I have been a longtime customer of GEN and have always enjoyed coming here with family and friends, which makes this review especially disappointing. Our party of 10 had a bill of $392.61. To pay, I provided 8 gift cards consisting of six $50 gift cards, one card with a balance of $22.24, and one card with a balance of $14.28. I am certain of the balances on these cards before they were handed to our server. When the cards were returned, I only received 7 cards back, despite providing 8. The server also stated that I had only given her five $50 gift cards, which was incorrect. After I pointed out that I had eight gift card sleeves and that the numbers were not adding up, the manager became involved. A receipt showed a gift card with a remaining balance of $10.96. Based on the last four digits listed on that receipt, that card had not originally been returned to me. The server later brought back a card matching those digits and claimed it was one of the cards I had provided. However, I am certain that I did not provide a card with a $10.96 balance. The most frustrating part was not the money itself, but how the situation was handled. I left feeling that my concerns were dismissed rather than investigated. Even though I disputed the discrepancy, I still paid the remaining balance and left a 20% tip because I respect the restaurant industry and understand that hospitality is a team effort. I am requesting that GEN review the transaction history and security footage to determine what happened. I hope management takes this matter seriously because trust is important when guests hand over multiple gift cards or forms of payment. We visited Gen Korean BBQ for a family birthday celebration with family visiting from Cali. We had a 6:00 PM reservation and were seated shortly after, which was impressive for a large party! However, the service and atmosphere were a bit of a rollercoaster. The Service & Drinks The biggest downside was the wait for drinks. Our waters didn't arrive until an hour into the meal. I ended up sharing my fiancé's Coke and eventually had to resort to my own Yeti for some coconut water. I also ordered a Milk Tea Boba, which was delicious and definitely helped bridge the gap while we waited. The Food & Setup The meat we ordered actually beat the staff to the table--our cooking stations weren't even turned on yet! Once we got going, the food was great (the grilled pineapple is a must!), but be prepared for the smoke. When the restaurant is full, the ventilation struggles, and it gets very smoky inside. My family and I had a 3-Star experience at Gen Korean BBQ. Our waiter was friendly, and the food portions were generous. There were a few issues, though. My father-in-law found a small metal wire in his food, which was concerning. We were also told the air conditioning wasn't working properly because it was clogged with grease, so the restaurant was a bit uncomfortable. I also think our waiter could have paid a little more attention to our grill. I'm not sure if they were short-staffed, but we found ourselves waiting a few times. Overall, we still enjoyed our visit. We went fairly late at almost 9 pm and we were seated in about 10 minutes. My friend and I always order a couple plates of the Honey Soy beef belly since it's thinly sliced and cooks fast. Dip it in the green sea salt or the other oil and soy sauce. The calamari steak is a great choice too since that's a fast cook and easy to cut up. First time trying the cheesy corn and kimchi fried rice. Unfortunately no salad on this visit but I always enjoy the banchan (side dishes) like the potato salad and cucumber kimchi. The place was enjoy when we arrived but when we left an hour and a half later it was packed. The tables were filled and the place was pumping. I'm so glad they have liquor now. It's the most Incredible value on Maui besides a Costco hotdog. Might be the only AYCE independent restaurant that's not a resort buffet. It's FCFS on a short waiting list mostly for larger parties. And watchale, it's a 2 hour dining window folks. The place is pretty busy on weekends. Don't know what lunch is like but for under $25 you really cannot go wrong if you don't mind smelling like a cookout. You are greeted by hostesses and taken to your table in a dim, slightly cavernous dining area. Every table has a burner and vent. If it's 60% full you'll feel it humid, warm and smoky. If you've washed your hair earlier, you'll wash it again after dinner. The menu can be a little confusing at first. However, they offer 3 prices: Lunch, Dinner, and an additional $20 each to add Premium proteins. The menu lists 45 items that you can potentially get, plus 5 banchan items and a tray of 3 dipping seasonings, so table space gets small on a 4 top. Our server deftly juggled a section of 6 tables patiently explaining menu items, fetching ice water in huge soda cups, switching carbonized burners and replenishing foods- if needed. You can start ordering 4 appetizers, then selecting starches and meats. Runners start dropping meat trays quickly, so clear the deck. You'll cook your own meats with provided tongs, (one for raw, one for cooked) and a pair of dull scissors. It's fast and furious if you're starving...and filling. All meats were good with paper thin beef belly brisket and Kalbi awesome. Premium cuts include Waygu, marinated selections and tongue. Deep Fried Tonkatsu Cheese cutlets and calamari were indulgences. Other items Kap Chae noodles and Spicy Fried Rice are disappointing. Make sure you get steamed rice at the start as the thinly sliced fatty meats cook fast. Otherwise you'll get filled fast. Some pickled banchan items are good, but not great. Hint: let your server guide you if you're a newbie. If you return down the line you'll be more selective on what you'll really enjoy. With the basic $35 menu we were stuffed and did not need any replenishments. No leftovers allowed so don't go nuts. Colorful drink menu only offers Virgins ATM, so bring a few cold beers. read more

Gen Korean BBQ is a franchise that opened up recently on Maui! It's more on the higher end side, so expect to pay a lot of money if you bring your whole family. Be aware, when it's Friday, Saturday, Sunday + holidays you are expected to pay the dinner rate, which is $36 (I think). I'm not sure if this is common at all Gen BBQs, but this is the rule on Maui. The place itself was huge and could easily seat up to 70 tables, it was clean and the workers were very friendly as well. As for the food, you can't go wrong with some grilled meat and banchan. My favorite side of them all was the hotteok (y'all gotta get 5 orders of those lol, so yummy). Do yourself a favor and save some coin. Apparently there are three menu options: lunch, dinner, and premium (+$20). We know the difference between lunch and dinner (menu items) but premium is new to us. We decided to stick to the lunch menu coz we weren't ready to drop $~55++ per person for lunch at KBBQ AYCE. The quality/flavors are the same as that of Honolulu. We got our usuals: brisket, beef bulgogi, spicy pork bulgogi, boneless kalbi. We don't get fillers like appetizers. (I'd go to an actual Korean restaurant for that.) We tried the pork belly this time (coz I was influenced by Bloodhounds). The brisket presentation was haphazard; we've seen it a lot neater. I'm aware they're still in their first year of operations so I'll keep the critiques constructive. Our server was Jayson, who was friendly enough but kind of slow, forgot requests, and often missing in action. It felt like most of the servers were actively avoiding eye contact with the diners. Cashing out took a while because there's only one cashier who comes to your table. It wasn't super busy when we started our lunch. There was no music when we dined in. Overall, 3.5 stars. Decor & lighting is corporate Gen with dim periwinkle lighting, a pretty good ventilation system and even high top grill tables. FOOD: Calamari Rings - Breaded, mainstream, tasty dark-hued dipping sauce. Rice Sticks - The cook's fave, crunchy & sticky sticks over a sweet chili sauce. I didn't love it. Japchae - Dark-colored glass noodles with a sweet and savory flavor. Deep Fried Mandu - Crispy shells, moist filling, savory dipping sauce. Premium Ribeye, Premium Wagyu, Premium Marinated Long Bone Short Rib Steak - Our cook expertly seasoned them with the garlic salt from the dipping ramekin which also included a sesame oil and a soy-based sauce. The spot has plenty parking and we went 11:30am to beat the lunch rush but apparently it's not too crazy for lunch as it is evenings especially Saturdays. The host was taking phone orders between seating guests so we waited maybe 5 minutes or so but we were in no hurry. There was another couple ahead of us which also added to the wait. When the host, Mark got to us, he greeted us with a friendly smile and brought us to our table. He was young but already had excellent customer service. Keep it up! On June 30, 2025, I went here to celebrate my birthday, and it turned out to be the most frustrating Korean BBQ experience I've ever had. As an Asian who is a big fan of Korean BBQ and has been to many places, I can confidently say this one is easily at the bottom tier. We paid extra for the premium meat, and I must say, it was not worth it at all--it was far from premium. Additionally, many items on the menu were unavailable that night. This is the only Korean BBQ place I've been to that didn't offer lettuce or cheese, and they were very stingy with the sides, like kimchi and pickled radish. They served us small portions to share, which disappeared within minutes, and the refill took forever. The service was awful; we had to wait a long time for everything--meat refills, water refills, side refills, and even the check. In the end, we had to walk straight to the cashier just to pay and leave. I really wish I had chosen a different place to celebrate my birthday. It was very upsetting. read more

My friend took me there and I had never been before. We ordered off the exclusive menu which was $50. Absolutely worth every penny for the quality of food you get. It's all you can eat, and we ate a lot. Our server was wonderful and friendly and I'm not sure if it was the maître d' or the owner, but he was super attentive to us as well. Since I tried gens on Oahu I couldn't wait till Maui got one and I've been to the one here about four times now. Overall great customer service the waiters and waitresses are pretty cool. The food is overall food pre cooked and the meat choices are good. Service has become excessively slow, with wait times of 20-30 minutes between interactions, and we often felt ignored. Staff avoided eye contact and appeared disengaged, showing little sense of urgency while maintaining a very slow pace. I just have been to a location in Seattle that had been open for a while. So the food and the service were not there yet. Well let me say on my most recent visit with my family I believe they are better than the location in Seattle. Th food was really good. It also looks like they have more items and the flavors were very good. We had the steak, the brisket, the pork and all were very good the only one i wasn't super thrilled with was the calamari steak. But the calamari rings with the dipping sauce was Ono (Good). The Mandu was also very good and I can be picky about Mandu and dumplings because I have had some really good ones. These were good and my family enjoyed them. The wait staff and our waiter were awesome. Some of the best service i have had on Maui and overall some of the best service I have had period. Our waiter was on it he had recommendations that were spot on. He knew the right questions to ask to reccomend he knew his menu. I really wish had written his name down. He was on it with grill changes and very good about checking on us. Got our refills before we even had to ask. It made for a very enjoyable evening plus i got to spend time with my family as I don't see them as often as i used to. Worst kbbq I've ever had. Did not get the premium dinner, got the regular dinner. I've never felt so bamboozled at a kbbq place in my life. The meat was the worst quality meat, I've ever eaten for an AYCE kbbq. The brisket was shredded into tiny pieces. Like what the hell was that. The Service was meh. The waiter was staffed to several parties larger than 4 people, several tables of parties of 2, and had no help. The runner with the food, was okay, it took her forever to clear off the empty plates.
