Believe it or not, sometimes when I go out to eat I'm not starving and I don't want to eat so much that I have to roll myself out of the restaurant. (I know, crazy right?) When I'm feeling like this, sushi seems like a good call. After some Sunday shopping at Legacy Place, my husband and I decided on Genki Ya for an early dinner before heading home. There was no wait and we were seated right away. My husband noted that the interior had an almost spa-like feel - very calm and soothing. The restaurant has soft lighting and a waterfall wall, along with pretty Asian inspired decor. It was definitely a good date spot. Being that it was Father's day, we also saw a lot of families (with young and older kids), as well as groups of girls eating out after a day of shopping; obviously, Genki Ya appeals to a wide range of customers. I loved the selection of sushi and other goodies on the menu. I very rarely eat raw fish sushi, and there was a huge variety of vegetarian and cooked seafood rolls to please my tastes. I ordered the sweet potato tempura sushi and the fruit sushi roll with mango, banana, and avocado, which I was so excited to try. My husband ordered spicy tuna and Philadelphia rolls. The waitress was kind and amenable to all our special requests (brown rice, no tobiko, regular salmon instead of smoked). We started with an order of steamed pork gyosa with ginger sauce, which was the perfect primer. The sushi was delicious and so pretty! The fruit sushi did not disappoint. The rice was a purple, multi-grain rice with a delicious heartiness. The banana and mango added sweetness, and when dipped in soy sauce and wasabi it was pure smooth-nutty-salty-sweet-spicy goodness. All of the other plates I saw come out of the kitchen were equally beautiful - for me, the aesthetic appeal is half the fun of eating sushi (or any type of food, really). Oh, and the price is great! $36 for an appetizer and 4 sushi rolls (8 pieces per roll)! Wow! Only draw back to the whole experience was that the seating is so tight we heard every word of our neighbors' dinner conversation, which, albeit kind of interesting, was also very distracting and uncomfortable. However, I'm really happy to have had such a nice dinner and am excited to come here again soon! read more

I was disappointed that when the food wasn't done they tried to take it. Also a server was eating during her shift in the middle in the dining room while serving. We were there for not even an hour and they were rushing us. Never asked if we wanted dessert or if we needed anything else. Especially when she told us to take the plate for her, when as a server they should be able to walk around to get it themselves. Also food was below average, especially when one of the dishes hokayaki. One Positive feedback was the server who took our order was very nice. read more

Went to try this place today. The look is very modern, but lack of AC for this weather. The bathroom was also very hot. Food was okay, lacked the spicy mayo when we ordered the spicy oyster and double spicy tuna. THERE IS NO SPICE AT ALL! Hello, what happened?! Service was nice and food came out quick. I am a weird sushi eater. I don't like seafood, I KNOW! I LOVE vegetarian sushi though. Love love love it. I have had meh sushi where they think vegetarian sushi is a waste of time. I've had good vegetarian sushi which was fresh and the rice was cooked properly. And I've had GREAT vegetarian sushi where they take as much care in their vegetarian options as they do their fish options. Genki Ya is ridiculously great. I have never seen so many great options for vegetarian sushi. The ABC roll is out of this world. Avocado, banana and cream cheese. I mean, I just can't even. The sweetness of the banana, mixes so well with the fresh creaminess of the avocado which is offset by the slight bitterness of the cream cheese. Just so freakin' great! This is a great place for sushi! It's never crowded in there, unlike the other waits and crowds at Legacy Place. So the service is good too. And the food is delicious, all fresh and reasonably priced. And yes they have fun cocktails too. I've also been there for lunch, and their lunch specials are especially good! read more

I was planning on enjoying some adequate sushi considering we were in the middle of a strip mall on a busy Saturday night after Christmas. My friend and I only had to wait 5 minutes for a table, but it was packed. As a vegetarian at a sushi restaurant, my usual hope is that I can look forward to a cucumber roll and maybe one or two other decent vegetarian rolls. Much to my surprise, the menu had numerous vegetarian roll options, including some with inventive ingredients like bananas. I ordered three rolls which was way too much food; two rolls was more than enough because the portion was large. It may have been a little more expensive than some other sushi restaurants, but it was well worth it. The next time I'm in the area, I'll look forward to returning again! read more

If you're looking for sushi and don't want to go out, Genki is a great option for sushi. Nothing too inspired, but the cuts are fresh and plentiful, and they do a great job packing it for travel. The miso soup, contrary to other reviews, was a little underwhelming to me, and nigiri was better than the specialty rolls. Tip: nigiri prices are for two pieces and ask for extra soy sauce for delivery orders. read more

The worst sushi I've ever had. Came here for a meal and ordered the makimoni combo. It came out really fast (maybe someone ordered it then changed his/her mind so it was just sitting around and they needed to get it out). The first few pieces were okay, until I noticed that something was... off. Sushi 101: don't overcook the rice. Considering the rice makes up half the sushi, the wet, soggy rice just ruined all the sushi for me. The rice was so soggy that it looked like one giant mush - you couldn't see where the grains separated. Maybe it was an off day, but wow, never had sushi so bad in my life. read more

I haven't eaten here yet but this is a rave review for takeout service and the quality of the takeout. Great thing about this place as it is a pain to get here but while you are sitting in traffic, you can order online before your drive. Portions are not skimped and they have really good lunch deals. 3 rolls, soup, salad for $14!! Also, to make myself feel good, it's organic and they do offer brown rice instead of white if you would like. Sashimi is great here and they have never gotten my order wrong. read more

Ordered sushi for delivery to my hotel down the road. The spicy tuna salad was not a salad, nor was it spicy, nor did it have much tuna. Huge disappointment. It was like a crunchy bland mush with a side of cucumber slivers. I also ordered a caterpillar roll and a double spicy salmon roll. These tasted pretty basic and bland, nothing special and no flavors stood out. I was expecting the salmon to be fresher, but tasted like grocery store quality. I don't know, maybe my expectations are too high but I thought fish out on the east coast would be way better. I'm definitely going to find other food options for the rest of my stay. read more

Visiting on business, I was looking for some sushi. . . found this place and was not disappointed. I had the double spicy tuna roll which was quite good. Then I asked for a roll I made up my self with spicy tuna,spicy salmon flying fish roe and avocado with the multi-grain rice - excellent. Mmmmm, this place is amazing! I am a sashimi eater and their fish is always super fresh, and they give you super big cuts. They have an awesome variety of rolls as well. Their miso is delicious, and I definitely recommend the spring roll appetizer! It is like a little burrito, so great! This is near my work. It got good reviews here on help so I tried it. I am now hooked. Have probably been 4 or 5 times. I love it here. Everything I have tried has been really good but the grilled seafood deluxe is my favorite. The place is really clean and the staff is awesome. I found this place via the ever so helpful Yelp app. Upon hearing that the seafood on the east coast is so much better than the seafood any where else, I was a little disappointed when the sushi here did not blow me away. With that being said, this place does have great sushi. I had many different rolls and, i must say, they were all delicious. The staff is courteous and the place is clean. Conveniently located near a theater so you can grab some sushi before or after a movie. Simply the best sushi place in Boston! I've been to many expensive sushi restaurants in Boston, NYC, Chicago and San Francisco, and yet not one can compare to this particular sushi restaurant. Genki is very clean and the design is very modern and pleasant. On top of that, the volcano is a must have. And if you ask "Zhen" for a special roll, you'll be pleasantly surprised with what you will get. Best sushi around. Get the multigrain rice (warning it's purple) - so delicious with beans and seeds in it. I'm vegetarian so I get the avocado roll, sweet potato tempura roll, ginger dressing green salad or avocado salad, and sometimes the vegetarian miso soup (you have to ask for it - the main one has fish broth).
