The over the top reviews do not match with my experience at all, far, far from reality. Mechanics missed several obvious issues and the estimate appeared to be very highly inflated and I was way overcharged for it. It seems regular customers are treated very well according to Yelp postings. Beware new customers. Next time I will go to a AAA shop where the customer has better recourse and I am assured the work will be done right the first time at a reasonable cost. If something is too good to be true it usually is not, sadly true. read more

I had trouble with Jimmy Vasser Toyota's Service Dept (they lied to me, telling me that my transmission, brake and power steering fluid were ALL dirty and needed changing) so I came to Gene's on a co-worker recommendation. Gene's was honest enough to tell me that my fluids were fine and they weren't even going to charge me for the check-up!!!!!!!!!! AN HONEST CAR REPAIR PLACE?!?!?!?!? OMG! What more can you ask for!!!! I have taken my car in for other modest service (enginge mis-firing) and they were honest and fair for that as well. Well, so I give Gene's 5 stars for their honesty, but in reality they are not perfect. Tracy and her crew at Gene's Auto Repair have been my go to shop since finding them when I moved to Vallejo in 2016. Any time a vehicle I've owned over the years has been in need, I knew I could count on Tracy to take care of my auto and truck repairs in a knowledgeable, courteous and expedicious manner. It seems that nothing is beyond their capabilities. I only wish that I had found this shop long ago. I've never felt that I could trust my vehicles to any other shop like I can with Gene's Auto Repair. Small family business's are worth their weight in gold. Keep it up Tracy! Scheduled appointment for 8am for a prepurchase/warranty inspection. Arrived and parked outside the gate and waited for them to open. 8:00 a.m. came and went. At 8:07 a.m. someone arrived and opened the gate. Side note: the mechanics were also sitting in their cars waiting. So when I got inside they processed my paperwork by 8:18am (my appointment was at 8:00am). At 8:24am my car was pulled in. At 9:04am my car was pulled out and the employee Cesar apprised me of the inspection findings he asked if I wanted just recommendations or an estimate I requested both. An HOUR later (10:04am) I was still waiting when the owner Tracy came in and discovered discrepancies and had the car rechecked to find a noise in the engine and apparently they didn't do the brakes and other inspection items. At 11:20am my car was again pulled out. Another 45 minutes later (12:04pm) I was finally asked to pay for the car. I was not provided a discount for the inconvenience just as an AAA customer. While yes the inspection was thorough I do believe that the amount of time was excessive considering after it was discovered something wasn't looked at it was not made priority to be checked. This company and I have history to back in '09 when I worked for a security company and had them repair our vehicles. Sad to say today's service was not indicative of what I've come to expect. read more

Had an emergency situation...car would not start. Praying that it was not serious...like starter, alternator, etc. Tracy had her guys do a diagnostic, and discovered I only needed a new battery. Since it was still under warranty, she called a local Chrysler dealer and secured my getting the prorated price for a new one. That was service that went beyond the norm. I use Gene's for most of my automotive needs (repairs, oil changes, etc.). When I stopped by yesterday to ask about changing out my hub caps for newly purchased ones, the young man didn't hesitate but came out to my car and immediately changed all four without charge. I was more than happy to pay him anything (as I'm 76 and an auto-idiot) but he wouldn't accept a dime. I felt somewhat embarrassed for breaking into his day with my inane request but he thought nothing of it and was more than helpful. I went to this shop because it was convenient. I should have waited for my regular mechanic. I was originally quoted a fair price for what Gene's told me needed to be fixed on day 1. The next day I got a call there were more "broken or worn" parts. They should have been noticed during the initial inspection but weren't. Since the initial parts had already been replaced I was feeling suckered. Only after I was committed to over a thousand dollars in repairs did my quote suddenly double to make my car "safe". I got my car out of there and had my mechanic inspect my car. (Bachelors degree in automotive technology and mechanical engineering. Who is a long time mechanic and millwright.) Gene's initial quoted work on my car was needed. Everything else to make my car "safe" on the second day was at least 10 k miles or a year away from needing repairs. For someone who's back in school full time I can't spend money unless it's an absolute necessity. The lady was nice, but I wouldn't trust her or this shop to work on my car again. read more

My husband Thomas had made an appointment on Friday for today to get our Jeep looked at. As we are about to pull in he gets a phone call saying they are not open today and need to reschedule - to bad we can SEE that they in fact are open - I can't even believe the low level of unprofessional "customer service" !!! We had taken time off of work today and everything! Who calls to reschedule at the time of your appointment and says they are not supposed to be open today !!! Where do I begin? Gene's sold me on a 7k brand new engine for my 03 Durango. Fast forward to 4 months later and my truck has a check engine light on and has lost 50-60% of it's power. I called Gene's to report my issues and I couldnt believe how rude Tracy was. My parents and I have spent around 20k at this shop and I cannot believe how I was treated at this place. I'm a faithful customer whenever anything unfortunate happens to my car. I've never gotten the sense that they're suggesting that anything other than the necessary work be done just to make an extra buck. I don't go there for simple stuff like oil changes, but when there's an issue with a pump or a belt needs replacing, I feel good bringing my car here. I spoke with Tracy three times this morning and each time, she said she would leave a message to one of her mechanics to call me back. The first time, she asked several questions and seemed almost "nosey". I told her I preferred to speak to the mechanic as this is a mechanic that was referred to me. I don't think she ever relayed the message as I was not getting my call returned. The second time I called again, she put me on hold for a while saying she would go get him. She came back to the phone just to tell me that she will have to call me back. (I thought she went to get him?) Anyway, no call back - neither from her nor the mechanic. The third time, I called again and she said, she would definitely have the mechanic call me back shortly. All day, all afternoon (it's 6:00 PM now), I never got a call back from either of them. I really don't know why it was so difficult for someone to take a minute out of their day to call me back. Whether it's by the owner or the mechanic. I will not do business with this place. First impression means a lot to me. It obviously doesn't mean s*** to Tracy, the owner. Who knows if the mechanic ever got the message. At this point, it really doesn't matter. I am a small business owner and customer service is something I have never lacked - in the 19 years. With Tracy's lack of customer service, I can't imagine the business lasting. read more

I would not recommend to friends or family. They do not keep their word. My truck was not starting so I went to Gene's Auto. I paid for a diagnostic, but one could not be preformed because my battery was completely dead. I was told that because the battery was dead that I would have to get a new battery before a diagnostic could be performed. I was told that after a couple of days I could bring it back in to get the diagnostic that I paid for. Brought it back and I was completely livid when I was told that I could not get the diagnostic, they ask why?, are you have problems with it? I showed them the paper work and explained that I paid for a diagnostic and did not receive one, I would like the diagnostic that I was promised, long story short I was told that they do not remember that conversation and I could not get one. I will drive my truck to El Cerrito, like I have in the past. I rather spend a little more money on a company that conducts business ethically. read more

I'm sorry but I have nothing nice to say about Gene's Auto Repair. I gave myself a headache going back and forth over the phone with Tracy. I called in to ask one simple question and never got an honest answer. It was pretty obvious to me that she was using that raise up the bill tactic. She asked person questions about how much money I've spent so far on my car, she accused every other shop for ripping me off, and so on and so on. All I ever wanted to know was cost, and time and she refused to give it to me an answer. I'll take my business elsewhere. I forgot to mention that she hung up the phone in my face because I called her on her little pricing game. I took my car in because it had a problem with the engine fan. But it did not demonstrate the problem I had when I took it in. I guess thats a good thing. But the customer service I received was SO GREAT!!!! The BEST in the area! The lady (I didn't get her name) explained everything in detail and was very knowledgeable of what she was talking about. Although my car didn't act up for the mechanics to work on it, If their front office makes the grade of A+++, I can only imagine their mechanics are on the same level. i wonder why they didn't put the cover back on the alternator? when I called they apologized but didn't offer any kind of compensation or anything. they took me immediately and i'm grateful for that. and were good on calling me when i was running a little late. anna at the front desk is good and kind. but i'm a little disappointed. does changing out a battery and an alternator (about a 20 minute job) seem like a $620 repair? I'd go back but I don't know if I'll feel like I trust them 100% read more

One sweltering hot day I found my car was overheating. I topped off my coolant, but the indicator light continued to stay on. I asked Siri where the closest mechanic was. Luckily she suggested Gene's Auto Repair. Even though they were getting ready to close, they agreed to let me leave my car overnight. I returned early the next morning and filled out the paperwork. Anna was very helpful. Within an hour I received a phone call with an estimate. Turns out my serpentine belt was worn out. This drives the fan that cools the engine, so it could have been much more serious! There were a couple of other, less critical things diagnosed, but I explained I couldn't afford to do everything all at once. They were understanding and took care of the work at hand. They had the parts on hand and completed the work within 2-3 hours, even with my very last minute appointment. I'm very happy with the work and excellent customer service. As soon as I get a little more money together I'll go back to have the other repairs taken care of. read more

For a period of time, I would only go to a dealership: I wanted confidence in the work done. Over time, I found I was being over-charged, and decided to look elsewhere. I took a chance on Gene's shop. (It is nearby my residence). I guess I got lucky to find Gene's because They've definitely earned my trust. I took my car here for a simple smog repair at 8:00 AM. and left them my car all afternoon, only to get a call back while I'm at work at 3:00 PM. the same day telling me their technician had broke the key in my ignition while trying to start my car. They caused me a big headache and didn't want to cover the cost to have a locksmith come extract the broken key from my ignition. They had to keep my car overnight by pushing it in the garage and still didn't do the job I hired them to do. I had to pay the locksmith out of pocket, over $75.00. The owner Tracy was rude, unprofessional, and unreasonable after I asked her to help cover half the cost, which she wouldn't do after having the car for over 6 hours on here location. I wouldn't trust these guys to put air in a bicycle tire if I was on flat riding past their business. They appeared nice at first but when customer service was important they failed, I had to inform the Better Business Bureau and Bureau of Automotive Repair of their negligence. I would give them 0 Stars but i had to select at least one to leave this review of these crooks. read more

Took my Chrysler Concorde in for a tough-to-diagnose problem with the a/c. While I feel the cost to diagnose was high in terms of up-front money, the mechanics did a thorough job getting to the root of the problem and then getting the necessary part overnight and fixing the problem. Would recommend Tracy and her crew as honest local operators who deserve consideration when your vehicle needs mechanical repair.
