My car broke down and I had it towed here since it was close. They are nice, but it's a veneer. They installed a new part without me giving permission to do any repairs (I didn't even know what the issue was until they had replaced it), charged me 400$, and the car broke down a week later. I took it to the dealer and lo-and-behold the issue was completely software related that cost nothing to fix. They refused to refund me. Don't trust Brian from gearhead! read more

On a Friday afternoon, the owner (i think) of the shop did a quick review and gave me all kinds of advice on which repairs were necessary and which were not. I mentioned that I was interested in getting rid of the car and he also advised which repairs were necessary before trading in, where to do the trade in and which cars to consider replacing it with. Its always difficult to find a good auto mechanic, especially if you've moved from out of state! I took a recently purchased used vehicle here for an oil change and the experience from calling to make an appt to driving away after completion was top notch! I even asked if they could remove a rusted bike hitch from the bumper and they did that at no extra cost! They go the extra mile for customer service without a doubt. I spoke with one of the owners and learned a bit of the history of their shop and got to see some of their projects and much nicer cars. Very friendly staff, and professional service. Their garage is entirely indoors, with two floors, something you'd expect to see in Europe, which goes well with their European car specialization. I had a really annoying electrical problem with my '04 530i for almost 2 years. The cluster would light up with errors, a continuous error chime and the speedometer and tach needles would go crazy. Been to countless mechanics and specialists who never took the time to really track down the issue and solve it, apart from putting in a new battery or alternator. Brian and his techs took the dash apart completely and found that a bad wire behind LCD monitor was to blame for all the issues I've been dealing with, he gave me a reasonable quote for repairs with used parts that saved me a ton of money. These guys are great. Unfortunately, our two cars haven't cooperated with us lately and I have been to three different auto-servicing shops. Two large dealerships and Gear Heads. Gear Heads is the best, by far. Two main differentiating factors. 1. Trustworthiness: this is the first auto-repair shop where I felt they knew exactly what needed to be done, explained it very well and explained the costs. They told me stuff that could be fixed, but wasn't urgent and could wait to see if it got worse. Honestly the first time I felt like I got a square deal leaving an auto repair shop. 2. customer service and going the extra mile: These guys went, literally, out of their way in the freezing cold to help me out. When I asked if they could help me, their response was "we always do whatever we can to help people out, let me see if anyone is free and what we can do". Bonus: Their front office guys are organized and very helpful. All around - they run a great business. I just moved to the area and I am lucky I stumbled on them. I was planning on buying a car there for my 3 high school aged daughters. The car was priced right and Brian was very fair and easy to work with. When I took the car to my mechanic he said the car was in good shape and validated that it was a good car. My issue was that my wife thought the sporty GTI was too quick and too small for our beginner drivers- and reluctantly I brought the car back after I told Brian I was going to buy. He couldn't have been better and was very understanding with my mind change... When I picked it up, the leak wasn't what they anticipated and the cost was several hundred dollars less that what I approved. Use caution. I brought my car in for a oil change, brake fluid flush, tire rotation along with troubleshooting another issue. They had it for the entire day and only complete an oil change and said they rotated the tires. They never called me...I had to call them at 3:30p that day and ask what's up?. I don't think they got anything else done. Day 2... brake flush and other issue couldn't be solved. Again I had to call them. I picked up the car that evening. The next day I checked my tires if the were rotated. They weren't. I wonder if anything was done.?. I won't be going back. read more

Called back and spoke to some dude named Brian, who was rude as hell. I went somewhere else and was quoted $450 for something this place quoted for $900. Ridiculous...sounds to me they are so busy they don't need anymore costumers....have no idea how they had time to tow or even help the guy below me out when they are that busy... I have walked my dog by GEARHEADS' 1000 times and had never taken any of my cars there. About 1 month ago I took my BMW 5 series to a major BMW dealership and was told I had an oil leak that was going set me back $2300+ to fix. The hard press was on to get this supposed oil leak repaired. Instead I decided to get a second opinion. I tried GEARHEADS as they advertised specializing in repairing German cars (really repair all cars) and a neighbor recommended them. Best move I could have made. Low and behold there was no oil leak as I suspected. I then decided to have some routine maintenance done there. They explained what and why they were doing things, gave me a quote upfront, and were just some of the nicest and most knowledgeable people to deal with. They performed the service expeditiously and as promised. Now I know why they do such good business. Top notch people and mechanics make this shop one of if not the best I have ever gone to. Gearhead came recommended to us after our BMW X5 died in our driveway with a dashboard that was lit up like a Christmas tree. We called them yesterday evening an hour before they closed and was told to have it towed there and they would look at it first thing in the morning. They called an hour after they opened and said it was a dead battery. We had them put in an OEM one, reset all the electronics and paid a fair price for this fix. Brought my Series 3 BMW in because it had a bad catalytic converter. Repair estimate for that issue and others issues they promised to repair (such as driver side window not automatically going up when button pushed) etc. was $3000. After almost a week I picked up the car and the damn catalytic converter had not even been worked on! Then they claimed they needed $800 more to fix that. These guys did a great job! I brought in my 2014 FJ Cruiser to have some accessory items installed this week. They were able to install a custom grill kit, super bright LED lights, an electrical switch panel and some nice loud horns. There is no doubt in my mind that some of the reviews you will read below are fake. I emailed my request to contact me before any repairs I made only to receive a phone call that the repair was already made for "testing" purposes. In other words, you are bullied into paying for the repair that you never authorized in the first place. You will also be informed that any repair authorized by the insurance company is automatically made without your knowledge or consent. The idea that you as the customer have the ultimate authority where and when to repair your vehicle is completely lost on them. In short, if you like having to take your car to the repair shop multiple times for the same issue and paying for different parts and labor as the process of elimination unfolds, finding out the cost of the repair after the repair is completed, and car parts being sent off to a different repashop without your knowledge or consent, then this is the repair shop for you. I wanted to try a local repair shop again vs. going to the dealer in Schaumburg for my 60K service and trying to avoid excessive dealer service cost. I tried Gearheads again after they did some ok work on my old bug many years ago. They were able to take my car in on a days notice, called me with the cost and finished when promised. All good except the cost was only about $50 less than the dealership which actually did one additional procedure for the 60k. I could have refused the service and tried another shop as they did tell me the cost upfront but I wanted it done, they have mostly good reviews and a good reputation in the neighborhood. I had some minor issues with my Audi...headlight, indicators and a couple of fuses were out. I know if I would've taken it to the Audi dealer it would've cost me a lot of time and money!!! Just moved to the area and I usually work on my own vehicles, but I was looking for a shop that I could trust to do the repairs I don't want to do or can't do myself. I've driven past them several times so I decided to give them a call. By the signs out front I thought all they did was work on foreign cars, not so. I called and told them I had a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport that needed a rear main seal, oil pan gasket, and oil filter adapter gasket replaced, they told me to bring it on in.
