I went here with my boyfriend for his birthday. He always wanted to try beef wellington, as it is difficult to find it in Philadelphia. The drive to the restaurant was a little long and windy but we were at once happy we made the drive once we got to the place. The front look of the restaurant is very pretty, quaint and all lit up. We were seated near the window but asked to be seated in the foyer where there was more lighting and intimacy. The food was delicious. We each had the oysters, and then the bison short rib, and pan fried scallops to start. He had the beef wellington and I had the duck breast. Our dinner was accompanied with a bottle of wine, which I think makes more sense to order the bottle than to pay for each glass. While we were too full to order dessert, they made a mini dessert plate with raspberries and whip cream anyway so that he can have a candle and make a birthday wish. I think that extra little touch goes a long way. The service was good. If I lived closer to this restaurant, I would probably go more. All in all, I enjoyed my experience here. read more

My husband and I stayed here last night for our anniversary. The staff at dinner was wonderful, checking in was relatively easy, the bed was very hard and uncomfortable, and there's no way to change the temperature of the room (it was freezing). There was an extra blanket. There is red mold (serratia marcesens) at the bottom of the shower curtain but otherwise pretty clean. My biggest problem was the owner Francesca. She didn't introduce herself, just said "you're here for breakfast??" when we walked downstairs in the morning. She made us feel like we were inconveniencing her. We had paid for a continental breakfast which she made very awkward and uncomfortable. She listed all of the items they had ("croissants, muffins, coffee cake, etc) instead of having everything laid out on a table. Then she only allowed us to pick ONE item from that long list. I asked for fruit and a muffin, and her reply was "it's not all you can eat!!" Eventually I did have yogurt, fruit and a muffin which was delicious, but by that time the ambience was destroyed and my stress level was no longer a "zero". Thank you Francesca! read more

How Perfect! How Patrick! Compared to others, ours was a somewhat rushed wedding in a 7 month turnaround. GWI is completely equipped to deal with that. We weren't having a huge wedding either: 75 people, which is perfect for the GWI. Patrick was very diligent with his emailing and fine attention to detail throughout the entire planning process. I have no idea how many couples he deals with at once, but Patrick has a way of making you feel important among the rest. We had a Saturday afternoon wedding at the General Warren. So we stayed the night before and stayed night of in their beautiful and unique rooms, which really helped with my stress level. Both innkeepers are absolutely delightful. They also made sure we had coffee and something to eat both mornings. Patrick was there coordinating that morning, making sure everything went smooth amongst the chaos of getting ready. And the rain held off just in time for us to have our ceremony outdoors! During the wedding and reception, Patrick and the staff at the General Warren were absolutely wonderful and completely experienced. They made sure everyone ate and everyone had a full glass. And how my guests raved about the food! The GWI was able to accommodate our vegetarian guests as well. Everyone had an amazing and fun time; our wedding had a life of its own at the GWI. Especially my Jersey guests were amazed by the venue and how it isn't like the rest. In the end, what we received for our wedding at the General Warren Inn and what we paid for: it was worth every single penny and then some. What you get in quality for the price you pay is absolutely worth it! We cannot wait to go back for anniversaries or a special getaway. We went here last Friday for a surprise birthday dinner. This is a fancy & expensive place to go and great for a special occasion. Not kid friendly-this is very much for an older crowd. They have valet and self parking. The inn has a dining room and separate bar area. It is probably best to make reservations unless you plan to sit at the bar. We were promptly seated when we arrived and had a great waiter. They have some specialty cocktails in the $10-$11 range plus beer and wine. I went with a bottle of a local cider which was a dry cider that I very much liked (only cider option on the menu). For our large party we ordered the tableside Cesar salad which is $20 and serves two. It is a very large portion and we were able to get about 4 servings out of. Definitely worth the price and an exceptional Cesar salad. Others in our party ordered the soup of the day which was a broccoli cheddar that got rave reviews. As we were being served our entrees, a few servers helped out and got all our orders confused and did not know who got what. No big deal but for an upscale place I expect more. For my entrée I went with the 6 oz filet with the béarnaise sauce on the side. It was cooked too my liking and came with green beans and potatoes. I was very disappointment that this entrée was served with 5 pieces of potatoes-I kid you not. For the price you are paying you should at least get an entire potato. The rest of our party went with the daily special of the sirloin steak which was a huge portion of meat. Save room for dessert as they have a very nice selection and are know for their tableside bananas foster. I went with their famous pecan cheesecake which was delightful. read more

I have had a reception at the General Warren in twice now. The food is good and the atmosphere is nice, but they typically seem to be understaffed. We went to the General Warren Inn last night for a birthday celebration. It will go down as one of the worst dining experiences in our history. My salmon tasted like it was cooked the day before and then over microwaved a half an hour before serving. The fish was totally dried out sitting on top of an unattractive slurry of carrots. It was accompanied by kale that was so over cooked that it was hardly recognizable. The final touch was the four stalks of plain overcooked asparagus. My husband's dish was better but his fish was also overcooked and the broccoli appeared dry and blackened. We were so hungry, we ate but then our unfinished plates sat in front of us for 15 to 20 minutes. At last, another waitress decided to clear the plates and offer us dessert. Awkward. The best part of the night was the coffee! We had noted on our open table reservation, that it was a birthday celebration. I guess the restaurant does not consider reading these notes important, since it was never recognized or mentioned. In fact, the next day, when I checked my open table account, we were noted as still dining! They could at least get that right. My big question is.....is there a real chef in the kitchen? If so, time to get a new one FAST. Dishes that go for $27 to $32 should be sooo much better. And the service needs a giant over haul. On a better note, the bar area is charming. Stop in for a drink at the bar but skip the restaurant. read more

They did an excellent job, the ambience was wonderful, the food was good, they met my special dietary requests with a smile. The Beef Wellington is worth the visit, fish also well prepared whatever the option is that evening. Great special occasion place, warm attentive service from maitre'd to the wait staff. Leave room for dessert, both the old and new pastry chefs know their craft and set a perfect finishing touch to the meal. Had dinner last night with my wife and her 93 year old aunt. My wife and I both ordered beef wellington, which we both agreed had a sour, off kind of flavor that was not pleasant. Not sure if it was the meat or the so-called foi gras filling, which definitely did not taste good. They should be visited by the county health department! Bitterly Disappointed!!! My wife & I have been coming here for years. We typically reserve it for special occasions particularly charming when it snows. So it was appropriate to make reservations this Mother's Day. Because all of our boys live out of town with the grandchildren it was just my wife & myself. We arrived a few minutes late were seated promptly and ordered drinks. The bread basket arrived and was less than thrilling (four small pieces of cold french bread). I remember a better basket in the past. We ordered salad and an entree requesting thatr the entree not be started until we had finished our salads. My wife ordered caesar salad & I had the spinach salad. They were bland and not all that tasty. Again a disappointment from our last visit. (...Oh and the waitress showed up 5 minutes later with the pepper mill after we were well into our salads.) After we completed our salads our entree arrived in about 10 minutes. The salmon my wife ordered was overdone and small (6 ozs maybe) and hot. My crabcake was also on the small side also and hot. The vegetables on both plates were ice cold. Our waitress showed up in two to three minutes and we advised her of the problem. She asked if we wanted the entire plate taken back and we said no, just bring us hot vegetables. We proceeded to eat our entrees, however nobody ever came back with the vegetables. We finished our entrees before we could find our waitress to flag her down and advise her of what happened. Her response was "sorry" ...can we buy you dessert. ....STOP THE PRESSES!!! This is supposed to be a fine dining restaurant!!! I advised that we were not interested in dessert or coffee and that she better do better than that before I refused to pay the bill. She returned shortly and advised that she had removed the crab cake entry from the bill. I then proceeded to tell her that last October (2014) I had brought 5 college classmates and their wives all of whom live out of town for dinner at the General Warren and afterwards receive several complaints about the food. Again she said "sorry". I reluctantly paid the bill and on the way out asked the maitre d/owner/general manager to read my comments on the bill which advised how disappointed we were and would not be returning again! He followed us out into the parking lot where I relayed the other experience from last October and you know what he said...you guessed it...sorry. Sorry is what the General Warren has become. Great surroundings, loads of history, poor service, and the jury is still out on the food because we were not able to enjoy a full meal. It appears several of the waitresses have been there for several years and also appears they have new uniforms that have initial GW on the chest. You would assume that stands for General Warren. I am wondering whether it shouldn't stand for "Gee Whiz". Can't speak for all the waitresses but the fact that ours seemed to think she could just buy us off with "free dessert" shows an utter lack of respect! She probably still thought she could collect her 15% to 20% tip. Wrong!!! No service, no tip! Our son used to be an Executive Chef in several fine dining restaurants so we know what fine dining looks like. It appears that the General Warren is now using "servers" to bring the food out from the kitchen instead of the waitress. That's fine if there continues to be good communication between the server and the waitress. On Sunday between 3:00 & 4:15 PM the restaurant was not that busy yet the waitress did not maintain control over her customers. Not sure if the restaurant has new ownership, but in my opinion they need to "right the ship" quickly before we read that after many years the General Warren has closed. (4.25 stars) We entertained a new client group of approx. 15, with folks present from Germany and FL. Passing through a crowded and narrow bar area, we were seated in a very pleasant private back room. Our "escort" for this passage seemed to have a bit of an attitude/ personal issues problem, but he was easily ignored and not seen again. This is a cozy 18th century inn which still functions as a B&B; lucky guests! Our service in the back room was excellent and attentive when present, if a little slow between visits. The German guests and a few domestic vinophiles guided the selection of an appropriate wine for each course, and the wine cellar was appropriately stocked to accommodate. Obviously, fifteen different dinners made the selection of wines difficult, but the group didn't seriously misfire once, and some of the pairings were brilliant. I began with the Snapper Soup, and it was nothing short of amazing; pleasant, warm flavors perfectly bound by just the right amount of sherry. This soup was a new protein experience for our European guests, and they were thrilled with their choice, raving only until the next courses were served. Entree choices were overwhelmingly either the giant crab cake or one of the steak choices, and everybody was very pleased with their choices-- and enjoying the wine and conversation. One diner who had an affinity for game, ordered the kitchen's interesting "surf and turf" choice, a seared duck breast with sea scallops. That guest knows her way around a kitchen, and was thrilled; from my perspective the duck looked a bit overcooked. A variety of shared dessert choices, all very homemade and very good, finished the experience. A remarkable dining experience, which approached perfection. read more

Was out in Malvern for work. Honestly it's far from the airport and was my first time out here although I've been to Philly before. Came here for a team dinner and we went straight to their outdoor seating in back. Really cute place, beautiful garden off to the side. We had a prix fix dinner. I chose the cauliflower and corn shower, the crab cakes and key lime for dessert. First they brought out appetizers while we were at the bar, cocktail shrimp, pigs in a blanket, bacon wrapped scallops and chicken skewers, all of them were delicious. The soul was divine, crab cake was good but I've had better. It was on a bed of rice which were cooked too long and mushy and the key lime was light fluffy and airy. I didn't like the outdoor seating because the tables and chairs were all on a incline. I was at the bottom and the condensation from my water and drink cup was pooling on my place mat and spilled over only my jeans. It's an older establishment but may want to even out the back outdoor area. read more

The restaurant was not busy. The service was very slow. My halibut was barely warm and dry on the top. The bottom was juicy and delicious as the entire filet should have been. Seemed like they were more concerned about getting grill marks than cooking it properly. I was not the only one in our party who ordered it with similar results. Portions are quite small so glad qe all ordered salad or soup. The appetizers were all delicious. They seem to use some strange flavor combinations - the grilled cauliflower had an overpowering sweetness. The sauce on the pork tenderloin had cinnamon in it. The risotto was not very creamy and again just warm. By the time I was asked about my meal I had eaten half. To their credit they offered to make me a new plate but we'd waited so long for dinner already I said no. Just expected a lot more for entrees priced over 30$. read more

Last night we had dinner at the General Warren Inn. I understand it is considered an upscale restaurant - but after ordering the "Steak Special" I will not be going back. It was a $49 special - supposed to be 15 oz. NY Strip steak - if it was 15 oz., the bone in the steak was 8 oz. I truly felt ripped off! If I knew the steak was going to be around 8 oz - I would of ordered something else. Who puts a NY Strip on special - and have it on the bone? Historic inn with a lovely restaurant, friendly people. I had a suite with a fireplace and its own room and a four poster bed with a little set of stairs to reach it. Clean and pretty and comfortable and special. I found the place on the Wharton Eshrick Museum website. It's nearby and this made a great place to have dinner and sleep after a visit there. Everyone I spoke to, from phone reservations on, was warm, nice and went beyond. You can have dinner at the bar. Had lamb with faro. Good martinis. A very great place to stay when visiting the George Nakashima House or the Wharton Eshrick Museum. Very close to the Brandywine museum too. A totally lovely stay with very nice people. read more

Saturday night was our first visit. Disappointed. Service was so far below average that we had to remind our server that we ordered a bottle of wine for the table after one glass of wine was brought. There is a real lack of attentiveness by the entire staff and the night dragged on due to such poor service. The rack of lamb was mediocre with very small portions and undistinguishable side items equally tasteless and poor quality. My wife had filet and again below average quality for the price charged.When you need to ask for water and bread several times from a completely inattentive inexperienced server that is the clue we should have gotten up and left. The real tragedy of the evening was the failed attempt at Bananas Foster which the server admitted was prepared incorrectly only to wheel the cart back to kitchen. We were told that another server would return and prepare this dessert as it should be and then served. The same server returns with 2 plates of tasteless bananas foster from the kitchen with a poor excuse. When you spend over $200. plus for dinner for 2 the establishment needs professional staff at every level. We will not return. read more

The General Warren Inne is a historical and adorable place. This was my second time coming here, first time was great from what I remember, as it was years ago. This time I was disappointed with the food. All of the meats we ordered were great, but the texture of the gnocchi was wrong and the grains weren't cooked properly. The service was also really slow, over 40 minutes passed between soups/appetizers before our main dishes arrived. I would suggest going into the city if you're looking to have a nice meal. read more
