Decent enough for the price. This used to be two separate salons sharing one space (The Genacelli Salon and The East Studio) but I guess they've now consolidated. I used a Gilt voucher for a haircut and blowout and was treated like someone using a coupon by the front desk. For anyone that's used a voucher, you know that some places treat everyone the same and some places act annoyed that you're not paying full price. I got there on time and had to wait for about 15 minutes before my stylist was done with his last client. He didn't apologize for the wait. It's always a little awkward at first with a new stylist but we found a common ground by talking about cosmetics. The haircut was fine. I didn't feel that usually gorgeous, bouncy hair vibe you usually do when you leave the salon but it was fine. They are exclusively Keune focused which isn't my favorite. I'm not sure if I was given bare bones because I had a voucher but it didn't entice me to rush back. read more

The salon is clean and inviting. Jenna did a really good job on coloring and the haircut. Worth a try. When I first walked in, I immediately loved how inviting the space is, and thinking that I may come back if the hairstylist worked out....but a couple things that made me decided not to: I came in with a gilt city voucher on "haircut with balayage, ombre or partial highlight". Nowhere on the voucher mentioned that balayage and ombre are partial only. I thought the ads was misleading because I was hoping to do a full balayage, but I ended up doing a partial highlight and paid extra for a toner. But during the haircut, I really like how Jenna did the color and the styling, so I thought to myself again, maybe I would still come back if the hairstylist worked out....but.... They scheduled a quick trim/haircut appointment in the middle of my visit with Jenna. Even though it took about 20-30min for color processing, the hairstylist would be otherwise idle. I found this practice extremely rude. Not sure if this would happen to a fully paid client or because I was on gilt city voucher. But isn't voucher a way to promote the business in the hope that the client would become regular? read more

Rafael Pedrosa at Genacelli East Studio is AMAZING! I have been to several stylists in the Chicago area, and he is by far the best and his services are at a reasonable cost. He listens to what you want, makes suggestions based on your color/skin tone, his color service was AMAZING and his cut was perfect. He is all around the BEST ever. I went to him looking for a darker hair color and he went past the "color chart" and mixed the PERFECT color. His cut was perfect and he made the entire experience enjoyable. I can not recommend him more highly. I went back to get my second service a few months later, and I was even more pleased with his service. The products and technique he uses leaves my hair with an unbelievable shine and the color looks amazing. Healthy hair, and it was faster than most stylist I have been to. I bought a voucher on Gilt for a haircut and balayage. The salon is big, clean and open which I really liked. I've had balayage highlights done twice before at different salons and this was the best experience I've had yet. Jenna completely nailed what I was asking for and the color turned out perfect. I would definitely go back to her. She checked up on my highlights as it was processing which comforted me because the last time my hair was over processed. It was an extra $20 for toner which I knew going into it and was so worth it for me because my coloring is exactly what I wanted. I've been growing my hair for about 18 months with the intention of donating it. I'm not a long hair person. I like how it looks but it's just too much to maintain. I'm also very lazy about doing my hair. I'll blow it dry as long as it's not too hot out but that's about it. Lately I'd just been walking around with my hair looking a mess because it was too hot to blow it dry and it looks horrible when I let it air dry. So I was throwing it up in ponytails and all sorts of other bad looks. I figured even though it would be pretty short if chopped of 8 inches but it would be better than what I was doing with it now. So I made an appointment with Robin to cut off all of my hair. I was nervous, excited, and kind of a bundle of nerves when I got to the salon. The staff was so sweet though. They were all excited that I was donating my hair and Robin assured me that she wouldn't cut it unless she felt I was ready and that she could give me a style that suited me with the remaining hair. She sat me down, gave me a glass a wine and started measuring my hair. She pinned it back so I could get an idea of what it would look like minus 8 inches. I told her to go for it. We took some "before" pictures and then she put my hair into 4 separate ponytails so the cuts would be more even. Four cuts later my hair was 8 inches shorter and I had 4 mini ponytails to donate. They put them aside for me and Robin took me to have my hair washed and the cut finished. About 30 min later I couldn't have been happier. My hair looked GREAT. I went from long hair that just hung there to a great bob that looked great (if I do say so myself). I couldn't believe what a transformation it was. The entire salon was great too. They congratulated me on what I had done and I even got a few hugs. Cynthia was even sweet enough to clean up my brows for me even though I didn't have an appointment. Bottom line, I adore this place. They're amazing people who want you to look and feel good inside and out. I really did not want to have to write this review but Genacelli left me no choice. After a color that I was unsatisfied with, I went back for an adjustment and was absolutely mortified by what was done to my hair (picture attached). I did not feel comfortable going back there for a third time so I went elsewhere to get it fixed which cost me a lot of money and time. I emailed Genacelli asking for a refund and was told by the owner and colorist that they do not do refunds. I am truly disappointed with my experience and would not have written this review if they just refunded me for the terrible service I received. It was a little over 2 years ago, but I had the worst hair experience ever here. Based on more current reviews, it looks like my same stylist is still there. Amazing. Upon recommendation from a friend, I decided to splurge on my first high-end salon here in Chicago. I left with a super-cuts quality hair cut, a scalp burn across my forehead surrounding my brassy overprocessed hair (have the family photo to prove it- taken the next day!) and would never go back. I wrote, complained to the owner, they offered me free services, but I really just couldn't bring myself to stepping foot in there again. About $300 for a nightmare of a hair appointment. **It should be noted that I got stuck in traffic and arrived late. I asked the stylist, if she could still squeeze me in or if I should reschedule. She said they'd work it out. Working it out meant having the young girl who was sweeping the floor take over my color job. I sat at the sink and watched her chat with her friend while my scalp burned and my "subtle" highlights turned a brassy orange and platinum. read more

I was referred here by a friend and changed my mind from single process and cut to full highlights and cut in order to go blonder and prevent constant upkeep from outgrowth. While I'm happy with the color outcome, it's definitely not very much lighter, certainly not enough to rationalize the cost of full highlights. The stylist was great though, and offered that I could come in later this week and she would lighten it. What I was most disappointed with was the experience I had with the cashier/receptionist. The referral card I had was for 25% off a cut or color. I felt comfortable going with full highlights because I knew I'd get the discounted offer. However, she took 25% off the CUT, saying it was off the lowest priced item!!! The voucher did NOT say that anywhere, and on their web site they offer a $20 discount for any referral. I was not given an itemized bill, but according to their site the hair cut is $25. So, after the discount my bill was an astounding $200 (after the $5 I saved with the voucher!). And my hair was not even much lighter. For this reason alone, I will not be back. read more

Pleasant staff. Jenna gave me a sleek blowout with volume and hydration. I explained how I like my natural texture in a blow out (not ultra sleek) and she delivered. It was a relaxing experience, and the staff was well organized and efficient with time, making the entire process quick. Decent spot for blow outs. Kerastase and shu Umuera products used. UPDATE: IF you buy the vouchers for 3 blow outs, they don't have stylists on Sundays and a weekday (forgot which day). They also only have one stylist for the voucher deal, making it EXTREMELY difficult to get an opening. Why isn't this specified on the voucher that there is only ONE stylist to accommodate all voucher purchasers?! The receptionist was useless in helping me figure out dates and times available with the single stylist allocated to deal purchasers. I had to ask 15 questions to get her to say, "the second girl no longer is a stylist for vouchers... only one girl left." Would've been great to know far in advance... would've spared me the purchase here! Plenty of other blow out deals elsewhere... spare yourselves! read more

I was desperate to try out a new salon after having my hair damaged at another. The cut I had there was just ok. Nothing great and if anything, not really that cute. I went to another stylist recently (I'm desperate to find a good one) and she said that my hair was three inches longer in the back than the front. I don't know about you, but that seems a little odd. My last color highlight was awful and I had to come back in for a redo. She said it was because of the direction of the foils, etc but I seriously can't imagine my whole head would look awful (with still visible roots) simply because of direction. And fyi, they are told to only put 35 foils in for a partial, instead of just eyeing a partial color amount. I think the only reason I am giving them three stars is because they sell Kerastase products. That line is truly amazing because it restored my hair to it's healthy condition. After months of growing my hair out and nurturing it to health (I was a former highlight junkie), I decided to add some subtle balayage color and trim the ends. We discussed my specific color/cut thoughts and I relaxed and enjoyed my coffee with a few magazines while she got started. After spending some time painting the color on the stylist looked at some of the first highlights and let out a gasp. Without telling me anything she called over other stylists who all told her to wash the color off immediately. She questioned whether my hair had been chemically processed recently, which it had not, and then thought for a couple minutes before rinsing me out. While I'm not sure what exactly happened, at some point during the processing my hair began to fry, literally. I debated whether to post anything or not but after 2 conditioning treatments at other spas and having to cut my long hair to my shoulders to hide the 3 inch damaged pieces on the top of my head, I cannot keep quiet any more. My hair looks horrible and will take months for me to grow back. I could not have had a worse experience. read more

I have never been one of those people who is loyal to one stylist or even one salon. I usually decide a day or two before I want to get my hair cut and call down the list and make an appointment with whomever can accommodate me first. Genacelli has changed my ways... I have gotten my hair cut there three times now (which for me is a lot). I have been very pleased each time and plan on going back for many cuts to come. I have recommended it to friends who have also been very happy there. Between my friends and I we have seen 3-4 different stylists and we have each found that all the stylists are very attentive and really listen to you and what you had in mind. It genuinely seems as though they are invested in you and your hair cut and want to make it the very best it can be... it isn't just another appointment to rush through. They ask you throughout, is this the length you were thinking? etc. so that you always leave very happy. Try it. I am over the moon with my cut & balayage appointment with Jenna. She was so attentive to exactly what I wanted. My hair was actually botched 9 months ago by a different big salon. I explained my situation to her. I really only wanted 1/2 an inch cut & balayage highlights. Jenna did exactly that & thinned out my old unwanted bob at the back. She made my ends a bit cooler by making them not super straight. The cut & balayage are perfect. Jenna made conversation, but wasn't overly chatty. I'm so glad I found this salon on Gilt City. That being said, I really try to be consistent with who I got to for color, but it's hard not to try someone new sometimes. I went back to Kristen to get my hair colored/trimmed. After she cut my hair twice, I really liked what she did, so I decided to put my trust in her for color! She tried something on me that I had never done before. Bayalyge? It's a form of painting on the color in strips to show a more natural growth pattern. There are some foils involved, still. The coloring took awhile while sitting, but I had a magazine and my phone--so I survived :) I'm really pleased with the way it has grown out and with the immediate color I saw that was classy and natural. My only gripe was that it was twice what I usually pay for a partial highlight. But, that's my fault, and I should have asked the cost. My hair always looks and feels great - and he delivers what I ask for - I never look too "done," just like a better version of me. However, it gets to a point when it's mandatory. Trust me, I would fall asleep at night feeling like my hair would wrap around my neck and choke me. Kidding? You'll never know... So, I "yelped" around and found this place. It's open in Sundays! Sah-weet. I made an appointment to see Beth, and she was fantastic! She's laid back, talented, and super in-tune to what the customer wants. Plus, it's not too expensive. I dread going to high-end hair salons. I'm low-maintenance when it comes to hair and my salon visits always include some snobby person saying, "Well you really SHOULD be using this product; have you ever thought about highlights?; WHAT?! You don't deep condition once a month?!" Nope, sorry, got better things to do, but thanks for making me feel like an incompetent cave woman. Okay, Genacelli is NOT THAT PLACE. On your first visit, you fill out a "hair profile" which is the best idea I've ever seen. They ask you about styling, product, color, etc, and then make sure they give you a haircut that will match your lifestyle (you know, one that will look awesome every single day rather than only the day you walk out of the salon). I told Beth that I dried my hair with a blow dryer and my fingers and so that's how she styled it, so that I could be sure it would look good when I did it at home. If they do suggest a product or treatment, it's one that will actually fit with YOUR hair and YOUR lifestyle and if you don't want to spend a million dollars on your hair, you can just say, "No thanks" without feeling like a total geek. And they still do just as great a job as the snobby stylists. read more

Well I think i finally found a salon! After living here for 5 years, I think I am owed this. And the funny thing is, I used to walk by thinking it would be way overpriced and too high-end. I was very wrong! A friend who recently moved back to Lakeview recommended Genecelli, so I gave it a try. She told me to go to Crystal, so I did. She was great, we went through my "hair history" she gave me some pointers and made some suggestions and I immediately felt comfortable. I left the dye and the scissors to her. And my hair never looked better. The overall service was welcoming, the salon was very clean and I really enjoyed their music selection! Oh yeah, free wine and beer after 5. Can't get much better than that. The price was very reasonable; cut, color and a treatment for 128. I would recommend Crystal and Genecelli to anyone looking for a salon. read more

I'm in LOVE with this place. I've been twice, and each time has been an awesome experience. I will never go to another salon in Chicago. The first time I went, I booked my appointment because I had absolutely botched my hair trying to dye it myself. There were able to get me an appointment the very next day. Upon entering, I was impressed by the clean, classic look of the place. It is very open, with all white furniture and dark hardwood floors. The receptionist checked me in, took my coat, and offered me a drink which I wait for my stylist. I have never had treatment like that at any other salon! When I was finally with my stylist, Erica, she took a lot of time getting to know exactly what I wanted and didn't want. She suggested a couple different things and was extremely knowledgeable about all of my options. I ended up getting my hair lifted and toned, and the process was extremely relaxing, and I was thrilled with the results. My hair was the exact shade I wanted, and the blowout they did was great. The second time I went in, I booked with Erica again, and this time got partial highlights and a cut. Again, I was very pleased with the results and couldn't have asked for better treatment! I have been going to Genacelli for 6-7 years, so this review is long overdue. Though I've been to many stylists, I've most recently been seeing Erica at the East Studio. It's so nice to find a stylist who delivers a wonderful cut every time, and knows exactly what you're asking for, despite your less than stellar description. A couple months ago I accidentally burned a good portion of my hair off due to a faulty hair dryer and melting brush (long story). I went straight to Erica and she saved my poor damaged hair with no problem. You could barely tell what had happened. And, she's super friendly and always makes you feel welcome. Came in, based on the reviews. Wanted to do a whole new color and highlights. I did get that but it wasn't what I wanted. I did show a picture for inspiration. I appreciated the stylists input and it sounded nice so.. I just went ahead and took his advice ( then included cutting my ends off, which they needed to be chopped but I got charged for the price of a whole regular cut) For 300 + I expected a more drastic change. I received something I feel my recently graduated hair school friend would have done (which isn't bad at all!!) Total was 400+ because I did fall in love with the way my hair felt/ looked with the shampoo and conditioner so I bought them both. overall I feel that the salon doesn't specialize in extra creative looks. And might cater a lot more to an older age group. I would suggest/ recommend this place for the simple things such as a cut/ style. *I LOVE MY HAIR ( I've already received so many compliments) but expected so much more. I don't remember how I discovered Genacelli, but I love it. I found it when I transferred to DePaul and finally realized that I needed a "real" haircut - this was back in winter 2002!!! This was a total makeover experience for me. Cynthia took care of my monstrous eyebrows and tamed them down quite a bit. They looked nice and still masculine. The next part of the "makeover" was my haircut. Being from rural Illinois I had no idea what all this texturizing meant...what I needed for coarse hair...blah blah. Best haircut of my life. I felt like a new person! It's 2010 and this review is long overdue as I faithfully went to Genacelli while I lived in Chicago. I no longer live in Chicago as I moved in 2006 BUT whenever I'm in town I stop in to see LAURA and sometimes I can catch CYNTHIA too! This is a great place that holds a special place in my heart. My poor college a*s would save and save to come here. So worth it! Now it's much easier to afford and let's face it...it's a great space. After three months of denial, I finally got my $5 haircut fixed. I've never gotten bangs cut on me successfully. Yet I insist on getting them every time. I figured this would be my last attempt to make this work for me. I showed Peter a picture of what I wanted and he recreated that look for me. I have bangs and I love them. And the rest of my hair looks fabulous, too! He is awesome! Unlike other salons I've been to, he did not berate me for using cheap shampoo or for having an even cheaper haircut. He showed me how to style my hair but didn't push the uber expensive Kerastase products that he used (which I bought anyways, ha! Or was he using reverse psychology? D'oh!). I asked the receptionist if they had any kind of discount for new clients, and she gave me a $25 off coupon right away. I started going to this salon last year and really liked it immediately. When I called to make an appointment this week, my regular stylist had up and moved on me so I decided to give someone new a chance. CRYSTAL G.. did an awesome job on the color (highlights and lowlights), and then she even gave me a super layered cut I am thrilled about. I am so glad I decided to give Crystal a chance at the cut. Crystal was easygoing, focused, and gave a great scalp massage. Additionally, for those of you who don't enjoy feeling like you have to make small talk, Crystal is perfectly content to chat a little bit or just let you chill. I came here initially as a recommendation from a friend who has similarly thick, wavy hair that's hard to cut and style. Kristen is great! She listens well and provides options for cut and color. I would totally be friends with her IRL, too. She's got a friendly, talkative personality. She even attends and works fashion week. They serve wine here so that's a definitely plus. They also use luxury brand hair care so you're getting a step above the usual Redken which is nice. Kristen can do balayage highlights - they're pricier but I love the result. Very natural looking. Once I had my appointment down wrong - I thought I was supposed to be in at 1:00 but it was really for 12:15. Not cool of me to mess up the times but they accommodated me very well and they still took me a bit later (1:45) for my color. I had to reschedule a cut but that was ok. I was glad they actually could squeeze me in with Kristen! I felt terrible. Anyway I would recommend this place to a friend. The front desk had no idea what happened and the stylist said they would not be able to complete my service anytime in the near future. I really would have appreciated a sorry or something. My tresses have not been this bouncy and beautiful since 1998 ! Erica is amazing with cut, and color. So is KJ. Pick your poison. I find this salon to be very affordable, very up to the minute with style, very good with difficult hair like my fine and wispy, swept to the side strands, and they sell KERASTASE / SHU UMERA shampoo (a.k.a. Heroine for your Hair), and awesome online appointment booking. The salon is all light and bright and airy, and men in this neighborhood like to spend $50 on their haircuts when they could go to a barber for $10. Robin is great. We talked for ten minutes before she even made a move for the scissors. As it was my first time at Genacelli, I also had to fill out a survey that explained what I did to my hair. It was nice to know that they really are getting to know your hair (and you) before they just chop away. I wanted to take two inches off and she wouldn't let me because then my pony tail (an everyday hairstyle for a teacher) would look less than superb. I always enjoy a stylist who prevents you from making a mistake. She explained to me what she was doing and how it would all work in the end. No one tried to sell me anything, and Robin even confirmed that what I was currently doing was on track. I was offered water, coffee or tea upon arrival. I've been going to Genacelli for the past 3 1/2 years and I love it! Kristen is the best! I always look forward to getting my hair done because I know I will like how I look when I walk out the door.
