Overall Gelson's is a nice shopping experience and very well managed. The selection of food is very good with a lot of premium selections but the prices are very high. I normally prefer shopping at local or at least not national chains but the price premium is a little too much. The bartender Otto at the bar is a great guy who is very engaging. I just left Gelson's very confused and upset. I was stopped July 29th about my service dog and told that she was not allowed to enter I told the cart handler I had recently been there with her the day before on July 28th. He said they are not allowed, I was confused but said "oh okay" and walked away, with out any argument. My dog is small and has a carrier but she is a registered service dog and not emotional support dog. The day of July 29th I only needed to grab one thing so after being stopped I set a 7minute timer and left her in my vehicle while I grabbed it. Since then I have visited the store without my dog, and without complaining about being stopped. Today, the cart handler who had stopped me on the 29th approached me after I finished my shopping to show me a sign and talk to me about a review that was posted about him stopping people with animals in bags. I do not know why he was stopping me, I did not have my dog. Nor, did I leave the review. This is my review. I do not know if he was stopping me because it's easily to identify me in this area because I am a young black woman. But, I do think it was extremely unprofessional to stop me to talk about a review online. I was confused, but decided to call into the store to inform them of this strange behavior. I eventually walked back into the store where the manager discussed the issue with me, that the man is not racially bias and then asked me if I worked for some food carrier service and tried to give me some coupons. I am very confused by this entire situation and I hope it doesn't happen to anyone else, it is very disappointing because Gelson's is my favorite local grocery store and is very clean when it comes to covid. I don't care if that employee continues to work there, just tell him I am not stupid, I can read signs, and I don't think you should be policing customers who are not breaking any of the store laws. Friendly and helpful crew and managers. Hard to beat the quality of fruit and produce but it can be painfully expensive. In a nutshell, everything is pricey here. We shouldn't shop here frequently but it's convenient and we do major grocery shopping elsewhere. It's so hard to resist the deli, hot food, freshly roasted turkey, brisket, and prime rib that's made everyday. One thing that needs improvement is the Victor Benes bakery. Some days the cakes are dry and taste old. Staff always seems bothered when you get up there to order. Guess that's why it's not called Gelsons Bakery. read more

NOT AGAIN!! It's not the first time i found expired yogurt in this market. Expired 5 days ago???? Another issue. This was how i stopped going there. You will find a piece of plastic on meat especially high quality such as grass fed beef or organic chickens. The package is green so it is easy to notice i'm not sure about other package but it must be same or lower quality i guess since it's cheaper..Oh beef is hard to notice since due to color... Good luck. I've been living this area for 11yrs and i was regular but not anymore.. Wow, no thank you! Came here for a quick shopping trip and was thoroughly disappointed. First of all, everything is 10 to 20 percent more expensive than at a Vons (which is already price-gouging.) But then you don't even get high quality goods or service. Had to pick up three apples before finding one that wasn't bruised or rotten. All the lines were closed except one, with employees milling about. The cashier was rude and barely said a word to me while bagging. And the total was $30 for cereal, milk, two apples, a single yogurt, a single small probiotic and popcorn. Go across the street to TJs for better service, food and prices. The prices at this Gelson's are extraordinarily high. There's a Trader Joe's right across the street and a 365 Whole Foods about a 1/2 mile away. I plan to start shopping there. I would be willing to pay higher prices if the service was good but it's deplorable. Tonight, there were two check out lines open and there were 15 people waiting with grocery carts in each line. The assistant manager sitting at the service desk was completely oblivious. The cashiers are actually surly. Not friendly. Lots of attitude. There is just no value in shopping here. I'm tired of paying exceptional prices and getting poor service. You'll be shocked at the prices if it's your first time. read more

I ordered some food online and the shopper replaced one of the items I ordered. It was a yogurt smoothie. I ordered Stonyfield yogurt smoothies but got replaced with Chobani, when I said no subs! Also, we ordered two plant dish soaps. Please tell your drivers to stop replacing orders or only giving us one of the items when we ordered two. Stop deciding our orders for us, just because it's not the popular item like Greek yogurt is! Your store is the only place where I can get Stonyfield yogurt. Gelson's is the ultimate neighborhood grocery store. You come here to get fresh food and see familiar faces who know you personally and who have been working here for many many years. The manager and staff here are lovely and not fake lovely, they are genuinely lovely. While Whole Foods can't seem to keep key food in stock to save their lives (a phenomenon that seems to have started since Jeff Bezos bought the store), Gelson's always has everything you expect them to have. I always wonder how it is that they never run out of key food. They must know exactly how to run a grocery store. read more

This is the best Gelson's in all of LA. A few years ago an ex and I visited LA and shopped here. I was blown away...in lust. We would soon move to Silverlake and enjoy this location as "our Gelson's." I now live on the westside and will still (traffic permitting) travel to this location. Today I was able to get a beef femur bone (I know, it's gross until you own a dog) fresh and cut to my specifications! The meat department guys were so friendly and made one little Shiba very happy. I've lived in Silver Lake for a LONG time and, after being a steady Gelsons customer for many, many years (20 years?), I was not a fan of the renovations a few years back (wine bar, smaller produce section, less groceries, more prepared food). I continued to shop here out of convenience until I couldn't take the increase in price and the decrease in overall quality and poor attitude of the employees. I visited the store last night (2/15/21) after a really long 12 hour day at work. It was around 8p and I wanted to pick up a cake for my husband's bday and a few other items before going home. Gelsons was on my way home. I will never step foot in this place ever again. The customer service was horrible and the food I bought (sushi) was inedible. There was only one person in the whole store who was helpful. I wish I got his name. Other than that, there was a man with longish hair (maybe Latino???) who was extremely rude to me when I asked him a question. At first I could not hear him so I asked him to repeat and he got so annoyed. Is this how you treat customers asking for help? This man was strike 1. I went to the bakery department and I waited for 5-7 mins to see if I could get help. There was a young lady cleaning in that area. She never even said can I get someone to help you? She saw me standing there waiting like an idiot. I even walked in her vicinity but she just gave me a look (like don't even think of bothering me). The woman was strike 2. I proceeded to shop for some other items and was never greeted or acknowledged by anyone. I decided I'd just go and pay for the stuff I had and shop at a store where I knew I could get waaayyyyy better service and shopping experience. I stood in line and when I reached the cashier she could care less of having any type of interaction with me. The lady bagging and her continued to have their conversation without so much as a total for my purchase. Strike 3. I thought my horrible experience was over but when I got to my car I wanted to eat my sushi and for the price I paid, I am so mad I had to throw it out. It was the worst sushi I've ver had. I am so mad I spent my hard earned money at this place. I wasted my time here. This was the icing on the cake. I ended up going somewhere else to get my cake and sushi plus more. Sometimes Trader Joe's doesn't address all your shopping needs. Sometimes, you don't want to go to Von's when you've already driven to Hyperion to shop at Trader Joe's. At these times, I will cave and shop at Gelson's. It is remarkable how much more expensive this grocery store is than the others in the neighborhood. Things will be on sale for more than the regular price at Von's. Ingredients for dinner can cause shock at the register. I would never buy eggs here, or flour or butter, or any pantry item really. The price difference is just too high. I will say, though, that it is a nice market, and sometimes you get what you pay for. The produce is very pretty. I've gotten beautiful tomatoes here, and for a recent barbecue I got some delicious corn and peaches. I got around six ears of corn and a few pounds of peaches - came in at something like $25, but they were excellent, I'll give them that. The store is clean and appealing, and it stocks just about anything you might need. Even so, your average grocery trip to Gelson's will yield bad value. Most groceries don't vary too much in quality, so I'm done shopping here to stock up. I may come by for produce now and then, but otherwise, I'll be keeping my distance. read more

Nice produce, huge place, deli counters, great wine selection, friendly checkers who don't even bat an eyelash when you roll up to lane 3 and buy a bottle of Stoli Vodka and some Robittusin Cough Syrup(hey one was for me...cough cough...the other was for a party). I've shopped here for years. Gelsons has been doing fantastic work throughout the pandemic. I want to get their attention because one of their employees was wearing his mask on his chin and mouth but not covering his nose. I said something (that was more colorful than it needed to be) to two other employees at the managers desk, even as the employee in question walked by. Me: (calmly) According to the ADA, he's not required to wear one. Employee: (condescendingly) Did you even read the notice? - regarding dogs? Me: Absolutely .... walks away Manager appears and looks me up and down as if I'm bringing a gun into the store. Manager: Is that a service dog? Me: Yes Manager: Hes not an emotional support dog right? Me: I do not reply Manager: So he's a service dog. Where is his clothing? Identification card? Me: According the the ADA he does not have to wear this, nor do I need to provide documents. Manager: What do you have him for Me: According to the ADA you cannot legally ask this question Manager: Yes I can, what service does he provide Me: Epilepsy Manager: WHAT? Me: Epilepsy Manager: (long pause - rubs hands together) So you look after him and keep him close in the store Me: no response Manager: Ok, you can go. Me: (walks into store) Manager: Proceeds to follow me around (while keeping a noticeable distance) the store. I WILL NEVER RETURN TO THIS STORE. STOP TREATING PEOPLE ... (black ppl) LIKE CRIMINALS... CAUSING A STIR... MAKING ME UNCOMFORTABLE. TREATING ME SUSPICIOUSLY. I JUST WONDER IF A WHITE WOMAN WOULD HAVE BEEN TREATED IN THIS MANNER.
