When I was in high school, underage kids used to hit this place up for tattoos and piercings without their parents' permission. When I turned 18 I got my belly button pierced here. The girl pierced me crooked, pulled it out and told me to come back a week from the day so she could redo it. Have you ever felt your skin regenerate in 15 minutes? It's a fuckin' weird feeling and I don't recommend it. I came back a week later and my belly was re-pierced, only to get all Exorcist on me a couple of months later. I'm talking pus and strange skin-like bits pulsing out of this cavity, man. I finally pulled the damn thing out and called it quits. A few months later I got my belly button pierced again by this really cool guy at a Berkeley retailer. No problems and no complications. It's been three years and my piercing is fine. Final verdict? Say NO to Generation Rock! Bleargh. read more

The only reason we came here is because Zebra had a one hour wait and my daughter wanted to get her nose pierced today. So we called this place to see if there was a wait and we were told there was not. When we got there, there was one customer (who was obviously a friend of an employee) and he was smoking something. Not exactly sure what but definitely against the law. When we signed the consent form they shoved us in the back room without giving us any information. The piercer, Shelly, did not explain anything to us and when we began recording she stopped and told us we were not allowed to record the piercing. I let her know that we have always been able to record them elsewhere and that was an important part of the experience for us. She then started becoming extremely rude and told us that it's not a good idea to get a piercing if recording it is important. I let her know that we wanted to discuss whether or not we wanted to go through with it because of how uncomfortable she was making us feel and how unprofessional she was. She says it's rude of us to make her wait because she already stayed 30 min past her shift tonight. Then we went to the main part of the store where the owner, "Steve" is. I let him know the situation and how we were upset with Shelly and we no longer wanted to get this piercing done by her. He stated that was fine. Then Shelly comes out demanding us to pay her $10 because she opened the nose ring. The owner tells her it's ok but she still demands we pay her. What kind of business owner allows their employee to treat customers like this. It was ridiculous and crazy. Lesson learned, no matter how busy Zebra is, we are waiting! I have had three tattoos done by Andy. My first by him was done a few years back. A large angel across my back. I then had to upgrade my first tattoo after the Angel, because it looked so insignificant. I had him do a larger, blue open rose on my left upper back. Then I got my third tattoo from him, a version of a ying yang on my hip. All my tattoos look good. My cover up, needs a slight retouch, and I had left messages a month after to have it touched. I also got pierced by Andy. The owner and the guys in the shop are very friendly. If you are looking for ink, just head to downtown Concord. They do great work. read more

I only trust G Rock with very simple tattoos.I usually visit Berkeley for difficult tatoos. I couldn't think of anything else more simple than a peace sign the size of the eraser on a pencil at the top of my ear like where an original cartilage piercing would go and a letter K and a spade sign on the inner part of my lip. Well the guy said that the lip tat would last at least a month but it only lasted a night. The very next day it disappeared. And in order to recieve my 10 minute tattoo i had to wait for an hour and half he kept taking other customers for piercings that he rushed through. This place is very unprofessional and has a turn over of employees. I have had numerous "bad experiences" here. read more

This place is ok, nothing to write home about. WHEELCHAIR USERS: There is a step in front but they will let you in through the back, it's a real tight squeeze though. The back entrance is full of boxes and assorted things, not to mention it's super narrow but Steve helped me through. Overall, it's probably not worth your time to go here. read more

I have not been here for a few years, just thought I should share my experience. I'm surprised they're still open. I got a tattoo here on my wrist. Horrible tattoo. Can't read it well. They sort of just threw it on. I used my high school ID that was a few years old. I explained that since I was in 10th grade 3 years ago, I'm 18 or older. Worked like a charm! I also got a star tattoo on my chest here, my brother drew the design and I did the same for his ass tat, a smiley face that said have a great day! I've had my star fixed since. So to start, I've been coming to Generation Rock for all my piercings since I was 15 years old. I've never had any problems and the experience is always great! Here's a tip - Don't listen to that previous review about minors getting pierced here. I've been coming here for 5 years and have never seen or heard of that happening. Andy and Sergio are the tattoo artists here and they're both awesome. I know Andy personally and I've received all 5 of my tattoos from him. He's very patient and will let you take your time in deciding the design and placement of your tattoo. My boyfriend once had him remove a stencil and reposition it 3 times until he was happy with it. Andy was very understanding and just wanted to make sure he was satisfied. He's not your typical tattoo artist who only cares about getting customers in and out and at the highest rate possible. The last tip I will leave you is not to judge a book by it's cover - this place doesn't look like much when you first come in but don't let that fool you. Make sure and watch your receipt. The owner of this store sneaks in extra charges and overcharges if you're not looking. I pointed out a price discrepancy on an item I was purchasing because there was different prices on the same product. He promised to charge the lower price. I had no reason to think otherwise and didn't pay attention to the price he was ringing up. After looking at my receipt, I pointed out he charged me the wrong price. So about a month ago I got my first tattoo with Andy. My experience was great. I brought in a design that I wanted as my first tattoo and that's exactly what I got. Andy was kind and focused on my drawing. I took a total of 3 hours and the best of it all I was not over charged especially for the size of the tattoo. My tattoo has not faded and looks beautiful as when I first got it. When I wear nice tops in the summer or when I go out clubbing I get great compliments about my tattoo. As a matter of fact toady I went to Starbucks and a young girl stated Vary Nice tattoo :-) I am vary pleased with my tattoo and I would recomend Generation Rock and Andy to any one. read more

This is my first Yelp review and I also signed up specifically to write a review on GenRock. I've been to GR many times and Steve is always very efficient, friendly but low-key and very discreet, which is important given the products being sold. I went one time for a scale and only wanted to spend $35 and he sold me the $80 scale for $35 because he thought it was a better scale and because I'm a regular customer (every few months). I got my first tattoo there from Andy last week who was friendly yet professional, and very patient as it took almost the whole 2 hr appt for me to decide on design and placement. We went over by almost half hour so he told me to come back when I decide on color and he'd do that for free, which I thought was really nice. Its my first (and likely last) tattoo, but I think he did a really great job. I'd definitely recommend to a friend. read more

Yeah ok, its a "head shop", and has tons of t-shirts, body jewelry, and incense - all good if thats what you need. They are currently in limbo as for piercings - if you are a piercer, go apply, they need a good hand! As for tattoos, I love love love Andy! He's my go-to local guy, and for good reason. He's got a great eye for detail, is willing to work with original ideas, and enjoys doing tattoos that arent "the usual". I call my left arm "Andy's arm" because most of it has been done by him - and what wasn't done by him (an artist at a shop just outside of Concord did a tattoo that I just freaking hate - its crap) he's helping to fix up. I've had small, simple flash stuff done by him, original design, and portrait. The portrait is freaking amazing - I couldnt be happier with all the work he's done for me. I've been a customer of GR since it opened, and have seen the turn over in artists... if you have regrets because you got "mauled by a tiger" in the past, maybe give it another shot. I've been coming here since I was in high school back then it was a guy doing the piercings and tattoos it was okay not great. This time I was really happy with the service provided by Shelly. She was so professional and her attitude was so positive she made me feel really comfortable. From the moment I walked in she made me feel really comfortable and explained everything to me in detail. She made sure that I was sure exactly where I wanted my piercing. She gave me some advice on future piercings which I completely agreed with her she is very knowledgeable. What I really like best was her personality she's really sweet, happy and willing to help and answer any questions you might have. She was so good at her job that I didn't even feel when she pierced it, my nose by the way which I've had it done before and it hurts so much I cried. Usually I go get piercings and tattoos done with friends so I was feeling a little weird going in there by myself this time, until i SAT with Shelly she was great I felt like I knew her for some time. She gave me options on how to take care of my piercing after and also told me a way that I can save my money and not spend it on products to heal it, any one that saves me money is automatically at the top of my list. This is by far one of the best smoke shops I've ever been to. They aren't the biggest and they don't have a massive selection of glassware but their glassware is high quality and their selection is good enough. One thing that sets generation rock apart from the rest is their customer service. Steve and Amed have been so helpful and accommodating to me. My main reason for going here is for electronic cigarette parts and liquids. They have great prices, are very knowledgeable about what they are selling and are top notch when it comes to advice or help if you ever have an issue. You need to check out generation rock.
