Noticed everything that you add brisket to was an additional $8 per order. Kinda pricey, but Hawai'i. Ordered a 1 choice with a side and added on a homemade sausage link. Selected the homemade Mac and cheese as a side as that's classic and waited a bit for my food... I don't remember the actual cost but it was around $30 for my plate after everything was said and done... Got my food and found a table. Opened it up and was immediately underwhelmed. The brisket looked dry and was from the day before. The sausage looked mid. The Mac and cheese looked extremely loose. All the items had the slightest smoke... Some folks insist that Carolina style is the way and the light, while others argue that Texas, KC, or Memphis is the true soul of barbecue. I love them all, especially Carolina style pulled pork and KC style brisket, so I'm always psyched to try a BBQ joint I haven't been to yet. I hit up Bearded BBQ for lunch, ordering a 2-meat plate with chicken, pulled pork, and sides of mac 'n cheese and coleslaw. The chicken was succulent and flavorful, with lovely crisped skin. The pork had good flavor but seemed a bit dry. Heavy cream sauce on the slaw overpowered the flavors of the other ingredients. And the mac 'n cheese was saltier than I would have liked. Servings were generous. BBQ sauce is another thing that devotees are passionate about--and often quite partisan--about. I like red sauce for Texas, KC, or Memphis style, and vinegar for Carolina style, especially pulled pork. The sauce here tasted like a hybrid of the 2, which didn't work well for me. All in all, the food was well done and representative of the owner's BBQ philosophy, which is perhaps the most essential aspect of any BBQ place. Amazing BBQ with friendly and quick service! Visited this food truck area in Maui while on vacation. This place lives up to its reputation. The whole family really enjoyed the food. We tried the pulled pork loaded fries, pulled pork loaded Mac n cheese, beef loaded fries and link. Favorite was the pulled pork but beef was great too. Very Barky and flavorful. I will say with the Mac n cheese it seems a little salty for my taste, but it didn't stop me from eating it. I would still order it again. Portions are large and easily shareable. Prices for island food were affordable, three adults ate for less than $75 with tip. The owner was really friendly and helpful with suggestions. They also aren't open everyday of the week, check yelp info on the business before going. A few things to note, we came later in the day so some items were out. We were so excited to get bbq food here in Kahului. We enjoyed the first time we had Bearded BBQ when they were at 24 hr fitness parking lot so we decided to try them again. This time we were a bit disappointed. Ordered the brisket plate. It was bland and dry. It had a strange taste to it that I couldn't eat it at all, only 2 bites. We were delighted to see a new food truck in Kula ~ Bearded BBQ. I met Chef Ray earlier this week, and was so pleased he was open on Memorial Day. He prides himself on being a chef, and it shows. How lucky we are to have such a high level of culinary BBQ in our Upcountry area. I placed my order over the phone, and it was hot and ready when I arrived. The generous portion of BBQ pork ribs and smoked chicken in his family pack were tender, moist, smokey and so flavorful. The BBQ sauce had a nice vinegar and mildly spicy flavor which complimented the meats. Kim Chee and tasty homemade pickles accompanied the meats. In this family pack, Chef Ray included all 5 of his sides which were absolutely delicious. This consisted of smokey black beans with pork, nice cole slaw, a rich flavorful Mac and cheese, white rice, and unique tasty smoked eggs. We can't wait to try his homemade sausage and brats on a future visit. Hope he puts beef ribs back on the menu. What a pleasure for Upcountry to have first rate BBQ available. This place has got great sides. Homemade pickles, mac and cheese, super moist cornbread with little kernels of corn, great crunchy coleslaw, yummy kimchi, and da bomb beans.... Honestly, a super simple great dinner could just be a mega slice of corn bread and beans, ya know? But then there's the carnivorous meaty meats; chicken, always moist, the homemade sausages which are super flavorful, pork ribs, crazy good pulled pork, and if you're lucky like me, the super fatty parts of the brisket! And new on the menu are the smash burgers, smashing it all out of the water. This is the more vinegary-bbq-saucy-thing, lots of rub, and lots of smoke. We always order too much, and eat it all. Finger licking, lip smacking goodness. And humble vibes, serving it up out of a truck, in the midst of an auto shop, no easy parking, side of the road, in Kula. They come with a delicious dry rub and taste amazing by itself. The bbq sauce is solid - it is light and more vinegar-based. The cornbread is insane- the portion is ginormous and drenched in honey. Had the beef shoulder brisket and a sausage. The meat was tender and tasty, above average, and the price point was fair. However, although I enjoyed the vinegar based sauce, it was not my favorite and would probably ask that it not be included in my next visit. It is a place I intend to try again however. The meat was probably a 4/5 but the sides were very disappointing. Cold slaw was decent, but the baked beans were runny and did not have flavor. There was also added store bought kimchee which is a great idea if the kimchee was good. As a Korean, I am rather judgemental of kimchee, especially store bought MSG based imitation. As a master chef, this kimchee should be homemade and the basic recipes can easily be found on YouTube. Finally, when you eat brisket, where the heck was the pickled pepper? The place has potential, just needs more attention to the sides. Get rid of the jasmine rice place. read more

So I first got to try out some of this great bbq at the Friday night market at Oskie Rice arena a few months ago. They were sold out of almost everything but I did get to try out the chicken and the home made sausage. I have tried out a lot of bbq and this has got to be on my top three and one of my favorite spots on Maui. I love the change of pace with the flavors. You get tangy and Smokey but not overbearing just enough. I really enjoy the flavor of his bbq sauce it is a nice departure from the typical sweet sauces you typically get in Hawai'i and on the west coast. I also like the flavors that the meats have even without the bbq sauce. I have tried the brisket , the chicken, sausage, and the pulled pork. Everything was delicious. I can also vouch for the side dishes. One of my personal favorites are the baked beans and if they have it the corn bread but there are usually more than a few other choices. Also don't miss out on the sweet tea even this is infused with a nice smokiness. The service has always been top notch and I have had the pleasure of eating here several times and I enjoy both dining here and taking my food to go. If the weather is nice which it usually is in Kula you can eat at one of the tables that are set up other wise you can always get it to go. I have always left here a happy satisfied customer. It is good food for a fair price. We usually stop by when we are out running errands but it's definitely worth taking a drive . read more
