Assistant manager, Julio is great. He has amazing customer service. A cashier accused me of using counterfeit currency and embarrassed me. Didn't use the currency check pen. Julio said he would address it. He was extremely apologetic, genuinely. That's why I come back to Gelson's after that incident. I'm hoping no one else ever has to be discriminated like that again. I shop at the 99 cent store and have used big bills. They just use the pen and don't make comments. Their poke is great. Way fresher than Whole Foods poke and it's very sanitary. The employees throughout the store are kind and helpful. I had someone walk me across the store to find an item. I like Gelson's because they have regular people brands such as Oreos,Kix, Regular ole milk in gallons. You can't and won't find Oreos and other brands at Whole Foods or sprouts. I noticed this new Gelson's weeks ago and finally got a chance to check it out. There weren't many customers when I went, but it was early. The manager greeted me as I entered. The store is very nice with a good selection of items and products. Indeed, their prices are high, but that's a well-known fact about Gelson's. I used to go to the Marina del Rey location many years ago. They have a lot of appetizing prepared food, deli food, cheeses, sushi, etc. They also have the Viktor Benes bakery counter that all Gelson's have with colorful cakes, pastries, and baked goods. This new Gelson's may not be the place to buy your regular/everyday groceries, but it is worth a visit. read more

Honestly love the one in Los Feliz & WeHo better. We're used to being the minority (Rickey B put it well, as for color of bread, we're the wheat out of the fair crop Lol) but here in MB & El Segundo for that matter they make sure to make us feel not at home or try to mk us feel out of place. Whatever, moneys all the same as far as I'm concerned. So we go here because I love their coffee and didn't see the one I like (found it in Century City) it's dark roast like the Organic House blend, which I ended up getting. Walked around and saw lots of employees standing by ready to assist. Not one of them acknowledged or offered to help us, but they talked to & helped the other people in front and behind us. This included people like us, go figure? It's like Edward James Olmos said in a movie once, you get it from both sides, Lol. Well we honestly go for the quality of items, not the people which I can give a rats pootie. The items look good, but not the same as the other Gelson's I mentioned above. Besides we got Lazy Acres & Whole Foods to go to. I'll come here for the coffee, & some items, but that's about it. The cashier and the young man who was bagging for us were the only people that were friendly and treated us like valued customers. We even got a free bag :). Absolutely the rudest, most unfriendly cashier I've EVER grocery shopping. I Said "hello" - no response/ No eye contact. I said "Thank-you" - no response. I jokingly said "Wow...sorry you are not having a good day". He nastily answered back "That's who I am". WOW! I've shopped at Gelson's in Encino and Hollywood for years and it has always been a joy. Victor Benes Bakery in Gelson's Market in Manhattan Beach This bakery is FANTASTIC! The quality of the baked goods is superb, fresh and tasty with extraordinary variety and absolutely beautiful cakes and pastries. The only challenge is making a decision with so many wonderful choices. But what truly sets it apart is the customer service. I can't say enough good things about Juan, the manager. For my birthday, my wife surprised me with a unique cake created by Juan, just for me. He knows I love the Chocolate Cigars, (small pastries that are so delicious) and he created a giant one, decorated with chocolate fish because I love fishing. It was amazing! Don't order Christmas dinner here. We had Christmas dinner from Gelsons in Manhattan beach. The prime rib was like tasteless horse meat and the roast turkey was tough and tasteless. The cranberry sauce was very tart. The gravy was inedible. The rolls were good as were the mashed potatoes. For $130 it was very disappointing. Don't do it.. The bakery was good. I liked this Gelson's before the apocalypse, and I like it even more now. If you've never been to a Gelson's before, it's like a smaller Whole Foods that carries a lot more of the mainstream brands. The store is well lit, well stocked, and immaculately maintained. They have the usual market fair along with some household items and an upscale hot/cold deli. Their produce and butcher departments carry more high end products that are a step above in quality. Of course this costs more, but I feel that you do get your money's worth. Now that we're in the middle of shelter in place for Coronavirus, I really appreciate the way they go above and beyond for the customer. When you walk up, there's a staff member to greet you and collect and disinfect the carts. The other staff are still present and very helpful. And of course they're being incredibly friendly and helpful during this very difficult time. I think it's also a testament to the store's management that they are able to operate so seamlessly (or at least present themselves so well to the customer). read more

So appreciate Gelson's continuing outstanding service They were the 4th grocery store I called attempting to find duck breasts for a dinner the same night. Not only did Gelson's meat dept have it, they set aside for me to come and pick up. And then when I cled them back an hour or two later to let them know I found it at a local butcher much closer to my home, they were very friendly about it and even thanked me for calling them to let them know. I have been shopping in Gelson's for 30 years and always relied on the quality and freshness of their products.Regardless of their higher price. Unfortunately, that's not the case anymore. Bought seedless organic grapes and they were moldy and rotten. Bought organic pears all were rotten inside. Bought a apricot crumb cake and it was dry/stale. I live in Redondo Beach and drive to the store in Manhattan Beach. So to return items is not easy. If i have to think about shopping there frankly I won't anymore. Really cute grocery store with great customer service. The produce and selection here is fantastic. Although the prices are a bit higher then average, you know you'll be getting something good! With theee EXCEPTION of store associate, Chris, who cashed me out (kinda hot...not gonna lie), there isn't a polite, helpful, well mannered employee on staff. $170.00 sale...and yet treated as though I should thank them I think it's piped in to all locations because MDR is not only exactly the same but WORSE!! This place is a treat for any foodie, even if you're on a budget. My grammy convinced me to come in less than a month ago and so many items stay on my mind, even though I'm supposed to be on a diet. Anyway, upon entering you have to grab a cookie. So far, the lemon blueberry and chocolate chunk pretzel alone are worth breaking most diets. Kiddies can grab a complimentary piece of fruit. Wing lovers who want something out of the ordinary should check out the blueberry balsamic wings. Not sweet or too tangy but definitely in a class by itself. There are other varieties in the self-serve hot deli but this item and the cold lobster bisque are the standouts. The other deli is very helpful and while the seafood section isn't cheap, I like the build-your-own poke bar. The juice bar and produce section are decent but it would be nice to see an expansion. Last evening, I ran into the ultimate garlicky guilty pleasure. The bakery put out hot bread ideal for making bruschetta. Not only did I have to have more but placed an order. Juan (manager) is nice but I will take his advice and place a phone order in the future because I limit my time in places like thi$. The general manager is also great, as we've encountered him twice and it's nice to see him getting his hands dirty while interacting with customers. Not so nice was Julio G. (cashier). He saw that I had a coupon in my hand but my order was just a dollar and change (literally) below the minimum purchase. I asked him to hold on while I grabbed something from the shelves directly behind me and he charged my card anyway. I got the extra item anyway and ignored his surly attitude. While I'm not happy about this encounter, this place still deserves five stars in my book. read more

There's a reason this place is always empty. All the money they spent creating this store .. I can almost guarantee they won't hit budget and close within a year. Pros: Clean, organized Cons: I'm stunned at the prepared food section ... everything either has dairy, soy, sugar, soybean or canola GROSS .. the only thing I could eat was the grilled chicken. also the hot food section they had a bunch of garbage fried in oil. The raw fish station .. no thanks! Old sitting fish yuck- Prices are outrageous .. they won't ever be able to compete with WF. I can't believe how much they charge for the same brands at Whole Foods which are cheaper. Snob environment .. I think people assume because it's Manhattan beach and everyone is rich that people are stuck up .. and the fact is they are wrong. Locals are chill and low key ...and this place is snob central from the employees and I'm stunned the workers act snobby considering they make minimum wage. Also, I bought meat the other day that was expired. I wasn't mad and didn't make a big deal at al about it but Lori at the counter was pretty unfriendly to me about it. Her response was snippy and well let me ask a manager? You know first off at Trader Joe's, Ralphs or WF they don't question you when you return food .. especially since it was unopened and Gelson's fault for selling me expired meat. Someone needs to train Lori better in customer service. Hello Yelpers! Round two and I thought I would give this another fun try since I was in town. I'll keep social economic views out of my review. Since someone stated that they were hated on in a Rite Aid. I think most Rite Aid stores have a lack of customer service no matter which one you go to. Gelsons, on the other hand, has amazing customer service. Great layout. Super bright place. Very meticulous and very clean. Meats and seafood are pricey, locally sourced items are a plus. Grass fed beef. Prime cuts. You guessed it. They have those rare truffle oils, caviars and private select wines you want here to really show off your bourgeoisie. The pastry is truly delicous. I loved the petit four which reminded me a little of Beirut. Customer service in both the pastry and check out were absolutely immpecable. Smiles and very lovely banter. Price here is a steep one. You can get most but not all of these items in a Bristol Farms or Lazy Acres and still have a warm and cuddly time in their warm glow and rustic atmosphere. Gelsons seems to be opening more locations. I hope they do get a chance to hang in there. But in this time of age where convenience and value is key. This place sits very well above that level. The location here is ideal for them since it serves a boutique style of products. Your car will be secure. They have private security for the parking lot and EV charging for you, That's a big plus! So step out of your comfort zone and come on in and shop. Give it a try at least once if you can afford it. Bring about 100$ to purchase some cool treats you discover to really experience it right. Fancy new market in El Segundo that reminds me of Bristol Farms, just not as comfy. Don't get me wrong, the place is clean and well-organized and the staff are very helpful and friendly. They even have a make your own Poke Bowl bar and the largest selection of alternative milk selections I've ever seen. However, items are rather pricy for what you get compared to a TJ's or a Sprouts. If they're trying to compete with Bristol Farms, good job. However, unless they have an item no one else has closer to me, that would be the only reason I'll be shopping here. read more

This Gelsons is to be avoided if you don't want to jeopardize your health to workers who use no gloves when serving and actually one was holding her snot rag with her ungloved hands inside the p!ate that I requested a macaroni and cheese sample from with thumb inside the plate...reported it to burly manager the other day he could care less as the same for the CEO of the company telling me it wasn't a law they wear gloves it's their choice...during grand opening.....I beg to differ.....germs are under the nail and gloves are for the protection of the customers......equally ungloved was workers in the bakery putting cakes in boxes with no gloves and another lady giving a dirty apple to a customer that she cut....no gloves......with dirty knife I'm sure who said she just wiped the apple but did not wash it and ran away when I told her she needs to wash it that's disgusting.... read more

I came in here excited to roam around and throw a bunch of stuff in my cart. Not sure if it was because of the Thanksgiving weekend, but I really didn't find anything that interested me. This Gelson's felt more like a sterile surgery room for some reason. Maybe sometime I'll try out the tapas and wine bar. read more

Always love going to Gelson's. This one is new and will hopefully figure out how to operate better. It is small, but the food selection is better than other Gelson's. The hot food was terrible, though. It was the worst lasagna that I have ever had. It tasted metallic / burnt in some parts (I wasn't having a stroke). It was not up the normal quality I have always experienced at other Gelson's. The people are nice, but the ready-made food needs improvement and will hopefully improve over time. I like the store itself, but the professionalism of Dennis. Well it is questionable. The other day not only was he saying some awful things about one of his cashiers. He was comparing two of them, while stating that one of them is better, has a better car, and gets payed better. Everything was said loud to their face. Making the rest of us customers uncomfortable. He is rude and very unprofessional. His comments were made after this lady (costumer) asked which cashier was better.
