New to Chicago. Needed a new salon. Relied on Yelp reviewers. Could not have been happier with the outcome. I made my appointment with Kristen at The East Studio and she was wonderful. I have had pretty much the same hair cut/color/style for years. I was ready for some change. Kristen listened to what I wanted and what I was open to. I'm never sure if not having a vision is helpful for a hair stylist or if it makes me a pain but Kristen was great. I'm an art teacher so luckily I have some leeway as far as style goes, so when I said I wasn't afraid of color Kristen eased me into the idea of purple and lavender balayage highlights on the ends of my very blonde hair. LOVE the outcome. She wasn't afraid to suggest it and now I'm very thankful for her suggestion. She also suggested straight across bangs, which I have not had those since I was 5 years old. I trusted her opinion that they would fit my face, and voila, I LOVE them. I have my next appointment made and I'm sure I'll be following up with many more in the future. DO NOT COME HERE! And if you do, extensive research is required to determine who is competent in hair. Not worth the $$!!! I have had ONE positive experience here and TWO awful ones. My first was a Keratin with Josh who was meticulous, diligent and left my hair feeling smooth and straight (as it should be when you pay $275 to get it professionally straightened!). If I stopped here, I would give it 4 stars. HOWEVER, The second time I came in for a cut and color and after all was said and done, I was told by the stylist my color had came out warmer than anticipated and it wasn't the color the stylist had intended ..thanks? Not to mention he chopped more inches than I was comfortable with since "I needed it and he's not a pushover like most stylists." 3.5 hours later, I left with too short and too blonde of hair. My most recent visit I was excited to use a Gilt voucher for a reduced price keratin treatment. Unfortunately I had to use it with a stylist I've never been to before because the voucher was only for new stylists "to help build their clientele." This must be code for "stylists who can't get clients at our typical rates because they do a poor job" because I left with my hair half curly/half straight. WASTE of 2.5 hours! Cynthia, the manager, offered to accommodate me but only with the same stylist who was incapable of doing it the right way the first time. Cynthia was also pretty insufferable to deal with- no apology and no acknowledgement of wrongdoings on their end. No wonder there are so many negative reviews on here. Overall, this salon is absolutely overpriced and hit or miss in terms of stylists. I stumbled upon this salon because it was close to my work. Beth S quickly became the only person I wanted doing my hair. The prices are fair and you never feel rushed out the door. I am not the type of client that ever knows what I want and I totally trust that I can walk in, tell Beth to do what she think would work best with my hair type and ability to style it on my own at home and I always leave happy. When I got married in '09 I knew that I only wanted Beth to style my hair. The only problem was that I was getting married in my hometown outside of Detroit. I went to Amanda for highlights and a cut after purchasing a deal on Bloomspot. I noticed the good reviews so it seemed like a safe bet. Genacelli is a really nice salon. The receptionist was friendly, offered me something to drink (free wine, okay!) and Amanda got to me very quickly. She was awesome and I could tell that she understood exactly what I wanted. She did my partial highlight quickly and efficiently. While I waited for the color to set, she did someone else's color. The shampoo guy was great, too but I was forced to wait while she finished with the other person. This was my only complaint and the reason for my 4-star review. I wish I had something negative to say because this sounds like an ad, but it isn't. I have only great things to say about Genacelli, and have fun being a patron. The staff is totally nice, artsy, considerate, and accommodating. Their costs are reasonable for the quality of service they provide, and I happen to look awesome (very modest of me I know). Joseph...the owner is a gentleman and he takes an interest in the work of all of his stylists. Darren Garrison cut my hair and dyed it both times...his attention to detail, his authenticity, and his kindness resulted in a complete feeling of satisfaction. He is a true artist. I highly highly recommend Genacelli for men and women. They also have a broad selection of hair care products which are priced very reasonably. Whatever you do, PLEASE DO NOT STEP FOOT IN THIS SALON PLEASE! Erika their so called stylist, should be a hair washer rather than a stylist. Not only is she rude but she has zero interest to know what the client wants. Ladies this salon is overpriced, staff will go out of their way to fix their errors but instead they will chop your hair off. They destroyed my hair, my moms and my girlfriends. They were rushing, and paid zero attention to what we asked for. They are the type that will do whatever THEY want not what YOU want because they rush. My hair is damaged from a so called "balayage" that really are nothing but overly done highlights, that have changed colors in less than a week. This salon was amazing. I had purchased a gilt deal for haircut and blow dry. I arrived ten minutes early and didn't have to wait. Jenna cut my hair and did an amazing job! Robin is the greatest, I've been seeing her for 2+ years since I finished undergrad. She's thoughtful, attentive, has great ideas, and feedback. I love that I can ask her any question about my hair. She really knows what style will work, what's the best color, and applies her knowledge to my specifics. I always get honest responses as to what she thinks of my maintenance products as well as what she thinks would be good for me to try. This is NOT a hard pressed sale, it's an expert's opinion, and hers is highly valuable! She never presses color or style that I'm not into. I always have a great, relaxing time while I'm there. Love the decor, beverages of choice (white wine, thank you), friendly, friendly service, flexibility and top of the line products. I just recently moved to the city, leaving behind a fantastic hairdresser that I loved. I tried a salon recommended by my mother, but the different chemicals made my hair orange-y instead of my cherry-coke red color. By the time mid-March rolled around, I had what I lovingly referred to as Neapolitan hair: cherry, orange, and vanilla where my blonde roots had grown out Finally, I went on the Redken website and stumbled onto Genacelli's. What a stroke of luck. I went on their website, and I was able to book an appointment online with KJ. I'm never around or thinking about appointments when salons are open, so that was a major plus for me. Iwas able to book the appointment for the next day, and that was awesome. I got to the salon. Everyone was super nice, I was offered a drink, they took my coat. I had brought my color formula from my old hairdresser, which they stapled to the info sheet they had me fill out about my habits with my hair. One of the questions was about how skilled I felt I was doing stuff with my hair. I thought that was a great idea! I hate it when hairdressers put a bunch of stuff in my hair and then style it 100 different ways to make it look great. I don't even own hairspray, okay? KJ was awesome. She was personable and made conversation. She brought in the Redken specialist to consult on my hair. The color is perfect! She also had some great ideas about taking some of the bulk out of my hair without losing the length. As a result, my hair is the same length but it feels like I cut 6" off, and it's no longer too heavy for a ponytail. Best of all, I paid about $100. I got a fantastic cut, great color, some good advice, and KJ has gotten one thrilled new client. read more

The East Studio: Laura is a hair magician! I was recommended to her by a friend when I moved to Chicago. I was worried about finding a new hair stylist, but my hair has never looked better since I started going to her - I wouldn't dream of cheating on her with a different stylist or a box! She has helped me develop a nice at-home hair care routine, but she certainly does not push products or unnecessary treatments. All the assistants and other staff are also great. A few other perks: you can make your appointment online, easy street parking (if you're lucky, you might score a free spot across the street), they use the Belly points system, and they serve complimentary wine after 5! Genacelli: Just had a fabulous facial done by Cynthia! It was relaxing and I felt like she was really attentive to the skin care needs I had expressed upon starting the facial. I have been a regular customer of only two salons over the past 25 years, both on the Near North side of Chicago. My current regular hair and facial salon is Treo on Wabash - a great salon. Due to a job layoff, I decided to try and cut costs while not working and tried a neighborhood salon in Lincoln Park near my home, genacelli salon. At first I was impressed with their little marketing brochure, not necessarily professional looking, but well written, with a description of each of the stylists, their personalities, etc. I thought it was a good marketing piece (I'm in sales and marketing). I decided to make an appointment. Unfortunately, due to an unexpected time change for a job interview - made by the person with whom I was interviewing, I had to reschedule my appointment, but gave the salon 1 day notice. The following week, I then had the appointment with Laura who was very nice, capable and it was a pleasant experience. The second time I tried to get my hair done at this same salon, the same thing happened, I had to cancel due to a job interview - this time I had to cancel the same day. I think it's very rude to cancel any appointment without 24-hour's notice, however, since I put a much higher priority on a job interview than getting my hair done, I gave the salon as much notice as I could (6 hours), I paid them the cancellation fee - apologized and thought the matter would be over. This is where the EXTREMELY NEGATIVE REVIEW comes in. I made another appointment with the salon manager and walked into the salon approximately 5 or 6 minutes late and started checking in. Ms. Salon Owner, (MSO) who just happened to be getting her hair done that day, got out of her seat, came over to the reception desk where what seemed like a large group of people were gathered and approached me. At what appeared to me to be a raised, nasty tone of voice, MSO said, "you can't have your hair done here, we don't want your business." Shocked and embarrassed, I looked at the person who made the reservation and asked why she hadn't told me on the phone and had let me spend the taxi fare for a ride over (it's about 10 blocks and was running a little late). All I received were blank stares from the people around the receptionist desk. I later called MSO to tell her how unprofessional her behavior was. So, if you ever have a last minute emergency come up - like a job interview in the worst recession in 80 years and you are in-between jobs, DO NOT GO TO GENACELLI SALON!!!! VERY RUDE, INAPPROPRIATE, AND UNPROFESSIONAL BEHAVIOR MOSTLY FROM THE OWNERSHIP (only 1 woman who I don't know her name - like 55ish, short hair?. Luckily there is a wonderful salon about 1 block south of genacelli called steven papageorge salon with wonderful staff (Devon is great) and professional ownership. They are located at 2803 N. The girl I went to left and I was told Laura would be good for me-I have (had) super long hair, in great condition too- I went in and wanted 2 inches taken off and longer layers put in around the chest area and possible longer bangs cut-I've had long hair forever and I've also had bad hair cut experiences so I know what will and won't work for me-I brought pictures of my hair twin, Denise Richards-Which I was told by the girl that she has extensions, she really doesn't have long hair...ummmm I'm pretty positive it's her real hair so you can't fool me on that- I asked for my hair to be flat ironed and cut, it's easier that way-I got attitude right away-I was so close to just walking out b/c she A) did not like long hair B) was mad that I wanted my hair cut dry and C) I don't think liked me- Let's just say I went in wanting 2 inches cut off and I left with at least 6 taken off-As well there are odd cut pieces that just stand out, like my hair got caught on something and had to be cut- Yes it was super long but I am the client and I know what I wanted-From now on either I'll cut my hair or find a person who doesn't have a problem with long hair- Thank goodness my hair grows fast but it was NOT what I wanted at all- read more

Hands down WORST SALON experience of my life! I called the salon to get a all over color and on the phone they told me a single process color would cost $85 just like the website did. They also wanted to make sure I had more than 1 hour with the stylist because they wanted to fit in a blow dray. Once the color was complete I was not very happy with it, but did not feel like staying longer and getting it redone. Little did I know, I was charged literally for sitting in the salon. My total bill came out to $190.... for a single process color! What I found out was the colorist decided to use 2 different colors for a single process color appointment and because of that he was allowed to charge me $200. I complained, talked to the manager, and went back in forth through emails for weeks and all they said was, "You should have asked during your appointment if you were getting charged for everything happening." This salon not only has poor customer service, but they aren't even willing to try to help the situation and make you feel better by resolving it. It is likely they will try to take advantage of you. So many better salons in the city at much better prices with significantly more talent. Do not wast your time or money because it will end up ugly. read more

She's such a cool chick and she does amazing work with color and has given me the best hair cuts I've ever had. *Ask for Robin! Highly Recommend! * After my stylist left a few years back, the universe was good to me when I walked into Genacelli Salon and met Robin Mroz Hain. She is more than a talented stylist with years of experience. She is a beautiful person who genuinely cares about her clients. This past month I was toying with the idea of getting "statement bangs" that would completely change my look. I did my research and even popped in the salon to get her opinion ( would it be the worst mistake?, could I pull them off?, will I be able to style them myself?...). We went through pictures, she brought me the fake clip-on bangs, the celebrities wear, to play with at home and we did a thorough consult on a separate day (she even took my picture and uploaded it on her tablet hair app to show me what I would look like if she cut them). What I'm trying to say is, she allowed me to go through my crazy process of thinking about it, she put zero pressure on me and told me she was 100% sure that with my type of hair & shape of my face it was a good move and wouldn't do it if she didn't think so... and she was right! I LOVE THEM! Also, after the initial transformation she told me she expected to see me within a week after I got adjusted to them, to do any "tweaking" that I might like (no charge, her focus was on me loving my new look). I have since had a bang trim and can say she has perfected the look I wanted all along. I'm sure you are thinking this is a long review over bangs, but if you are a girl who has ever had bangs (especially bad ones), you know how important the right/experienced/honest stylist is when making such a decision. I highly recommend Robin to anyone who needs a new stylist! Peter ROCKS. I'd walked past Genacelli for a couple of years every day on my way to the gym (ok, ok, every OTHER day!) but never went in except to buy some Kerestasse stuff. My other salon was good, GREAT with extensions, but the haircut was never quite what i wanted after the extensions came out. Plus i was tired of making the long trek to Gold Coast, spending cabfare and etc, and was always putting off going, so my hair looked bad half the time -- I wanted something closer to home where I could make salon visits more frequently without the hassle and keep my locks looking good. I hemmed and hawed over the decision for WEEKS and finally took the plunge. SO GLAD I DID. the recptionist who took my appointment talked with me about my style and expectations (I had just come from the gym, so it was hard to tell what I prefer style-wise), and she suggested that rather than go for their most senior stylist, I go with Peter, who she said was just as awesome and was very hip and would be able to give me something stylish and young. She also told me where to go online to geta coupon! - SO she saved me some $$ while also making the effort to get me a good fit with my stylist. NICE. the day of my appointment, Peter was great, got me tea, let me chill as I'd been running aorund all day and was frazzled, talked to me and looked closely at the photos I'd brought, and was very upfront about what i could expect, and what my hair simply would NOT do. However, he reassured me that he understood what i wanted and that i would not be unhappy. he did an AMAZING job! Good color and I haven't had as great a cut since I left LA. He razor-cut it in places to give my fine hair some serious body, and tweaked and tweaked it until it was perfect! I'm a huge products-and-tools girl, and this is the first time in years I've been able to just give it a quick blow dry and leave the house if I need to - it (sometimes) even looks cute first thing in the morning! Amazing! Plus, Peter was friendly without being too familiar, casual without being lazy or seeming disinterested, and warm without being phony. He was totally pro while making me feel totally at ease. he also showed me how to make the products i already have work better, and advised some i should try when the old ones run out - he didn't force any stuff on me. He also gave me some blowdry and flatiron tips (I went right out and bought the exact flatiron he has - it was so much gentler than mine!), and just really seemed to care about my hair and went out of his way to help me keep it looking good. SO -- Great cut and color, close to home, clean and stylish salon, great service and customer care, and the iciing on the cake?.. It was WAY cheaper than my old salon. WIN. I had such a great experience here. I usually would not have made the trek up to Lincoln Park, but I bought a Gilt City voucher for a cut and balayage since I was thinking of making a drastic change to my hair. I basically told Jenna to lop off 6 inches and take my virgin black hair as light as possible. She was really understanding of what I wanted from the get-go, continuously asked for my input (how I usually style in the mornings, what I thought about the length, etc.) throughout the appointment, and explained what products and techniques she was using every step of the way. I ended up paying extra for the toner and also bought a product (which I didn't feel pressured to buy at all), which was well worth it. After 5 pm they also offer complimentary wine! Beautiful salon and Laura was a m a z i n g. I don't live in town and needed to get my hair cut and colored. On the referral of a friend, I went to Laura and it was by far the best hair experience I have had in a long time, if not ever. First, she did an amazing job. She listened to me to to the point of true understanding and assessed what would make the most sense. She took her time and explained her thoughts on my hair and we decided together what she would do. As I'm typing this, it sounds completely ridiculous, but anyone who has been to a nightmare stylist or even a sub-par stylist knows how important this is. My color is beautiful, my cut suits my hair and my lifestyle perfectly, and I had a wonderful couple of hours chatting (I'm not the chatty type) to a lovely lady about all kinds of things. I went out on a limb after a bad yelp recommendation for a hairstylist earlier this year. I couldn't have been happier with this experience--First of all, happy it was open on a Sunday! My weeks and weekends are often so busy, I can usually only make time for myself on Sunday. It was a nice treat. Great location, close to the L in a quiet Lakeview neighborhood. Studio salon is on the smaller side (extension of Genacelli)...not sure why they're 'separate', but it has a relaxing, industrial feel to it. I really like that they take the time to find out about your routine, products, how often you wash, blow dry/curl/straighten etc. The questionnaire for new clients is a little bit excessive--it makes the appointment a little too clinical, but I guess a good reference for the stylists. I got my hair cut for the first time in 5 months, and colored for the first time in 5 years--needless to say I was nervous about coloring my hair after so long, and I didn't want to steer too far from my natural color. I was pleasantly surprised that KJ noticed natural highlights in my hair from the sun (I sure as hell didn't see them), and she matched the color perfectly with those tones. The color turned out great! It really makes my eyes pop, and didn't stray too far from my natural color. Cut also turned out great! She took a lot of the bulk out of my hair without sacrificing much length. Overall VERY pleased with the results. And pretty reasonably priced for full highlights and a cut! KJ is also very friendly and easy to talk to without being too pushy--she clearly takes the time to listen and gives great results. I will definitely be back for touch ups and another cut! Finally. After having chased down hair dressers who were at least able to offer "decent" haircuts, I have finally found my salon home. A real salon, with a real hair dresser, at a location that is walking distance from my house. Freakin' sweet. KJ was my introduction to The East Studio, which is attached to Genacelli. She asked me lots of questions about my hair, what I wanted, haircuts I had been happy with in the past, etc. She even welcomed the picture I brought in without issue. It was one of the best waxing experiences I have ever had, hands down. I have EXTREMELY sensitive skin, and previous experiences at other salons left me with a red, even bleeding chin. Not here - she removed every hair quickly, skillfully, and with minimal pain. My chin was only the slightest bit pink, which cleared up within a few hours. I've been going to Kristen for about a year, primarily for hair cuts and highlights. She is great, listens seriously to what you want, and I always have a good experience. She seems very passionate about her work and is always learning the most up to date styles and techniques. Her prices seem reasonable, and personally, she is laid back, friendly, and easy going. LOVE this salon! I had Britni, the East Studio's 'color expert'. I got a cut and deep purple ombre/bayalage treatment done. Britni was professional, knowledgeable, and really great at basically reading my mind on what I wanted. This was the first dyeing my hair EVER, and she was exactly what I was looking for. The price point was a little steeper than I normally would go, but it was honestly worth every penny. I will definitely be back! read more
