    Evening view at Generations
    Irene B.

I have mixed feelings about this all-inclusive, enjoyed our time there and thought the food choices were great. Beaches were not pretty but snorkeling was fun. Spa was decent. Beware of timeshare pushers. First of all, my husband and I booked our reservations at El Dorado Royale. When we arrived at the El Dorado Royale to check-in, they offered us an upgrade - larger room, infinity pool, and ocean view. However, the room offered was going to be at Generations Riviera Maya which is no longer in El Dorado Royale. We were convinced to move over to Generations because it seemed like a good deal & told us we would have access to all the restaurants within EDR. We were given a $400 resort credit for accepting. We suspected they might have been overbooked at EDR so tried to push us over there. Upon arrival at the Generations hotel lobby which was pretty far from EDR, there was an empty building with one person at the desk - which made us scared that we must have been scammed. ROOM: On arrival to our room after a long checkin process, I was relieved. The rooms are really bigger than EDR, nice infinity pool off the 1st floor and even a small living room and outdoor seating area. View was a little obstructed by palm trees but still saw the ocean. However, we discovered it was a great spot to watch the shows each evening! A set of lights didn't work which made the room really dark but they fixed it the next day after we mentioned it. Room smelled musty from the moisture. Room was clean but housekeeping was sporadic on times they came by. The fridge was not always restocked. FOOD/DRINKS: Overall, food was great for an all inclusive. Lots of restaurants to try. Dishes are smaller portions but very nicely plated for a gourmet experience. Most restaurants enforce the dress code so dress nice to dinner! Rincon (Mexican): ok. Had the fish and it came with a nice sauce and mashed plantains. D'Italia Casitas : good. one of the fancier meals with even smaller portions. Order 2 apps or you will be hungry. Pesto/shrimp pasta was yummy, the tomato sauce pappardelle pasta was bland and looked more like fettuccine, steak filet was cooked nice with truffle mash potatoes, osso buco was mediocre, fish was very good. Tiramisu was delicious. Fuentes: Yucatan food. I liked the live cooking show, but they only had time to cook a couple things and the rest was just plating food. Overall, it was fun but the food was ok. Kampai: husband enjoyed it, I thought it was good. Tasty but not authentic Asian food Santa Fe: I liked this restaurant the best. Dishes were served family style and you get a taste of everything. After ordering the entrees, they came out with a variety of dishes for apps & bread - everything was AWESOME. Wine Kitchen (Generations restaurant): this was also excellent. My only complaint is that they don't offer a free taste of a wine paired with some of your meal. Wine other than the standard red and wine offered at the resort is additional charge. All the food here was amazing. My friends and I tried many of the apps and shared our entrees. Drinks at EDR vs Generations: we got drinks at various places during our vacation. Generations had better bars and drinks were consistently better. All the EDR drinks tasted sugary or watered down. The drinks were especially bad at Jo Jo's bar. Sling bar had the best cocktails and margaritas! We even thought the house Cabernet was good. SERVICE: Overall, the entire staff was extremely nice and always treated us well. Wait staff were slower than I would expect at a nice all-inclusive. However, I have no issue with going to the bars and getting myself a drink. Beach service was also pretty light, we saw them maybe a couple times while we were hanging out the whole day in the beach cabanas. (Maybe we weren't tipping enough). Restaurant service was similar, I asked for lemon slices for my tea during breakfast and never got it. No big deal but just felt like I was ignored sometimes. The one place that was spectacular was the Sling bar staff. The bartenders were wonderful and fun to talk to. We didn't use our butlers much. While they were very helpful with a couple reservations to Santa Fe and D'Italia Casitas, they didn't get us a reservation at Fuentes which we requested the first day of vacation. We found out later on the EDR side that Generations people were not allowed to book reservations at Fuentes (which is ridiculous because we asked if we would have access to all restaurants when we moved over to Generations). Our butlers said that Fuentes was completely booked which was not true and we felt they weren't telling us the whole truth. We went to Fuentes through our friend staying at EDR and there were plenty of empty tables... I think this is false advertising for people staying at Generations and they should be aware of. I suspect generations people will get only early/late reservations or none at all during busy times. We eat early anyways so we were ok with it

Stayed at this resort for three nights earlier this month and it was awesome! If you get a room on the first, second, or third floor you will have a pool on your balcony. This resort is connected to three other resorts, so you get access to all resorts. There is sooooo much to do! Everyday they have different activities to do. They have beach volleyball, water volleyball, bikes to rent, fire shows, a green house tour, cooking class, and many other activities! There are so many places to eat as well. The butlers are extremely kind and cater to you. The workers are diligent and friendly. Some of the other resorts are adult only. However there is a daycare for children ages four and up. During our stay, we saw weddings everyday. My only complaint about this resort is the slowness of the waiters. They take forever!! The food takes awhile as well. Oh yeah, our room key was always messed up and we had to get it reprogrammed a couple of times.

A little belated, but my now-husband and I stayed at Generations in March/April 2015. We absolutely loved our stay here! The rooms are spacious and luxurious (see pictures). All of the rooms at this resort are ocean view (SCORE!) and the first three floors of each building have swim-up balconies. The rooms are quite a hike from the main lobby, but the resort provides butlers that will take you around the property in golf carts. We did have one awkward experience when we were sitting on our balcony and all of a sudden our "butler" just showed up unannounced in our room without knocking...but other than that, it was fantastic. The spa was awesome, one of the best massages I've ever had. The food was out of this world, and the resort doesn't limit you as to how many nights you can dine at each restaurant. Jade was our favorite, which was Asian cuisine - the sushi and curry were amazing. FYI the sushi is not part of the 'all-inclusive' package, and costs extra - but it's worth it! The Wine Kitchen is the "fancy" restaurant and you are supposed to make reservations for that one. One thing that we especially loved about Generations was that it is connected to two other resorts (El Dorado resorts - one of which is adults only), and your all-inclusive package extends to those places as well. So, we were able to mosey on over to the other resorts and enjoy their bars, pools, and restaurants. It's super easy to get to them; there is a nice walking path that connects all three. We don't have kids, but Generations seems to have some pretty great activities for kids. One morning, we came downstairs to find kids rolling in one of those inflatable 'hamster ball' looking things in the pool - it looked so fun! One night, there was a show on the beach with dancers and fire eaters. The staff were so great and friendly. Very attentive to requests, and extremely hard-working. I recommend this resort to anyone headed to Riviera Maya! I would go back in a heartbeat!

My wife and I travel a lot, and I must say this place is definitely at the top of our list. She's a…read moretravel agent, and I travel around with her, trying the resorts so she can recommend them to her customers. From the time we got here, with the ease of the check-in, to the rooms, the food, the amenities, and just the overall service, this place is run like a well-oiled machine! This is an older resort that still has the older Mexican Hacienda feel, with all of the modern upgrades and additions. You can tell they've put a lot of work into keeping this resort as authentic as possible. There was clearly a lot of thought put into every change and upgrade that was made to this resort. Our room was a corner suite at the end of the resort overlooking the ocean, the Dunas Suites. We thoroughly enjoyed getting up every morning to watch the sunrise, drink our coffee, and start the day! We had our own private pool, which was great to come back to and just soak and talk at the end of each day. The room and accommodations were absolutely top-notch! The food was absolutely amazing! We typically don't do the buffet, but we tried it, and it was the nicest buffet we have ever been to. We tried a variety of the different restaurants, and they were all absolutely amazing! For anyone that is a foodie, this is probably the best food I've ever had at an all-inclusive resort. They have three pools here: the Silver, which is a smaller pool in more of a natural setting; the Golden Pool, which has a lazy river and goes from Building 6 to 8; and then the main pool, which is one of the largest pools we've ever seen at a resort. It's HUGE! What I liked about it is they had two different bars there, and they have rafts available, which is super convenient as we usually bring our own. And yes, they have a lot of high-end booze and make some really good drinks at the pool bars! Each night after dinner, we would end up at the Plaza España! On our way, we would stop and get a churro at the churro cart, which I highly recommend, and then we would finish with a few drinks from the La Plaza Bar and live entertainment, which was usually a DJ or a live band! The later it got, the livelier it became, as the dance floor was a pretty hot attraction! A must-stop is Café Sisal, which offers hot and cold coffee drinks, fruit drinks, a variety of different sandwiches and pastries, and of course, their ice cream! This is a big resort, and if you are staying toward the oceanside, I would strongly recommend utilizing the golf cart services. We would at certain times, but a lot of the time we found a shortcut by the big pool that cut the walk in half. They have so much to offer, with a variety of different daily activities. Overall, this place is absolutely amazing, and I would strongly recommend it to anyone looking for an all-inclusive resort in Riviera Maya.

I was very pleasantly surprised with everything! From the food to the staff, to the activities and variety of spaces, it was really a wonderful experience. I also LOVED all the wildlife we saw! Especially the coatis. Once you arrive, you are greeted with a welcome drink and they take your luggage to your room. Our rooms weren't quite ready but we were able to head to the buffet and get some food. We had the deluxe junior suite, which was the cheapest room option. It was very spacious, with two double beds, a small couch, table and chairs, and a large bathroom with a jacuzzi tub and separate shower. We loved the location of the building as it was near the pools and all the restaurants. It's a bit further from the beach, but we didn't spend much time there. The resort features several restaurants: French, Italian/Mediterranean, sushi, Mexican, Thai/Asian, a buffet, and a surf & turf restaurant. There is also a coffee shop that's open late, and food trucks at the pool areas. The food was quite good, with lots of options and incredible care when it comes to food allergies. I loved the Petite Alsace experience (a private dining experience at the French restaurant), and at $59 per person extra it was totally worth it. The only food I didn't love was the room service - it was almost always cold. But the wings were tasty! The staff at this resort make it so fun - they were always smiling and friendly, and so entertaining. Sonia at the main pool bars was the best, mixing up all the best drinks! Speaking of drinks... they have everything you could possibly think of (except aperol). The specialty shots are very fun. The afternoon pool events were a blast - we watched the mechanical bull competition, participated in aqua yoga at the pool, learned about Mexican produce at the cooking class, and more. They have nightly entertainment like DJs and karaoke in the courtyard, as well as a show every night. We loved the magic show! We also did a yoga class and the bike tour - I highly recommend the bike tour on your first day as it helps get an overview of the layout of the resort. The Golden pool area is super quiet and calm vs. the main pool area. It was nice to switch it up mid-week with a more restful afternoon on the "lazy river." Tips: -Bring an insulated mug/cup for the pool (and a larger straw for frozen drinks) -A waterproof holder for your phone/tipping money at the swim up bar is nice to have -I went back and forth on bringing inflatable loungers... I didn't pack them but wish I had. You can find the resort's blue floating pads pretty easily but they are not very versatile (I prefer ones where you can sit more upright) -Bring a game/deck of cards to play while waiting for dinner. (There is a lot of entertainment too, but it was nice to have) -Large groups (more than 8) will likely have to split up for dinner at the restaurants I'm so glad I got to experience this resort. Some of the guests we met have been there 20+ times!

Outside of the gates is a whole different story. It's pretty intense out there with the police being fully militarized. They have machine guns mounted to trucks they stand on and ride around just for the presence, there are tons of people wanting to take advantage of dumb Americans at every turn. Watch yourself if you travel alone in Cozumel. It's designed solely to attract tourists. That draws out some colorful personalities in my experience. Traveled with ease from the oh so lovely Cancun International Airport. Interesting spot to say the least. We were warned not to communicate or accept anything from anyone except our driver. We arrive to the hotel really excited, somewhat cautious, and ready to have some fun. We were greeted at the front door and we handled a little paperwork, and then we were taken to our room by a wonderfully helpful chap. He showed us around the room, gave us a quick run down of the grounds, described the amenities, food situation, and some other pleasantries. He talked about the dining situation and gave us a map tour so we're would know how to navigate the grounds. They have a cool locker system in each room. The service folks just leave your anything in the locker and you don't have to interact with them at all. They just let you know it is there. Nice feature. The grounds themselves are absolutely gorgeous! It is so well kept, the attention to every detail goes so far beyond a normal resort. They comb the beach every morning. I kid you not. They seriously rake the entire shoreline before dawn. They also run a tractor to clear the seaweed from the beach. Insane dedication to making your stay great. The restaurant situation is so fucking rad. They have just about any food you might want covered between the what seemed like a dozen restaurants at the resort. I ate and ate and ate and ate.... I ate between meals, I ate between those meal and snack times. We had so much food!! Every dinner was 5-8 courses. I'm positive I could stay right here forever and never leave. Food heaven!! Spa is great too! It's a lovely relaxing oasis of self care. That's another review, but it's great. Don't take my word for it. Go for yourself! Cold plunges are good for the soul! They have shows every night in the theater and there was some sort of event being held every night in the common area. Some were private, others public. They construct stages, eating areas, weddings, happy hours with bands, and even corporate conferences. It's pretty wild the amount to building and tearing things down the do here. We rented a cabana bed one day and at the end of the day the built and transformed the beach into an elaborate engagement spot with candles everywhere, flowers, and a table for two. Very nice touch! All in all a fantastic experience. My only gripe was that the room smelled of mildew and/or too music moisture. C said something about it when we got there but it wasn't that noticeable to me. When I got home and unpacked my suitcase is when it hit me. There were clothes that I did not wear, just sat in the drawers and repacked, they all had to be washed as they smelled terrible after being packed and transported back home. I would come back monthly if possible. Nice place. '26 - 74

We paid for a Junior Suite Ocean View, clearly confirmed in our reservation. What we were given instead was a Junior Suite Tropical View with no ocean view at all -- not even partial. This is not a matter of interpretation; it is a clear mismatch between what was sold and what was delivered. From the beginning, the hotel was aware this was our honeymoon. We did not expect special treatment, but we did expect honesty and follow-through. Other honeymoon couples received gestures and attention; we received none -- and more importantly, we didn't even receive the room category we paid for. After reporting the issue, we were told the hotel was "fully booked" and that management would "look into it." Days went by with no resolution. Eventually, a supervisor explicitly offered a partial refund for the room category difference and a one-day beach cabana as a gesture. We accepted this in good faith. At checkout, the supervisor was suddenly "in a meeting." We provided our card details to another staff member so the refund could be processed. After departure, we followed up multiple times and received absolutely no response. No confirmation, no email, no refund, nothing. To be clear: * The food and general service were fine * The beach is beautiful * But selling an Ocean View and delivering a Tropical View is unacceptable, especially for a honeymoon * Offering a refund and then going silent is worse This experience seriously damaged our trust. A resort that markets itself around romance and special occasions should do better -- or at the very least, be honest and responsive. We would not return and cannot recommend this property based on how this situation was handled.

It felt private, secluded and quiet. We booked a Rooftop Ocean View Suite, but were delighted to get upgraded to the Two Bedroom villa. A bump from 966 to 1562 square feet of space (not including the extra outside space). The welcome drinks, popsicles (for the kids) and guacamole were great and of course the dramatic boat ride to your suite is one of a kind. The suites at Rosewood Mayakoba are amazing. Even the small suites are spacious (I think their smallest room is 788 sqft). Our suite had plentiful outdoor space, its own dock to the lagoon, a private plunge pool and also a large rooftop terrace. Truly too much space for our family of four (2 adults, 2 kids), but we happily enjoyed it. Service was stellar, which I expected at a high-end hotel. My most recent vacations have been to the Caribbean, so the combination of Mexican hospitality along with the Rosewood service really made for a nice stay. Our butler stayed in contact with us via Whatsapp, but we really didn't have many requests except for booking dinner reservations and ordering more cow's milk to the room for our baby. Our kids had their own monogrammed pillowcases, that we took home. The turn-down service also left small wooden figurines (indigenous) which was a nice touch for the kids. There's definitely an extra attention to detail that's on another level from other hotels. We were able to get a bike with training wheels and also a trailer for the kids to go on short bike rides with. The kids club was very good. Lots of planned activities throughout the day and an air conditioned indoor play area. Our daughter was 3, so one of us was with her, but I think kids 4 and older can stay alone. The staff was consistent and got to know our daughters pretty quickly. There are excursions within the property like the bat cave and boat rides which is nice (instead of just staying indoors doing arts and crafts). The family pool was just okay. There's a small shallow part for toddler to play in and also a bigger deeper pool. It's well kept, but I can see how some might say it's time for a renovation (which I believe they are doing). There isn't a very good gradual entry point in the bigger pool, so I would say it's not the most kid friendly for small children (no problem for bigger kids), since there's one step and then it drops off to 4 feet. The beach also is undergoing a lot of erosion along with the sargassum. It's narrow and slightly rocky, so I feel like if you plan on playing in the sand or spend a lot of time in the water, there might be better options. However, it's still quite scenic and perfectly fine for lounging in the recliner. Food was very good (especially breakfast at Casa del Lago), but is pricey like everyone mentions. La Fondita, the tostada restaurant in El Pueblito, is one of the better and more low-key options at Rosewood. There is a consistent kids menu at all the restaurants at Rosewood. We did not get a chance to check out the restaurants at the other hotels. TL;DR - Luxurious and family friendly resort that shines with their accommodations and service. It's relaxing, but quiet and a bit sleepy (might be too quiet for some people). Food is good, but pricey. Kids club is great, but the pool is just okay without easy entry or waterslides. Beach is not best for extended playtime in sand or water. Even so, I still loved it and would definitely return.

But also order room service for breakfast a we days. They have added pickleball courts which we love. The beach is not as beautiful as it used to be. Due to the hurricanes they have put concrete structures in the water and makes the view less beautiful. Lots of seaweed. All in all a great getaway!

My husband and I visited ERC for his 30th birthday, and it exceeded all expectations. This was the most beautiful and relaxing place we have ever been. We got the swim up suite room, and loved it. The resort was so clean and well maintained, the rooms were wonderful, the food was the best we have ever had, the shows/activities at night were so fun, the drinks were delicious, the app was great at navigating the resort, and the pool is kept at the best temperature. The staff was truly the pinnacle of excellence. They made our experience so incredible and much better. Thank you so much Mario for making my husbands birthday so memorable. My only recommendations for guests, is that some of the restaurants have a dress code (my husband hates pants, so we had to buy him a pair at the gift shop), bring sunscreen/sunglasses/wide brim hat/after sun care, and if you get eaten to death my mosquitos bring bug spray. My husband didnt get bit at all, and i got bitten over 40 times. We cant wait to come back!

All of the restaurants are great, my favorites were Basmati and Spice. The only room for improvement: I wish there were healthier options available by the pools do lunch. The taco truck is great but doesn't open until 4pm.. a little late for lunch. I don't want fries/hotdog/burger/nachos for lunch. The Linux buffet was great, but it would've been nice to have a salad or tacos by the pool. Loved the shows and trivia every night! Can't wait to go back.

This beach is not for swimming bring swimming shoes if you plan to go knee deep. The beach draped beds which is quiet and relaxing. edit! I found out they use Lactose free milk in the restaurant cappuccino machine. Beware! Montezuma visited me last night. We've been so careful. I noticed the spinach on the salad bar had not been cleaned properly. I suspect that they're not cleaning the frozen vegetables with bottled water. Lesson learned, bring some Pepto-Bismol and some hemorrhoid cream. This was about 4 hours of torture.

Before my arrival I was excited about the opportunity to be at an all inclusive resort. Our travel…read moreagent said it was KID friendly ( HAH ! not really) We were immediately disappointed at arrival. We paid extra to be on the first floor walkout to the cold pool. This was the FIRST time at this RESORT. The staff were friendly but quickly wanted us out of their space. They asked if this was the first time, we said yes. However we were NOT given complete information and were not told to BOOK restaurants NOW. Don't wait!!! The adjoining rooms : Mine was fine... however my daughter's was POOR. The sofa smelled like someone urinated on it . The reading light was poorly connect and gave one a shock when they touched. The bathroom had a broken and cracked sink that leaked water when you turned it on ( pictures below). One shower light leaked water. We notified the front desk the next morning , because we arrived late due to delayed Lomas Travel travel to the Resort from the airport. It took us 3 hours to get a van. We waited outside the the Lomas Travel spot and they were friendly . However kept saying " it is coming ". Gratefully when we finally had a van we were the first drop off location. We asked the concierge if there was another suite. NO was the response they were booked full . We would have to take a lesser upper floor and would have to sign a release /acceptance with no refunds or credits for the lesser room. Yes ...They came to clean the room and address the sofa bed odors and stains. they did not fix the sink nor the light. Only one dinner reservation was achievable, for 4 persons . The other reservations were for 2 people only. Understandable we could not go to the ADULTS only side restaurants with my young grandson. My recommendation: RESERVE all restaurants before you get to the resort Again we should have been informed BEFORE we arrived. The food was acceptable . The Indian and Italian restaurants were the best - they get 4 stars for the entrees and appetizers. The Indian restaurant did NOT have any of their menu listed desserts...only strawberry ice cream. This was a disappointment but tolerable. The Tex Mex restaurant was so poor we walked out and ordered room service. They are kid friendly and provide support if your child is over 5 years old or an infant that mom takes care of/feeds ! They had no paper, plastic cups or straws for 3 years old. They gave my grandson a stemless wine glass with chocolate milk. REALLY? We had to ask for a recyclable plastic cup every time we sat down. They had adult plates and eating utensils. So I learned that kid friendly meant that they smiled and said hi to kids and provided at 3 restaurants a kid menu of the basics. I will say 90% of the wait staff were friendly. Smiling and saying hello and have a good day in Spanish. And yes , we did tip them. However, Most of the answers to our questions were: - no we cannot do that or that is not available , or no sorry. The ADULTS ONLY side of the resort was beautiful ! and probably a better place and service . However remember NO kids are allowed on that side . MORE INCLUSIVE activities , 3 of them, were NOT kid under 6 friendly. NO kids under 6 . Nickelodeon was accessible and covered. However, despite scheduling in advance the date we wanted to go , we waited an hour to get a van ride to a place that was very close. And then we waited in line to get our wrist band. Again more information at check-in would have helped and directions how to walk there across the resorts would have helped. OR more golf cart transportation! There was a play area for kids but not open all day. And if your child was under 4 you had to have an adult there. BUT only one adult could come in. Another rule even if the place was empty ! We had to book our return transportation trip to the airport 3 x's . Once at Check in and 2x's more - not sure why? We did get a direct van 4 hours before our flight departure. Maybe should have fudged about departure time. The refrigerator was stocked sufficiently with water, sugary soda , and beers . No juices or other waters . No regular milk for children. 2 small cartons of chocolate milk. The weather was beautiful as well as the views. My recommendation s are: work directly with the Resort and reserve. FORGET the middle man - LOMAS Travel in our case. It cost us extra $$ for sure. It was hard to get a fully paid receipt from either entity and we had to fully pay i month before arrival. It was very difficult to get travel vouchers to the RESORT . We received them less than 4 hours before arrival in Cancun. Promised 5 days before arrival . Ask many questions, the web site has limited information mostly for advertisement purposes. BOOK all eating locations requiring reservations before you arrive at the Resort . Make sure if you are bringing kids that they are older than 6! We should have been told about that by the travel agent.

We ventured here with my partner and his family for his 40th birthday celebration, and the entire week didn't disappoint. First, the staff is incredibly kind and hospitable. Each morning you are greeted with smiles and they always make themselves available or attentive to your needs. I barely could open a door during the entirety of my stay. A major shout out to the entertainment team, specifically Bidi Bidi Bum Bum (her nickname), who kept us relaxed and busy during the week. Bidi is incredible. Next, the overall hotel esthetic is quite nice. It certainly has its own unique design decisions, but the accommodations in your room are amazing. Each suite has its own mini fridge stocked with beer and wine that they will refill each day. Every room has a coffee machine and a large bathroom as well. They have three pools, one of which is indoor and the other is a quiet bool. The main pool has a massive bar where cocktails are poured every day from 9 - 7. Not only that, the five restaurants and the buffet have so much food I think I could not eat for a whole week after the large amounts of steak and seafood I ingested. Overall, the price and experience are definitely worth it. I highly recommend this hotel if you're looking for an adults only, vibrant food and drink experience.

As someone that has been to 10+ resort experiences across Mexico, Jamaica, DR, St Marteen and other Caribbean this is up there as one of the best. The price is incredibly reasonable 2 people for 5 days was around $1900 for all inclusive. There was 5+ restaurants, 1 beach restaurants, 1 buffet option on the resort. The Mexican dining restaurant was sensational, the steakhouse was my least favorite. A ton of different bar options around the resort. The liquor options were not bottom shelf, good mid tier options. And direct beach access, the most impressive part was it was seaweed season yet they were pretty clear. The grounds were very pretty and ton nature The room was spacious and the views from the balcony was gorgeous. Be mindful of the nature there are lemurs. They offered shows and night entertainment every night. My favorite was the fireshow and karaoke bar which is open most night. There were various pool options. There was a quiet pool option and a large more lively pool with a swim up bar. It was good vibes and entertainment. BEWARE of the time-share pitch. They will sell you on spending your morning doing this. We got out of it. Its a bit annoying.
