Summer is definitely here and there is no better way to enjoy a sunny Saturday afternoon, than with a tasty sandwich! I ordered a make your own cold sandwich. It was on sourdough bread with mayo, yellow mustard, lettuce, provolone cheese and turkey. When I say they give you a lot of meat I'm not joking! They do not skimp on it at all. It was the perfect classic sandwich. My hubby ordered the capital club, and he said it did not disappoint. Of course I had to have a little taste. once again they did not hold back on the delicious meat and bacon. Bread is always soft and fluffy and the veggies are crisp and delicious. What a frickin' find! You have to step off of the R Street "commercial" block to find Dad's, but you will be glad you did. I just liked the fact that it is a fun muraled old house set up with a screened front door and a counter to order from. Place your order and grab a metal bar stool out front on the street (there is like a dozen or so) and sit at the narrow high bar with your fellow diners (they are all friendly) to chow down on your fantastic sandwiches and/or salads. We ordered the Kings Reuben and a Southside salad. Both of these were awesome! One of the best Reubens I have ever had outside of a specific Jewish Deli I love. Dad's is much closer to home. The pastrami was on the salty side but not overpowering and may just be what other folks may enjoy. Sacto - Tritip Cheesteak Sandwich It came with a gravy cheese like sauce which I believe is a signature sauce for this establishment. My husband gave this sandwich a 4 out 5 for that reason. Baja Bird from Dad's = instant favorite. Perfectly grilled chicken, It's the first sandwich I've had with chicken thigh -- and honestly, great choice. Simply the best sandwich in Sac! DAD's is a small sandwich shop on S Street, and their funky space has a cool vibe with a small outdoor patio. I've walked by many times and finally stopped by on a weekday for lunch. DAD's has a standard menu or the option to build-your-own hot or cold sandwich. If you're in the mood for something different, they also serve hot dogs! I wanted to go with one of their creations and opted for the Turnpike (cold). I ordered my sandwich without onions and mayo along with a small side of potato salad. Service brings your order to you, and I opened my sandwich to check that it was made correctly. Randomly found myself in the mood for a sandwich and matcha combo for brunch and since I haven't had the chance to sample too much of the sandwich scene in Sac, I had to do a lil bit of research to figure out the best nearby options. Tbh, I had initially settled on Juno's based on recs and reviews but it was unfortunately closed on Monday -- a happy accident which led me to discover DAD's, another local favorite. The storefront is a quaint little shop in Midtown along the R Street corridor, with eclectic/amusing decor and a menu that boasts a variety of West-Coast inspired deli sandwiches featuring plenty of avocado and arugula. I opted for the Hot Blonde chicken sandwich while my boyfriend got the Sacto Tri-tip Cheesesteak. Surprisingly, I enjoyed both almost equally (the Dirty Blonde won with only a slight edge over its opponent) despite not typically being a big fan of cheese steaks. As you can see from the dope cross-sections pictured, these sandwiches are PACKED with fresh and quality ingredients. My chicken sandwich was an explosion of flavor with the garlic aioli, brown mustard and hot sauce combo, while the cheese steak had the most delicious beer cheese with delicious peppery notes to complement the tri tip. Personally, my only qualm was that they are a little heavy-handed with the sauces, making these sandwiches a little wet... I'd probably ask for less sauce next time though I appreciated how well they combined together to enhance their respective meats. My bf also mentioned that he would've preferred chicken slices rather than chunks, which admittedly would have made the sandwich more cohesive (my half definitely fell apart towards the end). We stopped by the Mill a couple blocks away to pick up an accompanying matcha latte and enjoyed our meal nearby at McKinley Park. A thoroughly satisfying Monday brunch and I can't wait to come back (the Broadway Burnout and Beach Bum are next on my list to try). Poorly assembled crap sandwich. My Beach Bum sandwich looked like it was slopped together & ingredients carelessly placed. Hella messy. Honestly, I can't say much about the service cuz I wasn't there but the sandwich is a 2/10. Perfect for someone with an unrefined palette or lack of tastebuds. Never had a turkey sandwich that tastes so bland. Would rather have gotten something else from another sandwich spot. I haven't been to Dad's Sandwiches since long before COVID, but I'm glad to see it's still here. It's a charming little spot that's the definition of a hole in the wall, and it's got a real vibe going inside. I ordered the Hot Blonde for takeout and it was ready within minutes. The ingredients tasted fresh, everything from the chicken to the aioli to the bread was super flavorful and definitely justified the price. Dollar for dollar, your money is better spent here than at a lot of corporatized sandwich spots and locally coveted deli counters... I won't name names. It was a delicious and hefty sandwich, and it is not always easy to find both. In hindsight, I should've gone for the tri tip that was calling my name--but I'll save it for a return trip. YOWZA - what a sandwich shop - tons of pre-designed combos with cool names, and it's fine and dandy to get a plain ham'n'cheese with no fancy stuff (well, except for guac and cream cheese). First time stopping by this joint. I've grown into the guy who orders a cheeseburger when I'm at a burger spot for the first time to see if I should bother with the rest of the menu in the future. Is that weird? Am I gonna start yelling at clouds soon? Anyway, I got a "standard" sandwich this time. Ordered a Dad's Cold Classic - turkey, provolone, French roll, all the toppings. I asked for extra special sauce on the side since I saw it on the menu but my sandwich didn't include it. $12.96 since they knock a few percent off for cash payment. I called ahead and the order was ready earlier than promised. The inside is small but packed full of character. Next time I'll eat there so I can get a better feel for the place. I was in and out in less than a minute - service was quick and the people working seemed pleasant enough. I looked at the menu online but didn't browse pictures ahead of time so I didn't know what I was getting myself into. The bag felt heavy for just one sandwich. Nice. I had a few more errands left but I snuck a couple bites after I parked at my next location. It's wrapped in two layers of paper and a piece of masking tape. This is a two-handed sandwich. Thankfully, they threw a couple of decent napkins in the bag because it got a bit messy after the first bite. It was so big that I had to grab the measuring tape when I got home and verify it was about 4 inches tall. Legit felt like I was unhinging my jaw for a few bites. Anyway, I digress... Bread 4/5 They told me on the phone that they were out of a few bread options so I settled for the French roll. I guess they run out of things over lunch time so I'll go earlier for a future visit. The bread was fresh and complimented everything. It certainly wasn't the main character but if you're eating something like a cheesesteak or banh mi, then you know how important bread is to the whole package. By the time I got home, it was starting to absorb most of the juices, so you'll want to eat the sandwich within 30 minutes for maximum freshness. Meat & Cheese 4/5 The meat is the main character in the sandwich. For those of you that are particular about your sandwich ratios, this place might not be for you, unless you want micromanage your order beyond belief. Personally, if I was making a sandwich at home, I would use about half the amount of meat. The turkey was higher quality than I was expecting in terms of texture and flavor. For context, my daily driver that I prefer is super thin sliced peppered turkey from Corti Bros. This reminds me more of Thanksgiving-style roasted turkey that is sliced at medium thickness. The provolone was straightforward. Good texture and provided a decent barrier between the veggies and meat. The only thing that was a little off was that there were a few times where I got that unpleasant zap of too much salt while chewing a bite. This is coming from someone who uses Diamond Kosher Salt liberally when cooking at home and seasons at every stage. I love my salt. I'll keep this in mind for my next order to see if it's consistent. Veggies 4/5 Lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles were all standard and fresh. Pickles didn't overpower the sandwich and were complimentary. Decent amount of crunch and were sliced at an average thickness. The red onions were a part of the mix and did their job. I think I underrated them at the first bite and had more as I continued eating. The biggest take away was that the tomato ACTUALLY TASTED LIKE TOMATO. It was fresh, delicious, and not soggy. I took a piece out and ate it by itself and was impressed. I could've had more on the sandwich and been cool with it. Sauces 5/5 The sandwich had a good combination of mayo and mustard. While it leaked for a few bites, I did not have a single bite that was dry. The biggest surprise was the deliciousness of the special sauce. Somewhat unique. I tried some by itself and it had a bit of zip, as well as a good combo of creaminess, saltiness, and flavor. This makes me want to try their other sandwiches that have the sauce on it. -- Overall, I'd rate this a solid 4/5. It didn't completely blow my mind but it's definitely worth a try. Given that I could only finish half and will eat the rest for dinner, I think the price to value ratio is fair, but it almost skews to above average given the amount of meat used. While I like a different ratio for my standard sandwiches, I'll come back here when I'm craving a thick stack of meat. Check this out if you're in the area! A Sacramento staple, Dad's satisfies all cravings. Although they don't offer any discounts to actual dad's (I asked) I would gladly pay full price for their amazing food. They're serving up some huge sandwiches packed with tasty meats and any toppings you'd like on the softest of breads. The interior of this place is small as it's really just a takeout place. There is seating outside pending weather. The cashier was really friendly and patient as we decided what to order. Went with the Mac & cheese, a salad for my mom, and the governator sandwich and also a turkey and avocado sandwich. Went outside to wait and within 15 minutes everything was ready to go. One bite into my sandwich and I was ecstatic. The pastrami was juicy, the avocado creamy, the sandwich was dripping with sauce and the soft ciabatta bread held it all together. I couldn't have ordered a more perfect sandwich. The macaroni and cheese was awesome too and I would order it again on my next visit.
