I used to really like this store but the past two times I've gone I've come home to realize the food I purchased was spoiled. On 09/16/20 I had to call back and let the manager Luis know that the $34 fruit tray I purchased was spoiled. Today on 09/21/20 I opened a thing of president cheese and it smelled SO BAD and was slimy. I've now spent about $50 on spoiled food. Wish I could give it 3.5 stars, but that's life. It's my local store, well that and TJs, but sometimes I get lazy and just walk to Gelson's. They have a unique selection, a few hard to find items, and they are "usually" not busy when I shop there. That said, out of the 70-80 times I've shopped there over the past 3+ years, I'm not sure I've ever been asked once if I need help. More often than not I feel as if I'm bothering the staff. Additionally, the prices are crazy, but as you can see from my statement above, I still continue to shop there; creature of habit I suppose. Maybe I'm just lazy and don't feel like learning a new grocery store layout? Likely. And while the staff seem likable enough, I'm not sure I've ever been to a grocery store where I've roamed the aisles for 25+ minutes while passing 10+ staff members, without a single one asking me if they might be able to assist. Maybe that's not your thing, but I assume with the extra $$$ per item compared to their competitors, they'd likely make it up with customer service? However, if you're in the mood for a live cover band on a Friday night at a wine and beer bar while the loved ones do your shopping for you, consider this your Valhalla. read more

Great place to come if you want fresh Poke that is made daily. There isnt a huge selection but needless to say the price is great for poke $15.99 LB and it tastes great. The staff doesnt know where everything is as i asked for ice since i bought 4lbs of poke figured they can give me a small bag of crushed ice so i can keep the poke cool on the drive home i was directed to see 4 different people and in the end i just gave up and left the store. Im spending nearly $70 on seafood the least you could do is give a little ice. You would think when the store opens at 7am they would have everything ready for you to come get your food and good but they dont. When i arrived at 7:45am the store didnt have the poke ready so i had to wait over 30mins for them to make it and if you're expecting to get soup or anything else from the self-serv food stations they arent ready till around 8:30am. I believe if your store is opening @ 7am you should have everything ready and not take ~1hr to 1.5hrs while people are shopping/waiting to prepare and take everything out. read more

This store is usually pretty good but i'm absolutely sick to my stomach after seeing an employee in the produce section open-mouth hack coughing directly into the tomatoes that he was replenishing. He wound up covering his mouth, but somehow didn't remember to do so until about 3 long seconds into the cough attack. What's worse is, before I wrote this review I checked to see if anyone has seen anything similar and I saw someone else saying the same thing 24 days ago. This is absolutely unacceptable. Hello! Update here! After I contacted the their customer service, the manager of the bakery immediately reached out to me and offered us credit for a replacement cake for our next occasion. The manager Israel was super apologetic and wanted to make this right. Apparently, the baker had been using the wrong recipe for the cake? Not sure but regardless, great customer service on behalf of their management team. My family and I really appreciated the fact that they actively tried to fix the mistake and make sure we were happy. I wish I could post updated pictures, because this time, it was done correctly. The layers were even: the custard, cake, and raspberry filling were all equal, so the cake was balanced. No problems when we cut into it, no sliding of the layers like last time. The process of reordering was smooth, as well! The managers Israel and Mayra were really helpful, cooperative, and understanding in how we wanted it decorated and such. Again, my family and I really appreciated their willingness to right their wrong and make sure we were left happy. It goes to show, a good bakery is one that stands by their work. So I typically shop here with my service animal, but last week when I stopped by for some items, one of the Cart guys specifically told me that I was not allowed to bring my service animal inside, which is usually in a dog carrier that is fully enclosed. This seemed odd since I do it all the time, and under federal law, I am allowed to do so. I didn't want to argue or create a scene, so I just left. Pretty sad in this day and age. Is it because I am a POC? I will no longer shop here and spread the word, that Gelson's discriminates against people who have service animals, and or POC. Make this wrong a right, Gelson's. Would not recommend. The overall experience is not very good, their food being overpriced and low quality, as well as the staff being rude and judgmental. I was not once offered assistance in finding anything, and when I did ask about location of an item, the gentleman "helping me" just pointed to an isle before resuming his conversation with another staff member. In general, the staff seem to be indifferent to the quality of their customer service and don't seem to take their job seriously. The hot food bar does not have a great selection, and I noticed most of their fresh produce was bruised and deformed. I ended up shopping at the nearby Trader Joe's instead, and was much happier with their quality of goods and staff. read more

My bf and I always go to this Gelson's specifically for the McConnells ice cream. We love McConnells but there isn't really an accessible location near us (Los Feliz is the closest but the parking in that area is absolutely horrendous). We come here for our McConnells fix because they have a bigger selection than Vons/Ralphs, etc. The ice cream is around $7-8.50 for a pint which is cheaper than what they sell at their stores (I believe $10). The only downside is they don't have all the flavors, but they usually have the most popular ones. Parking is super easy at this Gelson's as they have a parking lot outside. It's also across the street from the Trader Joe's if you wanna get all your grocery shopping done in one trip. All of the employees have been pretty friendly to me so far. The store has always been pretty empty every time I've gone. read more

We frequently shop at Trader Joe's and the new Whole Foods 365 that popped up just down the street, but since Gelson's renovated their prepared foods section, I have found a new hot/cold/pizza bar that I love! Some might find their prices on the high side, which is true in some cases. However when we purchased fresh sushi and Wolfgang puck pizza at the deli counter, prices seemed very competitive with 365! Sushi was better quality and a few bucks cheaper than 365. The WP pizza is by far WAY tastier than 365's in-house brand and almost the same price, but you get a bigger slice too. If you're concerned about costs I would simply just come here for their deli and prepared foods. It's delicious. Poke and ceviche was available that isn't at any other of the stores! For regular grocery items, I think you'd just have to pick and choose what's on sale and go from there. The produce looked fresh and they had so many more pickle and kimchi choices than the other two markets. Impressed by Gelson's and the quality and variety of products they carry! You know, EVERY TIME I come to THIS Gelson's the employees are so rude. The cashiers never acknowledge me while I'm in the line. Nor do they pull out the tray on the side to put groceries on instead of me having to hold whatever I have. For me to even continue to come here is ridiculous but I love the food so I bite the bullet. I guess because I'm a Black woman the employees think I shouldn't be in this grocery store not sure. But it's just very off putting. Mostly I usually get the older woman with the heavy make-up but she wasn't there today. An older man white wavy should-length hair was the cashier. Never looked me in the eye, didn't want to hand me my receipt in my hand and didn't even tell me the total of my groceries. Just beyond rude. Maybe the store should look into inclusion training because I live in the area and shouldn't be profiled EVERY TIME I step foot into THIS Gelson's. I went there to get some yogurt, however it was expired. Not my first time seeing expired dairy and meat products at this store. In addition, the staff was unprofessional and rude. I normally enjoy going to Gelsons... but the staff at this location seemed inadequate compared to my past experiences at different locations. I love the remodeling they've done here. The people who work here are nice and helpful. The quality of their produce and meats are generally top notch, and they carry most of the specialty items you'd seek at a place like Whole Foods or Bristol Farms and often times, they carry items other places don't (i.e., in the summer, humongous strawberries on stems for dipping). I picked up a standing prime rib for roasting from the butcher at $19.99 per pound and it was of very high quality. The best thing though is now their prices on items you'd find in a regular grocery store (cereals, jams, carton broths, etc.) are relatively comparable to your local chain stores! That's a big deal considering they always seemed to be much more expensive. Given the shopping options in the area with Trader Joe's across the street and 365 Whole Foods Market a short drive away, it's great they've upped their game here since they're the only grocery store in the immediate area that does carry your standard corporate brand food items. read more

I'll go here when Trader Joe's is closed or if I have one of their rad spend 20$ get $5 off coupons. My issue with the higher prices here is that they majorly markup some of their items that are are readily available somewhere else, and multiple grocery store stops is sooo annoying. However there are a few things I really like about Gelson's. In the produce section they have sweet potatoes already prepared to be baked into some delicious fries. My patience is low though so I put them in the microwave for 5 minutes instead. They have a good kale/cabbage/carrot mix that I buy all of the time. A lot of yogurt variety, and a LOOOOT of ice cream. Some top notch sh*t, too. I don't buy it though..I just stare at it for a really long time and imagine how amazing it tastes. They even have the restaurant-ey part and the cafe part which is pretty good. I haven't noticed many hot people there, though. The hottie talent is much higher at Trader Joe's. read more

After spending countless hours in the lines of Safeway and Albertson's watching meth-addled cashiers trying to make change from a five dollar bill, for five minutes, or driving around the parking lot of Trader Joe's for fifteen minutes, becoming more and more aggro with every lost parking spot, I hereby do attest that while Gelson's might be a slant pricier than it's brethren, what you lose in the wallet is gained tenfold in positive shopping experience. GT and I rolled into Los Angeles on Thanksgiving Eve after I'd worked a 9 hour day and driven another three hours on top of that. Needless to say, I wasn't in a particularly happy-go-lucky headspace, and less so when GT had a bright idea of dropping me off at Gelsons to do our pre-Thanksgiving shopping. "Are you batshit crazy?" I thought, "it's Thanksgiving Eve! I'll be trampled to death in the gravy aisle!" But, to my surprise, my favorite little grocery store was humming along, staffing up the registers when the lines backed up more than four deep and staffing the aisles with an amazingly helpful crew who deftly assisted those of us gripping shopping lists with white knuckles and muttering things like "sausage? where's the sausage aisle?" while clutching a bottle of vodka (which was at that moment, sadly unopened). We stop into this market frequently as we have friends who live just around the corner, and while the wine prices might not be amenable to the COSTCO crew, I'm a big fan of the impeccably clean restrooms, the well-stocked prepared foods endcaps, the wine and cheese selection, and the meat counter. read more

But, Gelson's is completely evil in terms of prices. 33% more than Albertson's, Trader Joe's, etc. I cringe every time I check-out. I guess I'm paying for the pretty mosaic work throughout the store. Ok, I take that back, I lied--I HAVE written a few here and there for some mom n pop neighborhood groceries and the occasional non-superchain market, but never for a 'mainstream' supermarket. So...Gelsons would have you believe that they are ANYTHING BUT your average, run-of-the-mill, 'mainstream' supermarket, but after my experiences over the past few days, I have my doubts. While they may be technically above the basic Vons/Ralphs in general offerings and quality (but not Ralphs' 'Fresh Fare' stores or Vons' Pavilions stores), they are hardly the gourmet/specialty market they claim to be, and do not hold a candle to places like Whole Foods and Bristol Farms with which they aspire to be competing, though they DO bitterly compete with Whole Foods and Bristol in the 'high prices' category fo'.....SHO'! My reason for blabbing about Gelsons today is to commend them on some most delicious takeaway food from behind the deli/prepared foods case, while calling them out on some sub-par 'packaged fresh' items as well. Basically, their 'Deli' counter is fairly competent for takeaway foods if you're either hosting a small dinner party or just want some piecemeal home meal replacements for yourself if you don't have the time or desire to cook. During the past week I took home a) 1/3 lb of 'Wheatberry Salad,' these crunchy, chewy globules most resemble couscous in appearance only, but are darker in color and provide an excellent source of dietary fiber (ok, well, that's enough of the nutritional lesson here!)... b) 1/2 lb of 'Chicken Diablo'--the chicken was really fresh and i'm not sure if it was a traditional 'diablo' sauce, but it had a great blend of sun dried tomatoes and basil and some other veggies, and the sauce kinda reminded me of the 'vodka cream sauce' they sell over at TJ's. The sauce was very light though, so i didn't get the Bloat. ;O} c) Tofu Spring Rolls-- for $4.50 you get two decent sized spring rolls, with a 'Peanut' dipping sauce. I was happily crunching and munching away on my first few 'naked' bites of rice paper, tofu, carrots, cilantro, lettuce, and red cabbage before i decided to dip into the so-called Peanut sauce. BLECH! BLAH! BLOOPOOEY! The Peanut sauce tasted more like Russian Dressing!!! Dizgooosting! Then I was like, 'where's the freekin' glass/mung bean noodles hidin' at?' So I bit in thrice, and there i crushed down on a block of....ICE! I'm not shitting you here. Yes, embalmed like the Ice Man found in Northern Europe a decade or two ago, there sat my beloved glass/mung bean noodles, entombed in an icy block of...well....ICE. Starving, I nuked the thing in the microwave for like 20 secs. When it came out, as expected, the rest of the spring roll was wilted and collapsed, the rice paper completely ripped apart. DO NOT GET THE TOFU OR SHRIMP SPRING ROLLS HERE! d) Ahi Tuna Sashimi 'Marinade' For about 9 bucks you get a bunch of untasty, unfresh ahi tuna cubes that were so unpalatable i threw them on the grill and fully cooked them out, so that not an iota or red or pink was left. I then began eating the pellets and realized what's the point, it's non-deelish no matter how you dice it, slice it, or cook it.... DO NOT BUY ANY SUSHI COUNTER FARE HERE! Well, I guess i shoulda known better than to buy asian takeaway food at a 'mainstream' market like Gelsons (especially the Sushi counter, which generally sucks ass at any market with perhaps the exception of Whole Foods, which has reasonably ok quality). Yes, I said it. Gelsons is mainstream, NOT gourmet/specialty. Gelsons, you're good enough, but you're not All That....get over yourself. And while you're at it, lower those chichi overblown prices! Holy smokes, this place is overpriced! And the thing is? It's not even overpriced for good quality food, like Whole Foods. Yeah, I read the other reviews that echo the same overpriced sentiment. But the reality of it was so much worse than I walked in prepared for. Gelson's marks up regular old brand-name items by at least 50 cents or $1. One Mexican Coke? $1.59. Haagen Dazs ice cream? $4.99 (just reduced...). Even the price on Honey Nut Cheerios seemed exorbitant and that's not an item with which I shop around for prices. This is definitely not the grocery store to do your regular shopping. HOWEVER, I do love that there are things here you can't find anywhere else. I found gluten free items I haven't been able to find at health food stores, Whole Foods, or any of the regular grocery store chains. They had CPK frozen GF pizzas, fresh gluten free pastas, and so many different Feel Good Foods items I've never even seen. This is a place for target shopping. Gelson's, I've determined, is where you can get your specialty items that can't be found elsewhere and any produce you need to be extra fresh and pretty. A big bonus was how nice the staff were. When I was looking at the beautiful display of packaged fruits, a worker offered me a fresh package of watermelon instead of one off the shelf. The checkout guys were super nice too! But sorry, that's not going to make me overpay for my standard groceries. I'll be back for a few things every so often, but my weekly grocery shopping will definitely be done elsewhere. read more

Not located on the best street for in and out access that's for sure! Gelson's is located on Hyperion in Silverlake. Be forewarned, if you come to this store during rush hour prime time traffic (Mon - Fri between 5-7), make sure you take a couple of chill pills so you can deal with the traffic insanity and to deal with the parking and traffic nightmare here! You do pay a premium to shop here. They have great meats and produce and hard to find cooking sundries. Be sure to check out their baked fresh daily baguettes. It's the best tasting baguette I've had since I was in France. Crispy crust on the out, soft and delectable inside. It's great with butter or a nice cheese accompanied by a nice glass of wine. I think they must add crack to the baguette, it's so addicting! Another kudos to Gelsons is that they seem to hire the physically/mentally challenged (trying to be PC about my choice of words) for their bag clerks. Be sure to try their fresh baked baguettes!
