We visited Gen Korean BBQ for a family birthday celebration with family visiting from Cali. We had a 6:00 PM reservation and were seated shortly after, which was impressive for a large party! However, the service and atmosphere were a bit of a rollercoaster. The Service & Drinks The biggest downside was the wait for drinks. Our waters didn't arrive until an hour into the meal. I ended up sharing my fiancé's Coke and eventually had to resort to my own Yeti for some coconut water. I also ordered a Milk Tea Boba, which was delicious and definitely helped bridge the gap while we waited. The Food & Setup The meat we ordered actually beat the staff to the table--our cooking stations weren't even turned on yet! Once we got going, the food was great (the grilled pineapple is a must!), but be prepared for the smoke. When the restaurant is full, the ventilation struggles, and it gets very smoky inside. Pro-Tips for Your Visit: * Watch Your Step: The floors are very slippery, so walk with extra caution! * Smoke Factor: Wear something you don't mind smelling like BBQ for the rest of the night. * Large Parties: They are great at seating reservations on time, but be patient with the follow-up service. Despite the long wait times, we had a wonderful time. It's a fun, high-energy spot, just keep these tips in mind for a smooth night! XOXO, ChelsieFletcher

My family and I had a 3-Star experience at Gen Korean BBQ. Our waiter was friendly, and the food portions were generous. There were a few issues, though. My father-in-law found a small metal wire in his food, which was concerning. We were also told the air conditioning wasn't working properly because it was clogged with grease, so the restaurant was a bit uncomfortable. I also think our waiter could have paid a little more attention to our grill. I'm not sure if they were short-staffed, but we found ourselves waiting a few times. Overall, we still enjoyed our visit. The food and portions were great, but fixing the AC and paying a little more attention to table service would make the experience even better.

We went fairly late at almost 9 pm and we were seated in about 10 minutes. My friend and I always order a couple plates of the Honey Soy beef belly since it's thinly sliced and cooks fast. Dip it in the green sea salt or the other oil and soy sauce. The calamari steak is a great choice too since that's a fast cook and easy to cut up. First time trying the cheesy corn and kimchi fried rice. Unfortunately no salad on this visit but I always enjoy the banchan (side dishes) like the potato salad and cucumber kimchi. Korean bbq never disappoints and a great place to visit if you want a late night spot to eat at on Maui with friends.

Been to a lot of Gens on the mainland but the service here was just amazing, WAY better than the rest in my opinion! Jason was friendly, professional and on top of everything. The food always excellent but the service set it apart.

We had a fun time dining here tonight. We walked in around 4:30 p.m.Wec had the most kind, caring waitress. She was on it. We asked questions and they were answered. The food we had was ooohhh so much we had pork belly. Steak, KFC (korean fried chicken) chicken, veggies and shrimp. I didn't get any pictures because we were so excited to eat here Once again. The place was enjoy when we arrived but when we left an hour and a half later it was packed. The tables were filled and the place was pumping. I'm so glad they have liquor now. When we dubbed here last they didn't have their liquor license but now they do. PERFECT! I'M All IN! When you walk in you will get a text after you give them the information that they need, you'll wait for about 10 minutes or so. If they have a table ready they'll accommodate you. The ambiance is is kind of dark here but you can see but I like more light. So I can see. I feel so old because I like it lighted. Lol.... Well be back to get more things! Excellent service brings us back and they did it tonight.

Good food at a great price, lots of parking available, great for families with kids. It gets busy, so beware, you'll have a bit of a wait. As soon as your order comes, put in another order so your grill is never empty, like ours was for about 10-15 min. Ask for your burner to be changed while you're waiting. We were waiting for rice, water, ban chan, and of course, our order. One server was a bit sassy, but everyone else was nice. Casual vibes, prepare to smell like bbq when you leave.

The food was good but the service was crap! I've been to other gen locations and this is by far the worst of all. We were left waiting for the food we ordered about 10 minutes and the grill burned. They do NOT replace grills. They give you some radishes to use to clean your grill in between. Like what in the world?? And you're expected to clean off the ashes and cook the new food in it? It is so gross! Our waiter never came by. We had to yell across for rice and stuff. This is not what I expect from Gen. not a good decision to come here and regret wasting a dinner on this place. Awful service. You are waiting a LOT in between food refills. They take 10-20 minutes to bring out the refill. It's overall one of the worst meal experiences I've had.

Keith and Noah were Awesome. Best service I have ever had.. Good Job Food was great, service was world class, wait was a bit long but it was because this place was busy..

Gen Korean BBQ is a franchise that opened up recently on Maui! It's more on the higher end side, so expect to pay a lot of money if you bring your whole family. Be aware, when it's Friday, Saturday, Sunday + holidays you are expected to pay the dinner rate, which is $36 (I think). I'm not sure if this is common at all Gen BBQs, but this is the rule on Maui. The place itself was huge and could easily seat up to 70 tables, it was clean and the workers were very friendly as well. As for the food, you can't go wrong with some grilled meat and banchan. My favorite side of them all was the hotteok (y'all gotta get 5 orders of those lol, so yummy). Do yourself a favor and save some coin. Go to Costco and buy the 2 gift cards (worth $50 each) for the price of $79.99. Don't pay full price for this meal lol, especially on the weekend!

First time to the Maui location but been to the Ala Moana location on O'ahu multiple times (although the last time was probably last year!) We came for lunch at approx 12:45pm on a Monday (Dec 23, 2024), got seated relatively quickly. Adult weekday lunch price is $21.95++. Apparently there are three menu options: lunch, dinner, and premium (+$20). We know the difference between lunch and dinner (menu items) but premium is new to us. We decided to stick to the lunch menu coz we weren't ready to drop $~55++ per person for lunch at KBBQ AYCE. The quality/flavors are the same as that of Honolulu. We got our usuals: brisket, beef bulgogi, spicy pork bulgogi, boneless kalbi. We don't get fillers like appetizers. (I'd go to an actual Korean restaurant for that.) We tried the pork belly this time (coz I was influenced by Bloodhounds). The brisket presentation was haphazard; we've seen it a lot neater. I'm aware they're still in their first year of operations so I'll keep the critiques constructive. Our server was Jayson, who was friendly enough but kind of slow, forgot requests, and often missing in action. It felt like most of the servers were actively avoiding eye contact with the diners. Cashing out took a while because there's only one cashier who comes to your table. It wasn't super busy when we started our lunch. There was no music when we dined in. Overall, 3.5 stars. Acceptable as long as you know what to expect-- no-frills AYCE bbq.

Food: We ordered the honey walnut shrimp, miso butterfish, garlic furikake fries, hamachi sashimi, garlic noodles, and crispy chicken. My favorite was the hamachi sashimi. What I enjoyed about this dish was the diced maui onion that offset the citrus from the ponzu. The flavors are light, and refreshing. The most disappointing was the crispy chicken. I thought it was too salty, but that's my preference and salt tolerance. The miso butterfish was also a great dish. The fish was buttery and flavored well. Not too saucy but the perfect amount of sauce. Service: Service is friendly, like most of the restaurants on Maui. The food was served in a timely manner. The ambiance is casual and felt like a bar restaurant. Overall, I'm not sure if I would return. After ordering 6-7 dishes, I wanted to be blown away by at least 4-5 of them, but that wasn't the case. Do yourself a service and try it out at least once if you are curious!

The roast duck was really good actually. The general tsao's chicken and chicken lettuce was good, I've definitely been to other spots that were better but I don't have anything bad to say about it. What I really disliked about this place was the Seafood Bird's Nest. Initially, they thought I ordered a Seafood Delight, but my order was missing the noodles. But they basically just fried up some noodles real quick and threw it under. And that part wouldn't have been a problem for me, but it was honestly waaaay too salty (and I like really salty! so that says a lot to me) It was difficult to eat to be honest, but I of course didn't want to waste it. The seafood included 3 pieces of shrimp, about a stick of imitation crab meat, a couple small pieces of scallop, and A LOT of calamari pieces that were soooo tough to chew, we couldn't even really eat them! For the chicken lettuce, they gave us about 3 full pieces of lettuce that was cut up and then charged us $4.00 for more pieces of lettuce which is pretty pricey lol. The siu mai was mid.. but you get what you pay for. There was also a 3% additional kitchen surcharge which was weird...? Still not sure what that was for lol. And then on top of that there's another 3% charge if you use credit card, so just be aware of that. The service was fine, because there was basically no one else in the restaurant anyway. Also - my boyfriend told me they had no soap in the restroom at all which was inconvenient. Overall, the price of their food does not make sense for the level of quality. I wouldn't recommend to my peers to come here, except maybe just grab their roast duck to go.

Fried Nabeta was entirely edible and very crispy. Large bed of rice, puréed ginger, and a delicate dashi-soy sauce. Truffle Edamame and Sushi rolls were good. Tuna bolognese with spaghetti in a light tomato sauce. Oyster shooters had a good proportion of spiciness with a raw oyster. The special Modern Sushi brought 5 Goteburg Sausage Rolls, an inverted Musubi with salty fried sausage encasing rice. Many folks bring coolers of beer or wine to complement the food.
