We ordered to go. This is four meat+3 sides meal - comes with Japchae and rice. We love in person more, but this does it in a pinch!

This review is strictly for ordering delivery to go through a third-party delivery service. My Daughter and I were craving Gen and we happened to see a great BOGO deal offered through one of the delivery services so we said Yes, Please! because we just didn't have time to go out on this particular night. We were amazed at the different options. There is a 2 meats/2 sides size and we went with the larger 4 meats/3 sides. It's super cool because you get to pick from a wide variety of meats and you choose the sides that you want and even the sauces or green salt, even radish wraps for when you are eating it. It comes with a side of steamed rice and we were surprised by a bonus serving of Japchae. We chose Bulgogi, brisket, garlic chicken, and samgyeopsal (pork belly). The first three translated really well and were still warm and the right texture after riding in the car. The chicken even had some delicious char on it! The samgyeopsal was a teeny bit dry, but luckily, I had some Korean barbecue sauce at home that I dipped it into. Would we order this again? Definitely, it was very reasonable and super quick and tasted great. Does this mean we will never go to the restaurant again? Absolutely not because we still love the whole experience of sitting down and having conversations while we have fun trying different meats and veggies!

The food was good. Always good. Had bulgogi, Hawaiian steak, premium steak and plenty of it. All the sides were good; rice, potatoes and kimchi. I was able to get seated fairly quick. Our server was busy with all her tables so service was a little slow. That's normal for any restaurant so no biggie. It's a little dark inside and the music was good. Felt like I was in a club. Gens is the only place I go for KBBQ. Thank you. See you soon.

I'm going to GEN on 11/21/14 with a large party of over 15 people so I'll write my review of the food, service & experience soon

I still like Gen, but it feels today that the cuts of beef seem inferior to previous visits. The galbi/kalbi short ribs has more fat content not trimmed and some of the meats has more tendons and steaks are bland and tougher cuts of beef. The service was fine. At the end, it was filling and appetizing overall, so I just hope this was an exception to the former norm of high quality beef and not a trend or new normal.

Haven't been to this location in years and had a great experience! Everything was smooth from the start. Ashley the host was kind and welcoming, and the staff stayed on top of everything all night -- making sure we had everything we needed in a really genuine way Angelo was our main server and did an awesome job, and Jonathan was just as impressive. Both were hustling, taking care of every table while still being attentive to us--keeping our drinks filled, anticipating grill changes, and making sure everything was smooth Big shoutout to Brian who overheard it was our first visit and made us their special server sauce, such a thoughtful touch! The galbis with the sauce was that sauce was the highlight of our night, but the peach soju hits! Really appreciate Angelo, Jonathan, Brian and the rest of the staff for making our visit a great one. We'll definitely be back soon!

I used to love this place. We've been coming here for at least 10 years since it first opened. Over the years I feel like there's better places out there or the service is just isn't the way it used to be. The food is fine. It's not amazing, but it does the job. This is great if you're on the low carb keto diet because you can get all the protein you want They have a wide variety of menu items. The most recent additions we tried was the cilantro lime rice and the mango sticky rice. Both were pretty good. As far as proteins, I like: the brisket, beef short rib, garlic pork belly, bulgogi, and shrimp. I rarely get the chicken because it takes a while to cook and normally when I come, I come with people who are starving and eat fast. It's usually a casual outing when we go here, so I never really go out of my way to put on fresh clothes because you leave smelling like bbq. During our last visit, it was pretty disappointing. We were there for almost 2.5 hours including the 20-30 minute wait time. And not because we were hungry, but because we kept waiting for the food we ordered. The rice paper took nearly 2 hours to come. They need to work on better communication and better food prep. I'll probably come back but the service this last time was quite disappointing.

We hadn't dined here in years came in for a late lunch. The hostess was very nice taking us to our very comfortable table. The waiter came over shortly thereafter. We ordered all you can eat combo. It was really filling and the choices were right on. While the Beef Bulgogi was my favorite, everything was great it was a great value for the offerings Our waiter and server were highly attentive offering us more good until we were completely full. We really need to go back again soon to enjoy this feast of foods.

Ok, before I get into the incredible food options and great prices, let's hit the MAJOR Highlight, and that would be the service!! The service is the best I have ever encountered! We had Brian, Moi, and Benji, and they were over the top awesome! They were super attentive, and we never waited more than 30 seconds for anything, and this was peak time on a Friday night. Thank you all for helping us to celebrate an amazing 27th Anniversary! Now to the part you are waiting for, the food! First it's All You Can Eat, and the options, quality of the meats, and the portion sizes are amazing! They offered us everything from Pork Belly to Long Ribs, Spicy Calamari to Wagyu Beef. What amazing dining option this was. Everything was so tasty, and so fresh and high quality. This is a great place for a couple, it a couple dozen friends and family! I cannot recommend this location enough!! If you are looking for a great spot in Torrance, or any of the other locations, I would say Go For It!! Again, thank you God a Great Celebration!

    Nasty!!

Absolutely dirty, disgusting environment. Wife and I had not been back to this location in years but were craving KBBQ so we stopped by for lunch. Was sat down at a dirty table with food bits and grease around the table from the last patrons. Then they provide discolored rice paper wrap that looked like it was either really old or left out for a really long time. The worst part: the serving utensils they plopped on our table -- the scissors had a nasty fur ball and hair clenched at tip (see photo). My wife and I didn't hesitate -- we just walked out without taking a single bite. We knew this just wasn't the same quality of Gen's that we've come to expect and still get from other locations like SGV. Be careful folks. If this is how they maintain their utensils who knows how badly they handle their food. P.S. There seems to be a lot of fake 5-star reviews on their page from Yelp users with a history of just one review. Will be reporting this to Yelp.

I been to a couple gens and this one was probably one of the better ones. All fresh and quality meats and veg. I loved the mango tango dessert it was a warm crunchy wonton with sticky rice and a mango sauce. It was VERY packed but our waiter was trying his best. They had to Put in our orders a couple times for them to actually come. And then the grills would be either really low or too high. We kept having to ask for them to be adjusted.

Worth it! Worth it! WORTH IT!…read more True Kagoshima wagyu, A5-grade. If try it, and find you don't like it, then you should be honest with yourself and realize wagyu ain't for you. 24-seats, and they surely fill up during the weekends. The weeknights are more down tempo, and easier to get a seat reserved. The whole experience is the first place to really remind me of Japan, and really stab that dagger of yearning deep into your guts of wanting to go back. And eat. It's the kind of attention and hospitality you get from like, a locals spot in Kyoto. If you can handle all the rich fatty goodness, and you crave calories, the premium menu at $90 should do the job. I opted for the $10 supplement of A5 wagyu sushi... and honestly, as the last course before dessert, I was all wagyu'd out. Like my gallbladder didn't have any bile to spare to deal with the absolute rich, fatty goodness. But $10 for 2 pieces of wagyu sushi is an EXCELLENT deal, considering most other sushi spots will easily charge you $20+++ for the luxury. One of the surprises for me was how good their house curry is. I will tell you, I am not a curry person. I grew up on Thai curry. I've had Indian curry. British Indian curry. Japanese curry from all over the place, especially multiple times from Curry House will unfortunately perished during the disease lockdown of 2020. Never cared for it, simply tolerated it curry because family cooked it or a friend wanted it. But curry here is the first where I could go back for 2nds or 3rds, or even go out of my way to drive back here and get more. It's so uniquely harmonious and tantalizing in all the right ways. But every course, every cut of beef, even the USDA Prime stuff, worked for me. And the side of condiments is just... it should be the standard everywhere. Salt. Yuzu Kosho. Grated garlic. Red pepper powder. Season to your personal taste, to already lush, melt-in-your-mouth luscious beef. I'm at the place in my life where I do not need to eat "all that I can." That stage where in life where you mature, and where what you require... "your tastes are simple. Only the BEST." I've had different wagyu beef courses that easily cost $200+, in places in LA which we will not whisper about in hushed tones. Wagyu Butcher bests those places, a bitchsmacks the hot diarrhea shit out of the competition in preparation, quality, service, and value. I'd easily be a regular here, even when it's over an hour's drive across multiple freeways, far and away from me.

I had seen some social media posts raving about this place & with this being located in the South Bay area, I knew it was going to be worth the drive. There are 3 different courses to choose from, Tenma Omakase $50 - appetizers of pickled vegetables, beef soup, 5 varieties of wagyu meat, curry rice, today's dessert. Butcher Omakase $75 - appetizers of pickled vegetables, beef soup, US Wagyu sashimi, 7 varieties of meat, curry rice, today's dessert. Wagyu Omakase $90 - appetizers of pickled vegetables, beef soup, US Wagyu sashimi, 7 varieties of meat, curry rice, Chef's special dessert. You have a choice of beef curry or upgrading for A5 Wagyu sushi $10 & adding uni for another $10. I got the Butcher Omakase with the A5 Wagyu sushi topped with uni. They bring the big slab of wagyu sushi & literally torch it to give it an added flavor. It was definitely good but I would actually skip the uni as the creamy flavor of uni & the fatty wagyu flavor cancel each other out. It diminishes the greatness of 2 amazing ingredients. The beef soup is a consommé made from the wagyu bones/trimmings & it has such a richness, the bold umami flavor really leaves you speechless. The pickled vegetables and kimchi were okay. I would have preferred spinach goma-ae or something like a small cucumber & wakame salad. Each course of meat was slightly different. There were 3 different cuts of tongue, all good but the cut from the underside of the tongue was a bit chewy. As each course came, the meat quality & flavor kept getting better! All of us agreed that the best & the star of the Omakase is/was the Wagyu Sukiyaki!! The sweet smell of the sukiyaki sauce drizzled over the wagyu as it sizzled on the grill was drool-worthy. Once it was quickly cooked, the wagyu is dipped into the whipped sukiyaki cream! It looked so weird but it was absolutely heavenly!! You can order small bowl of ramen or extra cuts of different wagyu but the Sukiyaki Wagyu is not available a la carte or as an extra serving. Darn it! The dessert was a Hoji-cha purin (pudding or more like flan). I've never had Hoji-cha purin & it was actually as good if not better than matcha to end the scrumptious meal. The service there was top notch, each dish was explained well and they cooked the meat quickly with attention to detail, good presentation. Our waitress even came out from behind the counter to take pictures of our extended family by the wall sign next to the front door! Wagyu Butcher has a wrap around rectangular counter seating only so it is a bit tricky to seat in a big group. We had 6 of us and it was hard to have a conversation with everyone. The only problem I saw with this seating arrangement was how they accommodate guests in wheelchairs or special mobility devices. Maybe they have a table in the back corner that I didn't see from where I sat. We all want to go back again for the next special occasion dinner! It was worth every minute of the drove down & more!!

This restaurant opened over 40 years ago in the 1980s. They have not changed their seasonings or recipes since then. A lot of their sauces and kimchee is made in house (and has not changed in over 40 years). This is probably the best Japanese BBQ experience I've ever had and I've had A LOT of BBQ experiences. My favorites are items you typically cannot get anywhere else. Their raw beef liver sashimi and their raw minced beef are amazing. It's really hard to find these creations. If you like liver, then you'll be an instant fan. If you're a little squeamish then you can always grill it a bit before you eat it lol Their cuts of meat are also a league above the rest. I loved them all! Their wagyu tongue, negi tongue, gokujo kalbi, tokujo ro-su, and pork belly are all worth writing home about. They also serve vegetables and salad to go with the BBQ. We also tried their yukkejan soup which is their spicy beef soup. It was very tasty. Savory and not too salty. Very well balanced. I'd eat this alone on a cold rainy day. The ambiance is busy with moderate noise. Lots of Japanese locals were there that night and were simply having an amazing time socializing. Overall 10/10. Definitely coming back!

I remember really liking the food, so I'm not sure why it took me until yesterday to finally check this place out. It was absolutely amazing. They nailed every aspect of the dining experience. Let's start with the service. It was phenomenal. The restaurant staff members were pleasant and efficient. All the dishes came out very fast. While I cooked most of the meats on the grill, there were some items that were carefully prepared table side by staff. I enjoyed the ambiance of this place. There was music softly playing in the background. The room temperature was cool - an absolute necessity when cooking food right over open flames in front of you. I ordered the Manpuku Premium set. I loved the food, like a lot. Here's a run down of almost everything I had: Manpuku Salad: It was fantastic. I'm used to eating a Japanese salad with the generic carrot ginger dressing. You know what I'm talking about. This one had a nice sesame oil flavor to it. Not sweet, more savory. A refreshing change from the norm. U.S. Kobe Filet: This was probably my least favorite cut of meat of the day as it wasn't as marbled and flavorful as the rest of them. However, it was soft as butter - exactly what you would expect from a premium piece of tenderloin steak. Seared Beef Nigiri: It came with 4 pieces, but we ordered an extra two pieces. The nigiri was delightful. Imagine eating the perfect piece of toro nigiri except it was made of highly marbled Wagyu beef. U.S. Kobe Sukiyaki: This was easily the best thing I had here, and that's saying a lot since I had a lot of great food. While I was allowed to cook the rest of the cuts of meat on my own, this one was specially prepared by a restaurant worker since the meat had to be cooked and prepared in a certain way to maximize the flavor experience. The meat, when dipped in the raw egg yolk was pure bliss. Fried Rice: It came out sizzling hot in a stone bowl. The fried rice was okay, but absolutely necessary for the meal. A lot of the meats were very fatty. The fried rice did a bang up job soaking up the oiliness of the meats when consumed together. U.S. Kobe Boneless Short-rib, US Kobe Chuck Flap, and Miso Skirt Steak: These were all home runs. They were tender, fatty, and incredibly tasty. My favorite of this trio was the short rib since it was the most marbled of the bunch. Garlic Edamame: I've had my share of edamame in my life, prepared in a variety of different ways. I used to like how a restaurant called Backhouse in the Santa Monica area used to serve their garlic edamame. It was my favorite edamame around. Sadly, that establishment no longer exists. This restaurant's edamame reminded me of the Backhouse edamame. It was perfectly warm and flavored. Simply outstanding. For dessert, they let you select from a list of options. I had macha ice cream, as that is my favorite flavor of ice cream at a Japanese restaurant. It was very creamy and not overly sweet. Best part was the ice cream bowl was chilled. Kept the ice cream cold. It was the perfect way to end a fantastic dining experience.

I don't remember the tea being so expensive. I wouldn't mind if it was actually good tea. Hmmm, we probably won't be returning. What we have gotten in the past & liked: namul ナムル, mushrooms キノコ, veg 野菜, jidori chicken thigh 地鶏もも肉, shrimp エビ (delicious), boneless short rib, wagyu... the salads are all good too & so was the egg soup.

Still this is my favorite yakuniku place in the south bay. Why? Because the tongue kalbi is amazing! So is the kurobuta sausage! Don't miss out on these when you come here.

The quality of the…read morebeef has always been solid and while I still think places like Manpuku are a little more memorable, Yamaya has never really disappointed me. These days, though, it's lunch that keeps bringing me back. In a city where fifteen dollars barely buys a sandwich, Yamaya somehow serves one of the best lunch specials in the South Bay. It isn't trying to impress you with theatrics. It simply gets the fundamentals right. The yakiniku is grilled just enough to pick up a little char without drowning in sauce. A few thicker pieces can be slightly chewy, but the flavor is consistently balanced. The salad is simple, the miso soup is comforting even if it's usually closer to warm than hot and then there's the rice. The rice deserves its own paragraph. Perfectly cooked, unlimited refills and paired with unlimited mentaiko and house pickles, it's the kind of combination that makes you slow down and wonder whether another bowl is really such a bad idea. It's simple food executed with enough confidence that it doesn't need to hide behind unnecessary complexity. The service has been a little inconsistent over the years, but on this visit it reminded me why hospitality still matters. Our server was warm, attentive and genuinely welcoming without feeling rehearsed. The restaurant was calm, a Japanese family chatted quietly at the next table and for an hour lunch felt refreshingly unhurried. Is this the best yakiniku I've ever had? No. Is it one of the best values I've found in Los Angeles? Absolutely. Some restaurants chase spectacle. Yamaya earns repeat customers instead. That's a much harder thing to build. One of the lunch deals I recommend most often in the South Bay.
