Back in July, I was headed out of Winnemucca and my truck broke down near the 95/78 outside Jordan Valley. I had no idea where to take my truck but started checking Yelp and found Gem State Diesel. I called and talked to Mike who said to bring it on in. After a long tow truck ride I dropped the truck off. They inspired a lot of confidence but couldn't get it done immediately though, which was understandable as it was a big job. Turbo, etc. Mike called me a couple days later and said it was done. I picked it up and it ran great! Fast forward: My luck is I was coming back through Boise area when I developed a fuel leak yesterday. I wasn't too far from GSD so I limped it in there. Steve was able to identify the problem, get it fixed and get me back on the road. If I were local to Treasure Valley Gem State Diesel would be my go to for sure! Came here based on all the positive reviews. First fix was good. Second trip, immediately something broke after one item was repaired. This happened two different times. Thought had to be coincidence until my uncle took his in and the same things started happening. Fox truck, go home- something else breaks/leaks days later. And they are big repairs. Final red flag. Took truck in for a service light. Told us we did something wrong- charged us for labor to look at it. Shortly after, light comes on again. Take it back in and told it "XYZ 'needed to be replaced". Cost was $2000+. Call around- take it to a reputable place that also specializes in Diesel. XYZ was not even broken or needing replaced. Actual cost for the service light issue was $451. Later find out, the item Gem State wanted to replace was just replaced BY THEM year and half ago! Something is fishy with this company. You'll be dumping thousands before you know it. Wow!! an honest Mechanic and priced Very reasonable. I had made an appointment over the phone and was asked what the issue with my truck was. I have a 2008 F250 Superduty with the 6.4. I had a loss of power when towing. I had searched the issues online and thought it was a turbo issue. After days of diagnosis, I was called and was told it was just an air filter. Thank you Gem State Diesel. I have and will be telling everyone of my friends and anyone who will listen where to take their Diesel to get worked on for all issues and basic maintenance. read more

I took my Truck I just purchased to Gem because it wouldn't pass smog. They inspected the truck and found smog equipment had been removed. They gave me an estimate to repair it but suggested I go back where I purchased it to get them to replace the missing equipment. When I picked up the truck Dave refused to charge me but gave me a detailed report of what needed to be installed to return the truck to stock. This Yelp ad says "free estimates" yet when I went in with our 2006 Dodge Mega Cab we were told it would cost "$5,000 just to look it over". We have 4 diesel trucks (3 F-350's & the Dodge) that could have potentially gone to this company Too bad for them. I took it to another shop all it was was an idler pulley a loose fuel line and two bushings cost $600 I don't know where he was getting 5000 just to look at it. There was also the deterrent of one customer sitting in the waiting room and as soon as I walked in the door he asked if I was there to get screwed also as he was collecting his bill and paying!! I will not be going back and I don't recommend anyone else go there to be screwed over there are plenty of good diesel mechanics around this area!! read more

Great service from Gem State. Came in at 9:00 Am and my truck was ready the same afternoon. Had a real bad noise from an installation of a large gas tank from a dealer. These guys found that the DEF hose was not routed correctly and solved the problem. No rattles, inexpensive fix and super nice guys. Will definitely be back for my regular service and any other needs. read more

Where to begin? First I guess they should change their name to, "We cheat'um and HOW!". Towed my 2006 Dodge 2500 to these guys because the truck would not move forward when the tranny was put in drive. Brian called me back, to tell me that my truck has "issues" and it was going to take him all day to get me a quote. It was more like a sexual assault in the highest degree! The quote came back at $14,000 and some change. The truck is only worth $16K. I was disgusted and told them my wife would have it towed home, as I was now out of town for work. When my wife was waiting for the tow truck driver, GSD's mechanics were circling like vultures wanting to know if she was going to sell the truck. Ah! That explains it, they GSD, wanted me to throw my hands up and sell them the truck for a song, and they could then make a profit? I maybe onto something. Well, another certified Dodge Diesel mechanic and myself inspected the truck using the quote as a guide. What a complete sham. Three quarters of the items were still good, IE they said the brakes where bad and needed replaced. The brake pads still have three quarters of their life left. There isn't anything wrong with the brake pads. I spent $2K in parts and a day installing them. These parts didn't cause the truck to not move, they were just worn out parts IE wheel bearing assembly, upper and lower ball joints and front U-joints. Ended up taking the truck to another mechanic and had the front diff rebuilt, $2.3K which solved my problem AND the front diff wasn't mentioned at all on the quote from GSD. Stay away from GSD and Brian, they are not honest and will try to relieve you of all your money in your account. If you have no mechanical aptitude, stay away from these guys and look for someone else. I would give them NO STARS but you can not give zero stars you have to give them at least one. I can not believe these guys have a 4.4 star rating, surely I'm not the only one who they tried to lie to. Keep scrolling through the mechanic section in the internet. These guys are why mechanic shops have a horrible name. If other diesel mechanics know these guys, maybe you could encourage them to be honest. read more
