I'm keeping this one short and sweet...service is definitely hit or miss. The couple of times my band of merry fools and I visited it was usually miss (caveat: the one 'hit' was when my daughter's teacher's daughter [whew] recognized my ex, the kid and I and was very attentive to the party)...prices are very much towards the steep end for Ventura County sushi spots and the quality of the fish/rolls/food in general does not reflect the price you pay. In addition, the clientele is a little on the shady looking side...they like to dog you out. "Localism" is something I've experienced in my life, but never at a sushi spot, and for someone who's lived in their neighborhood for about two thirds of my life, the mean mugging I got from some of their customers was comical at best and irritating as fuck at worst. Worst Sushi Ive ever had ... the Philadelphia rolls were stuffed with what looked like canned tuna. The service was appalling, We were there for about a total of two hours. The first 45 minutes our sever completely ignored us. We had to beg someone else to take our order and get us drinks. Ive been to Genmai numerous times because of my favorite rolls which is the MOMMY ROLL and the GOLDEN CRUNCH ROLL. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND TAKE OUT instead of DINE-IN. A simple hello and good bye leaves an impression. and I didnt get one of those. My two co-workers and I came here for lunch today around 1:00 and was NOT greeted by a hello, or a smile. we were handed one sushi menu and one lunch menu. .... REALLY? we each ordered baked rolls and my two co workers ordered the sashimi salad, and as always the food is good. the problem is not the chefs it's the SERVICE. its UNACCEPTABLE. after we got our plates of food, it's usually accompanied by smaller sauce plates for soy sauce. We asked our server for it and did not recieve it, I was to my last slice of sushi until my co worker decided to get up & go get it herself. I dont even think customers were allowed to be in that area...Oh and let me tell you not once were we asked for a refill. I might have given them one more star if it was busy, because I understand how that would be I was a cashier AND server for over 4 years, but they had only 4 tables occupied with 2 servers. We were asked AFTER placing our order if we would like Miso soup, and was told it would be right up....when didnt get it at all, (why ask if you're not even going to bring it out) At that point we just wanted to pay & leave. A moment later our SAME server brought a bowl to a table that was seated after us. After finishing our plates we weren't even full we were full of their ugly service. All we wanted was our check to finally leave. The reason i even gave them ONE star was that he apologized. He wasnt a new employee because like I said ive been here numerous times. They need to get rid or train their DAY crew better and get a few tips from their server that I usually see at night a younger guy with a few piercings because he ALWAYS does a good job on serving us, or all in all replace their day crew. read more

This place is by FAR one of the bestest sushi restraunts I have ever been to. The service is great, and the chef is awesome! My husband and I have been a few times, and this past weekend our daughter decided to celebrate her birthday there. We had about 20 people in our group and the service was just as good as if there were only 2. Their rolls, awesome! The main chef will make WHATEVER you like. They have a pretty good list to choose from, but if you were to ask him to put a roll together for you with your likings, he will top it! They are pretty reasonable too! The ONLY downfall is this. And has nothing to do with their service either. It's a Japanese Restraunt, inside is Japanese and EVERYTHING with 1 little exception. Not 1 of the chefs is Japanese! Doesn't matter though cuz their food is Da' BOMB!!! And as you get up to leave for the evening, the Chef will CRACK you up as he is saying Good-bye. He says "See you tomorrow!" Too funny. I am defenetly a fan of this restaurant. The staff is very friendly and make you feel at home. The owner is always there and he is very welcoming as well. Thursday night's is the best time to go, they usually have a live band playing which provides a great atmosphere for the place. I recommend the Hanaka roll or the Love Roll. To whom it may concern, I believe you really get what you pay for. Knowingly I also believe that you should be very well knowledgable when you are working in any restaurant. I have just taken a to go order from this restaurant. The waitress is nice and tries her best to please her costumers. First off. All of the fish was extremely watered down. The toro, barely had any fat and in all honestly it was not toro that they are serving a very poor quality chew toro. It contained an extreme amount of sinew. The albacore was sliced into very large sashimi sliced and of course, was extremely tasteless. The temperature of the fish that we ordered was around 60 degrees. Keeping in mind that it was a to go order. We only traveled a block from the restaurant by an air condition vehicle. I had also asked for fresh wasabi, and the waitress insisted that everything was made this morning which is great except she has no idea what fresh wasabi is. For our area, Genmai is the best there is man. My wife has known the chef, since back in the day when he was part of another restaurant. She obviously stuck with him and had been visiting the place long before she took me there. The whole fusion thing between Asian and Mexican style cooking is really unique, I don't think you'll find it many other places. I usually get the boat and I always leave satisfied. There's live music, karaoke, and he even bought the NFL Sunday Ticket to bring in a Sunday drinkin' snackin' crowd. Genmai is a staple for Oxnard, it's one of our gems. It gets the 5 stars from me because it's so close and because it's personable, you get the feeling that you're leaving a relatives house when you walk out the door, and to me that's a rare thing. read more

We came here on a Friday afternoon around 3:45-4:00 there was 1 waiter/bar tender/hostess.. he had 1 table of people.. we were the second.. as we waited to place our order another family came in.. then 2 more groups of people. There was 2 tables needing to be cleaned. The service was very slow.. they had 3 sushi cooks but only 1 person doing everything else. Plus the lack of sushi menu makes it very hard to decide what to eat.. like what is on a ventura roll? Or a king roll? Or how about the red dragon roll compared to the green dragon roll.. Just went here for dinner and I am definitely a fan now! First, everyone working there was really nice and friendly. Then the food-- it was great! We had their sashimi salad (which has become my favorite!), baked green muscles (incredible!), Super California Roll (delicious), and their lobster roll (good). Everything we had tasted really good and we had no complaints there. If you're looking for an alternative to sushi rolls, I'd highly recommend their sashimi salad and/or baked green muscles. The prices were decent-- there's definitely cheaper sushi spots to go to in Oxnard, but this place is good if you don't mind spending the extra few bucks. So went to here eat with friends. I Got the combination beef teriyaki for $15.95.so when I got it have small pieces of meat and the sushi of California roll did not have taste and did not like that. My friend order kids meal for his son which price of 8.99 and see that has more meat than mine. I was still hungry because gave me small pieces of meat like 10 them.
