We had a great experience working with RB Landscaping. After shopping around, they were the only ones who said they would be able to complete a curved Saltillo/ Terracotta path. We hashed out the details with Nate over email. Our area was 8.5 feet by 21.5 feet and involved digging out the subgrade, setting concrete and rebar, tiles (including a curved path), and gravel. We set the construction date for February 19th which lasted until February 25th. Jesus, the foreman, was great at communicating the steps required for the build. He would often check in to make sure that we got the end product we desired and was receptive to feedback for the design. With their workmanship guarantee, we have nothing to worry about. Got a few bids and there's was the most reasonable and most knowledgeable. We had a channel drain installed in front of our garage and they were able to finish the project in 2 days and within 3 weeks of our request. Great turnaround time!! Price was reasonable and they didn't try to force us to spend more than we needed to. Jesus and his team made sure my husband and I were involved in every step of the process. He explained his concerns and what they were going to do to try to fix it. He even came back after the project was done the next day to make sure it was installed correctly and he checked the drainage multiple times with a hose. After interviewing more than 6 landscaping contractors, we chose them because their quote was competitive and their proposal was by far one of the most thorough and transparent. They transformed both our front and backyard, including removing grass, installing artificial turf and mulch, adding concrete walkways, grinding roots of a large stump, and building two retaining walls in our sloped backyard. Hands down the BEST contractor we've had the pleasure of working with. They are super responsive, efficient, transparent and straightforward, honest, competitively priced, skilled, and FAST. I interviewed 3 other landscapers around the bay area and went with RB mainly for price and responsiveness. We redid our backyard and front yard, changing out grass for pavers and cement, redoing our patio and entrance pathway, and replacing some plants. They even helped to build some sheds we got at Costco. We had a pretty straightforward design in mind so we didn't need a lot of help there, but RB provided some nice recommendations that were cost effective and efficient/realistic for the space. They can help with some light design suggestions. I probably have over 200 email exchanges with Nate, with half of them being questions. The amount of patience they had with me is astounding (lol)! Every question was answered with helpful, realistic, and thoughtful responses, along with options. I can't tell you how much peace and confidence this level of communication gave me. The main work was done in less than two weeks, and some light finishing touches took a few days. The crew worked hard and fast, even on weekends--early mornings and late evenings, and during the hottest week... They also wait until they have all the materials before they start actual work, so good to choose materials that are in stock to speed up your project. They were also scheduling about 2 months out so lock them down sooner than later. We are so happy with the end result and cannot recommend them enough. Within the last month, RB Landscaping has constructed a five foot block retaining wall and hogwire fence along my front driveway. I hired this company because they had excellent reviews and their estimate was quite fair, certainly lower than others I received. The workers, led by an extremely helpful, smiling Gustavo, showed up on the assigned date, completing the retaining wall project in six straight days. It seemed that they worked from sunup to sunset. I've never seen a construction crew work so hard. In our minds, as well as our neighbors, the finished product was "a work of art". What a difference from our forty-seven year old ivy-covered, rotten wood wall. Next, the fence above the wall was constructed with the same determination and skill. RB is the best contractor I've had the pleasure working with. They have everything perfected and will beautify the whole Bay Area over time. Our work scope was large: 6 weeks - paver patio, driveway, walkway; reallocating sloped side yard into backyard with stone retaining wall; new lawns, landscaping, irrigation; new parts of fence and gates; composite deck; wired low-voltage lighting; installed new pergola. The people: Nate in the office is very responsive; we worked with an external designer and Nate was able to turnaround an estimate within a day - other competitors took weeks. Ramiro (the owner) gives great advice on design features during the estimate meeting. And then there's Gustavo (our foreman) who was the heart of our project. Gustavo perfectly planned our project and executed the work to perfection. Pricing: Excellent, competitive pricing and transparent. No change orders were initiated from RB. All change orders came from me and they provided quick, transparent prices. As long as you let them know at the beginning or middle of a phase to allow them to properly plan schedule-wise, they're more than happy to accommodate additional requests. Scheduling/time: RB is very busy, but they have so many crews and are so efficient that they were able to get our big project scheduled within 2 months. Scheduling is where RB shines the most. They never want to be behind schedule. If they feel like they're falling behind, they keep working harder... Gustavo and his crew arrived early in the morning and left very late everyday, and often through weekends. All of our project phases were finished on time. Work quality/communication: despite the efficiency, quality was excellent. Like all contractors there are issues, but Gustavo more than willingly took feedback daily and fixed things the correct way (no blaming the customer and no shortcuts!). What I appreciated was being able to have a conversation with the crew on how things were being done and it really felt like a contractor-customer team effort. Other: the crew is so respectful of neighbors. They're able to gauge what type of noise level and at what times neighbors would tolerate noise. When I hired RB Landscaping to renovate my backyard, I didn't realize I would have to act as the general contractor, but that's sort of what happened. I guess I shouldn't be all that surprised, since they came in as the lowest of three landscaper bids (based on a plan I had procured from a separate landscape designer). I do have to give RB kudos for their scheduling. Once I agreed to their bid, they gave me a start date (over a month away) and they actually showed up on that very day with a trailer and tools. Semi-amazing. During the actual renovation. I was peppered with questions every morning, including some details clearly explained on the plan; which I pointed out. (Note: They didn't bring a copy; I actually had to print it out for them). In fact, there were so many questions and decisions that I ended up staying home from work for a few extra mornings. The plus side: I did know everything that was going on. Talking to the RB Office was like speaking to a different company. Though always friendly, Nate routinely insisted the crew had everything under control, whether they did or not. Before the job started, I asked about a soil-depth issue in one spot that would prevent cement pours (as noted by another bidding landscape firm). He insisted that our yard had already been checked; it was no problem; and they would simply adjust the cement block sizes. During the job, however, the crew found that cement was impossible without cutting major tree roots. And so we changed the plan to stepping stones (a notion that had been dismissed by Nate in my earlier question). He also made a major overcharge error ($1300) in the final bill, which I caught, though I don't think it was intentional. But It wasn't all bad. The landscaping crew were friendly, skilled, and very hard-working. They showed up and left each day at consistent times and always cleaned up. They were flexible with a few "surprises" that popped up. And they finished in exactly two weeks as promised (though they were very hurried at the end, failing to fix one error in the irrigation plan). Most importantly, however, our back yard looks great, and my wife now spends about 300% more time out there than she used to. So if you're on a tighter budget and don't mind being extra-involved with all the yard decisions, RB may be the right pick for you. If you would prefer to be totally hands-off and have the yard just "happen" you may want to go somewhere a little higher-end (as long as you're willing to pay a bit more). read more

We had a few changes and lots of questions, but Nate was always able to answer everything and was understanding throughout the whole process. The foreman that worked on our backyard was Jesus. He was good and helpful when it came to the construction of our project. When we asked them to come back to look at something, they did so without any issues. The reason I can't give the 5 stars is because they weren't perfect. Communication during construction could have been better. The grading did not get built as originally discussed. Schedule related things were not always clear and I felt like we had to constantly ask questions to ensure things were on track. Our house was used to store material for other projects, and they actually almost forgot to take it with them at the end of the project until we reminded them. Luckily we have the space for it, but I wasn't particularly pleased with that. Our 2023 Home Improvement Project was completed last week! Here is additional context on what we were doing. First, our house is on a downslope of a hill so sections of our backyard fence leaned due to all the water from the recent atmospheric rivers. Second, we bought our house in 2016 so it was time to redo the previous owners' " stylistic " choices. Lastly, I wanted our house to be more carbon neutral so I had Semi Dwarf Meyer Lemon Trees planted. Aside, I thought when you bought a tree it came as 6-8 feet, not 3-4 feet. Though a small backyard, there were a lot of moving pieces and the backyard looks great. The strong pros were: bid was competitive and thorough, great communication with Nate ('home office') and Ramiro (owner) leading up to and during the project, project came in within a few hundred dollars of the initial bid and finished on time, team of 5 (led by foreman Jorge) came every day on time, worked all day, left everything clean, respectful, asked lots of questions/wanted everything to be as we wanted. I would work with RB again and recommend them, but caveat I found it very helpful to be home during the entirety of the project to ensure everything was going to plan and do quality control, as well as do some trouble shooting when things didn't go to plan. From a craftsmanship perspective I would not say this is the most perfect work, but they also did not bid as the most expensive. read more
