The food is will always be delicious. The Torrance location is a zoo! The company operates this location as a circus that serves teppan food. Please don't go here if you, unless you want drama, and bias Management.

Through out the years, I hav e been to Benihana. When I did not know much about the foodie-verse this place was a theatrical display of flavor in flame. But now that I have earned my stars and stripes, this place is a chain restaurant with a gimmick. But when I went the last time, the gimmick felt fresh, and exciting. It not feel like I was seeing it for the first time, but it feel like I was seeing it through a fresh perspective. I guess, in. a way I felt Jamais vu--- the notion, offered by the French, that something familiar feels new. My friend Conrad had his birthday dinner here, and I went to help celebrate his place on earth plus 35 years. I got there a tiny bit late. I got there, and I was hungry. Like I slept, skipped, breakfast and lunch, and I was desperate for food hungry. I also had the task of meeting his family for the first time, and I was not in a place to mingle with glee. As soon, as Diego (a server of acclaim) brought the gyoza I went in deep on them. Conrad's brother in law understood, my hunger was well known by this point. As soon as I had one, I knew I had to eat more of them. In response, I asked Diego to bring more of them, cause I wanted to replenish what I had taken. I did not catch the video, but in one of the pictures, Diego can be seen tending to a big platter full of miso soups. His hand is hovering above, it almost willing the platter to stay, in a Jedi kind of way. What I wanted to capture (on video) was the struggle that this young man had as he placed the platter on the corner of the Hibachi, all super carefully, like I felt his sweat as he did it, in a second hand struggle kind of way. His faced showed focused worried, his body showed careful restrain. This effort alone qualified him for applause, as I would not want to teeter a platter of Miso unto the corner of a table. And Diego did it with effort that showed. In a way that makes the act imore heroic because some heroes do their work with ease, others do their work with focus and hard intent. I rather root for the second type of hero. The Hibachi show itself was fun, and engaging, but not something that I can enjoy on the regular, the heat of the Hibachi would lose its gleam. My favorite part was when the chef threw eggs into his hat and then a chic came out--- a wind up toy. It was clever. And if I had the eyes and innocence of a child, I think I would have been more in awe. I am glad that Conrad's family had kids to view and smile upon the chic. The food, although, good is less than solid, more like stable. I did appreciate the miso, and the soup, and the gyoza, but when it moved to the main dishes, they were bland. I had the surf and turf-- steak and lobster. And again, there is not anything necessarily wrong with what I ate, but there is also nothing noteworthy. It stands to reason then, that this place is a spectacle for the eyes, and standard nourishment for the body. It is also important to note that for my self, I was asked to spend 60 dollars in the bill. Would I recommend this place? Yes. Would I recommend it to all? No. This is a place that is a response to a particular question? Where do I go for a meal that seems special but it is not going to demand that I cut my leg to pay for it?

Had a few bad experiences in the past. But I came here once again as I received my birthday certificate. And boy was I surprised. We had a 3pm reservation. We were seated within minutes. Our Chef Daren was very energetic and friendly. One of our waitresses was in training and had another waiter with her helping around. They were very quick and attentive to everyone at the table. I was expecting to be here for a couple of hours. But we were out within 1 hour. They definitely turned things around or I was just really lucky. I hope this will be everyone's experience moving forward.

Benihana Torrance non-apologetically treats melted, burnt, and gasified plastic on the grill surface as "normal". We had 3 kids at the table. The manager said "it happens all the time". Plastic is known to cause cancer and chronic illness when consumed by the human body. We will also report this incident on Benihana's website. Posting here for everyone's awareness. ... Our dining experience raised serious concerns about food safety and management professionalism. After we ordered, our server dropped a plastic container lid onto the hot grill without picking it up immediately, where it began to melt. We were told the chef would take care of it, but no one addressed the situation for nearly an hour. (Yes we waited for an hour after we ordered for the chef to come) During that time, the plastic visibly burned and produced fumes at the center of the grill where all food is being prepared. When a manager eventually came to check on us, we asked about the burnt plastic on the grill. Instead of addressing the plastic or offering an apology, she told us that "plastic melting on the grill happens all the time." She also repeatedly commented that we "sounded aggitated," rather than addressing the situation or taking responsibility. We had to move to another table because the manager DECLINED to take care of the plastic. We should have just left at that point. For your health, please avoid this place at all cost.

Don't bother coming here, rude reception doesn't like her job Took 2hrs to get our food Manager is incompetent, dirty place... Great experience!! It was my first time ever going to a Benihana. I went for lunch on a Thursday with friends. The food was delicious and there was lots of it, enough to take home extras. The highlight was our chef, Jake!! He was lively and funny. You could tell this was his personality and not just an act to put on for us. We had so much fun and everyone from servers to hostess were all kind and accommodating.

Excellent service from Alejandro. You know he is tired, but did his best to entertain. 4 stars due to reservation at 8pm, got seated at 9pm, and cook came at 936pm. Out of salad, we only had 3. We have to wait for the rice too. Left the place around 1130pm already. People really waited, but it's Father's Day! 6-15-2025

We hadn't been here in a few years. The wagyu of the world menu drew us in along with the birthday coupon. We had reservations and were seated promptly upon arrival. My wife ordered the A5 Japanese Tokyo broil and I ordered the American Madami ribeye. Our cook, Earl followed our low sodium diets perfectly. He prepared the wagyu perfectly to our medium rare requests. The onions, shrimp, zucchini and mushrooms were served right off the grill and hot. We were impressed at the wagyu and the Japanese Tokyo Broil was extremely tender and full of flavor. My ribeye was very good too, but I think the Japanese Tokyo Broil was more melt in your mouth tender. The cooking show was good and Earl was fast in preparing our meal. It was a fun experience and the food was great and we enjoyed our dining experience. Finished our dinner with rainbow sherbert. We hope they keep the wagyu of the menu.

Is there a 18-20% service charge for 1,2 or 3 people automatically? Nothings listed?ot told ahead of time? Does this apply to take outs also? Extra sauces etc? Don't they have to tell or warn you of extra costs first?

    so sorry I'm not sure

Is the show included in the promotion for the $39 5 course meal?

    Yes

Wondering is the new add service charge of 20% mark up in the billing is different than tips?

I'm not aware of a 20% service change. For parties or 8 or more they add in an 18% gratuity (which patrons can increase).

What is outdoor dining like? Do they cook outside too?

    No outdoor dining

Is happy hour only offered at the bar?

    Yes

Does standard seating mean they cook in front of you?

    Yes

Can you bring in a cake for a birthday party reservation?

    Yes

Until what time is the lunch menu served?

well, not 100%, but at least until 3pm.

If we wanted to go and have a specific chef, could we request them? If we were flexible could we ask when they're working in order to be seated with them?

We've requested a chef before but they can't guarantee you'll get that chef. If you make reservations online you can note their name on there. The host a told us when we arrived to tell the server. We had 3 different chefs we liked to have a better… Read more

Hello just wondering if you guys allow walk ins?

They might be able to squeeze you in at a grill if you are a party of 1 or 2, but I highly recommend reservations. If you don't care about the grill experience, you should be fine on a weekday.

Has anyone experienced the outdoor dinning? If so was the food prepared in front of you? If not, how did it taste anything different?

We ate there last Thursday evening. Food is prepared inside and brought out to you. It still tasted pretty much the same but was not nearly as hot. If you discover you need something you have to wait for the waiter to show up. Very small eating area… Read more

    Do they have outside dining?

I went last month and they had a tent up for outside dining, but I'm thinking everything is opening back up with social distancing.

Do you still get seated in front of teppan tables? Also, if you're a smaller party (2), do you still have to share a table with others during this quarantine?

The cooks prepared food at a separate table and My party of 2 was seated with a party of 3 and it was a total of 5 at one table. And they seated people at every other table. 🙄

Are they open for curbside pickup during quarantine time?

    Yes they are.

Does your chef make everything you order in front of you or is it just specific items? Also, when you make a reservation, is it guaranteed that you'll be sat at one of the table where the food is prepared in front of you?

Everything in your main meal is prepared in front of you; meats/seafood, fried rice, and vegetables. Only thing that was not, were the salads and some appetizers like tempura, and soups. You will be seated at a cooking table unless you request not… Read more

This is not true. It is often crowded and the wait can be very long. It's in your best interest to make reservations ahead of time if you can. This can also be done by using the Open Table app. It'll show you specific times and dates that are… Read more

There was only one main server taking orders, serving, and cleaning up, so she was very busy. She's definitely rushing all over the place. The restaurant is quite small, so expect a wait when it does get a bit later. We came around 5:30, just 30 minutes after they opened and we still had to wait a bit after the first wave of customers. Once we were seated, we decided to order the American Sliced Beef Don (small size) and the gyutan plate. We were uncertain if the beef don would be good so we went with a small, but wow we should have gotten a large cause it was so good! The beef was extremely soft and the sauce all around tasted really good with the rice and all. The beef tongue was also pretty nice, but a bit tough for me, wish it was more soft chewy! Although, overall flavor was really nice. The beef don especially was really good. There's also a Arcadia location but the prices seem a tad bit cheaper here. Rather than feeling cramped, it feels welcoming and authentic - a place where the focus stays on good food, good drinks, and good company. Over several visits, these have become my favorite dishes: Cabbage Salad with Spicy Sauce - 4/5. Torihei offers two versions of its cabbage salad: one with a garlic sesame dressing and another with a spicy sauce. The garlic sesame version is fine, but the spicy sauce is the clear winner. It features crunchy garlic and chili oil that add texture and depth without overwhelming heat. I would have liked a little more acidity to brighten the dish, but it's still an excellent way to start the meal. Chopped Cucumber with Sesame Oil - 4.5/5. One of my favorite appetizers at Torihei. The cucumbers are smashed rather than neatly sliced, which gives the dish a rustic character and helps the dressing cling to every surface. The addition of tomatoes is a smart touch, contributing acidity and freshness. Combined with the flavorful sesame dressing, it becomes far more interesting than its humble ingredients suggest. Soboro-don - 3/5. This small rice bowl comes topped with ground chicken, a poached egg, and pickles on the side. The rice is cooked well, and the chicken itself is clearly of good quality. However, the ground chicken is surprisingly underseasoned and could use more salt or additional seasoning. Despite that flaw, it's still a comforting dish thanks to the well-prepared rice and silky egg. Beef Tongue Curry Rice - 4/5. Despite its name, this dish eats more like a stew than a traditional Japanese curry. Fortunately, it's very tasty. The sauce is rich and meaty with just a hint of curry spice. At the same time, the beef tongue contributes a buttery texture and luxurious richness. It's hearty, comforting, and one of the more memorable rice dishes on the menu. Beef Tongue Soup - 5/5. This is a clean, balanced soup that showcases restraint. The broth has enough meatiness to be satisfying without becoming heavy, letting other umami flavors come through. The beef tongue itself is tender and rich, making this an excellent side dish to accompany the restaurant's grilled offerings. Yaki Oni - 4.5/5. The grilled rice ball is exceptionally well executed. Though triangular rather than spherical, it achieves the ideal texture contrast: a lightly crunchy exterior with a soft, substantial interior. The surface develops a beautiful golden-brown crust without crossing into burnt territory. It's a simple dish done right and a perfect accompaniment to skewers. Grilled Squid - 3.5/5. The squid is succulent and tender rather than rubbery, which is often the challenge with grilled squid. The flavor is enjoyable, though I would have welcomed a bit more char and grill marks. Pork Belly and Chicken Thigh Yakitori - 3/5. These skewers are solid but not standout. Both were slightly drier than I prefer. The pork belly could benefit from more rendered fat and richness. At the same time, the chicken thigh would be more appealing with a juicier finish. Chicken Hearts and Beef Tongue Yakitori - 4/5. These are among the stronger skewers on the menu. Heavily exercised cuts tend to offer deeper flavor, and both deliver. The chicken hearts have a satisfying richness, while the beef tongue combines robust flavor with pleasant marbling. If you're ordering yakitori, these are better choices than some of the more conventional cuts. Meatball Yakitori - 4.5/5. This is deservedly one of Torihei's signature dishes. The exterior develops an excellent browning and a slight crust, while the interior remains tender, juicy, and intensely meaty. Chicken Kara-age - 3.5/5. The kara-age is good, but it falls just short of greatness. A crispier crust and juicier chicken would elevate it significantly. Still, it's a satisfying version of a classic izakaya staple. Fried Shishito Peppers - 3.5/5. These peppers are mild rather than spicy and develop a pleasant glistening texture when fried. Their slight fibrousness gives them character, making them a simple but enjoyable side dish. Creamy Annin Tofu - 5/5. Available either plain or with green tea syrup, both versions are excellent, though the green tea syrup is the better choice. The texture is closer to a delicate pudding than tofu, and the sweetness is restrained and balanced. It's a deceptively simple dessert that provides a satisfying and elegant finish to the meal. No izakaya experience is complete without alcohol, and Torihei delivers. The sake and shochu selections are solid, offering enough variety to complement the menu. Beer options are mostly limited to familiar Japanese labels, but they pair perfectly with the food. Combined with its cozy atmosphere and solid drink selection, Torihei is the kind of neighborhood izakaya that earns regulars for good reason.
