Verve has the atmosphere and selection you'd expect from a great wine shop, but the kicker is having incredibly knowledgeable sommeliers like Natalie who can actually help you discover wines you'll love. I also asked for some recommendations and he pulled a few bottles, all under $40. A super fun shop in Pac Heights. Two things that I wish were different, but perhaps just isn't written in the cards: (1) A lot of the wines are very high up on the shelves, which makes casual perusing very difficult. Asking the staff to climb up and grab random bottles just feels like a big ask. I personally like looking at the importer, ABV, and other details on the label to help me shop and this is only possible for about 50% of the wines that are accessible without a ladder; (2) Unfortunately, they no longer allow guests to purchase a bottle to drink in the shop, which is unfortunate because I love browsing the shelves at Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant and finding a bottle to open up in the shop to drink. They have a mailing list you can subscribe to in store or online, and be sure to do it! They make sure to only mail you news about the types of grapes/regions you choose. I am always happy to open their emails b/c they are purposeful and infrequent. They always offer a special on a dozen wines, so I finally decided to take them up on it. I submitted my order online and during COVID, they operate with curbside pickup. After I submitted my order, I emailed asking for the weight of the dozen b/c I was planning to walk back w/my dozen. David very quickly replied with a kind recommendation based on the distance and weight he estimated. I arrived with a 60L backpack in tow, I gave them a call that I was outside, and they safely placed my dozen outside and patiently waited while I packed to confirm that I was able to transport everything myself. They also include a description of each wine w/the dozen purchase including pairings. The dozen is a GREAT deal b/c it averages to about $10 a bottle for quality wines that I will certainly be buying again.
