Returned to the Gem to try another menu item. The place is famous for pizza and it is an out of this world experience. Today we were surrounded by pizza eaters, everyone happy and smiling. Place has open seating and plenty of TVs. We went for burgers. We had heard good things about burgers, so we dipped our toes into the change pool and gave it a shot. Unfortunately, it was a disappointment. Either we had the wrong day or an inattentive cook. Wifey had the regular burger with a slice of raw and fries. Burger was ordered medium, a little pink showing. I went with the Gem Burger 1/3 pound with all the trimmings - tomato, lettuce, onion, bacon and a slice of pepper jack - and an order of fries. Wifeys burger was well done, even singed black on one side and her fries looked like they were from the end of the bag. All of them were pretty much less than an inch long. My burger was similar, not medium and more on the well side, but my bun was burned. Not just toasted a little extra, I could taste the burned bread. My fries were similar. The Gem has a problem with quality control. All the pizzas that came out looked fantastic, our burgers, not so much. The kicker was the cook came out to get a look at us before the end of the meal. Just a quick look and back to the kitchen. Bottom line .... stick to pizza. I'll never go back for another burger. There are better places in town for a good burger. Recommend that non pizza orders be double checked with good quality standards before leaving the kitchen. read more

Overall happy with our experience here. Pretty sure the spinach artichoke dip was microwaved to heat up. But still tasted good. The BBQ chicken pizza was amazing. Definitely more than enough food for 2 people. Prices are reasonable as well. Service was quick. The menu isn't extensive but the things we tried were good. We stopped for dinner after a long day of skiing. The interior itself is a bit basic, mostly just a bunch of TVs streaming golf. Our server was curt but nice enough. The cheese curds were a hit at our table so I definitely recommend ordering, especially if you're an out-of-towner! The standout meal was the pizza - they have huge deep dishes that are tasty and filling. We had the veggie option which was completely loaded with mushrooms, peppers, olives, etc. it's definitely enough to share for 2-3 people. read more

Historical class and amazing pizza are a hidden "gem" behind the doors of this corner saloon! The entrance is right on the corner of Ash and Water; you'd never realize how beautiful and deceptively large this place is from the outside! You're in for quick service with a fun, lighthearted and personable staff and you won't find yourself waiting for your drinks and incredible food. The pizza is a whole different kind of special-I'm not usually into deep dish but the ingredients are fresh and seasoned to perfection, incredible meat toppings. A medium size could easily be great for 4-6 people at a reasonable price for the thickness you're receiving. Lovely selection of liquor and beer. Gem City is a fantastic place to watch a game; there are Flat-screens throughout, as well as a large projector screen in the center room to make sure everyone can see the action! The ceiling is incredible high and takes away the claustrophobic atmosphere some bars and restaurant have, but still feels intimate as the beautiful interior woodwork throughout is a testimony to a timeless era of Baraboo. There are gorgeous intricate stained glass lights above a classic vintage bar, above the large middle room and lovely matching sconces throughout the back area as well, which also features a pool table. There are bar table/chairs throughout as well as a few booths upon entering. You can play darts, pool or even use the touch tunes digital music player, which is an awesome feature! They keep their whole establishment clean, including the restrooms. I'd say the only con is limited parking, but not a big issue. Bonus; we couldn't get a babysitter and brought our 18mo in and they were very accommodating. There were high chairs and the staff were so cheerful and kind with our daughter. She enjoyed her time as well! I highly recommend Gem for their historic atmosphere, delicious food, quick and fun service! Great for a group night out or a date. read more

What a "gem" of a place in Baraboo. A spacious interior with table seating as well as an expansive bar to drink and eat. A respectable tap list as well as menu featuring appetizer, sandwiches, salad and what I stopped on for-pizza. It was my first time stopping in and was super impressed by their pan style offering. A super rich crust with a crispy bottom piled high with toppings. I went with the deluxe-sausage, pepperoni, Canadian bacon, onions, olives, mushroom and peppers. It is absolutely massive and perfectly cooked. What impressed me was the sauce. It wasn't a traditional tomato sauce but almost a bechamel/cheese sauce. I still don't know what it was but absolutely delicious. Definitely wouldn't hesitate stopping in if ever traveling through Baraboo again. read more

Found this place for lunch yesterday while I was in Baraboo. Figured I'd stop based on some pizza photos I'd seen on Yelp. Sat at the bar where I was greeted by a friendly bartender. Restaurant was inviting, bathrooms were clean. Met the owner Gary who was proud of his menu and restaurant I ordered a thin crust pizza (the pan style is standard) with sausage, onion, and black olive. My only regret is that I failed to snap a photo! Crispy crust that held all of the toppings and the sausage pieces were huge and tasty. I will recommend this place to everyone I speak to in the area and I'm looking forward to my return. read more

We had 4 ladies in our party and we had 2 of the six pieces left of the pan and 3 of the 8 pieces of the thin left. Sausage topping is actually a meatball! Service was great. A fantastic & surprise experience from the moment we walked in. GEM City Saloon doesn't look like much from the outside, and when you walk in it's looks like many other bar / tavern's in Wisconsin. What sets this place apart is its food and down to earth, friendly employees. I stopped in with my mom after watching the fall colors in the Baraboo / Devils Lake area. My mom is 80yrs old. We shared an appetizer of fried green bean, they were super hot & tasty and the side of ranch dressing was spot on. My mom ordered the Chicago style hotdog and raved about it. I had the prime rib sandwich that was topped with melted cheese and grilled onions & mushrooms. It was delicious! I only ate half of the sandwich because I'm watching my diet portions. Both of our orders came with homemade French Fries, they were great as well. When I got home the leftovers never got to the refrigerator, my teenage sons gobbled it all down. I'm heading back next weekend with my two sons because I know that they well love this place. If you have a chance, please try this hidden GEM City Saloon out! read more

This is a bar that serves up deep dish like pizza wow even the small was big 6 squares for a small and could eat 1 and maybe a half. Good amount of topping sausage, beef, Canadian bacon added onion. We had heard that pizza here was great so decided to give it a try. Place was charming with old exposed brick. Our waitress was very friendly and welcoming. We shared a small pan pizza and could only eat four of the six slices. It was delicious! Toppings were yummy & plentiful. And the bonus was leftover lunch the next day! Will definitely return. Hands down, about the best sausage pizza I have ever had. While the thick crust is good, the thin crust is my favorite. Cracker thin. Then the toppings speak for themselves without all the dough. I will not waiver from the sausage pizza. Large chunks of fennel sausage are generously sprinkled on the pie. SO GOOD. Cold beer and great pizza is a win win any day. read more
