Gencarelli's is one of those places where you walk in and you go "whoa!" Being on the side of a major highway you would never expect to find such a nice little Italian restaurant. The front is deceiving - once you walk in you'll see the dining room is nicely remodeled. After you sit they bring out the most amazingly soft and buttery bread, so good you'll eat at least two baskets. I've had a few different things on the menu and have enjoyed every single one. Most recently I had chicken breast with portobello mushroom and roasted red pepper in a balsamic sauce with a side of spaghetti. It was so good, the flavors mesh together so well. My husband had a chicken cutlet in a gravy with prosciutto and mushrooms topped with melted cheese. His was also super tasty, so much so that I helped him out by eating all of his mushrooms . One of the few places that you can get a solid Sicilian pie and the white pie (usually add garlic and tomato) is hands down best I've ever had....I love their red sauce and always get extra on pizza... it's good on pasta/chicken parm as well....entrees come with triangle bread...yum!!! Less than one star! Not impressed. My company ordered from here a bunch of times, they have many specials to choose from but there were none that were good. My company has since stopped ordering from here. Their Chicken Francese was horrible. I make Chicken Francese the right way, theirs is Chicken with lemon. Gross. Recently, from home I ordered an advertised special, Pizza, Chicken Wings and a liter of soda for all together 22.32. With delivery tip, it came to 26.50. Bargain right? WRONG! OMG. The Chicken Wings were boneless Chicken BALLS, so old and chewy they were disgusting. I threw them away. And, I ordered Buffalo and got barbecued. Pizza was below average for the area. We, too, have ordered (delivery) from here for years and have gotten our share of messed up orders. All could be overlooked because the pizza was pretty good. Then, one day we had our regular pizza order and we both got dreadfully ill...I mean the kind of ill where you make bargains with God...for three days. Just ordered a pizza with sausage...kinda hard to screw up right? WRONG! Two issues with this pizza right off the bat. Number one, where is the sausage? You charge $2.50 for toppings and there is practically nothing on there! One slice has literally one small piece of sausage! Number two, the pizza is practically raw! The crust isn't even cooked through, we just put it our oven to cook it so that it was edible! There is entirely too much liquid on top of the pizza too, the sauce must be watered down. We usually order sandwiches or salads from here during work. Food is always good. A few weeks back i went and ate in w/ co-worker, we had pizza and it was pretty good. (and i'm a NY'er), the reason for the 2 stars, like the other reviews said is cleanliness, i went and ate in a 2nd time w/ my 8yr old daughter and fiancee, there was an odd, unpleasing smell in the rear of the restaurant where we sat. We tried to overlook it and noticed quite a few flies buzzing about. My fiancee took my daughter to the bathroom only to come back and say the bathroom was really nasty. By the end of the meal, my daughter who had gotten mozzarella sticks had to go back to the bathroom & had diarrhea (not sure if one can get sick that fast from the food). The food is good. Here in lies the problem. DO NOT order online and pay with a credit card. I've finally traced back my card info getting stolen at least twice to their site. This last time I emailed them asking if they've been having any complaints about this and explaining what happened and I got "Thank you for emailing there has been something going on with our outside marketing site but he promised us all would be taken care of once again sorry for the inconvenience" response. Really annoying. A different time I tried ordering online and the food never came. I finally called them and they weren't even open. Someone called me 4 hours later to ask if I still wanted the food. Very good pizza... really, the best in our immediate area. They make a really great Sicilian pie, but it's not always available. They also make some good specialty pies like buffalo chicken, chicken parm and cheesesteak. We pretty much only get the pizza here... items like calamari, wings or subs are so-so to o.k., but not great. I see the notes about mixed up orders on the other reviews. Out of probably close to 100 orders over the years, we've only had it happen twice, and they have been very good about making up for the mistake. read more

This review is more about the service than the food. I live in the area and have been ordering from here for awhile. But lately it seems that everyone there has an ego problem. There were times when I have walked in and waited to be asked "How can I help you?" for a looong time. Some of the employees would literally just look at you and say NOTHING! Really?! Just a quick "Hi, I'll be right with you" would suffice! But they just look at you like you don't belong for some odd reason. Young employees don't really care about the business, they are just there to collect a paycheck. It's a shame really. As far as cleanliness, I have really become grossed out at the flies I see around the pizza area on the right when you walk in. I mean, fly glue strips hanging by food??!!??!?! SERIOUSLY???!! Not sure if they are still there since I haven't gone in a long time and never will again. But cleanliness is definitely not a priority at the establishment. I'm not one to bash a business, but sometimes owners need to know what's going on or hear the customers experience first hand. This is the best pizza in the area, without a doubt. I absolutely cannot resist a penne vodka slice even when I go in thinking I'm going to get a salad. When I order takeout I always get shrimp scampi over linguini and it's always consistent. I always ask for extra triangle bread because I just can't get enough of it! This is one of the most abysmal pizza places I've had the misfortune of spending my money on. I ordered a buffalo chicken pizza. Overpriced. Delivery was longer than an hour for a place only a few miles away. Pizza was no longer hot, slightly above luke warm. Pizza was bland, and I want to say they did not put any of the buffalo sauce because I did not taste any. They use a bleu cheese/mayo sauce (vs the regular tomato sauce) and it was honestly quite disgusting. Crust was decent, and amount of cheese was good. My family has been coming here since I was little. The food is consistently good. The service is genuinely friendly and attentive. They have completely updated their dining room. It used to be a pretty nondescript area in the back of a standard pizzeria. Now it is very elegant dining space with a stone facade and new elegant tables. I took off one star because it sometimes feels like they are so busy pushing out food for their take-out service (which to their credit does get very very busy) that the customers in the dining room have extremely long waits for their food. That said, the food is always fresh (again, to their credit they have high volume and quick turn over). To be honest, I have not tried their pizza in about 22 years, because I have recently only gone there for meals. However, I liked the pizza when I was in high school, for whatever that's worth. Maybe I'll try it again soon just so that I can update my review. read more

This is my go to pizza joint for when I'm at work. The pizza never disappoints, and the salads are great too. Salads come with a huge piece of foccacia bread. This is a good spot for a quick lunch, take out or dine-in. The pricing overall are pretty decent. Some items seem oddly priced. 6 small garlic knots should not cost $6.00. The Steak Caesar salad is amazing... I had never had a steak caesar salad before this place and probably wont seek it anywhere else. Too bad thats the only thing good about this place. Having lived only 10 mins away from Gencarelli's all my life, my first visit was tonight and was only because I received a gift certificate to Gencarelli's from a friend. First step was reading the yelp reviews which honestly aren't that great.....second step was arriving at the location and talking myself and my DH into actually stepping inside. But don't let appearances fool you my friends! The exterior of Gencarelli's may be an eyesore but your taste buds will THANK YOU for the experience of eating here! Yes, it's true, the dining area is tiny, but being recently renovated, is quite elegantly decorated and intimate (aside from the endless stream of people coming in and out of the pizzeria side picking up to go orders which is their big money maker). And yes it's also true that we waited 40 mins for our entrees to come out, but when they did, they were proven to be worth the wait! DH and I ordered the Chicken Dominick (sub vodka sauce for the Marsala sauce) to share with penne on the side. The waitress was kind enough to offer to plate and serve it on two separate plates for us but when she served it I figured she got our order wrong and placed two entree orders, not split one order on two plates! DH and I each recieved a plate with two large, succulent pieces of chicken covered in prosciutto and absolutely smothered by fresh buffalo mozzarella all drowned in vodka sauce - we still can't believe that it was only one entree split into two halves! As if the portion size wasn't enough to make the visit worth it, the freshness and quality of the meal was absolutely outstanding! Forgot Olive Garden people! This is real deal, delicious, authentic Italian food! The bread served was hot, crusty but mouth wateringly soft on the inside, the creamy Italian salad dressing was quite clearly homemade and delicious and as I covered the entree was divine. If you can overlook the downright scary exterior, and can pacify yourself for a long wait for entrees with delicious bread then definitely give Gencarelli's a try! P.s. I lived in the area my whole life and had never been to this place. I finally decided to grab a few slices on my way home from working late. It was after 7pm and the place was jam packed. The young girl at the counter was very nice and was describing all the different pies they had made. The phone kept ringing off the hook and the poor girl had to keep grabbing it. I ordered 3 gourmet slices to-go, but can't remember exactly what kind..I think a veggie, meat, and maybe a philly cheese steak. While I was waiting, another kid asked if I was being helped. So, the service was very friendly. Their phone kept ringing and people were coming in and out of the dining room so it looked like they had a good following. Heck, they have been there since I can remember. There was an older couple who walked in with a bottle of wine who wanted to dine-in. They stood there for maybe 10 seconds and then went over to the young counter girl WHILE SHE WAS ON THE PHONE taking an order and asked if they could be seated...the girl had like 2 other lines on hold. I thought it was so rude. These workers probably have to deal with entitled Montville jerks a lot like that so I give them props for keeping a smile on their face. I'll start by saying this place has the best grandma pie and vodka sauce! Very good! Where things fall apart are their take out chicken entree dinners. The last three times I ordered a chicken dish it was pure soup. I could barely find the food floating in all the liquid. I went to eat here tonight since I haven't been there since the renovation was done. They combined their old store with the space next door and made a bigger dining area (14 tables compared to eight before) and a huge brand new kitchen. The food was awesome as always.
