I needed a bed along the fence converted to a proper raised bed. Cesar was prompt in reviewing and giving a quote. Then scheduled it quickly. In the end, he recommended making it a ground-level bed with a retaining wood barrier behind (my neighbor's side yard is higher than mine). His team worked really hard, especially as there turned out to be a huge root and stump that I had no idea was there (and which was expensive to remove). He also put in a new side gate as the existing one was so old as to be unusable. I am pleased with the result, and especially pleased to have had the work completed so soon and so quickly. read more

Update: After having no luck of getting hold of anyone in this company for many months, I hired another landscape company, thinking it could simply be ground movement causing the pavers to collapse. With the other company, as they were working in the garden, we discovered that 1) the retaining wall for all 3 tiers( with one tier supporting surrounding fence as well ) were curving, creating the gap on the edges. We spent $$ to add additional post between existing posts, instead of every 4 feet, we have a post every 2 feet now. 2) Our base-rocks was only 2-3". In our contract with Bloom and Lawn Landscape, it was supposed to be 5". Instead of paying additional $15000++ to fix this problem, somehow, miracles happened that I managed to get hold of Joel, the owner. He came with his new hire, Cesar to evaluate the problem. It seemed that Cesar responded to "my email", except he did not send it to me but only to his own team. I don't know what went wrong in the initial work. I decided not to pursue , we just want the repair done. Too much time and money wasted already. As per today, all the pavers and tuff have been reset. No original ground was removed, but instead they compacted existing ground, and they brought in more base rocks to top up. I did not get to check if it went up to supposedly 5" , I hope they are honest this time. Initially, the crew came once a week, on Saturdays to do the repair, so it took them over a month to complete our garden. After the 3rd Saturday, they came on weekdays too. It could have been done in 6 days. I was getting frustrated, I had to clean the pathway to garden almost every weekend in July after the crew left! I am giving 3 stars because they did a good job to reset the pavers . The crew are courteous and careful enough not to damage our interior ( backyard is lower than basement, with only entrance at street level). Cesar is responsive to my text messages and professional. I do think they are good at what they are doing. I have respect for the crews, not an easy job to be working outdoors in hot sun and strong winds, or foggy cold days. All and all, I am just glad that this is over. Now I just need to repair all the badly scratched up wood planks of retaining wall and wood stairs! read more

This company comes highly recommended. Joel and his staff are very professional. Communication was excellent throughout the course of construction. They managed to complete the project in a timely manner with no long delays throughout the project milestones. Joel did not hesitate to ask questions to make sure we resolved issues that were not clearly detailed in the landscape architects drawing and offering advice on what he recommends. Joel did an excellent job of capturing the changes and adds to the project both in scope and cost. His staff left the job site safe and clean everyday. What can I say.. I grew up in the trades in SF and the Bay Area and know when a company has pride in their work, cares for their employees, and treats their customers with respect. Joel, Cesar, and the whole Bloom team check these boxes in every way. Bloom has done such a great job with our projects. We have excavated the backyard, added multiple retaining walls to the front and back including finish cedar fencing. I would not recommended doing this anywhere but I took ideas with no drawings and described what I wanted to do with to the Bloom team and they had no problems bringing the structural and design visions to life. Our interactions with Bloom and Lawn Landscaping have been an odd and disappointing experience. We have a small backyard that requires hardscaping and landscaping work. We were excited to find Bloom and Lawn because they advertise doing both, and that was hard to find. We texted with Andrea in mid-March to set up a consultation with Joel. Joel came to our house and provided great guidance - he shared that they could complete the job within our budget. For next steps, he instructed that we would set up a meeting with Spears, their designer. We never heard from Spears, so I texted back and forth with Andrea to check on the status of meeting with Spears, and he did not reach out to us. B&L essentially ghosted us after that. I sent a few messages in May and June to potentially move the project forward, and never received any responses. There is no answer on the phone listed on their website, and the voicemail is not set up. Don't waste your time reaching out. read more

Joel and his team were awesome and I couldn't be happier with their work. As background, we had about 250 sq ft of lawn that got infested with gophers, which transformed our lawn from beautiful to severely dilapidated. After making the decision to turf, we called several places and Joel's rate was the most competitive. For our estimate appointment, he was punctual, professional and honest. He even had all the turf samples in his truck which allowed us to experience how each type of turf looked and felt. This helped a lot b/c my wife and I were able to agree on the one we like the best (always a win!). His team came by today to take out the old lawn and replace with the turf. There was a team of 5 or 6 who got to work right away. They took 4" of topsoil, placed different grades of gravel in and installed gopher netting. They even capped the old sprinkler lines and put a tan bark/mulch at the base of a tree and our bougainvillea. One thing to note is while they were digging up my old lawn, they hit the water main to our next door neighbor's house, but quickly addressed the issue by shutting off the water, informing our neighbors and then replacing the old pipe with premium copper pipe. Sent pictures, sent exactly what we needed, sent all my info. Then, try to schedule a meet with Joel, then...silence? Texted again to follow up, nothing. Been 6 days since my last text and no response yet. Look, if you don't need the business, just be upfront about it, don't waste people's time who are trying to keep things local. If you hire Bloom and Lawn, be prepared for poor communication, extend your timelines out by a factor of four, be prepared to be constantly let down. As other reviewers have stated, Joel was extremely prompt with a site visit and estimate, and was the most impressive of the landscape companies to came out to look at our project. However, the moment we started to seriously engage with B+L and get designs, specifics, timelines, etc, we couldn't get the time of day from him. Emails and texts would go unanswered for days and weeks, and the occasional commitments of times/drawings/answers would come and go by weeks as well. I was often told what I suspect were lies, like he was working without service all week. Even if this were the truth (5% likelihood), please leave someone to communicate with your customers. By this point, we were too far in with B+L, and as frustrating as it was, we stuck the course because to start the process would have delayed us even more. The most frustrating thing about the whole process was the lack of acknowledgement and apology from Joel. I personally switched my work schedule multiple times to accommodate appointments and pours, often confronted with no-shows and no communication. We never got acknowledgement and apology from Joel, not even once, though conveyed to his office manager how frustrated we were. Our simple project dragged on almost three months. The $600 plan we paid for came 1.5 weeks late, was incorrect to our specs, had no measurements, seemed hastily made, and ultimately got tossed out the window once work started. Once the work started, his foreman and workers were great and friendly, the quality of the work was 85% good, things were left a little rough around the edges. I have a feeling Joel is in over his head with too many projects, too many crews, and not enough organization or time management skills. It might ultimately be his downfall, though demand in SF is crazy. The cherry on top was a deck his crew built (nicely), where he told me that "sealing is not included", then asked for the rest of his money. Every time I've had deck/stair work done, sealing Is included. It's like a car sold without tires. Our project is mercifully done, but it dragged on too long, and if you value your time and like to be treated respectfully, I'd head elsewhere. read more

I have just completed the first phase of my back yard renovation project and am so pleased with the work performed by Joel and his team. All the vegetation needed to be cleared out and a retaining wall completely replaced. My yard is on a slope, and I now have a staircase providing easy access to each terrace. Joel and Cesar were a great help converting my somewhat vague ideas into reality. The estimate was reasonable, and I appreciated that they were able to start work without a long lead time. There were several workers in and out, depending on the needs of the project, and all worked hard. They were careful of the access through my garage. Bloom and Lawn Landscape did an incredible job installing permeable pavers in our front yard in San Francisco. Because of the permanent drought, we had let the lawn go brown. We needed another solution. Plus we had a severely cracked cement driveway that needed to be replaced. After talking with Denton Bullard at CalStone and visiting the CalStone showroom, we decided to install CalStone permeable pavers plus several raised cement planting boxes with a stucco finish to match our home. Denton recommended Bloom and Lawn Landscape. Please note that MOST landscaping contractors do NOT know how to install them properly. They do not use the proper bedding material, they do not put the proper material between the pavers, and they seal them so they are not permeable. They do not have the proper equipment to tamp down the bedding material. These companies will say they will install permeable pavers, but the final product simply isn't permeable. Joel Lopez from Bloom and Lawn Landscape with whom we negotiated the contract was always friendly and available. The foreman on the job named Raul was a perfectionist. He handled the complex installation including creating the proper slopes and angles perfectly. Bloom and Lawn Landscape has all the technical know-how and equipment to do the installation properly.
