented and gave us a great price for doing our work. The crew worked fast too. The bad: his staff are not as detail oriented as Flavio. I would've given him 5 stars but after the bench installation, I was peeved with some of the stuff that his crew did. Examples: 1. part of the brick was sticking out (which Flavio came back to fix later) 2. they left their lunches from the first day in the yard instead of putting their garbage in the garbage can 3. they did not plant evenly (the plants on the left were about 1.5 feet apart and the plants on the right were about 1 foot apart only) and 4. they put cut bricks in our garbage can without tellling us, which made it very heavy to even move. My husband had to take out all the cut bricks and we are going to have to put it out one week at a time. I provided Flavio the above feedback so that he can have a talk with his crew. This is one of the best contractors I have ever worked with. We had retaining walls constructed and pavers installed. Andre one was a good initial contact developing our concept and then Andre two and his father Carlos did the measurements and supervised the work. No drama, no hassles just great people to work with and very exacting with their expectations. Project adjustments on-the-fly were a breeze. Andre accommodated our requests without any complaints and had good insights and suggestions for the best outcome. He was unflappable. They have assembled an excellent team who gets right to work and they are very professional. You can tell they are very experienced doing this and they have their own tools - no dodgy rental equipment. Our neighbors were amazed how hard and how quickly they worked. I was really impressed with the work done by GCSF. We had pavers (~500 ft) and artificial grass (~350 ft) installed in the back and side yards. Getting the install scheduled was tricky at first because they're busy and had to work around my changing schedule. But once they broke ground, Andre and his crew worked tirelessly to get the job done. Any time they had a question they asked how we'd like it done, so it helps to already know what you want. But we usually didn't and their suggestions turned out exactly as we'd hoped. I was hesitant to have to buy the pavers separately but it was a super easy process. We picked the paver we wanted, called the paver store (shout out San Carlos Garden Supply) and placed the order over the phone to be delivered a few days later. Nothing to it. We'll be recommending GCSF to any friends who are redoing their yards. Their prices are fair and they do top notch work. read more

Not the best / not the worst. The second time they came I actually called Flavio back to clean up and fix some things, which he did. I think my review may echo a few other recent ones as the communication with this company was really bad. I had someone out to look at my project, they sent a quote, I approved the quote, they scheduled an install date and thats where the "normal" experience ends. I messaged just prior to install and he said he was behind schedule. And that was all. No reschedule, no updates, no follow up. I emailed & called again to see if there was any update and there was no response. I still have yet to hear back from them. I guess I'm glad we didn't go through with the install as I'm sure if there were any warranty issues or anything regarding follow up, they would have not responded. Flavio is one of the most trustworthy guys I have met. My front lawn became very dry after not watering it consistently for a long period of time. He came a day after my inquiry and provided a very reasonable estimate. His guys done a great job. Few days later, I noticed there were few dry patches and he came over quickly and figured out my existing sprinkler system didn't water certain sections of my lawn. He offered to fix the sprinkler heads with again, a very reasonable price. It was such a pleasure to work with him. I would NOT recommend Garden Care SF. They provided what I thought was good gardening clean up for me, but they CLOGGED my storm drain in the process. See photo. They did an initial clean up for my front and backyard, including a power wash of the backyard which Andre recommended. Over the years, the concrete floor had accumulated a layer of dirt/soil such that weeds were growing and it was hard to remove without a power wash. Initially, I was very happy as they seemed to do a thorough good job. Immediately when the gardeners left, I did notice that there was muddy water mixed with dirt pooling around my storm drain, but just figured it was due to the large amount of water from the power wash. However, a few weeks later, when my plumber was in my house for a different issue, he noticed that my storm drain was clogged with a lot of dirt. He was busy that day so I ended up calling a different plumber, who also confirmed that my storm drain was clogged with dirt/soil. I ended up paying a few hundred dollars to unclog the storm drain. Afterwards, I called Andre to ask if Garden Care SF has a protocol for collecting excess dirt removed from a power wash before even explaining what happened to him. He flat out said "no" very dismissively. I then told him what had happened at which point he denied that there was even any dirt that was power washed from my backyard. He claims it was just "a little dirty." He said, "If there was dirt, you wouldn't have been able to see the concrete" to which I responded, "That's true. There was so much dirt that we couldn't see the concrete, which is why you recommended a power wash." He then changed his story and said that the gardeners always collect any dirt and haul it away. In the interest of having a reasonable conversation, I even tried to give Garden Care the benefit of the doubt by saying that there may have been some dirt already present in the drain from previous years, but that the gardening work likely exacerbated the problem. From his dismissive tone and language, it was easy to tell that he was more interested in defending his company at any cost rather than trying to figure out what happened. While Garden Care SF may do good gardening work, I hope and expect for work that is not going to cause a different problem in my house. A good $300 clean up was not worth the few hundred additional dollars that I had to pay to unclog my storm drain. read more

Flavio and his team are very good at what they do - with some notable caveats. I have used Flavio to lay down bark and weedcover on 3 properties of mine and briefly used him for regular maintenance. The good: - He is a very personable and friendly guy - He has a great crew of people who are responsible and work very hard - He stays on time with his work and delivers the end product when promised - He was able to fit us in pretty promptly The bad: - Pricing was inconsistent and he does not offer much transparency with his bids. Unlike other landscapers who would give me dimensions of the work area with each bid and a price per unit of area, Flavio just told me how much it would cost. This works until you start comparing multiple jobs. There were several instances where I had Flavio essentially doing the same work on two different properties of similar size without much explanation for why the second job came in several hundred dollars more. - Pricing for fencework also came in highest compared to other bids from similar companies. This is of course common sense that you will need to look around for bids, but a good word of caution that you might not be getting as good of a deal as you think. - I have mixed feelings regarding the quality of his work as all of the yards I have had him lay down weed covering on also have weeds growing through now. It seems to be much more than I would have expected from weeds growing through open seams. My request to talk with him about this several months out from job completion was never answered. All in all, I would still recommend Garden Care SF as an option if you are considering landscaping and gardening work. read more

Flavio and Garden Care SF deserve the 5 stars everyone is giving them. This is a long review, which I rarely give, but felt it was much deserved in this case. I had another gardener "design, install and maintain" my front yard, but they didn't seem to know what they were doing, so it was just an overgrown mess with a lot of gopher/mole holes and weeds. I contacted Flavio a week ago and unlike some other gardeners / landscapers I contacted and had to wait for days to return my call, he picked up his phone immediately and made arrangements to come out on the weekend to review my proposed projects: (1) front yard clean up and (2) a backyard landscape project. Flavio was able to give me a quote that day on the front yard project and said they could start the following week. The cost was very reasonable for the amount of work, which included, significant trimming of overgrown / dying plants (including a giant bougainvillea), installation of wire mesh and tarp to prevent gophers/moles from coming through and weed growth (my previous gardener failed do either of these basic things when he installed the original garden), wood barrier around the yard (as my previous ground cover kept spilling out into the sidewalk), and laying down new ginger rock cover. For the ginger rock, my previous gardener had put down some pebble sized ginger rock which kept getting blown away, so Flavio recommended larger ones to avoid that problem. Flavio and his team worked HARD (from about 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.), stayed within budget, and now my front yard looks presentable again for that "curb appeal." Flavio suggested things that seem like common sense now, but which my previous gardener didn't do (i.e., wire mesh to keep out gophers, tarp underneath ground cover to prevent weeds, wood barrier on the perimeter to keep ground cover from spilling onto sidewalk, larger rocks to prevent them from blowing away). Great communication, good prices, quick, hard working, knowledgeable are all things that come to mind with Flavio and his team. On the backyard project, Flavio and I are still communicating on an estimate, but one awesome thing he did for me was refer one of his friends to demolish an old deck in the yard FOR FREE (he needed the recycled wood for a barn) in preparation for a potential backyard paver installation. Another contractor came out and estimated it would cost me approx. $900-1000 for the demo, so this saved me $$ on this project already! Thanks Flavio! read more

Flavio and his crew saved our dogs from our ever escalating backyard nightmares in just 5 days. Thanks to California's long term drought and our laziness, crazy weed called foxtail almost killed our dog! Plus, our fences were falling apart so that our dogs, neighbors' cats and homeless raccoons trespass and get into fights in the middle of the nights!
