I'm going to GEN on 11/21/14 with a large party of over 15 people so I'll write my review of the food, service & experience soon
    Rick S.

I still like Gen, but it feels today that the cuts of beef seem inferior to previous visits. The galbi/kalbi short ribs has more fat content not trimmed and some of the meats has more tendons and steaks are bland and tougher cuts of beef. The service was fine. At the end, it was filling and appetizing overall, so I just hope this was an exception to the former norm of high quality beef and not a trend or new normal.

I used to love this place. We've been coming here for at least 10 years since it first opened. Over the years I feel like there's better places out there or the service is just isn't the way it used to be. The food is fine. It's not amazing, but it does the job. This is great if you're on the low carb keto diet because you can get all the protein you want They have a wide variety of menu items. The most recent additions we tried was the cilantro lime rice and the mango sticky rice. Both were pretty good. As far as proteins, I like: the brisket, beef short rib, garlic pork belly, bulgogi, and shrimp. I rarely get the chicken because it takes a while to cook and normally when I come, I come with people who are starving and eat fast. It's usually a casual outing when we go here, so I never really go out of my way to put on fresh clothes because you leave smelling like bbq. During our last visit, it was pretty disappointing. We were there for almost 2.5 hours including the 20-30 minute wait time. And not because we were hungry, but because we kept waiting for the food we ordered. The rice paper took nearly 2 hours to come. They need to work on better communication and better food prep. I'll probably come back but the service this last time was quite disappointing.

We hadn't dined here in years came in for a late lunch. The hostess was very nice taking us to our very comfortable table. The waiter came over shortly thereafter. We ordered all you can eat combo. It was really filling and the choices were right on. While the Beef Bulgogi was my favorite, everything was great it was a great value for the offerings Our waiter and server were highly attentive offering us more good until we were completely full. We really need to go back again soon to enjoy this feast of foods.

Absolutely dirty, disgusting environment. Wife and I had not been back to this location in years but were craving KBBQ so we stopped by for lunch. Was sat down at a dirty table with food bits and grease around the table from the last patrons. Then they provide discolored rice paper wrap that looked like it was either really old or left out for a really long time. The worst part: the serving utensils they plopped on our table -- the scissors had a nasty fur ball and hair clenched at tip (see photo). My wife and I didn't hesitate -- we just walked out without taking a single bite. We knew this just wasn't the same quality of Gen's that we've come to expect and still get from other locations like SGV. Be careful folks. If this is how they maintain their utensils who knows how badly they handle their food. P.S. There seems to be a lot of fake 5-star reviews on their page from Yelp users with a history of just one review. Will be reporting this to Yelp.

I been to a couple gens and this one was probably one of the better ones. All fresh and quality meats and veg. I loved the mango tango dessert it was a warm crunchy wonton with sticky rice and a mango sauce. It was VERY packed but our waiter was trying his best. They had to Put in our orders a couple times for them to actually come. And then the grills would be either really low or too high. We kept having to ask for them to be adjusted.

The place is dirty service is terrible!! Gave us broken plates and the appetizers were cold

During my first visit to this Gen location, I found the meats to be of high quality, with the Premium Steak standing out as my favorite. The Galbi was also notably flavorful. However, the Bulgogi and Brisket were just average. While the side dishes were satisfactory, I have experienced a wider variety at other Korean BBQ establishments, such as macaroni salad and Steamed Egg Pot, which I wish were available here. The sauces were standard and lacked strong flavor. The Cheese Kimchi Fried Rice was exceptional, ranking among the best I've had. Unfortunately, the Pineapple was less flavorful here compared to the Cerritos location, which was disappointing as I anticipated it to be a perfect end to my meal. The service is commendable, and the establishment maintains a high level of cleanliness. There is free parking everywhere since it is located in a huge shopping complex. The pricing is good, with children's prices being half of the adult rates. I will definitely return.

Went to Gen to celebrate twins birthdays with 7 people. The food was pretty decent but the service was kind of slow. When you have a large party the food goes quickly once you receive the order and cook it, then you have to wait for a while to place your next orders. The restaurant air was saturated with grease, seems like they don't have much ventilation for all the grills that are being used. The floors were covered with grease and make it slippery. Overall it's a fun experience!

Gens menu as of 2/19/24 - Hotteok, Korean sweet pancake (no allergy notice or list of ingredients). BEWARE!
    Donna A.

Came back today, 2/8/26 to celebrate my birthday month. To our surprise, it wasn't busy on a Sunday lunch time. The normal wait during Saturday and Sunday is always at least 30-90 minutes. Then we realized it's Super Bowl Sunday. If you're like us who doesn't like to wait to get seated, come during these times. Service as always was top notch by Aris. Always friendly, quick to get anything we request for, patient and always a good experience when we are seated in Aris' area. We love the honey soy beef belly, kalbi, honey chicken, japchae, mandu, bulgogi fries which is new and delicious! Must try new item. Gens is always a favorite place to celebrate our family's birthdays and any major events. They always satisfy and never disappoint! Also, glad they added peanuts warning on the sweet pancake. They always play good songs too!

    Jenny K.

We were craving Korean bbq and we always see Gen having a big line so we decided to give this place a try! We get inside and we were kind of shocked how big the restaurant was! But we felt the floors being sticky and we didn't get a clean vibe.. we sat down and started ordering right away. We ordered variety of meats throughout the night along with appetizers and we were not impressed. The only meat we thought was decent was their thinly sliced brisket. We didn't like any of the side orders we got and didn't like their sweet cinnamon pancake for dessert. Honestly if youre looking for value over quantity it's a pretty good deal. But if you want better meat quality, go somewhere else

This was the menu right after they brought it to the table.

The first time I ate here, it took maybe 20-25 minutes for me to get my food. This time, I had my food in around 10 minutes. I was very impressed with this big decrease in wait time. This time I tried the new Hokkaido cream pasta, which tasted super fresh and made to order. The cream was warm and rich without feeling over the top like some other cream-based pasta sauces from Italian/American places. I liked the addition of spinach and mushrooms as well. The restaurant is in a food court with a few other options, and a decent amount of seating. It's also inside of a grocery store, so if you're with a picky group, everyone could theoretically order something different and eat together. I remember I was a little put off by the anime branding of the restaurant at first (it seemed a little childish to me) but Pasta Stories is really a solid wafu pasta place, and I love that they focus on different regional flavors of Japan. Prices are very affordable as well, with most pastas being around $15 and under.

I personally have tried the following: Hokkaido Cream Pasta (newest addition as of late) Fukuoka Mentaiko Butter Pasta Kyoto Matcha Cream Pasta (one of my favorite dishes here - pair with salmon for a strong, umami flavor profile) Iwate Triple Mushroom Pasta Okinawa Pork Ragu Spaghetti (THE number 1 pick, however was not on the menu when I visited last) Osaka American Wagyu Meat Sauce There is a strong attention to Japanese flavors fusing with traditional Italian pasta dishes and are all made with love and care. I always recommend this place to friends and family, I can't get enough of it!

That was bad, in any case, I ordered the kalua and shrimp. The shrimp was extra, but was pretty good. I am glad I ate right away since the shrimp was not overtly deep fried (this means the sauce on top was going to drench it, making it a soggy deep fried batter if I did not eat right away). The sauce it comes with is not bad, it seemed like a flavorful batter. The pickled onions were not a palet cleanser, but was sweet and went well with the kalua pork. The pork itself was definitely on the saltier side, I would not recommend eating this without the rice! It was that salty! Together it was good. They put on a lot of rice, no substitutes like Mac salad unfortunately. But what was bad is that the shrimp is extra but they put a bed of rice underneath so you don't really get as much protein as you would like.

I was on a solo lunch and looking forward to the puffs! To say they are "perfect" seems insufficient. They were fried incredibly well, hot, crunchy, tasty, but never greasy. And these little puffs were filled with minced beef, potatoes, and seasoning! For my main dish, I chose the dragon noodles (pad thai) with chicken. All the veggies in the dish were cooked perfectly, nothing too mushy, just the right amount of crunch/bite to the cabbage, broccoli, and carrots. And the chicken was chunky! And while I loved everything about the dish, the sprinkling of the crushed peanuts was *chef's kiss*. There's no skimping on those peanuts here. As I write this I'm excited for the leftover noodles waiting for me. When you walk into Sausalido you really do feel welcomed. The space is unassuming in the best way possible.
