Ok, you guys are getting the coveted bump up to 5 stars because of the awesome friendliness and personal attention by Russ (owner? manager? don't know, but very cool!). Walked over there two days in a row, and had a great experience both times. This place is easy to drive by because A) its on a random side street in a small Mass town, and B) it looks from the street like just about a thousand other little convenience stores across the state. The locals definitely know this place is here, though, as it was busy even at random times on both days. When you walk in, you see a fairly typical convenience store, but start to notice some good signs when walking past the fresh baked, incredibly high calorie, nameless bakery concoctions in the display at the register. Crap, I'm gonna get fat going to this place. The real magic here happens at the back of the store at the deli. What an amazingly interesting mess of great food. The deli counter is fronted by a big table full of even more bakery goods and such, which seem to be in no particular order. Honor system, maybe? Who knows, it all looks great. There are a bunch of subs/sandwiches on the menu - my favorite by far is the Milfordian (I mean, how can you NOT order one of these?). Its made with their homemade porketta, which is absolutely fantastic. They'll give you a little sample if you're nice, especially if you run into this Russ guy. Porketta, by the way, is kind of a spiced pulled pork. Good stuff. For dessert I got roped into this regatta (sp?) pie, which is similar to pumpkin pie, just without the pumpkin. Yeah, that looks dumb when I write it that way, but you'll see what I'm talking about if you try it. I'll definitely go back, as apart from great fresh stuff, they also have some good local grocery items (fresh local Milford eggs - who knew?), and all sorts of good pasta and other assorted Italian items. After a 3.5 mile hike in Upton State Park we headed here for some calorie replenishment. From the outside it's straight ghetto looking. Soooo many amazing places carry this same uninviting curb appeal only to wowza from the second you cross the threshold into their meatful bliss of a food wonderland! The options are plentiful, ingredients high quality and everything is freshy fresh. We ordered 3 deli sandwiches. Mine was the Dublin. The Cole slaw on that sandwich, let me tell ya, crunchtastically delicious! Such an outstanding blend of flavors that took my sandwich to the next level. I am looking for a replacement to Collella's Market which was my favorite and most affordable way to feed myself when I didn't want to eat in the work cafeteria. Now that it's not EMC anymore (it's Dell EMC) the subsidy's on the cafeteria have gone away and the sandwich I used to get for $4.00 is now $6.50+ it's time to seek outside sustenance. Today I had an open lunch time slot and decided to hit Yelp. Olivia's came up first but after reading about the Pilgrim (turkey with cranberry and stuffing), my thanksgiving gears started turning and couldn't be stopped. I pulled up to Gene's and selected a roll from the basket in front the sub guys and passed them the roll and said "The Pilgrim please." (this is a similar ordering style to Lambert's - lambertsmarket.com - out in the Boston area which I also love. The sandwich was stuffed with turkey and stuffing and was delicious - and the bread was warmed and it had the right amount of mayo to pull it all together. Great sandwiches and other prepared deli items. I've had the Crunchy Tuna sandwich about 7 or 8 times. They are very good sized for $5.49. And they put the chips inside the sandwich for me, so I don't have to. I have a cold right now and didn't much feel like eating a bit earlier. Loved it. Went with Husband and two toddlers on Father's Day after the zoo. Tons of sandwich creations you don't find anywhere else. A model train runs around the ceiling. looks like it was transported from the 1970s. Checkout counter is an icecream case! Staff was so friendly and helpful, even sliced a couple pieces of ham and cheese for my 18 month old. Made a plain cheese sandwich for the 3 year old too! Been in the area for5 years now and just discovered , but has a flare of its own for a whole in the wall.... another last of the whole in the wall family business around , but deliciousness abundant. Can't say enough for their selection of meats! I'm only in Milford a few times a year, and Gene's is my second stop (after Mom's house of course). My whole family is obsessed with the sandwiches: my mom frequents the roast beef or corned beef with a few sweet peppers, I'm all about the Italian with roasted peppers, and my brother loves the meatball sub. Their selection of fresh rolls are awesome (I get the Portuguese roll every time), and the frozen raviolis are perfection (all about the butternut squash). Gene's is everything you'd want in a small Italian grocery store, even in the great crew that runs the shop (Jeff remembers my name and says hi every time I'm in, no matter how long its been). I had heard about this store for several years and kept forgetting to go there because I wasn't necessarily in this end of town and we know how bad the traffic is! We ordered a tuna wrap and a pastrami sandwich. I was not familiar with the cubby where they keep the sandwiches and waited in line for a little bit at the deli. In an age of box stores and franchises, Gene's variety is a refreshing reminder of how good the single owner business can be. I'm old enough to remember stores like this dotting my neighborhood growing up. It's honest fare, Great homemade pasta, Italian products you can't find anywhere else, and the sandwiches can't be beat within a 30 mile radius. For as long as I can remember, for Easter dinner, we've had food that comes mostly from Gene's. My aunt and uncle are in charge of Easter dinner, and since neither of them are handy in the kitchen, it's off to Gene's they go. From the outside, this small variety store doesn't look like much, but this is definitely a case where you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. The lasagna is bubbling over with gooey cheesy goodness and their sauce is approved by my little old Italian grandfather (who makes the best sauce ever, only we call it gravy). You can even bring them your pan and they'll make the lasagna in your dish. For dessert, Gene's apple pie. The filling is sweet, not too mushy, not too crispy, with a cinnamon earthiness. The crust is flaky and perfect, with a sprinkling of sugar adding a little crunch to the top. But the shining star, and the highlight of the meal, is the porketta. Here's the thing, I don't like fennel seeds. I'm not a fan of that black licorice flavor. Gene's porketta is positively covered in fennel seeds. When I was younger, I stayed away from the porketta on Easter. We also have ham, so I'd eat that and pass the porketta right by me. But then one year, I tried it. And now, even though it's covered with fennel seeds, I can't seem to get enough of it. It's one of those things that doesn't make any sense, but I love it. Well spiced, if you eat enough of it, you start to sweat a little from the heat of it. The pork is cooked to the point of falling apart so that it melts in your mouth. It seems like most people here in the city don't know the glory of porketta. Does anywhere out here even sell/serve porketta? I had to explain what porketta is to friends, and bring leftovers for folks to try. Now we're at the point where I need basically have this same meal at my house for my city friends because they're all dying to have the whole experience. When I do, I'll be going to Gene's and getting our Easter dinner special. Another thing to note, this is also one of the only (that I know of) places in the area where you can still buy authentic hand-made cappelletti. Last time I was in there, it was around $8 per 100, but totally worth it. Trust me, that's coming from someone who has taken the time to make them by hand. read more

After Beth's review there's little more to add! That said, I will chime in and say that Gene's does OUTSTANDING sandwiches. My work crew and I frequent Gene's at lunch time for sandwiches. Their meat is always freshly sliced, the bread fresh and springy, the portions generous and more importantly assembled with care. When I say assembled with care, I mean the tomatoes are evenly distributed, you never bite into a large glob of mustard, or encounter the sleeve still on the salami. This little variety store may not look like much on the outside, but they sure do make a great sub. I found this shop while on business in Milford this week. When you first enter the shop it looks like a small convenient store, but walk down the back and you will find a busy sub counter and salad bar. They have a variety of specialty sandwiches on the menu all with creative names such as "Old School Italian" or "The Milfordian". It was so hard to decide, but I went with the buffalo chicken sandwich (Im drawing a blank on its cutesy name at the moment). It was a delicious sandwich made on a very fresh roll. I can be fussy about bread sometimes, but this passed the test. I only wish I lived closer so I could return more often and try some of the other choices. I think I had just beat the lunchtime rush at 11:45. The line grew very long behind me as I waited for my order. This shop is strictly takeout with no indoor seating.
