I was looking for a place to grab lunch that was close by the office I work at and when I searched Yelp this place came up and struck my interest. You pretty much get exactly what you expect. It's a small deli/grocery store, mostly selling Italian products. They deli includes a hot bar that has mostly Italian style food that I'm assuming changes per day. They have a pretty extensive sandwich selection, including making your own. The one thing that does stick out here I think is the Portugese rolls they have which I have not seen in the average deli. It's nice and crusty on the outside and soft on the inside. I've gotten their Beef Bomb roast beef sandwiches every time and honestly for under 6 dollars it can't be beat. I don't know, I liked it, wasn't blown away. Got an Italian and a Chicken Parm. Both good, Italian was slightly better. I like how they cut the cold cuts to order, nice touch. Old school neighborhood Italian deli/ store. Loved the bins of fresh rolls in front of the deli counter. Crusty outside, soft inside. Ordered the Italian, and it did not disappoint. Everything is fresh here. They also have serve-yourself chafing dishes with raviolis, stir fry beef, and two other hot entrees. My son couldn't decide on a sandwich and opted for the server's choice. He opened the surprise sandwich- turkey and cheese with what I'm guessing was Thousand Island dressing. He loved it. This place is an Italian dinosaur and I hope it lives on to provide many more years of great, old- fashioned food. The prices are decent as well. Glad I found it. read more

This place is BOMB. Seriously, it is like sandwich heaven. Gene's is located in Milford, and is hard to find if you dont know where your going (or you are not from Milford). Its a deli that sells fresh bread... They also have meals that they make (self serve) where you can fill a container and it gets weighed at the register and you pay per pound. Orrr, you can go right up to the deli, where there is lists of their special sandwiches, and you can get it on any kind of bread you would like.. Sooooo good. Immaculate deli and variety store. Ordered sandwiches. The rolls were fantastic, crusty on the outside and soft on the inside. Service was prompt. All of the sandwiches were delicious and loaded with selected fillings. Also ordered two "filled to-go" cannoli - also delicious. There are a variety of Italian grocery items, as well as homemade pies that look gorgeous. I will be trying a pie for Thanksgiving. Also have homemade cookies and biscotti. Great little place, tucked on water street in Milford. I had worked in the town for 5 years before I tried it out for lunch with a co-worker and I am glad I did. Genes is a great little Italian convenient store, you can buy anything from canoli, to pasta, wine, pasta, subs, pizza, and chips. Great little place. Legitimate and delish cold cuts, great subs that are creative and on great bread. Perhaps pricey for the size of the sub, but it is good quality. I have been here now7 or 8 times and haven;t been disappointed. Your best bet is too grab some of the hot food they have ready to go, especially the pizza, where you can grab a slice and go! The fact that most of the Milford FD came in right behind me might say more than I probably can, but here goes. Great little deli/bakery/convenience store. Pick your bread, hand it over the counter, tell them what you want, and shazam...fresh deli Italian sandwich. I got 2, so I could take one back and save it for tomorrow. It'll be tough to resist it all day. There are a long list of sandwiches available, or you can build your own. They also had soups, including Italian Wedding, pizza, hot roast beef, olive bar, stuffed banana peppers and a wide variety of chips and canned/bottled soft drinks. Love love love Gene's! The sandwiches are awesome. Fresh Portuguese rolls in the back can't be beat. They have a selection of hot foods in buffet warmers at lunchtime by the deli. Love going during Lent just cause the seafood is so good- clam chowder, fried scallops, stuffed quahogs, clam cakes, Mac n cheese- all top notch. Homemade pasta/raviolis are in the freezer. Been going to Gene's for years. It's such a cute little Italian market with the best sandwiches, homemade food to go, and pies. I order their lemon merengue, coconut creme, and chocolate pies for the holidays every year. My favorite sandwiches are the Pilgrim, crunchy tuna, and old school Italian. This is a GEM of a place. The people there are all friendly and courteous and i've never had an issue with service or the food. The Porketta here is what got me to visit it the first time and will be the item that makes me return everytime. Just about once a month i get a 6-7 pound porketta from Gene's and i cook it myself in my rotissierre. This is the one the best things to smell when it's cooking round and round. They also make and freeze their own homemade pasta which you can taste is fresh. I really should stop buying store pasta and just go here. Every so often they make their own sausage which my favorite is a Tomato and Basil Sausage which is just Awesome. You can really taste the fresh tomato and basil in it. If you've never had Porketta before then the best thing you can do is go to Gene's Variety and ask for "The Milfordian" which is a warm Porketta filled sub of Awesome-Goodness. This place rocks! Driven by it a million times and never knew it existed. One day I did some work for the owner and he told me to swing by his store and he would give me a sandwich as a tip. It was great. They have a variety of specialty sandwiches and will also make you whatever you want. They also cook lunch and put it in a serve yourself style steam table. Its phenomenal! This is a small variety store that has a deli in the back that you can choose different sandwiches and other food items from. The sandwiches are made while you wait, sort of like a Subway, only way better. I love the feel of the store it's very old school in a way and it feels homey. I usually opt to make my own sandwich but they also have a list of different ones to choose from. The quality is fresh and the prices are very reasonable. I moved to the area about a year ago. It took me about 6 months to hear about, and then check this place out. It's quickly become my go to place for sandwiches, and I've since started traveling in a pack with fellow employees that can't get enough of Gene's. I'm a sandwich freak, and this place is about as good a place as I've ever been to. Actually, the only place I've ever been to that is better is Katz's in NYC. The Heights, the Milfordian, Old School Italian, 3 Little Pigs, Porky Pig...man, the choices are endless and all phenomenal. Good luck trying to get out of there ordering only 1 sandwich.
