There's nothing like an evening filled with hanging with friends surrounded by a pile of meat. Which is exactly how my Sunday evening was spent hanging out at Gen! Arrived around 7pm on a Sunday and were super silly and didn't put in a reservation beforehand, so we had to wait about 30-40 minutes before securing a table (pro tip: GET A RESERVATION! Sunday night is family night, so it will be tough just being able to simply walk in without a wait). After a beer at another location, we got the glorious text from Gen saying our table was ready, so we scrambled to get back ~30minutes later. We were seated and were met with Arvin, our incredible server. Since we all have been there, he didnt have to go through the rigamarole of telling us how to our nght would go, so we got to orderin! First off, the menu is HUUUUUUUUGE. There are so many options to choose from and we got so many things. My personal favorites were: Kimchi fried rice w/ Cheese - so flavorful with a little bit of kick (i love the spicy) Corn Cheese - because of course Spicy Pork bulgolgi - Again Spicy Honey spicy bulgolgi - This surprised me at how much i liked this. So good They even serve my favorite sake here (Kikusui) which was excellent! Great night over at Gen! Arvin, our server was amaxing, gave us lots of recommendations and treated us really well. This was a bit of a going away dinner for myself, but I know that there are tons of other locations of Gen! I have been coming to this Gen location ever since it opened, so there's definitely some nostalgia tied to this place. On a busy Saturday evening, expect the usual 45-60 minute wait. We ordered from the regular menu. The brisket seemed leaner than I remember and didn't taste as high quality as it used to. The pork belly was cut way too thick, I prefer thinner slices so you can get a better char and crisp texture. The galbi marinade also felt a little off this time, slightly too sweet and missing that smoky charred flavor. That said, the service was above average and surprisingly quick despite how busy it was. Honestly, one of the main reasons I still come here is because there aren't many KBBQ options in Ventura County unless you're willing to drive out farther. read more

I went in last week of February on a Saturday night solo, was seated right away, off to a great start but... we had a a situation were I became invisible, service wasn't was expected. Things were slow, eye contact made but wasn't getting service. I talked politely to a GM named Era. I explained my experience since being seated & I was seated right by the kitchen. But yet I wasn't getting any attention. I had a few things I got to eat but after awhile I was then was leaving, & just wanted to let her know there wholes & what my experience was. After she said she would take care of it & don't worry. She sincerely apologized for my experience, she wasn't happy about it. I thanked her & headed back to my table to gather my things. She then made it a point to come back, to my table were I was to apologies again, she was busy at the time doing multiple things. BUT this lady came back! & remembered my name, she was so nice. ERA, BEST GM! She genuinely felt bad about things. She said not only was she taking care of the bill, BUT! She said "I want you to come back & ask for me & I'm going to take care of you" I was surprised but impressed by her costumer service. It was pure, just out of nowhere. I thanked her & went on my way. Now .. The next week, I did go back, asked for Era, she remembered me & sat me personally right away. She was ON IT! It was Night & Day! This was by far my best experience, this is one she expects from all her staff. She greeted me with open arms compt my meal & my waitress Teresa was amazing as well! some of the lowest quality meat you will see in your life. it was a struggle for me to eat this, even dunked in sauce. that image is beef, but you can't tell because it has no marbling at all. the most unappetizing food and setting. our bbq went out three times, until the manager finally came to fiddle with it. meanwhile, the meat on the grill had been sitting there half-cooked for 10 minutes. i told them we are not eating it, and they tried to argue at first that we would need to pay a leftover fee even though their bbq didnt work and the meat was repulsive. i went here because my boyfriend wanted to go somewhere cheap for a gathering - but even for the price, i regret it. you are so much better off paying more in koreatown. bad, lazy service, horrible meat quality, and just a chaotic, tacky atmosphere with slippery/sticky floors. never again! read more

Used to come here quite often but my last visit really ruined it for me. I paid with card and tipped my server Marlon 20% in cash and yet he tipped himself in my card. Always keep your receipts because I wasn't aware servers there were stealing money. Wish I could get my 20% cash tip back since Marlon felt the need to tip himself on my card. We went during the week around 2 pm so there wasn't a long wait but I have seen people waiting to get in during the weekend. We were lucky and got a great server. The place looks clean. As far as the menu goes, you can choose the regular all you can eat (29.99 per person) or you can upgrade to VIP for $20 more per person. VIP let you enjoy more meats and a drink. Have in mind that as part of the all you can't eat, you aren't allowed to take food home. (If you need to take something home you can order a la carte) You will get full, so come prepared to eat a lot. Appetizers and the sides are included with both regular or VIP. I previously left a 3-star review the last time I was here, and unfortunately I had the same issue again this time. We were served by Maribel, and once again, she forgot to bring out items we ordered. We came to celebrate our friend's birthday because he especially loves the kimchi at this place. Right from the start, we requested 4 extra sides of kimchi because the portions are quite small and our friend is obsessed with them, along with the rest of our usual order. Halfway through the meal, everything else came out except the 4 kimchi sides. I noticed her checking on her other tables multiple times, but she never stopped by ours. The only time she came back was after all her other tables had already gotten rice, just to ask how many rice orders we had, even though we had clearly told her at the beginning. When she finally came back, we asked for 5 kimchi sides this time because our friend specifically wanted to eat it with the meat we ordered, but by then the meat was already gone. She brought out only 3, which still wasn't what we asked for. I'm not sure why they are being so stingy with side dishes. I understand being careful with meat since people might not finish it, but the side dishes are so tiny and can be finished extremely fast. I'm just really disappointed that this happened again, especially since we came from far away for a special occasion and were paying customers. I didn't wanna leave a tip after what she did, but my friend was generous enough to do it anyway, which made me feel awful because he didn't even get what he wanted for his birthday. At least she didn't accuse us of returning the meat we ordered when we never did like last time we came I guess. If I ever come back, I'll definitely be asking to sit in another server's section because this is absolutely unacceptable. read more

Horrible experience toward the end, we arrived at approx 4:03PM at our table . At approx 4:48PM our waitress Juana, ask if we need anything and I informed her "at the moment we are good" next thing you know we get the bill left at our table, mind you we are still cooking our meats and still have food pending to be cooked. Few mins later the host comes over and asks if we are ready to pay. Confused on why if we were still eating and not done. I contacted a manager and asked if their new policy was to give the bill while customer were still eating, cooking and ordering. I was informed that was not the new policy. I told her we have only been here for no more than 45 mins to a 2 hour limit to eat. Discovered that waitress was leaving at 5PM and had told the host to give us the bill so she can get account for her TIP as she was leaving. Felt like we were rushed out by the waitress so she can get her $TIP, we were not done at all. If Juana would have informed I'm leaving at 5pm, and so so will take over I would understand but she just disappeared with no one else serving us. read more

WHERE DO I BEGIN! So me and my family were visiting out of town and was craving kbbq, and Gen was nearby so we decided to go there. At first, we were very skeptical because the reviews weren't the best, but we decided to see for ourselves. Right when we sat, we were instantly greeted by our server, Aaron who took care of us the entire time. He was just so chill, and had everything under control for whatever me and my family needed. He would go out his way and change our grills without even asking, and whenever we were thinking about ordering, he was already there. He recommended us the honey soy beef belly (me and my families favorite meat of the day), as well as other good meats on the menu. The food was amazing, the vibes were great, and me and my family were just confused on why the reviews weren't better. If me and my family stop by again in Oxnard, Gen will be our go to spot. One of the worst dining experiences I've had. After ordering, we waited over 20 minutes, only to have random items we never ordered dropped on our table while the actual dishes came out slowly and randomly. It's a place where you cook your own food, so I'm honestly not sure what exactly takes so long. What's even more ridiculous is that this is an all-you-can-eat place, yet if they bring the wrong items and you don't eat them, they still charge you for it. On top of that, the meat quality was very poor--cheap and not fresh at all. A complete waste of time and money. Absolutely not recommended. read more

I have had many satisfying experiences food wise and service in the past here but the service provided by Juana on today's visit was horrible. She was my server on my previous visit and it was just as bad as today's but i decided to ignore it. Very disappointing in the way ordering was handled, seemed to be judgmental, and also irritated but with other guest complete opposite. I've been to a lot of all-you-can-eat Korean BBQ spots, and anyone who goes to AYCE KBBQ knows the service can really make or break the experience. Our visit to Gen Korean BBQ was honestly one of the smoother and more enjoyable ones we've had, and a huge part of that was because of our server, Aaron. From the moment we sat down, Aaron greeted us with a great attitude and explained how the ordering process worked for the all-you-can-eat menu. For anyone who's been to KBBQ before, you know how important pacing is -- if the server isn't attentive, you can end up waiting forever between rounds. Aaron made sure that never happened. He was incredibly attentive and always seemed to show up right when we were about to need something. One thing that stood out right away was how on top of the grill management he was. He changed out our grill plates at the perfect times so the meat never burned or stuck, which honestly makes a huge difference when you're ordering multiple rounds. Our table stayed clean, empty plates were cleared quickly, and our drinks were constantly refilled without us having to wave anyone down. Another thing I appreciated was that Aaron was really proactive with the service. Instead of just taking orders and disappearing, he checked in frequently and made sure the next round of meats was coming out at a good pace. That's one of the biggest things at an AYCE Korean BBQ spot -- keeping the flow of food going so you can actually enjoy the experience instead of waiting around. Even though the restaurant was busy, Aaron stayed friendly, upbeat, and professional the entire time. He made the whole experience feel organized and relaxed, which is not always easy to do in a packed KBBQ restaurant with grills going everywhere. Overall, this was one of the better AYCE Korean BBQ experiences we've had in a while, and Aaron's service definitely played a big role in that. If you're coming to Gen Korean BBQ, I'd highly recommend asking for Aaron if you get the chance. Great service like that really elevates the whole meal and makes you want to come back. read more

After coming here at least 3 different times over the year since the last review, I am happy to report that they have fixed the issue over the soft drink excess charge. I am still not happy that they never gave me a full refund over the erroneous drink charge even to this day, hence the -1 star (they only gave me a partial refund). Also, one of the three times I have visited, I waited almost 15+ minutes AFTER I sat down before they checked in with me (it was a shift change and they did apologize). However, the past 3 times that I've visited it was an amazing experience. The ambiance was nice as they replaced the previously hard wooden bench with padded bench. Everything looked clean, even the restroom. The food was still 29.99 for AYCE. The meat quality of brisket, galbi, beef belly, pork belly, and pork cheek were all delicious and appropriately portioned. The waiters were very attentive, even showing me the charge of the drink on their touch screen, promising that they will never overcharge. Additionally, they kept making sure I was happy by checking in regularly. They brought out everything I asked, even making sure the side dishes were appropriately refilled as with my drinks. When walking around The Collection, chances are you're smelling the aroma of some meat cooking. It's probably Gen KBBQ. I can never pass by without smelling all the indoor grills Grill'n up some grub. Menu has changed since I've been here last. But the food is pretty good to me considering how much you you spend here. There is an All Day Menu ($29.99), & there's now a new addition to the menu Premium ($49.99). I've only tried the regular menu so I can't comment on the Premium menu. Just know, there's more Premium meats to choose from. Our server this evening was Eduardo Aka Lalo. Eduardo was an Awesome server. He kept checking on us if we needed anything & was readily available when we wanted to order more items. Not just him, but the other servers/workers were on top of our Grill Changes. Keep it up Lalo you're a 5/5!! It helps if you have someone in your group that knows what to order. It also helps if at least 1 person knows how to cook & knows how to cook meat properly. One who knows not to over cook or undercook meat too. I've tried most of the cooked appetizers. I liked the ones I've tried & even had to order extra Bec everyone liked it. (See Appetizer Pics). Only thing that was different this visit, was the Jap Chae (Glass Noodles). Not sure if it was the noodles or the taste, I didn't care for them. 2 stars for the overall experience. The meats were mostly great (except the actual sirloin steak - lots of touch spitters. The Bulgogi was the best. But the service was very poor. I think the manager sat us, and then started to wait on us because no one else was on the floor. He didn't explain the concept very well, and then a variety of other servers took over. We had to request our order multiple times, sometimes forgotten, and then other times we got double-orders which we couldn't eat. We just didn't feel like we had anyone dedicated to us. Plus, it gets SO SMOKEY in there. My wife's hair smelled like smoke for the next two days and the floor was slippery due to a lack of proper ventilation. First off, shout out to Anais! Anais, you were crucial to our quick lunch date getaway. With your advice on helping us to pick out what we had in mind, hubby and I had a pleasant and fun lunch. Much needed, indeed. It's been a minute dining at Gen and with that said, it seems like the menu changes at times. There are now upgrades that can be added for premium, with a hefty $20 per person at your party. It is ALL or NOTHING so go with this in mind if you plan to get premium, everyone has to get it. If one person decides they don't want it, you will not be able to upgrade- hope that makes sense! They serve instant ramen and we tried it for an additional $8. As ramen lovers, while it wasn't bad, it isn't something we would order again. Everything else was great and it helped that our items came out in single servings so that we would be able to order more variety and apps. Definitely get the vegetables if that's your jam, opt for some extra jalapeños and garlic to flavor your meat. Order something fatty so you can oil down your grill prior to cooking to prevent your meat from getting stuck onto the grill. read more
