I recently purchased a house which was built in 1953. The home needed some TLC, the wood floors had some water damage, a lot of big gaps between floor boards, and a lot of squeaking when walked on. I thought the floors were a lost cause and were beyond repair. I had got a quote from a big flooring company, to tear out and replace the wood floor, and their quote was concerning. Based on great reviews, we called for a quote. The owner came promptly and gave us a reasonable estimate and put us on their schedule. The communication was good. We were very excited to be updating the stain and finish. Please note that the jobs are contracted out. The owner, who has such great reviews, did not do our work. Workers showed up to do the job and according to our general contractor, they sanded in the wrong direction, leaving waves in our floor's surface. They applied the stain we ordered and came back the next day to apply the "three coats" of Bona finish. We had a family emergency so could not be on site to inspect but the owner came after. Stain had pooled in various places and the clear finish was not done properly. So, he said the workers would come to re-do the entire project. We appreciated that. However, this meant we had to be out of our home an additional week. After the process was repeated, the owner sent someone to collect payment. I am not sure he or anyone did a final inspection and we were still dealing with our emergency. When we got back in our home, I will say the stain looked better. (But the waves in the floor are dismaying.) And the finish itself is thin in places, missing in others, and has small bubbles in other spots. There is no way this is three coats and no way it was applied carefully or even skillfully. My husband had written the check so I guess we have to live with this unfortunate job. One day I'll hire someone else to sand and put a proper clear finish on the floor. For now we spent all our floor money on this. I'd say go with someone else for your job. read more

WE TRULY REGRET HIRING JONNIE/GENERAL HARDWOOD FLOORS!! We are in the process of remodeling our home, we hired Jonnie to refinish our hardwood floors. We asked for a very matte/raw look to the floors- before the final coat he asked us to check and we noticed the floors were very shiny, he said he would make the final coat look as we agreed. When the final finish coat was applied he left out appox 500sqft (we think he ran out of product). When we questioned him he became very defensive, but agreed to finish it- the next week he went back to finish applying the last coat of finish to the 500sqft- he put down the wrong product (Probably left over from the 1st and second coat), leaving some of our floor super shiny the other parts not, several spots looked like puddles of stain. He came back to check it- again was super defensive but acknowledged it looked bad and agreed to fix it. The next week he came back and applied the wrong finish again?! This time he blended a much larger area- 1100sqft making the difference in finishes significant. He tried to blamed us by saying he was having to put too much finish on that's why it looks different, then he blamed his crew, it was after we told him we called the products manufacturer, they suspected based on the photos we sent either the wrong product was used or not mixed properly, he then blamed the product manufacturer/shop that sold the product - saying he was going to sue them for giving him the wrong/expired product?!?!. In the middle of him figuring this situation out with the manufacturer/store, our house was put on hold again (3rd time). At this point Jonnie wanted an advancement on his final payment, So he text us and asked us for more money ($2k+)We agreed to a little more money but not the full ($2k)-he said "no thanks" that wasn't enough money and we were "feeding him like a dog". We were trying to help him out but after so many issues with him we were concerned we may need to hire another flooring company. The following week came back for the 4th time to fix/finish the job, he noticed we had marked some areas of concern with tape(gaps, puddles of finish, etc.), he lost it! He got in my face and started yelling at me in front of my small children, pulled his workers (who were in the middle of sanding) off the job. He left saying he was done with us and if we didn't pay him he was going to put a lien on our house? A few min later his assistant called and apologized for him and says the two workers will come back and finish the job if that is ok. I agreed as long as Jonnie didn't come back in our home, the crew finished. Final result: the floors look OK- but not great. We originally thought the price was good, but after we added up all of the hotel expenses, our remodel being put on hold for weeks and the nightmare of dealing with Jonnie, this was definitely not worth. Johnnie was unprofessional, inconsistent and at points extremely volatile; seriously consider your family and stress level before working with him!! read more

I am so happy with our experience! We met Jonnie in the middle of a year-long remodel during which we dealt with a lot of contractors who were...full of it. Person after person did their job slowly and at way over the estimated cost. Jonnie was the opposite. He came over for our scheduled estimate ON TIME, hallelujah! He was kind, knowledgeable, and gave me a price right there after he checked everything out thoroughly. The price was totally fair -- not the lowest bid we got, and definitely not the highest. Because our project involved tearing up vinyl flooring and refinishing the wood underneath, he let us know that the price could change if he found something surprising underneath. To me, after all the jerks we've dealt with, I worried that he was just laying the groundwork for telling us a higher price down the road. He told me he'd be back on Monday and would be done by Tuesday. I thought, "yea, right." 830AM Monday, his crew showed up. They worked all day, left at 4PM, and came back the next day as scheduled. They finished the project and billed me for the exact price estimated - a miracle. Is it sad that someone doing their job well and on time and the estimated price is miraculous? Maybe. But that doesn't take away from what an amazing job they did. The floor IS BEAUTIFUL. We are so happy. We will definitely call Jonnie again when we refinish the rest of the floors and the stairs. Few contractors even offer it so if that is what you want, Johny is an option. Please note that Swedish finish odor will stick around for some time and even though you can move in you do want to plan 3 nights after the work of not being in those vapors. Our red oak hardwood floor in dining/kitchen area is 30 years old and had never been refinished. It had black spots and deep scratches, looked terrible. I asked Jonnie if he could do a swedish finish in one day. His crew came in and completely sanded down and applied two coats of swedish finish in one day. We stayed in a hotel overnite and had two fans in the windows directing the fumes out. Over the next couple days we kept windows open with plenty of ventilation. The floor is absolutely beautiful.
